Multicollinearity And The Estimation Of Regression Coefficients, John Charles Teed
Multicollinearity And The Estimation Of Regression Coefficients, John Charles Teed
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The precision of the estimates of the regression coefficients in a regression analysis is affected by multicollinearity. The effect of certain factors on multicollinearity and the estimates was studied. The response variables were the standard error of the regression coefficients and a standarized statistic that measures the deviation of the regression coefficient from the population parameter.
The estimates are not influenced by any one factor in particular, but rather some combination of factors. The larger the sample size, the better the precision of the estimates no matter how "bad" the other factors may be.
The standard error of the regression …
Topological Properties Of C(X, Y), Chris Alan Schwendiman
Topological Properties Of C(X, Y), Chris Alan Schwendiman
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this paper is to examine the important topological properties of the function spaces BC(X,Y) and C(X,Y). Emphasis is given to the relationship between the metrizability of X and the separability of these function spaces. The paper is divided into three major parts: the preliminary definitions and theorems; the relationship between the topological properties of X and BC (X ,Y), for compact X; and the extension of the results of Part II for X not compact and for the case when we have C(X, Y).
Interpretation Of Principal Components, Marwan A. Dabdoub
Interpretation Of Principal Components, Marwan A. Dabdoub
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The principal component analysis can be carried out two ways. First the R-mode:
R = K'K
and the second is the Q-mode:
Q = K K'
where K is a data matrix centered by column or by row. The most commonly used method is the R-mode.
It has been suggested that principal components computed from either the R-mode or the Q-mode may have the same interpretation. If this is true, then interpretation of the principal components could be put on a much more intuitive level in many applications. This will occur whenever one type of principal component …
Conflict In Outdoor Recreation, Gerald R. Jacob
Conflict In Outdoor Recreation, Gerald R. Jacob
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The causes of conflict among users of outdoor recreation resources have received little attention from recreation researchers. Knowledge of factors responsible for conflict might assist recreation planners' attempts to reduce future instances of conflict and help management focus its conflict resolution efforts. A theory of conflict is offered as the first step in systematically procuring such knowledge. A definition and characteristics of outdoor recreation conflicts are presented; four comprehensive causes of user conflicts are proposed. Ten propositions are used to link these factors to conflict and suggest future research hypotheses. The social psychological dynamics of conflict, as described here, have …
A Discriminant Function Model Of Gray-Headed Junco Habitat, Andrew R. Grainger
A Discriminant Function Model Of Gray-Headed Junco Habitat, Andrew R. Grainger
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This paper presents a description of gray-headed junco habitat in the form of a model based on discriminant function analysis. Junco nests were found by searching randomly located grids on a 7.8 km2 study area in central Utah. Vegetation data was gathered on 500 m2 circular plots surrounding nests and contrasted with similar data from searched grids where nests were not found. The model explains 28 percent of the between-groups variance and correctly classifies 68 percent of the plots.
Plant cover types are good predictors of areas where gray-headed juncos nest, while plant community type descriptions do not …

Adaptive Significance Of Lactate Dehydrogenase B2 Isozymes In Rainbow Trout, Salmo Gairdneri And A Biochemical Genetic Comparison Of Cutthroat Trout (Salmo Clarki) Populations, Gerald Thomas Klar
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Rainbow trout lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) B2' B2' , B2' B2" and B2" B2" phenotypes were tested under a variety of conditions for swimming endurance, oxygen consumption rates, and blood pH, pO2, and lactate. The B2" B2" phenotype exhibited a lower swimming endurance, under a limited oxygen supply, than the B2' B2' and B2' B2" phenotypes. Blood pH at fatigue did not differ among the LOH phenotypes that swam under low oxygen conditions (2 mg/1). …
Park Visitor Responses To Natural Hazards, Lee H. Rentz
Park Visitor Responses To Natural Hazards, Lee H. Rentz
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Natural hazards have been an increasing problem in wildland recreation areas. This study attempted to identify factors affecting park visitor perception of and preparedness for hazards.
A model was formulated incorporating three major independent variables which might affect park visitor responses to hazards. These were: (1) previous experience, (2) information about hazards provided by the park administration (such as warnings located on signs or in brochures), and (3) visitor perception of whether responsibility for hazards rests with the individual or with an outside authority such as government or God. Trip length and knowledge of hazards were also thought to be …

