The Provenance Of The Jacobsville Formation Of The Upper Peninsula Of Michigan Through A Petrographic Study, David Walter Lindsay Apr 1986

The Provenance Of The Jacobsville Formation Of The Upper Peninsula Of Michigan Through A Petrographic Study, David Walter Lindsay

Masters Theses

The Upper Keweenawan Jacobsville Formation source areas were mixed source terranes with dominant terrane types changing regionally in relative abundances of sediment contribution. Dominant source terranes were older sediments, including a weathered soil zone, Upper Keweenawan Freda Sandstone and other recycled sandstones; plutonic Precambrian basement rocks;. Middle Keweenawan Portage Lake Volcanics; and the chlorite to staurolite grade metamorphic rocks and iron ranges of Michigan’s upper peninsula.

Depositional environments of the formation's four facies types range from fluvial to deltaic/lacustrine. Sediments were in transport for a short distance, resulting in grain freshness and angularity, moderate sorting and preservation of unstable sediments. …

Syntactic Representation And Analysis Of The Cognitive Structures Underlying Ritual Acts, Robert G. Hardin Apr 1986

Syntactic Representation And Analysis Of The Cognitive Structures Underlying Ritual Acts, Robert G. Hardin

Masters Theses

A formal grammar was proposed by Lawson and McCauley (1980) to model the cognitive structures underlying an informant's representation of religious ritual acts. This study classifies the language generated by that grammar as context-sensitive, presents an LR(1) parser for the language, and specifies a computer program to implement that model. The system functions as an Intelligent assistant using techniques involving rule-based systems, non-monotonic logic, and multiple levels of abstraction. Knowledge is represented in a parse tree, rules stored as patterns, and the inference engine uses a pattern matcher. The consequences of an act change over time and can change previous …

Simultaneous Knudsen- And Torsion-Effusion Measurements Of The Vapor Pressures Of Triphenyl Aluminum And Triphenyl Boron, Steven Wayne Govorchin Apr 1986

Simultaneous Knudsen- And Torsion-Effusion Measurements Of The Vapor Pressures Of Triphenyl Aluminum And Triphenyl Boron, Steven Wayne Govorchin

Masters Theses

The sublimation pressures of triphenyl aluminum and triphenyl boron have been determined from simultaneous measurements of the rate of mass effusion and torsional recoil. For triphenyl aluminum the measured vapor presures are expressed by the equations:

logio (Pk/P°) = (12.76 ± 1.25) - (8214 ± 572) (K/T)

logio (Pt/p °) = (12.83 ± 1.34) - (8206 ± 615) (K/T)

where Pk and Pt are the pressures measured by the Knudsen-effusion and torsional-recoil techniques, respectively, and p° = 101.325 kPa. For triphenyl boron the measured vapor pressures are expressed by the equations:

log …

Petrography, Diagenetic History, And Development Of Porosity In The Richfield Member Of The Lower Middle Devonian Lucas Formation, Northeast Isabella County, Central Michigan Basin, Kevin James Sullivan Apr 1986

Petrography, Diagenetic History, And Development Of Porosity In The Richfield Member Of The Lower Middle Devonian Lucas Formation, Northeast Isabella County, Central Michigan Basin, Kevin James Sullivan

Masters Theses

The Richfield Member of the lower Middle Devonian Lucas Formation is represented in the subsurface of northeast Isabella County, Michigan as a 180-foot-thick sequence of Interbedded limestone, dolomite and anhydrite. Richfield lithofacies within the study area reflect deposition in a complex patchwork mosaic of evaporative supratidal, in tertid al, shoal, and subtidal environments.

The present variations in Richfield porosities were caused almost entirely by post-depositlonal diagenetic changes. The carbonate units have undergone pervasive dolomltlzation of mud matrix, leaching of allochems, and extensive anhydrite void -fillin g . The best porosity developments are associated with partial to complete dolomitizatlon of the …

The Statistical Analysis Project is a computer program that interacts with a person to discover the type of statistical test that person should use. Essentially, this program is intended to assist students, faculty and researchers in choosing the correct statistical procedure to use in a particular situation. For example, there are many different types of tests a person can use to test the mean of data but each test is used in a different situation. This program will tell you which test to use based on the situation you give it. This project was started by Anika Forsblad in 1985.

