The Pb (In1/2Nb1/2) O3–Pb (Mg1/3Nb2/3) O3–PbTiO3 (PIN-PMN-PT) crystals were studied as function of phase and orientation. The properties, including the Curie temperature TC, ferroelectric-ferroelectric phase transition temperature TR/O-T, coercive field, and piezoelectric/dielectric responses, were systematically investigated with respect to the composition of PIN-PMN-PT crystals. The Curie temperature TC was found to increase from 160 to 220 °C with ferroelectric-ferroelectric phase transition temperature TR-T and TO-T being in the range of 120–105 °C and 105–50 °C, respectively. NaB3H8 has advantages over NaBH4 and NH3BH3, two most widely studied chemical hydrides for hydrogen storage via hydrolysis. NaB3H8 has an extraordinary high solubility in water and thus possesses a high theoretical capacity of 10.5 wt% H via hydrolysis, in contrast to 7.5 wt% for NaBH4 and 5.1 wt% for NH3BH3. NaB3H8 is reasonably stable in water which makes it unnecessary to add corrosive NaOH as a stabilizer as the case for NaBH4. Furthermore, hydrolysis of NaB3H8 can be catalyzed by a Co-based catalyst with fast kinetics that is comparable to Ru-based catalysts. Therefore, cost-effective hydrolysis of NaB3H8 is possible …

We propose a model to construct the phase diagram for type-II superconductors through molecular-dynamics simulation. In this model, the Abrikosov vortices interact with long-range repulsion and short-range attraction. We are able to obtain the phase diagrams consisting of the vortex lattice, the intermediate-mixed phase (IMP), and the disordered vortex phase in the B-T , B-κ, and B-q planes, where B is induction, κ is the Ginzburg-Landau parameter, and q is the relative strength of the attraction to repulsion interactions between vortices. Mg alloy AZ31 is an attractive candidate for coronary artery stents, as it possesses excellent biocompatibility in human body and good mechanical properties. However, AZ31 magnesium alloys generally have poor corrosion resistance in the body environment. This paper reports on the early stages of an investigation into the corrosion mechanism and the morphology of corrosion of AZ31 in simulated body fluid (SBF), The investigation will also consider ways of improving corrosion resistance of this alloy in SBF through the use of ionic liquids. Oxygen-free pyrene gas as a carbon (C) dopant was delinked and incorporated into highly dense MgB2 structure via a gas phase diffusion method. The technique offers the advantages that molecular C is homogeneously distributed into MgB2 and substituted at the boron sites without any severe deterioration of grain connectivity. The C substitution causes a significant shrinkage of the a-lattice parameter and an increase in the lattice strain, resulting in high disorder. We report the synthesis of self-organized titania nanotubes and nanocrystalline titania powders employing an alternative and novel approach. Integrating these nanostructures in a binder-free working electrode improved the capacitance up to 911 uF cm-2, which is around one to two orders of magnitude higher than the conventional electric double layer capacitors.

