Ab Initio Study Of Fh–Ph3 And Clh–Ph3 Including The Effects Of Electron Correlation, Z. Latajka, Steve Scheiner

Ab initio calculations are carried out for FH–PH3 and ClH–PH3 using a basis set including two sets of polarization functions. Electron correlation is incorporated via Møller–Plesset perturbation theory to second and (in part) to third orders. The basis set is tested and found to produce satisfactory treatments of subsystem properties including geometries and dipole moments as well as the proton affinity and inversion barrier of PH3. Electron correlation is observed to markedly enhance the interaction between PH3 and the hydrogen halides. Its contribution to the complexation energy is 30% …

Effects Of Basis Set And Electron Correlation On The Calculated Properties Of The Ammonia Dimer, Z. Latajka, Steve Scheiner

Ab initio calculations are carried out for (NH3)2 with a 6‐31G∗∗(1p,2d) basis set containing diffuse polarization functions. Electron correlation is included via second‐order Møller–Plesset perturbation theory (MP2). At the SCF level, the equilibrium R(NN) distance is 3.54 Å and the interaction energy is −2.35 kcal/mol. Inclusion of correlation enhances the attraction substantially, increasing the energy to −4.05 kcal/mol and reducing the intermolecular separation by 0.20 Å. Comparison with previous results at the SCF level demonstrates a variety of errors including exaggerated dipole moments, underestimation of polarization …

In Utah during the 1960s, the cost of producing electrical energy was as much, or in some cases more, by hydroelectric generation than by plants using steam from coal fired boilers. The relatively high hydropower cost was generally attributed to maintenance and replacement costs associated with plants that had been build in the 1920s. Utah Power & Light Company during the 1960 period decided not to renew power licenses and to abandon many small hdyroplants. Since 1973, rising coal and related fossil fuel costs have caused steam generation costs to accelerate and have made hydroelectric generation relatively more attractive. However, …

The technique of microsystem sediment-water simulation was used to predict water quality data for the proposed Jordanelle Reservoir, Heber City, Utah. Simulation microsystems were prepared for four sites located in the north arm of the reservoir basin including two sites located in an abandoned acid mine tailings pond. Data obtained from the tailings pond microsystems indicated that low pH water and high trace metal concentrations will exist in the north arm of the reservoir. These data suggested that some kind of membrane or compacted earth lining will be necessary to seal and contain the mine spoilage. Other sites in the …

Wildlife Damage Management Conference

Wildlife biologists are often involved in efforts to capture free-ranging felids and canids. The objective of these efforts is usually to remove individuals causing unwanted or excessive predation, or to obtain study animals. The most common method used to capture carnivores includes some type of leg-hold trap. Numerous references provide information on the technique of leg-hold trapping (Taylor 1971, Musgrove and Blair 1979); however few reports include an evaluation of these methods.

This handbook contains information on the best current practices to minimize disturbances and adverse impacts of surface mining on fish and wildlife resources. Current state and federal legislation was reviewed to determine those practices which were most compatible with the best technology currently available, fish and wildlife plans, and reclamation plans for the Uinta-Southwestern region of the U.S. The information presented includes risks, limitations, approximate costs, and maintenance and management requirements of each practice. Plans for the restoration of specific habitats, according to the best current practices, are also included.

F-region vertical drift data from Jicamarca, Peru show that equatorial east-west electric fields are sometimes perturbed 16-24 hours after the onset of geomagnetic storms. These disturbance dynamo electric fields, which must be caused primarily by the action of neutral winds at low and middle latitudes, decrease and sometimes even reverse the quiet time electric field pattern during both daytime and nighttime. The long delay excludes the possibility that gravity waves are responsible and suggests that the thermospheric circulation is disturbed. The data also show that after some storms there are no such delayed disturbances, a fact which may be due …

An efficient and simple purification procedure for cow brain glutaminase (L- glutamine amidohydrolase, EC 3.5.1.2) is described. The main steps consisted of acetone extraction and French press treatment in the presence of phosphate ions, precipitation of nucleic acids and lipids by 0.08 % protamine·S04 and high speed centrifugation (300,000xg), ammonium sulfate fractionation, and gel filtration on Sepharose 4B first as the low molecular weight and then as the aggregated form. The yield was 22% and the final preparation had a specific activity of 142 μmoles/min/mg. The purification was more than 8000-fold over crude brain homogenate. The enzyme showed one strong …

This research has focused on the sensitized photoisomerization step of a solar energy storage system based on the interconversion of norbornadiene (NBD) and quadricyclane (Q). Sensitizers studied in the photoisomerization were arylphosphine complexes of copper(I) halides [(Ph3P)3CuX, (MePh2P)3CuX, (DIPHOS)CuCl; X = Cl, Br, I and DIPHOS = Ph2P(CH2)2PPh2]. The lowest electronic excited state of the complexes can be an effective triplet energy sensitizer as evidenced by a maximum quantum yield of 1.0 with (MePh2P)3CuX. The updated IDF (inflow design flood) for Hyrum Reservoir could not be passed with the existing hydraulic structures. The labyrinth was the most economical alternative for an auxiliary spillway. The labyrinth spillway, a series of trapezoidal shapes in plan form, would provide the necessary spillway length and capacity within a comparatively small width. The spillway configuration was based on design curves developed in the Bureau of Reclamation Hydraulic Laboratory.

