Hampton Beachfront And Storm Protection Management Plan, Waterway Surveys & Engineering, Ltd., Virginia Institute Of Marine Science, Urs

Reports

Beach and water fronting property are a major asset to any community. These properties, whether public or private, are typically associated with the highest real estate values, as well as the greatest recreational or “quality of life” benefits. Living along the shoreline, however, offers its challenges in terms of susceptibility to damages and flooding resulting from coastal storms. Therefore, it is in the community‟s best interest from both an economic, as well as an aesthetic perspective, to preserve and maintain its beachfront assets through comprehensive management planning. The primary goal for beach management planning along the Hampton shoreline is to …

Managing Magnetic Resonance Imaging Machines: Support Tools For Scheduling And Planning, Adam P. Carpenter, Lawrence Leemis, Alan .S. Papir, David J. Phillips, Grace S. Phillips

Arts & Sciences Articles

We devise models and algorithms to estimate the impact of current and future patient demand for examinations on Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machines at a hospital radiology department. Our work helps improve scheduling decisions and supports MRI machine personnel and equipment planning decisions. Of particular novelty is our use of scheduling algorithms to compute the competing objectives of maximizing examination throughput and patient-magnet utilization. Using our algorithms retrospectively can help (1) assess prior scheduling decisions, (2) identify potential areas of efficiency improvement and (3) identify difficult examination types. Using a year of patient data and several years of MRI utilization …

Marine Corps Base, Quantico Shoreline Protection Plan, C. Scott Hardaway Jr. Mar 2011

Marine Corps Base, Quantico Shoreline Protection Plan, C. Scott Hardaway Jr.

Reports

One goal of this management plan is to provide more habitat-friendly management strategies which utilize the creation of marshes and beaches for shore protection rather than hardening the coast. Many of these strategies have been implemented around the Bay. These approaches include creating a marsh fringe by direct planting of the existing substrate, adding sand, and adding sand with stone sills. On more open coasts, breakwaters and beach fills can be built to achieve a stable sandy habitat of beaches and dunes. These “Living Shoreline” strategies can, if properly designed and constructed, provide shore protection as well as create a …

Estimating Relative Abundance Of Young-Of-Year American Eel, Anguilla Rostrata, In The Virginia Tributaries Of Chesapeake Bay (Spring 2010), Troy D. Tuckey, Mary C. Fabrizio

Reports

The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) adopted the Interstate Fishery Management Plan (FMP) for the American eel in November 1999. The FMP focuses on increasing coastal states’ efforts to collect American eel data through both fishery-dependent and fishery-independent studies. Consequently, member jurisdictions agreed to implement an annual survey for young-of-year (YOY) American eels. The survey is intended to “…characterize trends in annual recruitment of the YOY eels over time [to produce a] qualitative appraisal of the annual recruitment of American eel to the U.S. Atlantic Coast” (ASMFC 2000). The development of these surveys began in 2000 with full implementation …

Shoreline Evolution: City Of Hampton, Virginia Chesapeake Bay, Back River, And Hampton River Shorelines, Donna A. Milligan, Christine Wilcox, C. Scott Hardaway Jr., Mary C. Cox Feb 2011

Shoreline Evolution: City Of Hampton, Virginia Chesapeake Bay, Back River, And Hampton River Shorelines, Donna A. Milligan, Christine Wilcox, C. Scott Hardaway Jr., Mary C. Cox

Reports

The City of Hampton has about 95 miles of tidal shoreline along Chesapeake Bay, Hampton Roads, Back River, and Hampton River (Figure 1). Through time, the City’s shoreline has evolved, and determining the rates and patterns of shore change provides the basis to know how a particular coast has changed through time and how it might proceed in the future. Along Chesapeake Bay’s estuarine shores, winds, waves, tides and currents shape and modify coastlines by eroding, transporting and depositing sediments. The purpose of this report is to document how the shore zone of City of Hampton has evolved since 1937. …

Tetraethylammonium Tri-L-Phenolatobis [Tricarbonylmanganate(I)], Timothy J. Mcneese, Robert D. Pike

Arts & Sciences Articles

The title compound, (C8H20N)[Mn2(C6H5O)3(CO)6], was synthesized from [Mn(CO)3(CH3CN)3]BF4 and (C8H20N)(OC6H5). The binuclear anion exhibits a pseudo-threefold symmetry and contains two six-coordinate Mn atoms. Each metal atom is coordinated by three facially oriented CO ligands and three doubly-bridging phenolate ligands. The average O-Mn-O bond angle is 74.9 (7)° in the Mn2O3 metal-phenolate dimeric core, yielding a distorted octahedron for each metal.

Gis Data: Northampton County, Virginia Shoreline Inventory Report, Marcia Berman, Harry Berquist, Sharon Killeen, Carl Hershner, Karinna Nunez, Karen Reay, Tamia Rudnicky, Daniel E. Schatt

Data

The data inventory developed for the Shoreline Inventory is based on a three tiered shoreline assessment approach. In most cases this assessment characterizes conditions that can be observed from a small boat navigating along the shoreline. The three tiered shoreline assessment approach divides the shorezone into three regions:

1 ) the immediate riparian zone, evaluated for land use; 2 ) the bank, evaluated for height, stability, cover and natural protection; and 3 ) the shoreline, describing the presence of shoreline structures for shore protection and recreational purposes. Hand-held GPS units are used to log features observed in the field.

