Modeling Correlated Data Via Copulas, Panfeng Liang
Modeling Correlated Data Via Copulas, Panfeng Liang
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Copulas are widely used to model the dependency structure among components of multi- variate data sets. Elliptical copulas, such as Gaussian copula, are most popular copulas being used since many data sets follow elliptical distributions or meta-elliptical distribu- tions (Fang et al. (2002)). However, today's approaches and software packages require us to assume the specific category, such as Gaussian or Student's T, of the elliptical cop- ula before estimating it. In this Thesis, we will propose a Bayesian method using Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods to estimate the density function of elliptical copulas without specifying it is the copula …
Combination Of Resampling Based Lasso Feature Selection And Ensembles Of Regularized Regression Models, Abhijeet R. Patil
Combination Of Resampling Based Lasso Feature Selection And Ensembles Of Regularized Regression Models, Abhijeet R. Patil
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
In high-dimensional data, the performance of various classiers is largely dependent on the selection of important features. Most of the individual classiers using existing feature selection (FS) methods do not perform well for highly correlated data. Obtaining important
features using the FS method and selecting the best performing classier is a challenging task in high throughput data. In this research, we propose a combination of resampling based least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) feature selection (RLFS)
and ensembles of regularized regression models (ERRM) capable of handling data with the high correlation structures. The ERRM boosts the prediction accuracy with …
Dust Storms And The Dispersal Of Aquatic Invertebrates In The Chihuahuan Desert Ecoregion, Jose Rivas Jr.
Dust Storms And The Dispersal Of Aquatic Invertebrates In The Chihuahuan Desert Ecoregion, Jose Rivas Jr.
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The Chihuahuan Desert surrounding El Paso, Texas is one of the most intense sources of dust in the Western Hemisphere. Within this vast desert are ephemeral wetlands with micrometazoan propagules contained within their sediment egg banks. Dispersal of aquatic microinvertebrates between habitats is vital for the success of their populations. Passive dispersal of the propagules provides an escape mechanism from unfavorable conditions. Upon desiccation of these habitats, windstorms can potentially transport propagules mixed within entrained sediments across regional scales. To study this process, I collected falling sediment from 91 windstorms, with 59 samples collected at the University of Texas at …

Code Smells Quantification: A Case Study On Large Open Source Research Codebase, Swapnil Singh Chauhan
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Research software has opened up new pathways of discovery in many and diverse disciplines. The research software is developed under unique budgetary and schedule constraints. The developers are often untrained transient workforce of graduate students and postdocs. As a result, the software quality hinders its sustainability beyond the immediate research goals. More importantly, the prevalent reward structures favor contributions in terms of research articles and systematically undervalues research code contributions. As a result, researchers and funding agencies do not allocate appropriate efforts or resources to the development, sustenance, and dissemination of research codebases. At the same time, there are no …

Formulation And Implementation Of Iterative Method For Generating Spatially-Variant Lattices, Manuel Fernando Martinez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The use of a matrix-free, memory-efficient approach to generate large-scale spatially variant lattices (SVL) was explored. A matrix-free iterative SVL generation algorithm was formulated and then implemented with a tremendous memory reduction observed. The algorithm consists of solving first-order central finite-differences along the entirety of the problem space point-by-point to obtain the grating phase function Φ(𝑠⃗) to which all desired spatially variant lattice properties are applied to. The algorithm was studied to identify key areas of data and task parallelism to exploit in heterogeneous computing systems consisting of clusters of central processing units (CPU) and graphics processing units (GPU) combinations. …