The Response Of The Kentucky River Drainage Basin To A Lowering Of Base Level Control, David B. Warwick Dec 1985

The Response Of The Kentucky River Drainage Basin To A Lowering Of Base Level Control, David B. Warwick

Masters Theses

The Kentucky River has responded to a lowering of base level control by: 1) deepening the course of its channel; 2) cutting off meanders as incision proceeded; 3) developing knickpoints on tributaries; 4) widening its valley; and 5) dissecting the upland surface.

Field work involved surveying streams to obtain profiles. Twenty streams covering 125 miles of river from Carrollton to Camp Nelson, Kentucky were surveyed. Knickpoints were defined from these profiles. Data from stream profiles showed knickpoint distances decreasing with increasing distance up river. Map work involved obtaining data for hypsometric curves. Hypsometric integrals were determined from these curves. Data …

On Common Subgraphs, Hung Bin Zou Dec 1985

On Common Subgraphs, Hung Bin Zou

Dissertations

A greatest common (induced) subgraph of graphs G(,1) and G(,2) of equal size is a (an induced) common subgraph (without isolated vertices) of G(,1) and G(,2) having maximum size. For a given graph L, a graph G is locally L if the induced subgraph of the neighborhood of each vertex of G is isomorphic to L (L is called a common link). Several topics concerning these concepts are investigated in this dissertation. An historical background to these topics is given in Chapter I.

Chapter II is devoted to the topic on highly connected unique greatest common subgraphs of graphs. We …

Reactions Of Supercritical Water With Quinolone And Related Compounds, Zhuangjie Li Dec 1985

Reactions Of Supercritical Water With Quinolone And Related Compounds, Zhuangjie Li

Masters Theses

One function which coal processing can perform is the removal of heteroatoms to yield a less polluting product. The removal of nitrogen atoms from the model compounds quinoline and aniline, which are believed to be representative of the nitrogen functional groups found in coal, was studied using supercritical water (SW) as the fluid. Water at these conditions serves as a reactant, helping to promote the rupture of the heterocyclic ring and in the removal of nitrogen attached to an aromatic ring. Heterocyclic ring rupture leads to the formation of several methylated products, methyl and dimethyl anilines, phenols and quinolines. The …

The Use Of Electrical Resistivity To Delineate A Brine Contamination Plume In The Walker Oilfield, Kent County, Michigan, Kent E. Meisel Dec 1985

The Use Of Electrical Resistivity To Delineate A Brine Contamination Plume In The Walker Oilfield, Kent County, Michigan, Kent E. Meisel

Masters Theses

Contamination of groundwater with oil field brines was reported in the Walker Oil Field, Michigan. An electrical resistivity survey utilizing the Vertical Electrical Sounding method was conducted to test the method as an exploratory tool for delineating brine contamination in glacial deposits. The method was successful in defining the subsurface geology and delineating a shallow, confined aquifer, but the presence of extensive, conductive clays effectively masked the presence of brine contamination. The method was shown to be an effective exploratory tool for shallow investigations.

Synthesis Of Pyridine Nucleosides By Cycloaddition Reactions And Synthesis And Condensation Reactions Of 4-Aryl-2-Oxytetronimides, Glenn L. Heise

Masters Theses

Experiment 1: The reaction of various glutaconaldehyde salts (Na+ or K+) with glycosyl isothiocyanates has resulted in the formation of a novel class of compounds. Relatively mild conditions were utilized for the synthesis which occurs in four steps, and in good yield, starting from glucpseptentaacetate. These reactions were found to be regiospecific. The unique physical and spectral properties of the model compound 1-(2,3,4,6-tetra-0-acetyl-β-D-glycopranosyl)-2-thiono-3-pyridine carboxaldehyde are also discussed.