Cell-mediated immunity (CMI) in the lung has not been well characterized due to the lack of applicable tests. A major objective was to define pulmonary CMI serially in immunized and control lung lobes using the leukocyte procoagulant (LPCA) assay in young adult dogs. This was compared to a standard, but less reproducible CMI assay, macrophage migration inhibition facet (MIF). The CMI response, as measured by the LPCA assay, peaked in the blood 7 days after lung immunization. The pulmonary CMI response measured with cells obtained by bronchial lavage from the immunized and control lung lobes peaked at 9 to 12 …

This paper gives a survey of different methods of prime number testing. Emphasis has been given to algorithms based upon Fermat's Theorem: if p is an odd prime number, then p divides ap-a. All of the computer programs described in this paper have been written for use on microcomputers and so the feasibility of using microcomputers is also discussed. Finally, numbers of various forms have been considered for primality with special attention given to Mersenne and Fermat numbers. It is hoped that some of the information contained in this paper may provide worthwhile enrichment ideas for mathematics educators.

The purpose of this thesis was to evaluate a method for reducing the bias of estimation for autocovariance estimators. Two methods are compared, one is the standard method and the other is an adjustment method. The Monte Carlo method is used within comparison.

The bias and the mean squared error of the estimated autocovariance is computed for several time series models and two variations of the adjustment method of estimation. The results indicate some improvement in bias and mean squared error for the new method.

Studies have been carried out towards the synthesis of bicyclic octadidepsipeptide lanthionine 4, an analog of des-N-tetramethyl triostin A. Starting with a symmetrical lanthionine unit 5 (R1, R3 = Me; R2, R4 = t-butyloxycarbonyl), synthesized from the corresponding cystine by contraction with hexaethylphosphorus triamide, linear octadidepsipeptides 29 and 32 were synthesized.

Attempted cyclizations of 29 and 32 to the bicyclic octapeptide were unsuccessful.

The failure of the symmetrical approach to 4 prompted the synthesis of an unsymmetrical lanthionine unit with appropriate compatible protecting groups. Attempts to synthesize unsymmetrical lanthionines by nucleophilic displacement on …

The objectives of this research were to investigate the ecological importance of soil seed reserves and seed rain on regeneration of a good condition sagebrush-grass range vegetation after a wildfire and draw conclusions leading to better understanding and management of such ecosystems. Investigations were conducted for two successive years on a community where major plants were neither rhizomatous nor sprouting. Parts of the Overthrust Belt of western Wyoming and adjoining areas in Utah and Idaho contain geologic formations with significant accumulations of oil and natural gas. Some of these formations, though, yield gas that is contaminated with toxic hydrogen sulfide. As a consequence, the development of these so-called sour-gas reservoirs requires special safety procedures and technologies in order to prevent accidental releases of gas to the atmosphere that could cause adverse occupational and public health effects. Analytical water data obtained from two separate test programs at the LaVerkin Springs site, Washington County, southwestern Utah, were evaluated. During the first analyses, from February 11 through November 6, 1972, water samples were obtained weekly from 14 atmospheric springs. During the second analyses from November 1, 1979 through August 27, 1980, water samples were obtained weekly at aquifer pressure by pumping from a well representative of the 14 springs. Precisely simultaneous radar and satellite measurements at the altitude of reflection of a strong HF heating wave above the Arecibo Observatory were made on June 7, 1977. Parametric instabilities produce strong enhancements in the plasma line and ion line incoherent scatter radar echoes. These echoes also exhibit periodic deep fading that is attributed to a self-focusing instability. This explanation was confirmed by the in situ observation of electron density fluctuations with peak-to-peak amplitudes reaching at least 3% and a spatial dependence that corresponded closely to the radar fading pattern, at least for irregularity wavelengths ranging from a few hundred meters …

As a result of an extended period of abnormally high precipitation, prolonged snow melt, and subsequent high water tales, Utahns, in 1983 suffered from landslides, debris flows, flooding, and a dam failure. On April 30, 1983, the President determined the Spanish Fork slide-dam and Thistle flood covering Utah, Carbon, and Emery Counties was of sufficient seventy and magnitude to issue a Major Disaster Declaration under Public Law 93-288. The incident period was not closed until July 1, 1983. By the time all flooding had ceased, nineteen additional counties (over 75% of Utah) had been included in the Declaration.

The effects of constant temperatures (10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35 C) and ration size on the growth rates and activity of juvenile mosquitofish Gambusia affinis (mean wet weight, about 20 mg) were measured in laboratory experiments. On ad libitum rations of Tubifex spp. worms, food-consumption rates of mosquitofish were very high, ranging from 7% dry body weight/day at 10 C to 83%/day at 35 C. Growth increased from 0% dry body weight/day at 10 C to 21%/day at 30 C and declined slightly at 35 C. Gross efficiencies (100 growth/food consumption) increased from 0 at 10 C to …