Precipitation And Transformation Of Iron-Sulfide Nanoparticles In Low-Temperature Aqueous Environment: Effects Of Reactant Iron And Sulfide Sources, Ezequiel A. Moreno Flores
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Iron sulfide nanoparticles assume an important role within a wide range of geological settings as indicators of redox environmental conditions and elemental cycling mechanisms. Initial precipitates of iron sulfide are exclusively nanoscale sized in low temperature aqueous conditions and have been reported to go through diverse morphological and phase transformations, possibly leading to the ultimate deposits of pyrite in geologic records of various times. A systematic understanding of how the early-stage nanoparticles of iron sulfide may develop into more crystalline iron sulfide forms is still lacking however. The major goal for this study was to illuminate the effects of the …
Seismic Analysis Of The 30 July 1972 Sitka Earthquake Aftershocks, Stress Drop Of Aftershocks In Cook Strait, New Zealand Following The 2013 Cook Strait And Lake Grassmere And 2016 Kaikoura Earthquakes, And 2d Seismic Tomography In The Brady Hot Springs Geothermal Site, Nevada, Juan Alejandro Ochoa Chavez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The 1972 Mw 7.6 Sitka earthquake is the largest earthquake to have occurred along the Alaska portion of the Queen Charlotte fault (QCF) in historic time. The QCF system forms the plate boundary between the Pacific and North American plates within southeastern Alaska and has accumulated enough slip since 1972 to produce a comparable sized event in the near future. Thus, it is important to better understand the controls on the rupture process of the 1972 mainshock and its aftershocks. Following the mainshock the U.S. Geological Survey installed a network of 11 portable seismographs that recorded over 200 aftershocks of …

Interestingly, the counterions that contain …
Investigation Into The Effects Of Copper Based Nanoparticles On Sugarcane (Saccharum Officinarium) And Zucchini (Cucurbita Pepo), Carlos Tamez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The widespread use of copper-based nanomaterials has been accompanied by an increasing interest to understand their potential risks. Due to high surface area to volume properties, nanomaterials are more reactive than their bulk counterparts. Copper nanoparticles are used in numerous products, and could enter the environment through their synThesis or incidental use. It is essential to understand the effects of nanoparticles on edible crops by performing both short-term and long-term experiments at relevant exposure concentrations. In order to evaluate biochemical and physiological effects crops, sugarcane and zucchini, were grown in soil amended with: Kocide 3000 (copper-based fungicide), nano-sized CuO (nCuO), …

Exploring Dynamic Triggering Of Earthquakes Within The United States & Quaternary Faulting And Urban Seismic Hazards In The El Paso Metropolitan Area, Richard Alexander Alfaro-Diaz
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Technological advances in combination with the onslaught of data availability allow for large seismic data streams to automatically and systematically be recorded, processed, and stored. Here, we develop an automated approach to identify small, local earthquakes within these large continuous seismic data records. Our aim is to automate the process of detecting small seismic events triggered by a distant large earthquake, recorded at a single station. Specifically, we apply time-domain short-term average (STA) to long-term average (LTA) ratio algorithms to three-component data to create a catalog of detections. We remove some of the false detections by requiring the detection be …

Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The Arctic environment is a dynamic part of Earth’s natural system and is currently undergoing rapid increasing air temperature and decreasing sea ice extent, leading to more open ocean waters. As open water areas become more prevalent, phytoplankton communities near the surface of the ocean can proliferate earlier in the year and are apt to reach higher concentrations by the end of the summer season. Phytoplankton biomass around the world has been known to produce a microscopic biofilm at the surface of the ocean composed of biogenic and biological particles which then become airborne and work as both cloud condensation …

The photovoltaic active materials composed of endohedral metafullerene and phthalocyanine derivatives are known as excellent electron donor-acceptor pairs. The tri-metallic nitride endohedral C80 fullerene exhibits high absorption coefficients in the visible region of the spectrum and has similar electron-accepting abilities as that of C60 fullerene, which can allow for higher efficiencies in OPV devices. In this study, we examine the effect of solvent on the charge transfer excitation energies of Sc3N@C80-ZnPc and Sc3N@C80-H2Pc donor-acceptor molecular complexes. Three different solvents with different polarity - water, toluene, and acetone are used. The solvent is modeled as a polarizable continuum as implemented in …
Low-Valent Synthons Of Titanium : Investigations On Structure-Reactivity Relationships, Rolando Aguilar
Low-Valent Synthons Of Titanium : Investigations On Structure-Reactivity Relationships, Rolando Aguilar
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Strategies for the functionalization of abundant, small molecules into products with added value provide a powerful approach to address environmental sustainability issues. Dinitrogen (N2), and carbon oxides (CO, CO2), are examples of the ample, yet, underutilized atmospheric feedstock of nitrogen and carbon building blocks to produce a variety of chemicals. Although, potentially valuable, small molecules are inert under most conditions, and as such, their industrial activation often requires heterogeneous catalysts operated under high pressures (200 atm) and temperatures (450-600 ºC).
To this end, great efforts in synthetic inorganic chemistry have been devoted to the generation of well-defined and highly reactive …