Experiement 2: Early synthetic methodologies have recently been utilized in the synthesis of 4-aryl-2-oxytetronimides. These compounds have been found to participate in condensation reactions with various substituted o-phenylene diamines. A …

Lithofacies And Geochemistry Of Interreef Carbonates, Middle Silurian, Michigan Basin, Eric N. Porcher Dec 1985

Lithofacies And Geochemistry Of Interreef Carbonates, Middle Silurian, Michigan Basin, Eric N. Porcher

Masters Theses

The Niagara Group of the Michigan Basin is composed of reef, interreef, and basinal carbonates. The Niagara Group interreef has herein been divided into several litho facies: algal-laminated dolomicrite, bioturbated dolomicrite, intraclastic dolomicrite, wispy-laminated dolomicrite, crinoidal micrite, and nodular micrite. These interreef carbonates show a shallowing upward sequence.

The geochemistry of the Niagara Group interreef was examined in an attempt to delineate any geochemical gradients with respect to reefs. The geochemistry of the inter reef was determined by Particle Induced X-Ray Emission (PIXE) analysis. No significant geochemical gradients were found to be associated with reefs. Reasons for this may include: …

Cobalt (Iii) Complexes With (R) - 1, 2-Diaminopropane And Its Derivatives, Christopher John Rudy

Masters Theses

(R)-1, 2-Diethylaminopropane (N,N' -Etlpn) was prepared by LialH4 reduction of (R)-1-2-diacetamidopropane (m.p. 153.5°C). The [∝]D of N, N'-Melpn and N,N'-Etlpn was related to that of 1pn and was concentration dependent. (R)-1, 2-Dibenzylaminopropane was prepared. Complexes of trans, trans- and trans, cis-dinitrobis ((R)- 1, 2-diethylaminopropane) cobalt (III) were perpared. The hexadecadal rule was used to help assign the nitro oxygens of the complexes to sectors adjacent to the axial amine hydrogens and within the boundaries of the λ- chelate rings. The CD spectra was solvent dependent. The instability of trans-[Co (III)N4X2]+ complexes was related …

The Design And Construction Of Microprocessor-Computer Controlled Rapid Scanning Fiberoptic Spectrophotometer, Kathleen Marie Tobin Dec 1985

The Design And Construction Of Microprocessor-Computer Controlled Rapid Scanning Fiberoptic Spectrophotometer, Kathleen Marie Tobin

Masters Theses

Conventional spectrophometers require the transfer of a sample to a cuvette for obtaining spectra. The measurement of absorbance in situ can be accomplished using a fiber optic probe which can be placed directly in the sample. The fiber optic probe also minimizes environmental factors such as thermal or vibrational which may affect the absorbing species. A rapid scanning speed allows for essentially simultaneous wavelength monitoring.

The effect of coupling a rapid scanning spectrophotometer with a fiber optic probe provides for an extremely versatile system. When used in comjunction with a microprocessor or computer, this approach offers advantages such as data …

Subsurface Stratigrapy And Sedimentologic Control On The Productive Middle Devonian Age Richfield Member Of The Lucas Formation In The Michigan Basin, Sukru Nail Apak

Masters Theses

The depositional system of the Middle Devonian Richfield Member of Lucas Formation in the Michigan Basin was delineated using well logs, cores, drillers' records, and the literature. The Richfield Member was deposited in Sabkha and lagoonal environments characterized by cycles of anhydrite, dolomite, and limestone. Seven significant productive dolomitic zones, interbedded with anhydrite and limestone can be correlated throughout the study area. These zones change laterally to anhydrite towards the west flank and to dense limestone towards the east flank of the basin. Post-depositional diagenetic history of the Richfield was established with the aid of scanning electron microscopy and electron …

A Study Of Integral Equations For Computing Radial Distribution Functions, Zainuriah Hassan Aug 1985

A Study Of Integral Equations For Computing Radial Distribution Functions, Zainuriah Hassan

