A technique that will adequately describe the physical condition of water in the soil has long been desired by scientists. The method should include the effect of soluble materials on the osmotic pressure of the soil solution, and also the effect of surface force action between the soil and soil water.
Parker (8) demonstrated that the freezing point was reduced in the presence of finely divided material. This suggested the possibility of using the cryoscopic procedure to measure the physical condition of water soil. The study of the Utah sculpin in Logan River was based on 801 specimens collected during 1949 to March 1951. Numbers of fish examined for various catagories of the study wares length-frequency, 495; aging by vertebrae, 407; length-weight relationship, 601; and food habits, 275.
Fish were collected by use of an electric shocking machine generating 600 watts and 220 volts. Numbers of fish occurred as high as 150 per tenth mile of stream. Preferred habitats occurred in areas of coarse gravel and small rocks.
Vertebrae dissected from the fish were used in age determination. Length-frequency proved to be a general …

Seeding deteriorated range lands efficiently and economically has become one of the most promising means of improving the agricultural economy of the western range states. By providing the most rapid means of increasing the quantity and improving the quality of forage for livestock, and aiding in the prevention of soil erosion, artificial seeding contributes directly to the stability of agriculture.

The Logan River heads in the southeastern corner of Franklin County, Idaho, and runs in a south and westerly direction. It enters the state of Utah through the northern boundary in the northeast corner of Cache County. The main stream is fed by two tributary streams which head in separate directions a few miles apart. The Franklin Basin branch is the main contributing tributary while the Beaver Creek branch is nearly as large.

Location, markets, hard surface roads and other transportation facilities, churches, taxes, schools, and utilities are major factors in the monetary value of land, yet these things do not contribute to the land’s productivity. In this bulletin the only factor considered in determining the agricultural value of land is its productive capacity.
The three major factors in the productive value of land are water, climate, and soil.
These three factors are the principal ones in crop production. If any one of them is unfavorable to plant growth, it can inhibit or even prevent plant growth regardless of how favorable the other …

Potassium is one of the essential plant nutrient elements. It is used by plants in the synthesis and distribution of carbohydrates (25)2 and in the formation of proteins and oils. Potassium also seems to exert many of its effects by influencing enzymatic activity in cells.
Potassium occurs as the monovalent cation on plant cells and undoubtedly exerts important effects upon such phnomona as the permiability of the cytoplasmic membranes and hydration of protoplasma. Plants assimilate potassium either from the soil solution or directly from the exchange complex.

Chlorosis of plants from a lack of available iron is one of the most common plant nutrient problems of the calcareous soils of the west. The disease is characterized by a yellowing of the plant leaves and is accompanied, in severe cases, by a partial root death and premature defoliation (3). In addition to reducing growth, the disease greatly reduces the quality and yield of plants.
Many types of plants are affected by iron chlorosis. In Hawaii and Porto Rico rice, sugar cane and pineapple are susceptible, while in California and Arizona, citrus trees are seriously affected. In Utah apples, …

One of the principal fertility problems of calcareous soils is the lack of available phosphates. The factors which control this availability are not completely understood. One hindrance to the solution of the problems involved results from confusion of the concepts of solubility and availability. Availability is the net effect of the chemical state of a plant nutrient element and the ability of the plant to utilize the forms of the element present under the existing chemical and physical environmental conditions. A memorandum of Agreement has been written between the Soil Conservation Service and the Bureau of Reclamation, relative to the experimental installation of test section of soil-cement and asphaltic canal lining to determine their durability and permeability. These test sections are to be installed at the Experimental Station, Logan, Utah. The Bureau of Reclamation requests two types of soil for the soil-cement studies, a fine sandy soil, poorly graded with little or no silt (Classification Symbol SP) and a find sandy soil with excess silt (Classification Symbol SF-Silty). A compaction test was performed on the soil (-1/2") material, and mechanical analysis, specific gravity, and percolation-consolidation test was made in a large (19&1/2" diameter) percolator, cylinder and the material was well compacted into the cylinder. A consolidating load equivalent to a 20-foot fill was applied. Because it was believed that some of the fine sand might be transported through the gravel and rock by the percolating water, a 14-mesh screen and a 2-inch later of clear fine gravel (3/16" - 3/8") was placed over the gravelly material being tested. The Dry Lake section of the Brazer formation, totalling 3100 feet in thickness, is an excellent exposure containing an abundance of fossils many of which are well preserved. The fauna indicates that the formation is to be correlated with the Upper Iowan and Chester series of the type Mississippian system in the Mississippi Valley section. Substantial fossil evidence indicates the following correlation for the Brazer formation members. The C unit represents the western equivalent of the Middle Meramec group, i.e., the Salem and St. Louis limestones. The D member is decidedly Ste. Genevieve in general faunal aspects but, because of …