A Novel Set Of Weight Initialization Techniques For Deep Learning Architectures, Diego Aguirre
A Novel Set Of Weight Initialization Techniques For Deep Learning Architectures, Diego Aguirre
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The importance of weight initialization when building a deep learning model is often underappreciated. Even though it is usually seen as a minor detail in the model creation cycle, this process has shown to have a strong impact on the training time of a network and the quality of the resulting model. In fact, the implications of choosing a poor initialization scheme range from leading to the creation of a poorly performing model to preventing optimization techniques (like stochastic gradient descent) from converging.
In this work, we introduce and evaluate a set of novel weight initialization techniques for deep learning …

Two-photon absorption is a nonlinear optical process where two photons are absorbed by a molecule simultaneously. The probability of this quantum phenomenon is proportional to the quadratic excitation of light intensity. It has many applications in biomedical and materials research, such as two-photon fluorescence microcopy. The first project is to apply two-photon absorption induced bond cleavage in photoreactive materials for engineering 3D tissue scaffolds. The major challenge for growing thick 3D tissues is the lack of vasculature, where nutrients and oxygen can be delivered to the growing cells. Our collaborators have synthesized a novel polypeptide that is composed of 34-mer …
Quasi-Harmonic And Anharmonic Entropies In Transition Metals, Bimal K C
Quasi-Harmonic And Anharmonic Entropies In Transition Metals, Bimal K C
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Density functional theory (DFT) employing the quasi-harmonic approximation (QHA) is a robust method for evaluating thermal properties of solids. In the case of transition metals however, the method yields high values of the thermal pressure when compared to experimental data or with more direct methods like quantum-molecular dynamics (QMD) simulations. Surprisingly, there has not been to date, a systematic study aimed at understanding the reasons for these large discrepancies, particularly at low temperature, i.e. below the Debye temperature of the solid. Using Tantalum as a test model for which a lot of experimental data exist, thermal properties were evaluated employing …
Study Of Multielectron Redox Chemistry In Bimetallic Complexes And Metal-Free Macrocycles, Nancy Rodriguez Lopez
Study Of Multielectron Redox Chemistry In Bimetallic Complexes And Metal-Free Macrocycles, Nancy Rodriguez Lopez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Multielectron redox chemistry is fundamental for the activation of small molecules (e.g. H2O, CO2, CO, N2). Although these processes are of great importance, they are not well understood. Unravelling the mechanisms of electron transfer and its principles is essential for the design and development of efficient catalysts. Our approach towards the understanding of multielectron redox chemistry includes theoretical study of mechanistic pathways in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) by metal-free porphyrinoids, the study of electronic communication in non-symmetric multimetallic two-state models (D–B–A) and the tuning of the electronic properties of bimetallic systems (Mo, and Au) by ligand control.