Population Dynamics And Net Production Of Brown Trout (Salmo Trutta) In Two Areas Of A High Gradient Mountain Stream, Jeffrey C. Gosse
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Estimates of the brown trout (Salmo trutta) population were made in two areas of the Blacksmith Fork River, Cache County, Utah, from June 1972 to June 1973. Additional data were obtained on movement, growth, mortality, biomass, production, and yield.
Population density was highly variable in the area where habitat alterations had occurred, but was relatively uniform where the habitat was undisturbed. The brown trout exhibited little movement except during spawning season. Instantaneous growth and mortality rates are provided for each age group.
Mean annual biomass in the two areas was 12.0 and 10.2 grams per square meter and …
Physiological Response To Hooking Stress In Largemouth Bass (Micropterus Salmoides), A. Wayne Gustaveson
Physiological Response To Hooking Stress In Largemouth Bass (Micropterus Salmoides), A. Wayne Gustaveson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Recent concern about large initial and delayed mortalities resulting from tournament angling for largemouth bass has indicated that it would be desirable to further evaluate the fate of fish that are released after being captured by angling. This study was designed to evaluate sublethal physiological disruptions caused by hooking stress after largemouth bass were played under standardized conditions (0-5 minutes) and to estimate the time needed for recovery of the homeostatic mechanisms (to 72 hours). Blood lactate was used as a measure of metabolic fatigue; plasma osmolality and chloride measurements were used to evaluate osmoregulatory disturbances and gill ion-exchange; and …
Plant Succession Studies On Subalpine Acid Mine Spoils In The Beartooth Mountains, Patricia Lea Howard
Plant Succession Studies On Subalpine Acid Mine Spoils In The Beartooth Mountains, Patricia Lea Howard
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Large areas within alpine and subalpine tundra have been by disturbed by mining during this century. The most promising method for retarding deterioration of these areas is revegetation with native species through both seeding and transplants. One natural process of revegetation which occurs on portions of many existing disturbances seems to be the establishment of a few species that expand with time to form matts of plants.
At the McLaren Mine, located at 3000 m elevation in the Beartooth Mountains, Montana, active succession is occurring and is dominated by Carex species. Seed viability and successional patterns studies were conducted on …

Surficial Deposits And Geologic History, Northern Bear Lake Valley, Idaho, George C. Robertson Iii
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Detailed geologic mapping and subsurface study of late Pleistocene and Holocene sediments in northern Bear Lake Valley show at least four episodes of deposition of fluvial, marsh, bay, and lacustrine sediments. from oldest to youngest, these are the Ovid, Liberty, Wardboro, and Lifton episodes. These episodes are substantially different than those proposed by previous investigators. The informal term Bear Lake Formation is formally redefined here as the Bear Lake Group, and includes the newly defined Ovid Formation, Liberty Formation, Lanark Formation, and Rainbow Gravel. The overlying Wardboro Loess, also defined here, provides a probably age of 11,000 to 8,000 years …

Studies Toward The Synthesis Of A- And B- Mercapto Alanine Derivatives, And Of A,B- And B, B- Dimercapto Alanine Derivatives, Aldean James Kolar
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A convenient, economical, large scale synthesis of N-acetyldehydro-alanine (a-acetamidoacrylic acid) and its methyl ester was developed via a sequence of N-chlorination-dehydrochlorination. The method was extended to the synthesis of the corresponding N-benzoyl, N-phenylacetyl and N-benzyloxycarbonyl derivatives.
The conversion of a-methoxy-N-acetyl alanine derivatives to the corresponding a-mercapto alanine derivatives, using zinc chloride and an appropriate mercaptan, was investigated. Methyl a-methoxy-N-acetyl-D, L-alaninate was successfully converted to the a-acetylthio derivative, in 24% yield; however, a 90% yield could be obtained by treatment of the dehydroalanine derivative with hydrogen chloride gas in neat thiolacetic acid.
A facile conversion of the a-acetylthio derivative to the …

Estimation Of Μy Using The General Regression Model (In Sampling), Michael R. Manieri
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
The methods of ratio and regression estimators discussed by Cochran(l977) are given as background materials and extended to the estimation of µy, the population mean of the Y's, using a general regression model.
The propagation of error technique given by Deming(l948) is used as an approximation to find the variance of the estimator µy.
Examples are given for each of the various models. Variances of μy are calculated and compared
Factor Analysis Method, Stephen Hauwah Kan
Factor Analysis Method, Stephen Hauwah Kan
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
The logical steps performed when doing a factor analysis can be classified into three operation s. The first step concerns the exact mode of analysis and involves the type of centering, scaling and formation o f sums of squares . The second step involves extraction of initial factors. The algebraic basis of the factors are rotated in the last step to obtain a more easily interpreted set of factors. At each step several different methods have been suggested and appear in the literature. Two primary modes of factor analysis are commonly used an d they are denoted as R-mode and …

