Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Mixed metal oxides have been attracting more and more attention recently because of their advantages and superiorities, which can improve the electrochemical performance of single metal oxides. These advantages include structural stability, good electronic conductivity, and reversible capacity. In this work, uniform yolk-shelled ZnCo2O4 microspheres were synthesized by pyrolysis of ZnCo-glycolate microsphere precursors which were prepared via a simple refluxing route without any precipitant or surfactant. The formation process of the yolk-shelled microsphere structure during the thermal decomposition of ZnCo-glycolate is discussed, which is mainly based on the heterogeneous contraction caused by non-equilibrium heat treatment. The performances of the as-prepared …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

A combined strategy via mixing Mg(BH4)2·6NH3 with ammonia borane (AB) is employed to improve the dehydrogenation properties of Mg(BH4)2·6NH3. The combined system shows a mutual dehydrogenation improvement in terms of dehydrogenation temperature and hydrogen purity compared to the individual components. A further improved hydrogen liberation from the Mg(BH4)2·6NH3–6AB is achieved with the assistance of ZnCl2, which plays a crucial role in stabilizing the NH3 groups and promoting the recombination of NHδ+⋯HBδ−. Specifically, the Mg(BH4)2·6NH3–6AB/ZnCl2 (with a mole ratio of 1:0.5) composite is shown to release over 7 wt.% high-pure hydrogen (>99 mol%) at 95 °C within 10 min, thereby …

This research presents a useful electrophoretic deposition (EPD) technique for electrode fabrication from an aqueous colloidal solution of graphene to produce graphene electrodes by the deposition of graphene on to indium-tin oxide (ITO) coated glass. Resultant graphene electrodes are composited with conducting polymer (PEDOT), and platinum nanoparticles, to investigate their synergistic effects. Firstly, PEDOT is composited with graphene by electropolymerization on to the graphene layer. The graphene/PEDOT electrodes demonstrate an improvement in electrochemical response in tetrabutylammonium perchlorate/ acetonitrile solution. Secondly, graphene electrodes are composited with platinum by EPD of platinum nanoparticles on to the graphene layer. The resultant graphene/platinum electrodes …

The deposition of noble metals on soft and/or flexible substrates is vital for several emerging applications including flexible electronics and the fabrication of soft bionic implants. In this paper, we describe a new strategy for the deposition of platinum electrodes on a range of materials, including insulators and flexible polymers. The strategy is enabled by two principle advances: (1) the introduction of a novel, low temperature strategy for reducing chloroplatinic acid to platinum using nitrogen plasma; (2) the development of a chloroplatinic acid based liquid ink formulation, utilizing ethylene glycol as both ink carrier and reducing agent, for versatile printing …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

With the aim of fabricating multifunctional fibers with enhanced mechanical properties, electrical conductivity and electrochemical performance, we develop wet-spinning of composite formulation based on functionalized PEG-SWNT and PEDOT:PSS. The method of addition and loading are directly correlated to the quality and the ease of spinnability of the formulation and to the mechanical and electrical properties of the resultant fibers. Both the fiber modulus (Y) and strength (σ) scaled linearly with PEG-SWNT volume fraction (Vf). A remarkable reinforcement rate of dY/dVf = 417 GPa and dσ/dVf = 4 GPa were obtained when PEG-SWNTs at Vf ≤ 0.02. Further increase of PEG-SWNTs …

By controlling the SWNT-rGO electrode composition and thickness to attain the appropriate porosity and tortuosity, the electroactive surface area is maximized while rapid diffusion of the electrolyte through the electrode is maintained. This leads to an increase in exchange current density between the electrode and electrolyte which results in enhanced thermocell performance.

MgB2 bulk samples are synthesized through solid state reaction route using Mg precursors with different particle size by keeping the boron precursor unchanged. Scanning electron microscopy study of the fractured surface for all the samples depicts quite distinct structure depending on the Mg precursor. Big size of Mg precursor resulted in to largely elongated and deep pores while smaller one gave roughly ellipsoidal and shallow pore structure. Influence of the Mg particle size on the grain to grain connectivity reflected in the critical current density value which was greater for samples with smaller Mg precursor. All the synthesized samples …

In Situ Growth Of Nanoparticles Through Control Of Non-Stoichiometry, Dragos Neagu, George Tsekouras, David N. Miller, Herve Menard, John T. S Irvine