Inverse Gaussian Ornstein-Uhlenbeck Applied To Modeling High Frequency Data, Emmanuel Kofi Kusi
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
With about 226050 estimated deaths worldwide in 2010, earthquake is considered as one of the disasters that record a great number of deaths. This Thesis develops a model for the estimation of magnitude of future seismic events.
We propose a stochastic differential equation arising on the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes driven by Inverse Gaussian (a,b) process. Inverse Gaussian (a,b) Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes offer analytic flexibility and provides a class of continuous time processes capable of exhibiting long memory behavior. The stochastic differential equation is applied to geophysics and financial stock market by fitting the superposed Inverse Gaussian (a,b) Ornstein-Uhlenbeck model to earthquake and …
Decision Making Under Uncertainty With Applications To Geosciences And Finance, Laxman Bokati
Decision Making Under Uncertainty With Applications To Geosciences And Finance, Laxman Bokati
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
In many practical situations, we need to make a decision. In engineering, we need to decide on the best design of a system, and, for existing systems â?? on the best control strategy. In financial applications, we need to decide what is the best way to invest money. In geosciences, we need to decide whether we should explore a possible mineral deposit â?? or whether we should perform more experiments and measurements (and what exactly). In some cases, we can compute the exact consequences of each decision - e.g., if we are controlling a satellite. However, in many other cases, …
Synthesis Of Advanced Functional Nanomaterials For Sustainable Water Treatment Technologies, Md Tariqul Islam
Synthesis Of Advanced Functional Nanomaterials For Sustainable Water Treatment Technologies, Md Tariqul Islam
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Water is the most essential resource for the sustenance of life. Water is also necessary for agriculture, industry, household, and environmental conservation. However, due to large population growth and industrial expansion, access to clean water is becoming increasingly difficult around the world. Current water treatment technologies have not changed in over one hundred years and require a large infrastructure due to their low efficiencies and large-scale needs. In this context, the utilization of advanced functional nanomaterials and the adaptation of nanotechnology could potentially allow for miniaturizing water treatment and develop de-centralized solutions for rural areas. This Dissertation presents the design, …
Fishers' Ecological Knowledge And Stable Isotope Analysis: A Social-Ecological Systems Approach To Endangered Species Conservation, Kathryn Rose Wedemeyer-Strombel
Fishers' Ecological Knowledge And Stable Isotope Analysis: A Social-Ecological Systems Approach To Endangered Species Conservation, Kathryn Rose Wedemeyer-Strombel
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Identifying developmental habitat is essential for understanding population structure and species resiliency, especially for critically endangered species. In long-lived, oceanic, migratory animals such as sea turtles, elucidating developmental grounds is particularly difficult. When data are deficient or challenging to acquire, scientists often lean towards traditional quantitative methods when a social-ecological systems approach could better provide crucial baseline data and guiding information. Fishers ecological knowledge (FEK), the combination of experiential and culturally transmitted knowledge, is expert knowledge and should be treated as such. In 2008, FEK led to the rediscovery of the critically endangered eastern Pacific (EP) population of hawksbill sea …

Interactions Of Bacterial Communities With Hydrous Sulfate Minerals In Water-Restricted Gypsic Environments: A Case Study Based In The White Sands National Monument, Brandon Nicholas Lajoie
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Microbial communities have been commonly found to survive and thrive in arid to hyper-arid gypsic environments that are considered hostile to most other forms of life. The mechanisms through which microbes have conquered these harsh environments remain poorly understood. Here I hypothesize that the microbial communities in water-restricted gypsic settings could benefit in terms of energy and water sources via their interactions with the abundant hydrous sulfate minerals [i.e., gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O)] that build up these niches. Gypsum is of high bio-relevance because its sulfate component may be used as electron acceptor by sulfate-reducing bacteria and the crystallization water may be …
Study Of D-Electron Systems With Fermi-Lowdin Orbital Self-Interaction Correction, Prakash Mishra
Study Of D-Electron Systems With Fermi-Lowdin Orbital Self-Interaction Correction, Prakash Mishra
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Density Functional Theory (DFT) is one of the very popular and versatile methods for calculations to study electronic structure, and the accuracy of DFT depends on the approximation used in the exchange-correlation functional. One of the known problems with the approximation is that the widely used density functional approximations (DFA) suffer self-interaction errors. Systems with d-electrons such as transition metal oxides often show deviation of DFT predicted behavior from experimental result. SIE tends to unphysically lower the energies of fractionally occupied state which leads to deviation from piece-wise linear behavior of total energy between two integer occupations. This leads to …

Confidence Intervals For The Expected P-Value, Emmanuel Kofi Abrefa
Confidence Intervals For The Expected P-Value, Emmanuel Kofi Abrefa
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The p-value is widely used in many application fields. In common practice, a scientific finding is deemed statistically significant if its resultant p-value is less than a pre-specified significance level, for example α = 0.05, albeit many statistically significant results are not reproducible in new studies. Mixed reasons including misuses, abuses, misunderstanding and misinterpretation arouse intensive debates and conservatives around the p-value from time to time over the years. Yet no reasonable solutions have been proposed. In this research, we make efforts to close the gap by advocating the use of confidence level for the expected p-value p0. This allows …