Masters Theses

Integral equation T (a two parameter equation of the Ornstein-Zernike form) is studied for computing the radial distribution functions of simple classical fluids interacting pairwise according to the Lennard-Jones 6-12 potential function. Numerical calculations are done on a computer for the system in the gas and liquid phases. At a high temperature, equation T results are found to agree very well with equation C when the parameters are chosen in a similar way. At a temperature slightly above the critical temperature, results from other sources over a wide density range. In equation T, by varying two of the parameters, the …

A Seismic Study Of An Impact Feature In Cass County, Michigan, Mancheol Suh Aug 1985

A Seismic Study Of An Impact Feature In Cass County, Michigan, Mancheol Suh

Masters Theses

A geophysical investigation, including a seismic study, of the subsurface structure of the Calvin-28 oil field, Cass County, Michigan, indicates that the structure's origin may be related to an impact event. The structural closures in the time structure maps and drilling results both show a central uplift. The fault system in the Trempealeau Formation shows a structure similar to other proven astroblemes. Undisturbed layers just beneath the central uplift also provide evidence of an impact structure. The result of mathematical modeling of the central uplift under the assumption that the structure is an impact structure corresponds well with the drilling …

The Survival Of Mesophilic And Thermophilic Bacteria Subjected To Uv Irradiation, Sajida A. Shaikh Aug 1985

The Survival Of Mesophilic And Thermophilic Bacteria Subjected To Uv Irradiation, Sajida A. Shaikh

Masters Theses

Survival curves were determined for the mesophile, Bacillus licheniformis and the thermophile, Bacillus stearothermophilus after subjecting the cells to ultraviolet irradiation. Cells were grown at 37°C for the mesophile and at 55°C for the thermophile.

At low UV exposure times, the thermophile was more resistant to UV irradiation (had a better survival rate) than was the case for the mesophile. At higher exposure times, the situation was reversed, the mesophile having a greater survival rate than the thermophile.

The effect of changes in the temperature during irradiation was also determined. Thermophiles were greatly affected by changes in temperature while the …

A Practical Application To Data Consistency Validation Using Finite State Automata, Michael Lee Richardson Aug 1985

A Practical Application To Data Consistency Validation Using Finite State Automata, Michael Lee Richardson

Masters Theses

The data which are input to a complex information system must often be verified for both syntactic and semantic consistency. The syntactic consistency can be enforced in a straightforward manner during the data entry process. The semantic inconsistencies can be more difficult to discover. A general approach, using finite state automata, is demonstrated here as applied to enforce consistency on client questionnaire responses in a large information system. This approach is developed using those software engineering standards are outlined and justified in this research. A discussion of semantic inconsistencies which require more sophisticated techniques is included.

A Gravity Investigation Of Mountain Flank Thrusting And Normal Faulting, Madison And Tobacco Root Ranges, Montana, Stephen Thomas Wigger Aug 1985

A Gravity Investigation Of Mountain Flank Thrusting And Normal Faulting, Madison And Tobacco Root Ranges, Montana, Stephen Thomas Wigger

Masters Theses

Gravity modeling of west-dipping, Laramide mountain flank thrusts which involve Archean metamorphic rocks in the western Tobacco Root and northern Madison Ranges supports the idea that these thrusts are gently dipping.

The thrusts provided a favorable location for normal faulting during Neogene extension. The Neogene faults on the eastern portions of the Madison and Jefferson Basins are interpreted to be listric, and merge with the Laramide thrusts. Basin development occurred along a series of such faults, which dropped hanging wall blocks of the thrust sheets to progressively greater depths. The maximum depth of the Madison basin, near Ennis, was found …

Construction And Testing Of A New Atomic Physics Beam Line At The Western Michigan University Accelerator Laboratory, William Andrew Hollerman Apr 1985

Construction And Testing Of A New Atomic Physics Beam Line At The Western Michigan University Accelerator Laboratory, William Andrew Hollerman

