Environment And Communiy Organization In Grasslands Of Canyonlands National Park, Edgar F. Kleiner, K. T. Harper Jan 1972

Environment And Communiy Organization In Grasslands Of Canyonlands National Park, Edgar F. Kleiner, K. T. Harper

Canyonlands Research Bibliography

Sixty uniformly distributed stands in adjacent areas, 40 in Virginia Park (virgin) and 20 in Chesler Park (grazed), were analyzed. Cryptogamic and vascular species were recorded; cover was analyzed by the point sampling method, and frequency by means of 25 quadrats (each 0.125 m^2) per stand. The prevalent species (26 in Virginia, 23 in Chesler) were selected on the basis of a constancy-times-frequency index. Interspecific association patterns were determined by means of simple procedures based on quadrat frequency values for each species in the individual stands. Major environmental variables were recorded at each stand, and soil samples from four depths …

Water Resources Of Part Of Canyonlands National Park, Southeastern Utah, C. T. Sumsion, E. L. Bolke Jan 1972

Water Resources Of Part Of Canyonlands National Park, Southeastern Utah, C. T. Sumsion, E. L. Bolke

Canyonlands Research Bibliography

Canyonlands National Park is in about the center of the Canyon Lands section of the Colorado Plateaus physiographic province in southeastern Utah. The part of the park discussed embraces an area of about 400 square miles comprising isolated mesas, precipitous canyons, and dissected broad benches near the confluence of the Green and Colorado Rivers, the only perennial streams in the area. The climate is arid to semiarid; normal annual precipitation ranges from less than 8 to about 10 inches. Potential evapotranspiration is about 41 inches annually.

Geology of the park is characterized by nearly horizontal strata that dip gently northward. …

The Colorado Plateau, Robert Durrenberger Jan 1972

The Colorado Plateau, Robert Durrenberger

Canyonlands Research Bibliography

The Colorado Plateau was one of the last areas in the United States to be developed economically. Before the 1880s it was virtually empty except for Indians. Today the vast scenic and energy resources of the area are under development, and projections for future development are frightening. Problems of land use management are directly related to the fragmented nature of landholdings. Present methods of consolidation are inadequate, and new approaches to the organization of space must be devised if further degradation of the environment is to be prevented.

Optimizing Resistance Coefficients For Large Bed Element Streams, D. E. Overton, Harl E. Judd, C. W. Johnson Jan 1972

Optimizing Resistance Coefficients For Large Bed Element Streams, D. E. Overton, Harl E. Judd, C. W. Johnson

Reports

This is a report of a comparison of Darcy resistance coefficients calculafed for previously reported laboratory data and those calculated for large bed element streams. Large bed element (LBE) streams exist frequently in nature where rocks derived from valley walls or from channels cutting through ancient glacial or fluvial deposits are moved only under conditions of extreme flood. The height of bed elements is a significant part of the mean depth of flow. The stream gradients are high and are quite stable for all but the highest flows.

Development Of Regional Supply Functions And A Least-Cost Model For Allocating Water Resources In Utah: A Parametric Linear Programming Approach, Alton B. King, Jay C. Andersen, Calvin G. Clyde, Daniel H. Hoggan Jan 1972

Development Of Regional Supply Functions And A Least-Cost Model For Allocating Water Resources In Utah: A Parametric Linear Programming Approach, Alton B. King, Jay C. Andersen, Calvin G. Clyde, Daniel H. Hoggan

Reports

The development and allocation of the water resourcse within a state require water planners to prepare plans far in advance of the actual time new facilities are required. It is not easy to identify and evaluate all the possible alternatives for providing water which incorporate broad objectives such as economic efficiency, social welfare, regional development, recreation benefits, and conservation of environment. Water resources development entails the modification of a natural hydrologic system to better meet man's needs. The interrelationships among elements of the hydrologic system to better meet man's needs. The interrelationships among elements of the hydrologic system are relatively …

Conflicts In Water Managment, A. Alvin Bishop Dec 1971

Conflicts In Water Managment, A. Alvin Bishop

Faculty Honor Lectures

Today we hear a lot about the "quality of life" and the "quality of the environment," two terms that everyone understands, but as yet no one has defined. Like others, I will not attempt a definition but introduce my subject by saying that water is intimately tied up with both our life and our environment, and its management has a profound effect for good or bad, depending upon the point of view. Today also, clean water and anti-pollution are popular crusades. Someone or something has to be responsible and engineering and science are convenient scapegoats. Considerable emotionalism is involved and …

Sevier River Basin Floods 1852-1967, United States Department Of Agriculture, Economic Research Service, Forest Service, Soil Conservation Service Sep 1971

Sevier River Basin Floods 1852-1967, United States Department Of Agriculture, Economic Research Service, Forest Service, Soil Conservation Service

Elusive Documents

This chronology of Sevier River Basin floods extends from 1852 to

1967. Most common and destructive are dry mantle floods, which flow as

a muddy mortar-like substance containing 40 to 55 percent water. Hundreds

of tons of protective topsoil are removed from watershed lands,

debris and boulders are picked up as the flow travels down steep stream

channel gradients, and then the flood is debouched into communities and

on to productive cropland.

