Water Mass Balances For The Rio Grande/Bravo From Fort Quitman, Texas To Foster Ranch Near Langtry, Texas: An Assessment Of Factors, Ramiro Lujan
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
ABSTRACT
Water availability is declining in many regions of the planet, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions. Water bodies located in these regions, like the Rio Grande/Bravo at the U.S. - Mexico border, are subjected to high water demands. This research project makes an assessment of the spatial and temporal variability of elements intervening in the water mass balance for the section of the Rio Grande/Bravo between Fort Quitman and Langtry, Texas during the time period extending from January 1990 through December 2005. This document mentions the main Rio Grande/Bravo stakeholders from the U.S. and Mexico, and describes issues related …

The presence of 9 selected PPCPs (acetaminophen, caffeine, cotinine, codeine, fluoxetine, erythromycin, ciprofloxacin, sulfamethazine, and trimethoprim) was surveyed in water samples collected at four sites along the middle Rio Grande during two flow regimes (irrigation and non-irrigation). Water collection for PPCPs analyses were conducted from August 2010 through September 2011. Three of the sites were located upstream, in, and downstream of the El Paso, TX/Ciudad Juárez, MX metroplex. Site selection was based on their proximity to the metroplex and due to the fact that the Rio Grande in this region is an effluent receiver water system (IBWC, 2011). The fourth …

Numerical Modeling Of Tectonics And Fault Activity Of Icy Satellites, John Olgin
Numerical Modeling Of Tectonics And Fault Activity Of Icy Satellites, John Olgin
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Enceladus, one of the satellites of Saturn, exhibits evidence of recent fault activity, which may be due to gravitational fluctuations, or tidal stresses, generated by its orbit around Saturn. Recent Cassini spacecraft observations of Enceladus reveal water-ice plume activity at the south polar region, originating from locations that correlate with four geologically young, linear fracture-like features, named the "tiger stripes". It is the goal of this investigation to determine the ideal geophysical and geological factors (e.g., fault depths, frictional coefficients, ice layer thickness, ocean layer thickness, tidal stress sources) that support fault activity on Enceladus. The core of this work …
Analysis And Modeling Of Dust Event Data From El Paso, Texas, Nancy Ivette Rivera Rivera
Analysis And Modeling Of Dust Event Data From El Paso, Texas, Nancy Ivette Rivera Rivera
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Wind erosion is a dynamic physical process that leads to environmental degradation when strong winds blow on loose, dry, bare soils, creating dust events that can impact human health, visibility and air quality. Since 1932, more than two thousand dust event days were recorded at El Paso, averaging 25 per year. This research analyzes and models data on dust events in the El Paso/Juarez metropolitan area for better understanding of their effects. The meteorological characteristics of these events are analyzed for variables such as the frequency, visibility, and average wind speeds associated with convective and non-convective events. These variables are …
The Topology Of Statistical Convergence, Khdiga Kalifa Tabib
The Topology Of Statistical Convergence, Khdiga Kalifa Tabib
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
A sequence {xn} is said to be statistically convergent to ℓ provided that "almost all" of the values of {xn} are arbitrarily close to ℓ. One can also define what is meant by statistical limit point, statistical limit superior, statistical limit inferior of a sequence and so forth and thus create a theory of convergence that includes ordinary convergence. In this work we investigate all these concepts and prove some new results. We also introduce a topology defined by this new convergence which we call statistical topology. Then we prove that both the statistical topology and the regular topology are …

How To Reconstruct The System's Dynamics By Differentiating Interval-Valued And Set-Valued Functions, Karen Villaverde, Olga Kosheleva
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
To predict the future state of a physical system, we must know the differential equations x = f(x) that describe how this state changes with time. In many practical situations, we can observe individual trajectories x(t). By differentiating these trajectories with respect to time, we can determine the values of f(x) for different states x; if we observe many such trajectories, we can reconstruct the function f( x). However, in many other cases, we do not observe individual systems, we observe a set X of such systems. We can observe how this set X changes, but not how individual …

Estimating Sample Mean Under Interval Uncertainty And Constraint On Sample Varience, Misha Koshelev, Ali Jalal-Kamali, Luc Longpre
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Traditionally, practitioners start a statistical analysis of a given sample x1, … , xn by computing the sample mean E and the sample variance V. The sample values xi usually come from measurements. Measurements are never absolutely accurate and often, the only information that we have about the corresponding measurement errors are the upper bounds Δi on these errors. In such situations, after obtaining the measurement result , the only information that we have about the actual (unknown) value xi of the ith quantity is that xi belongs to the interval …

Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The Border Ranges Fault System (BRFS) bounds the Cook Inlet and Susitna Basins, an important petroleum province within south-central Alaska. A primary goal in the research is to test several plausible models of structure along the Border Ranges Fault System using a novel three-dimensional inversion utilizing gravity and magnetic data, constrained with other geophysical, borehole and surface geological information. This research involves the development of inversion modeling software using a Borland C++ compiler as part of the Rapid Application Development (RAD) Studio. The novel inversion approach directly models known geology, and "a priori" uncertainties on the geologic model to allow …

Influence Of Orography On The Weather Patterns And Water Availability Of A Topographically Complex Chihuahuan Desert Region, Fernanda De La Cerda Camargo
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Arid and semi-arid ecosystems cover a large extent of the planet's land surface and are highly susceptible to/and dependent on resource availability patterns, especially precipitation. Topography affects large scale weather patterns and redistributes precipitation which creates a variety of microclimates in complex landscapes; how these patterns are modified, however, is still not fully understood. Climate change models for arid and semi-arid ecosystems predict a change towards more extreme precipitation events; understanding the mechanisms involved in redistributing precipitation is crucial for the protection of these areas. Indio Mountains Research Station (IMRS) is located in the northern Chihuahuan Desert and seems to …

Open Access Theses & Dissertations
We present the Generalized Gamma Distribution, study its properties and derive the estimators of the parameters. This distribution includes many standard forms, like: Gamma, Exponential, Weibull, Half Normal and others. Sum and ratios of independent generalized gamma lead to intractable forms. However approximation works well. In particular two-moment gamma and three moment normal approximations are shown to approximate the sum of k independent gamma as well as generalized gamma distributions.

Principles Of Thomas Pynchon's Literary Realities, Ira Anthony Walker
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Thomas Pynchon's literature is unique in subject and style. Postmodern by definition, Pynchon illustrates physics as a societal metaphor; Guy Debord's text The Society of the Spectacle suggests that these societal, literary, metaphors constitute and/or lead to a Spectacle. Through the analysis of an unpublished text: Minstrel Island, an early written short story: "Entropy," and a short novel: The Crying of Lot 49 the reader is capable of seeing a developing theme of physics as metaphor constituting multiple Spectacles. The narrative devices offered by Thomas Pynchon become Spectacular in nature and reflect the characteristics and environment of the tumultuous 1960s …
Incorporating Sustainability Into Urban Infrastructures: The Tension Between Bio-Cultural Aspects And Environmental Considerations, Shane Epting
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The following arguments focus on how to think about sustainability as it relates to technology and the non-human world within an anthropocentric framework. We end up with a picture showing that humankind needs to change the ways in which we look at anthropocentric concerns. Secondly, the discussion that leads up to the final picture details the urgency that guides the thinking behind the implementation of sustainability. Because, as the West learns to live in an entirely new sense that is consistent with holding humankind's desire for existence as a permanent situation, one finds that this notion must be paramount for …

The future of space exploration will require longer missions in order to better understand the conditions of near-Earth celestial objects, like the Moon or Mars. Future space missions will require the development of goods, such as propulsion fuel and structural materials, produced using the extraterrestrial resources available. The area that develops these technologies is called In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU). ISRU allows reducing the payload, and as a consequence reduces the energy consumption and cost of space travel. The production of structural materials on the Moon can be accomplished using Self-Propagating High-Temperature Synthesis (SHS). This work describes the combination of ISRU …

Prediction Of Ribonucleic Acid Secondary Structures Using A Heuristic Backtracking Search, Christopher Roman Cuellar
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Ribonucleic acid (RNA) is essential for all forms of life. RNA is made up of a large chain of nucleotide bases: Guanine (G), Uracil (U), Cytosine (C), and Adenine (A). An RNA strand can fold on itself to allow G-C, A-U, and G-U bases to form hydrogen bonds, this is known as a secondary structure. Knowing the secondary structure of an RNA chain is very important because it will allow researchers to better understand its specific functions. RNA will create secondary structures that tend to minimize their free energy. RNA secondary structure prediction is the attempt to predict physical folding …