Masters Theses

A new beam line containing a differentially-pumped gas cell and charge state analyzing magnet was constructed for the purpose of measuring a wide variety of atomic inner-shell processes, such as excitation, ionization, and charge transfer. The completed system will be able to measure these individual atomic processes using coincidence techniques. Initial testing of the beam line was performed using 40MeV S+7+Ar collisions to determine the effect of the collimating slit size on the measured x-ray cross sections. These measurements showed that the slip size on the measured x-ray cross sections. These measurements showed that the slit size affects …

The Impeachment And Trial Of Secretary Of War William Worth Belknap, Duane Edward Holthof Apr 1985

The Impeachment And Trial Of Secretary Of War William Worth Belknap, Duane Edward Holthof

Masters Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to give an account of the events which lead to the resignation of Secretary of War William Worth Belknap in 1876, to examine the circumstances surrounding his impeachment, and to study the testimony in his Senate trial.

Although Belknap was not convicted on charges of accepting bribes, most of those senators who voted to acquit him did so on the technical ground that the Senate lacked the jurisdiction to try a private citizen. The evidence in the case clearly indicated Belknap's involvement, and there seems little doubt that if Belknap did not know what …

The Pauli Operator Correction In The Effective Λn Interaction, Jaleh Owliaei Apr 1985

The Pauli Operator Correction In The Effective Λn Interaction, Jaleh Owliaei

Masters Theses

Hypernuclear structure calculations performed for 6ΛLi, 7ΛLi, and 16Λ0 have reproduced the 1Λ=1 levels inferred from the recent (k, Π) reactions. However the 1Λ=0, groundstate of 16Λ0 is overbound by 6 MeV in these calculations, indicating a density dependence in the effective ΛN interaction in the interior of the heavier system. In this work corrections to the 16Λ0 effective interaction are introduced in terms of a Brueckner-Goldstone G-matrix with a modified Pauli operator. The G-matrix of 16Λ0 derived from that of 6ΛLi …

A 73.8 Mhz Radio Interferometer Telescope For Intense Celestial Sources, William Charles Millar

Masters Theses

A 73.8 MHz radio interferometer telescope was built, based on a published design. Although the design was proven, the telescope has thus far given no results on celestial sources. The electronics has been proven to be operational by testing them with hand-held dipole radio sources. Here, the electronics is evaluated with a discussion of possible reasons for the failure of the telescope in overall operation.

Reactivity Of Some Nitrogen-Containing Compounds At Supercritical Water Conditions, David M. Tiffany Apr 1985

Reactivity Of Some Nitrogen-Containing Compounds At Supercritical Water Conditions, David M. Tiffany

Masters Theses

The use of water at cuperctirical conditions to remove nitrogen from several nitrogen-containing compounds was studied with the purpose of exploring the use of supercritical water as a method of removing nitrogen from the extraction products of coal. Quinoline and isoquinolone were the primary model compounds used with benzonitrile and carbazole also being examined briefly. Reaction conditions varied in temperature (350-500°C), pressure (3500-5200 psi), and water density (0.170-.0.426g/cc). The major products formed by isoquinoline were benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and o-xylene as well as nonvolatile tar and char. Quinoline produced aniline and toluidine in addition to those obtained from isoquinoline. Most …

Uranium-Lead Zircon Ages And Crustal Contamination Of The Northeastern Idaho Batholith, James J. Dexter Dec 1984

Uranium-Lead Zircon Ages And Crustal Contamination Of The Northeastern Idaho Batholith, James J. Dexter

Masters Theses

The magmas which formed the northeastern Idaho batholith were contaminated with, or derived from, old crustal material as evidenced, from previous studies, by high whole-rock 87Sr/86Sr ratios, relatively high 207Pb/206Pb ages, and Archean to Proterozoic upper intercept ages for batholithic zircons.

The old zircon component has been identified in this study by separating zircons into fractions based on size and morphology. Pb/U isotopic ratios are distributed on a chord with a lower concordia intercept intrusive age of 73.6+6 m.y. Zircons from a batholithic sample located one kilometer inward from the contact were separated according …