Analysis Of Water Reuse Alternatives In An Integrated Urban And Agricultural Area, A. Bruce Bishop, David W. Hendricks Sep 1971

Analysis Of Water Reuse Alternatives In An Integrated Urban And Agricultural Area, A. Bruce Bishop, David W. Hendricks

Reports

Intoduction

The growing demands on our existing water supplies and the current problems of water shortage emphasize the need for a comprehensive approach to analysis and planning of water reuse. The primary focus, heretofore, has been on the treatment technology for achieving water reuse.

The concept of reuse, however, should be broadened to consider a totally integrated urban and agricultural system. This necessitates a systems analysis where water reuse, together with all other water dispositions, is considered in the context of its contribution to the total water resources pool of a region.

The components of the water resource system are …

U. S. U. Mathematical Programming Package, R. Gary Goodwin May 1971

U. S. U. Mathematical Programming Package, R. Gary Goodwin

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Solving mathematical programming problems without the aid of electronic computers is very time consuming even for a mathematical model consisting of only a few constraints and variables. The objective of this report is to illustrate the use of mathematical programming computer routines available at Utah State University. Computer routines discussed are the International Business Machines (IBM), Mathematical Programming System (MPS) package, a quadratic programming routing, a zero-one integer programming routing, and a transportation code. The MPS package is a product of IBM; the quadratic programming routing was develop by the author: the last three routines were obtained from the IBM …

A Monte Carlo Evaluation Of A Nonparametric Technique For Estimating The Hazard Function, Sheng Jia Lin May 1971

A Monte Carlo Evaluation Of A Nonparametric Technique For Estimating The Hazard Function, Sheng Jia Lin

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

This research is primarily concerned with the estimation of the Hazard functions, the Hazard function is the failure rate at time t, and is defined as -R '(t)/R(t), so it plays an important role in Reliability.

In order to compare and evaluate the estimation methods, it is convenient to select one distribution in this research. Since the Weibull distribution is a useful distribution in Reliability, the Weibull distribution is used in this paper.

Torus Knots, David S. Bradley May 1971

Torus Knots, David S. Bradley

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

We have compiled here many interesting results concerning a particular collection of knots called torus knots. Torus knots are merely simple closed curves imbedded in an unknotted torus T2 in E3. We show that the fundamental groups of T2, π(T2), is the direct product of the additive group of integers with itself. The ordered pair (p, q) in Z x Z determines an equivalence class of loops on the torus, and we show in Section II that the class [(p, q)] contains a loop whose image is a simple closed curve if and …

Integral Representation Theorems, Leiko Hatta May 1971

Integral Representation Theorems, Leiko Hatta

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Since F. Riesz showed in 1909 that the dual of C[0,1] is BV[0,1] (the functions of bounded variation on [0, 1] with || g ||BV = V(g)) via the Stieltjes integral, obtaining representations for linear operators in various settings has been a problem of interest. This paper shows the historical manner of representations, the road map type theorems and representations obtained via the v-integral.

Fitting Some Families Of Contagious Distributions To Biological And Accident Data, Yung-Sung Lee May 1971

Fitting Some Families Of Contagious Distributions To Biological And Accident Data, Yung-Sung Lee

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Four families of contagious distributions--generalized Poisson distributions, generalized binomial distributions, generalized Pascal distributions, and generalized log-zero distributions--are investigated in this thesis.

The family of generalized Poisson distributions contains five distributions: the Neyman Type A, the "Short," the Poisson binomial, the Poisson Pascal, and the negative binomial. The family of generalized binomial distributions contains eight distributions: the binomial Poisson, the binomial binomial, the binomial Pascal, the binomial log-zero, the Poisson with zeros, the binomial with zeros, the Pascal with zeros, and the log-zero with zeros. The family of generalized Pascal distributions contains four distributions: the Pascal Poisson, the Pascal binomial, the …