Classical statistical inference methods (parametric methods) have a common denominator, i.e. a population para meter (μ, o, n) about which we wish to draw inferences from a random sample. R) are selected. Point estimators of the parameters (X, S, Their sampling distribution is used to construct hypothesis testing decision rules or, confidence interval formulas. This is the reason for calling this method of obtaining inferences a parametric method. They are based on knowing the distribution of the population random variable from which the sampling distribution of the point estimator is determined. In addition, it is generally assumed that the population, …

Plasma Lines In The Auroral E Layer, Vincent B. Wickwar
Plasma Lines In The Auroral E Layer, Vincent B. Wickwar
All Physics Faculty Publications
The first successful measurements of plasma lines in the auroral E layer were made in January 1976 using the Chatanika incoherent scatter radar. Although they are considerably weaker than the signal from the ion component, the plasma line signals are readily detectable. Typical signal-to-noise ratios were about 4%. In this series of experiments, plasma lines were observed in the interval between 3.8 and 6.0 MHz, which corresponds to phase energies between 0.55 and 1.4 eV. They were found between 98 and 134 km; the derived plasma wave intensities varied between 0.06 and 1.0 eV, and the enhancements between 4 and …

Photoelectron Flux Build-Up In The Plasmasphere, G P. Mantas, Herbert C. Carlson, Vincent B. Wickwar
All Physics Faculty Publications
Processes which confine photoelectrons to the plasmasphere (e.g., collisional backscattering from the thermosphere and magnetic trapping due to pitch angle redistribution through Coulomb collisions in the plasmasphere) tend to increase the steady state photoelectron flux in the plasmasphere above the amplitude level that would otherwise have been attained. Theoretical calculations are presented of steady state photoelectron fluxes in the plasmasphere, for specified atmospheric and ionospheric conditions. (Observational plasma line intensity data for these conditions exist and will be compared elsewhere.) General features of the angular distribution are presented and compared with observations. The transparency of the plasmasphere and the backscattering …
Time Lag In Diffusion-Controlled Nucleation, David Peak
Time Lag In Diffusion-Controlled Nucleation, David Peak
All Physics Faculty Publications
Nucleation occurring in the presence of a dense solvent is accompanied by spatial correlations among the reactant clusters and monomers which affect the aggregation rates. The classical theory of nucleation, which does not take such correlations into account, overestimates the observed nucleation rate and underestimates the time lag in condensed systems. An explicit expression for the time lag in diffusion‐controlled nucleation is derived. Values associated with miscibility gap experiments differ from the classical predictions by factors of 5 to 10.

Reports
Introduction: The impact on agriculture of a large coal-fired stream electic plant (such as the proposed Intermountain Power Project near Lynndyl, Utah) or a large nuclear electic plant (such as proposed for the Green River Site near Emery, Utah) depends on a large number of factors. Among the most important are the technology used in power plant design, the site-characteristics of the plant location, the availability of water resources in the vicinity of the plant, the quality of the available water, and the types of agricultural uses and their water requirements. Some of these factors can be defined by obtaining …

Engineering Properties And Slope Stability Settlement Analysis Related To Phosphate Mine Spoil Dumps In Southeastern Idaho, Richard E. Riker, Loren R. Anderson, Roland W. Jeppson
Reports
The engineering properties of waste spoil from phosphate mines in Southeastern Idaho were determined through field and laboratory testing. Based on these properties, the slope stability and settlement characteristics of phosphate spoil dumps were determined. Hypothetical examples illustrate possible modes of foundation failures. Such failures might occur when weak foundation soils exist of when there is a lack of embankment-foundation preparation prior to the disposal of waste material. Adequate protection against slope failure occurring through the embankment material can be accomplished by grading embankment finish slopes to 2 ½ horizontal to 1 vertical or flatter and taking proper caution to …

This study deals with unsaturated, unsteady water movement through hetergeneous porous media. The specific problem investigated is the transient three-dimensional sxisymmetric flow resulting from water being applied on a horizontal circular area. The heterogeneity of the soil is described by allowing any or all of the five parameters in the Brooks-Corey equations to be any continuous function of depth. Methodologies for obtaining numerical solutions to the resulting nonlinear partial differential equation and its associated initial-boundary value problem have been developed an dimplemented in a computer program. The numerical solution is based on the Crank-Nicolson method of finite differencing and the …