We reported the realization of assembling compact-designed supercapacitors using large-scaled freestanding and flexible single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) films as both anode and cathode. A prototype of the processing procedures was developed to obtain the uniform spreading of the SWCNT films onto the separators serving as both electrodes and charge collectors without metallic current collectors, leading to a simplified and lightweight architecture. The area of SWCNT film on a separator can be scaled up and its thickness can be extended. The difficult sintering of BaZr0.8Y0.2O3-δ(BZY20) powders makes the fabrication of anode-supported BZY20 electrolyte films complex. Dense BZY20 membranes were successfully fabricated on anode substrates made of sinteractive NiO-BZY20 powders, prepared by a combustion method. With respect to traditional anode substrates made of powders prepared by mechanical mixing, the anode substrates made of the wet-chemically synthesized composite NiO–BZY20 powders significantly promoted the densification of BZY20 membranes: dense BZY20 films were obtained after co-pressing and co-firing at 1300°C, a much lower temperature than those usually needed for densifying BZY20 membranes. BaZr0.8Y0.2O3-∂ (BZY)-NiO composite powders with different BZY-NiO weight ratios were prepared by a combustion method as anodes for proton-conducting solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). After heating to 1100°C for 6 h, the composite powders were made of a well-dispersed mixture of two phases, BZY and NiO. Using density functional theory, we investigated the position preference and diffusion mechanisms of interstitial oxygen ions in lanthanum silicate La9.33Si6O26, which is an apatite-structured oxide and a promising candidate electrolyte material for solid oxide fuel cells. The reported lanthanum vacancies were explicitly taken into account by theoretically determining their arrangement with a supercell model. The most stable structures and the formation energies of oxygen interstitials were determined for each charged state. A novel method to prepare redox monolayers on silicon electrodes has been developed that employs CuI-catalyzed oxidative acetylenic coupling reactions for molecular electronic type applications. As the first case study, ethynylferrocene was covalently immobilized onto an acetylene-terminated monolayer on a Si(100) surface to give a 1,3-diyne (CC-CC-) linked redox assembly. The derivatization process requires no protection/de-protection steps, nor activation procedures. The effect of the conjugated diyne linkage on the rate of electron transfer between tethered ferrocenyl units and the silicon electrode is benchmarked against well-established "click" products (i.e. 1,2,3-triazole linkage). We demonstrate that water is almost universally present on apparently dry self-assembled monolayers, even on those considered almost hydrophobic by conventional methods such as water contact goniometry. The structure and kinetics of nanoscale water adsorption onto these surfaces were investigated using X-ray and neutron reflectometry, as well as atomic force microscopy. Condensation of water on hydrophilic surfaces under ambient conditions formed a dense sub-nanometre surface layer; the thickness of which increased with exponentially limiting kinetics. In this paper we demonstrate the possibility of modifying porous silicon (PSi) particles with surface chemistry and recognition molecules (antibodies) such that these devices could potentially be used for single-cell identification or sensing. This is achieved by modifying PSi Rugate filters via hydrosilylation with surface chemistry that serves firstly, to protect the silicon surfaces from oxidation; secondly, renders the surfaces resistant to nonspecific adsorption of proteins and cells and thirdly, allows further functionality to be added such as the coupling of antibodies. The shear piezoelectric behavior in relaxor-PbTiO 3 (PT) single crystals is investigated with regard to the crystal phase. High levels of shear piezoelectric activity, d 15 or d 24 >2000 pC N -1, are observed for single-domain rhombohedral (R), orthorhombic (O), and tetragonal (T) relaxor-PT crystals. The high piezoelectric response is attributed to a flattening of the Gibbs free energy at compositions close to the morphotropic phase boundaries, where polarization rotation is easily accomplished by applying a perpendicular electric field. A metathesis reaction between unsolvated NaB3H8 and NH4Cl provides a simple and high-yield synthesis of NH4B3H8. Structure determination through X-ray single crystal diffraction analysis reveals weak N—Hδ+- - -Hδ-—B interaction in NH4B3H8 and strong N—Hδ+—Hδ-—B interaction in NH4B3H8·18-crown-6·THF adduct. Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) using the p-type semiconductor CuAlO2, in conjunction with a highly effective hole injecting dye and an iodide-triiodide-based electrolyte have been produced, demonstrating photocathodic behavior. An improved open-circuit voltage (VOC) of 333 mV was observed, compared to analogous devices using NiO, which can be explained by the CuAlO2 valence-band energy, which is lower on the vacuum scale than that of NiO. Incident photon-to-charge-carrier efficiency response confirms that the observed photocurrent is generated by the dye.

A one-pot synthesis of 2,6-dibromodithieno[3,2-b;2′,3′-d]thiophene (dibromo-DTT, 4) was developed. A key step was bromodecarboxylation of DTT-2,6-dicarboxylic acid, obtained by saponification of the diester 1. The donor-acceptor dye DAHTDTT (13), based on a central 2,6-bis[2′-(3′-hexylthienyl)]dithieno[3,2-b;2′,3′-d]thiophene core (9), was prepared and incorporated in a dye-sensitized solar cell (DSC), which exhibited an energy conversion efficiency of 7.3% with Voc of 697 mV, Jsc of 14.4 mA/cm2, and ff of 0.73 at 1 sun.

We report the synthesis of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (HANPs) by the coprecipitation method using calcium D-gluconate and potassium hydrogen phosphate as the sources of calcium and phosphate ions, respectively, and the triblock copolymer F127 as a stabilizer. The HANPs were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, and nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms. Removal of F127 by solvent extraction or calcination alters the structure of HANPs. The solvent-extracted HANPs were single crystals with their 〈001〉 axis oriented along the rod axis of the HANP, whereas the calcined HANPs contained two crystal phases that resulted in a spherical morphology. Hollow BiFeO3nanoparticles were synthesized by an electrospray route for the first time. The phase purity and structure have been investigated by x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. Transmission and scanning electron microscope investigations revealed that the as-obtained BiFeO3 hollow spheres were polycrystalline, with a shell thickness of 35 nm. The formation mechanism can be possibly explained by Ostwald ripening. Raman spectra have verified decreased vibrational frequencies in BiFeO3nanoparticles. These hollow and core-shell multiferroicnanoparticles exhibit significantly enhanced ferromagnetism from 5 to 600 K due to a broken spiral spin structure. The transport properties of domain walls in oxygen deficient multiferroic YMnO3 single crystals have been probed using conductive atomic force microscopy and piezoresponse force microscopy. Domain walls exhibit significantly enhanced conductance after being poled in electric fields, possibly induced by oxygen vacancy ordering at domain walls. The electronic conduction can be understood by the Schottky emission and Fowler-Nordheim tunnelling mechanisms. Our results show that the domain wall conductance can be modulated through band structure engineering by manipulating ordered oxygen vacancies in the poling fields.

In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (the PACE) contained powers for the taking of fingerprints, and samples in the form of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). In 2001, Section 64(1A) of the PACE was substituted with Section 82 of the Criminal Justice and Police Act. The change to legislation meant that a suspect of a crime would have their fingerprints and samples permanently stored on the police national computer (PNC) even after having been acquitted. The collection and storage of fingerprint profiles and DNA samples in the field of forensic science for non-violent crimes is highly controversial. While biometric techniques such as fingerprinting have been used in law enforcement since the early 1900s, DNA presents a more invasive and contentious technique as most sampling is of an intimate nature (e.g. buccal swab).
