Simulation Of Coastal Inundation Instigated By Storm Surge And River Discharge In The Chesapeake Bay Using Sub-Grid Modeling Coupled With Lidar Data, J. D. Loftis, H. V. Wang

Presentations

Sub-grid modeling is a novel method by which water level elevations on the sub-grid level can be obtained through the combination of water levels and velocities efficiently calculated at the coarse computational grid, the discretized bathymetric depths, and local friction parameters without resorting to solve the full set of equations. Sub-grid technology essentially allows velocity to be determined rationally and efficiently at the sub-grid level. This salient feature enables coastal flooding to be addressed in a single cross-scale model from the ocean to the upstream river channel without overly refining the grid resolution. To this end, high-resolution DEMs will be …

Gis Data: City Of Virginia Beach, Virginia Tidal Marsh Inventory, Marcia Berman, Harry Berquist, Sharon A. Killeen, Carl Hershner, Karinna Nunez, Karen Reay, Tamia Rudnicky, Daniel E. Schatt

Data

The 2012 Tidal Marsh Inventory update for Virginia Beach, VA was generated using on-screen digitizing techniques in the most recent version of ArcGIS® - ArcMap while viewing conditions observed in the most recent imagery from the Virginia Base Mapping Program (VBMP). Dominant plant community types were primarily determined during field surveys from shallow-draft boats moving along the shoreline. Land-based surveys were performed in some locations. One shapefile is developed that portrays tidal marsh areas represented as polygons. A metadata file accompanies the shapefile to define attribute accuracy, data development, and any use restrictions that pertain to the data.

Two Decades Of Pelagic Ecology Of The Western Antarctic Peninsula, Deborah K. Steinberg, D G. Martinson, D P. Costa

VIMS Articles

Significant strides in our understanding of the marine pelagic ecosystem of the Western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) region have been made over the past two decades, resulting from research conducted aboard ARSV Laurence M. Gould and RVIB Nathaniel B. Palmer. These advances range from an understanding of the physical forcing on biology, to food web ecology (from microbes to top predators), to biogeochemical cycling, often in the larger context of rapid climate warming in the region. The proximity of the WAP to the Antarctic Circumpolar Current and WAP continental shelf bathymetry affects the hydrography and helps structure the biological community. Seasonal, …

Isotopic Characterization Of Aerosol Organic Carbon Components Over The Eastern United States, A. S. Wozniak, James E. Bauer, Rebecca M. Dickhut, Li Xu, Ann P. Mcnichol

VIMS Articles

Carbon isotopic signatures (delta C-13, Delta C-14) of aerosol particulate matter total organic carbon (TOC) and operationally defined organic carbon (OC) components were measured in samples from two background sites in the eastern U. S. TOC and water-soluble OC (WSOC) delta C-13 values (-27 to -24 parts per thousand) indicated predominantly terrestrial C-3 plant and fossil derived sources. Total solvent extracts (TSE) and their aliphatic, aromatic, and polar OC components were depleted in delta C-13 (-30 to -26 parts per thousand) relative to TOC and WSOC. Delta C-14 signatures of aerosol TOC and TSE (-476 to +25 parts per thousand) …

Distribution And Feeding Ecology Of Bathylagus Euryops (Teleostei: Microstomatidae) Along The Northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge From Iceland To The Azores, Christopher J. Sweetman Jan 2012

Distribution And Feeding Ecology Of Bathylagus Euryops (Teleostei: Microstomatidae) Along The Northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge From Iceland To The Azores, Christopher J. Sweetman

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge, from Iceland to the Azores (MAR), ranges in depth from 800 – 4500 m and extends over an area of 3.7 million km2. Recent evidence from MAR-ECO, a Census of Marine Life field project, reported increased abundance and biomass of deep-pelagic fishes below 1000 m on the MAR. Among the fishes sampled, Bathylagus euryops was found to be the biomass-dominant species and ranked third in total abundance. In this thesis, we characterize the distribution and feeding ecology of B. euryops as a function of physical, biological, and life history parameters along a mid-ocean ridge system. Multiple …

Chlorophyll A In Antarctic Sea Ice From Historical Ice Core Data, Km Meiners, M Vancoppenolle, S Thanassekos, Gs Dieckmann, Dn Thomas, .. .., Walker O. Smith Jr., Et Al

VIMS Articles

Sea ice core chlorophyll a data are used to describe the seasonal, regional and vertical distribution of algal biomass in Southern Ocean pack ice. The Antarctic Sea Ice Processes and Climate - Biology (ASPeCt - Bio) circumpolar dataset consists of 1300 ice cores collected during 32 cruises over a period of 25 years. The analyses show that integrated sea ice chlorophyll a peaks in early spring and late austral summer, which is consistent with theories on light and nutrient limitation. The results indicate that on a circum-Antarctic scale, surface, internal and bottom sea ice layers contribute equally to integrated biomass, …