Phosphate deposits in the western United States have been the subject of considerable discussion in the last decade, and during the last few years much interest has been aroused in them. Phosphate was first discovered in this area in 1889, but it was not until 1906 that the United States Government took active interest in the study of these deposits. The investigation by the government of the occurrence of western phosphate was begun by Weeks and Ferrier (10), and later carried on by others. Recent reports from many parts of the United States indicate that the so-called zinc-deficiency disease is wide spread. It affects some varieties of trees in some areas and all varieties in other areas, and occurs from Florida westward to the Pacific coast and northward to the Canadian line. Although the disease is more prevalent in trees, it is also known to affect annual plants.
A recent survey of Utah orchards shows a wide-spread occurrence of little-leaf, a zinc deficiency disease, in fruit trees. The disease was found to be common on the upper sandy soils between Ogden and Salt Lake …

An exhaustive field study of the Cambrian stratigraphy of the northern Wasatch region indicates that in addition to the Blacksmith Fork section there are two complete and better exposed middle and upper sections. Several other good exposures of the lower Middle Cambrian section have been studied in detail. The Spence shale is found to be a member low in the Langston, not the basal member of the Ute. Relative ages of the Spence shale and Ptarmigania faunas have been determined. Other Cambrian faunal zones have been discovered and are discussed. Paleontologic evidence suggests that the Nounan formation is of Upper …

That the higher valleys of the Wasatch Mountains were occupied by Pleistocene glaciers has long been known. King, Hague, and Emmons, geologists of the Fortieth Parallel Survey, the first to undertake a systematic study of any part of the Wasatch Mountains, recognized this fact and their report includes a map which shows in a rough way the extent of the glaciated areas in the Central Wasatch (11 ). In 1909 Atwood (1) made a detailed study of the glacial features of the Central Wasatch in connection with his study of glaciation in the Uinta Mountains. He mapped the deposits of …

Investigators in soils have long recognized the importance of the colloidal fraction of soil, and also the almost inseparable problem of replaceable bases. It is generally accepted that the replaceable base fraction of a colloid controls to a large degree the physical properties exhibited by it. Volumes of work have been written on the problem of controlling the reactions of this fraction and on studies of the properties exhibited by it when it is saturated with various cations. Each worker has proceeded in his own individual way or followed the example set by some previous worker with specific modifications.

Cereal grains were known to be notably deficient in the anti-rachitic principle even before the discovery of vitamin D. Clinicians had associated a type of rickets of infancy, characterized by an over-weight, flabby, bowlegged condition, with a diet consisting mainly of cereals. Mellanby (1) in 1921 concluded that this type of rickets is induced by overfeeding with carbohydrates. He also showed in the same report, however, that oatmeal, although it contains less carbohydrates than the other grains tested, possesses a special tendency toward rachitogenesis.

The reclamation of water-logged land by suitable yet inexpensive forms of drainage is becoming a problem of constantly increasing magnitude. A fairly large portion of the extensive land areas, once considered as worthless has proved to be valuable by the introduction of proper drainage systems. Land areas, in which drainage in its simpler forms has proved inadequate, could perhaps be made valuable were it possible to develop an inexpensive yet effective form of drainage.

The geological column in northern Utah has had very little detailed study. Those who have made reports on this section have done so only in a very general way, making no detailed sections of any part of the column, excepting that of the Cambrian made by Walcott.1 Other work has been done by Mansfield2 in southeastern Idaho and a general section of the Devonian made in Green Canyon, Bear River Range, Utah by Kindle.3