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Surfaces decorated with uniformly dispersed catalytically active nanoparticles play a key role in many fields, including renewable energy and catalysis. Typically, these structures are prepared by deposition techniques, but alternatively they could be made by growing the nanoparticles in situ directly from the (porous) backbone support. Here we demonstrate that growing nano-size phases from perovskites can be controlled through judicious choice of composition, particularly by tuning deviations from the ideal ABO3 stoichiometry. This non-stoichiometry facilitates a change in equilibrium position to make particle exsolution much more dynamic, enabling the preparation of compositionally diverse nanoparticles (that is, metallic, oxides or …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Using first-principles calculation, we propose an interface structure for single triple-layer FeSe on the SrTiO3(001) surface, a high-Tc superconductor found recently. The key component of this structure is the oxygen deficiency on the top layer of the SrTiO3 substrate, as a result of Se etching used in preparing the high-Tc samples. The O vacancies strongly bind the FeSe triple layer to the substrate giving rise to a (2 x 1) reconstruction, as observed by scanning tunneling microscopy. The enhanced binding correlates to the significant increase of Tc observed in experiment. The O vacancies also serve as the source of electron …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Here, we report a simple way to prepare stretchable polypyrrole (PPy)-based actuator materials that can be operated over a wide dynamic strain range and generate useable actuation displacements and pressures. The stretchable actuators were prepared as a laminated composite of PPy and a gold-coated roughened rubber sheet. By manipulating the corrugated surface of the rubber substrate, the stretchability of PPy was greatly improved. Gold-coated rubbers could be stretched to 30 percent without significant change in electrical resistance. The corrugated PPy/gold/rubber laminates successfully showed - 1 percents of actuation strain even when prestretched to 24 percent. The actuation strains were smaller …

A Study Of Tio2 Binder-Free Paste Prepared For Low Temperature Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells, Jeremy H. Yune, Inna Karatchevtseva, Gerri Triani, Klaudia Wagner, David Officer

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

A binder-free titania paste was prepared by chemical modification of an acidic TiO2 sol with ammonia. By varying the ammonia concentration, the viscosity of the acidic TiO2 suspension increased, thereby allowing uniform films to be cast. The photoelectrochemical performance of TiO2 electrodes, cast as single layers, was dependent on the thermal treatment cycle. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to characterize the extent of residual organics and found that acetates from the TiO2 precursor preparation were retained within the electrode structure after thermal treatment at 150 °C. Electrodes of nominal thickness 4 lm produced an energy conversion efficiency as high …

The stress gradient generated due to electrochemical oxidation/reduction of a conducting polymer in a bilayer actuator causes a bending movement. Here we report a comparative study of the displacement of bilayer actuators prepared using different conducting polymers. The effects of conducting polymers obtained from electrochemical or chemical synthesis route: different polymers (polypyrrole (PPy), poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) PEDOT and poly(3,3-dihexyl-3-4-dihydro-2H-thieno[3,4b][1,4]-dioxepine [PProDOT(Hx) 2]); and different electrolytes (0.1 M lithium trifluromethanesulfonate/propylenecarbonate (LiTFSI/PC) and 1-ethyl-3-methyl imidazolium trifluromethanesulfonate (EMITFSI)) on the displacement amplitude and displacement patterns of these actuators were investigated and compared. The results indicate that the bilayer actuator consisting of an electrochemically synthesized conducting polymer …

Effect Of Polymer Ligand Structures On Fluorescence Of Gold Clusters Prepared By Photoreduction, Luo Li, Zhen Li, Hui Zhang, Shoucun Zhang, Irfan Majeed, Bien Tan

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Blue emission fluorescent Au5 clusters with maximum quantum yield of 20.1% were synthesized by a simple photoreduction method using three specially designed tridentate polymer ligands. The evolution of fluorescent Au nanoclusters (Au NCs) under UV irradiation was studied by fluorescence, UV-Vis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic techniques, suggesting that the fluorescence of Au NCs is size-dependent and is associated with the presence of Au(i) ions in the Au NCs. The effect of polymer structure on the fluorescent Au NCs has also been discussed. These highly fluorescent Au NCs have potential applications in the fabrication of optoelectronic devices and light emitting materials.