Charmed Hadron Spectrum And Interactions, Liuming Liu Jan 2011

Charmed Hadron Spectrum And Interactions, Liuming Liu

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Studying hadrons containing heavy quarks in lattice QCD is challenging mainly due to finite lattice spacing effects. to control the discretization errors, mQa is required to be much less than 1, where mQ is the quark mass and a is the lattice spacing. For currently accessible lattice spacings, the charm quark mass doesn't satisfy this requirement. One approach to simulate heavy quarks on the lattice is non-relativestic QCD, which treats heavy quark as a static source and expand the lattice quark action in powers of 1mQa . Unfortunately, the charm quark is not heavy enough to justify this expansion. An …

Multivariable Statistical Regression Models Of The Areal Extent Of Hypoxia Over The Texas-Louisiana Continental Shelf, David R. Forrest, Rochelle Hetland, Sf Dimarco Jan 2011

Multivariable Statistical Regression Models Of The Areal Extent Of Hypoxia Over The Texas-Louisiana Continental Shelf, David R. Forrest, Rochelle Hetland, Sf Dimarco

VIMS Articles

Observations of the areal extent of seasonal hypoxia over the Texas-Louisiana continental shelf from 1985 to 2010 are correlated with a variety of physical and biogeochemical forcing mechanisms. Significant correlation is found between hypoxic area and both nitrogen load (r(2) = 0.24) and east-west wind speed (r(2) = 0.16). There is also a significant increasing trend in the areal extent of hypoxia in time; a linearly increasing trend over the entire record (r(2) = 0.17), a step increase in area for the years 1994 and beyond (r(2) = 0.21), and a step increase for 1993 and beyond (r(2) = 0.29) …

Shirley Plantation Sediment Coring Study : Final Report, S. Kuehl, C. Hobbs Jan 2011

Shirley Plantation Sediment Coring Study : Final Report, S. Kuehl, C. Hobbs

Reports

The old wharf on the James River at Shirley Plantation is a site of historical and archaeological interest. According to sources at Shirley Plantation, there are numerous studies of colonial-age wharves associated with towns, but there are none of wharves that were constructed primarily to serve an individual plantation. The wharf at Shirley Plantation is such a structure. Shirley Plantation is working with marine archaeologists from East Carolina University to assess the archaeology of the pier. In order to enhance the understanding of the wharf, it would be beneficial both to better visualize the condition of the river bottom in …

The Impacts Of Shoreline Development On Shallow-Water Benthic Communities In The Patuxent River, Md, Cassie D. Bradley Jan 2011

The Impacts Of Shoreline Development On Shallow-Water Benthic Communities In The Patuxent River, Md, Cassie D. Bradley

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Natural coastal habitats throughout Chesapeake Bay are increasingly threatened with shoreline modification due to population growth and rising rates of development. The replacement of these natural coastlines with hardened structures such as seawalls (bulkheads) and stone revetments (riprap) not only compromises vegetation at the land-water interface, but also can influence several elements of local aquatic food webs. Effects of these alterations have been well-studied with respect to fish assemblages and intertidal communities, particularly in conjunction with larger-scale watershed development, and recently, interest has shifted toward investigation of the effects of shoreline development on subtidal benthic infaunal communities.
This study evaluated …

Characterization Of Pa-11 Flexible Liner Aging In The Laboratory And In Field Environments Throughout The World, Arthur Jaeton Mitman Glover Jan 2011

Characterization Of Pa-11 Flexible Liner Aging In The Laboratory And In Field Environments Throughout The World, Arthur Jaeton Mitman Glover

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Polyamide-11 (PA11) is a polymer of the Nylon family whose monomer is obtained from the castor bean, a renewable resource. It is widely used in offshore oil and gas production as a non-rigid flexible pipe liner, allowing for oil and gas transport from the wellhead to floating platforms for processing. The degradation of PA11 over time may lead to the pipe's failure, with possibly catastrophic results which include loss of life. Until now, the characterization of the degredative process has been limited to laboratory studies of the effects of water and temperature on the rate and degree of hydrolysis. In …

Gis Data: Northampton County, Virginia Tidal Marsh Inventory, Marcia Berman, Harry Berquist, Sharon Killeen, Carl Hershner, Karinna Nunez, Karen Reay, Tamia Rudnicky, Daniel E. Schatt

Data

The 2012 Tidal Marsh Inventory update for Northampton County, Virginia was generated using on-screen digitizing techniques in the most recent version of ArcGIS® - ArcMap while viewing conditions observed in the most recent imagery from the Virginia Base Mapping Program (VBMP). Dominant plant community types were primarily determined during field surveys from shallow-draft boats moving along the shoreline. Land-based surveys were performed in some locations. One shapefile is developed that portrays tidal marsh areas represented as polygons. A metadata file accompanies the shapefile to define attribute accuracy, data development, and any use restrictions that pertain to the data.