Summary Tables: 2012 Prince William County, Virginia Shoreline Inventory, Marcia Berman, Harry Berquist, Sharon Killeen, Carl Hershner, Karinna Nunez, Karen Reay, Tamia Rudnicky

Reports

The Shoreline Inventory Summary Tables quantify observed conditions based on river systems, such as the combined length of linear features (e.g. shoreline miles surveyed, miles of bulkhead and revetment), the total number of point features (e.g. docks, boathouses, boat ramps) & total acres of polygon features (tidal marshes). This particular set of Summary Tables includes tidal marshes only as an amendment to the 2010 Prince William County Summary Tables. Dominant plant community types were primarily determined during 2012 field surveys from shallow-draft boats moving along the shoreline. Land-based surveys were performed in some locations.

Chaotic Escape From An Open Vase-Shaped Cavity. I. Numerical And Experimental Results, Jaison Novick, Matthew L. Keeler, Joshua Giefer, John B. Delos

Arts & Sciences Articles

We present part I in a two-part study of an open chaotic cavity shaped as a vase. The vase possesses an unstable periodic orbit in its neck. Trajectories passing through this orbit escape without return. For our analysis, we consider a family of trajectories launched from a point on the vase boundary. We imagine a vertical array of detectors past the unstable periodic orbit and, for each escaping trajectory, record the propagation time and the vertical detector position. We find that the escape time exhibits a complicated recursive structure. This recursive structure is explored in part I of our study. …

Chaotic Escape From An Open Vase-Shaped Cavity. Ii. Topological Theory, Jaison Allen Novick, John B. Delos

Arts & Sciences Articles

We present part II of a study of chaotic escape from an open two-dimensional vase-shaped cavity. A surface of section reveals that the chaotic dynamics is controlled by a homoclinic tangle, the union of stable and unstable manifolds attached to a hyperbolic fixed point. Furthermore, the surface of section rectifies escape-time graphs into sequences of escape segments; each sequence is called an epistrophe. Some of the escape segments (and therefore some of the epistrophes) are forced by the topology of the dynamics of the homoclinic tangle. These topologically forced structures can be predicted using the method called homotopic lobe dynamics …

Movements, Growth, And Mortality Of Chesapeake Bay Summer Flounder Based On Multiple Tagging Technologies, Mark J. Henderson Jan 2012

Movements, Growth, And Mortality Of Chesapeake Bay Summer Flounder Based On Multiple Tagging Technologies, Mark J. Henderson

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The research projects presented in this dissertation used multiple tagging technologies to examine the movements, growth, and mortality rates of summer flounder tagged and released in Chesapeake Bay. In the first two chapters, I used acoustic, archival, and conventional tags to examine the behavior of summer flounder on different spatial scales. Investigating the movement behavior of individuals on different scales is an important step towards understanding how large-scale distributions of a population are established. Based on the observed behaviors of summer flounder, I hypothesize that the movements of these fish are primarily related to foraging behavior while they are resident …

Developing An Unstructured Grid, Coupled Storm Surge, Wind Wave And Inundation Model For Super-Regional Applications, Yi-Cheng Teng Jan 2012

Developing An Unstructured Grid, Coupled Storm Surge, Wind Wave And Inundation Model For Super-Regional Applications, Yi-Cheng Teng

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

During extreme weather conditions such as hurricanes and nor'easters, both the currents and wind waves generated by the atmospheric forces are important. Although they may act and dominate on different temporal and spatial scales, their interactions and combined effects are without doubt significant. In this dissertation, a major effort has been made to couple an unstructured grid circulation model SELFE (semi-implicit, Eulerian-Lagrangian finite element model) and the WWM II (Wind Wave model II). Moreover, this new coupled model system can be executed in a parallel computational environment. After the coupled model was successfully built, the model was verified with ideal …

Patterns Of Population Structure And Historical Dispersal In Squaloid Sharks: A Species-Level Approach Using Molecular Markers, Ana Christina Pimenta Verissimo

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Squaloids (Order Squaliformes) are a highle diverse group of mostly deepwater habitats (> 200 m). Many species are regularly caught in commercial fisheries worldwide but their low productivity and correspondingly low intrinsic rebound potentials make them particularly vulnerable to population depletion and overexploitation. of special concern to fisheries management and conservation efforts are the spiny dogfish Squalus acanthias, the leafscale gulper shark Centrophorus squamosus and the Portuguese dogfish Centroscymnus coelolepis. These taxa have recently been declared overfished in several parts of each species' distribution but management efforts have been made to recover the "stocks" without a good understanding of the …