Exact Asymptotic Behavior Of Magnetic Stripe Domain Arrays, Tom H. Johansen, Alexey V. Pan, Yuri M. Galperin Jan 2013

Exact Asymptotic Behavior Of Magnetic Stripe Domain Arrays, Tom H. Johansen, Alexey V. Pan, Yuri M. Galperin

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The classical problem of magnetic stripe domain behavior in films and plates with uniaxial magnetic anisotropy is addressed. Exact analytical results are derived for the stripe domain widths as a function of applied perpendicular field H, in the regime where the domain period becomes large. The stripe period diverges as (H-c - H)(-1/2), where H-c is the critical (infinite period) field, an exact result confirming a previous conjecture. The magnetization approaches saturation as (H-c - H)(1/2), a behavior that compares excellently with experimental data obtained for a 4-mu m thick ferrite garnet film. The exact analytical solution provides a new …

Investigation Of The Critical Behavior In Mn0.94nb 0.06coge Alloy By Using The Field Dependence Of Magnetic Entropy Change, J C. Debnath, P Shamba, A M. Strydom, Jianli Wang, S X. Dou

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The critical behaviour of Mn0.94Nb0.06CoGe alloy around the paramagnetic-ferromagnetic phase transition was studied based on the field dependence on magnetic entropy change. By using the obtained exponents, the modified Arrott plot is consistent with that by using conventional method. These critical exponents are confirmed by the Widom scaling relation. Based on these critical exponents, the magnetization, field and temperature data around Tc collapse into two curves obeying the single scaling equation MðH; e)¼ebf6(H/ebþc). The calculated critical exponents not only obey the scaling theory but also anastomose the deduced results from the Kouvel-Fisher method [J. S. Kouvel and M. E. Fisher, …

Phase Gap In Pseudoternary R1-Yry Mn2x 2-Xxx Compounds, Jianli Wang, S J. Kennedy, S J. Campbell, M Hofmann, S X. Dou

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Our neutron diffraction investigation of PrMn2Ge2−xSix reveals a clear separation into two magnetic phases, canted ferromagnetic (Fmc) and antiferromagnetic (AFmc), between x = 1.0 and 1.2 and a commensurate phase gap in the lattice, due to magnetostrictive distortion. This remarkable magnetoelastic phenomenon is driven by a nonuniform atomic distribution on the X site which in turn produces subtle variations in the local lattice and abrupt changes in the Mn-Mn magnetic exchange interaction. Our results show that coexistence of Fmc and AFmc phases depends on lattice parameter, chemical pressure from the rare-earth and metalloid sites, and …

Stable dispersions containing graphene and gellan gum are used to form composite films. Incorporation of graphene into the gellan gum matrix results in mechanical reinforcement and electrical conductivity at low and high graphene loading fractions, respectively. Graphene-containing gellan gum hydrogel films are prepared by immersion of composite films in Ca2+ cross-linking solutions. The resulting hydrogels are electrically conducting and exhibit reinforcement compared to the corresponding gellan gum hydrogels. 2013 Elsevier B.V.

Single-Pulse Terahertz Coherent Control Of Spin Resonance In The Canted Antiferromagnet Yfeo3, Mediated By Dielectric Anisotropy, Zuanming Jin, Zoltan Mics, Guohong Ma, Zhenxiang Cheng, Mischa Bonn, Dmitry Turchinovich

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

We report on the coherent control of terahertz (THz) spin waves in a canted antiferromagnet yttrium orthoferrite, YFeO3, associated with a quasiferromagnetic (quasi-FM) spin resonance at a frequency of 0.3 THz, using a single-incident THz pulse. The spin resonance is excited impulsively by the magnetic field component of the THz pulse. The intrinsic dielectric anisotropy of YFeO3 in the THz range allows for coherent control of both the amplitude and the phase of the excited spin wave. The coherent control is based on simultaneous generation of two interfering phase-shifted spin waves whose amplitudes and relative phase, dictated by the dielectric …

The Effect Of Dopant Pka And The Solubility Of Corresponding Acid On The Electropolymerisation Of Pyrrole, Eimear M. Ryan, Carmel B. Breslin, Simon E. Moulton, Gordon G. Wallace

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

In this paper, attempts to dope polypyrrole (PPy) with two small sized anionic drugs, diclofenac sodium salt (NaDF) and valproic acid sodium salt (NaVPA), are described. For PPy doped with DF-, unusual patterns in growth and morphology were observed. During the deposition of the polymer, the rate of electropolymerisation decreased with increasing time and higher applied potentials. The polymer had features of an insulating film, while SEM confirmed the presence of crystal-like shards on the surface of the polymer. Analyses of these crystals indicate them to be drug that may have precipitated out of solution. These findings suggest that insoluble …
