Spot, Leiostomus xanthurus, were exposed to suspended sediments (&\approx&20 mg/L) contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in a laboratory flow-through system to evaluate the applicability of hepatic ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD) induction as an indicator of PAH exposure. PAH sources tested were coal-tar creosote (CTC), a low molecular weight fraction of creosote (LMWF), and a high molecular weight fraction of creosote (HMWF). A standard 96-h acute toxicity test was conducted to ensure that PAH concentrations tested in induction studies were sub-acutely toxic. The 96-h LC50 for spot was 1740 &\mu&g PAH/L (95% confidence interval = 1480-2060 &\mu&g PAH/L). The lowest concentration …

The first two chapters of this study examine faunal composition and latitudinal patterns in diversity of fishes in warm-temperate and tropical estuarine waters of the western Atlantic from La Plata River (35&\sp\circ&S), Argentina, to Chesapeake Bay (37&\sp\circ&N), USA (33 faunal reports). Species distributions generally corresponded with previously recognized marine zoogeographic regions, and cluster analyses also showed that faunal similarity among estuarine sampling sites was related to the type of sampling gear used and to the type of habitat that was sampled in each estuary. This research deals with one aspect of the scientific field of hydrogen in metals. The study of hydrogen in metals is technologically important for many reasons, among them is the use of hydrogen in metals to store energy. Hydrogen related energy technology is particularly attractive because hydrogen can be extracted from water, our most abundant resource, and can be used without any pollution. Metal hydrides may one day be widely used for automotive propulsion in cars, in batteries, and many other energy conversion devices. Total cross sections for charge transfer and electron detachment for collisions of a variety of negative ions with atomic hydrogen have been separately determined for laboratory collision energies ranging from about 5 eV to 500 eV. The experiments are performed with an apparatus that utilizes a crossed-beam configuration with a radio-frequency discharge as the source of atomic hydrogen.;For collisions of H{dollar}\sp-{dollar}(D{dollar}\sp-{dollar}) with H the charge transfer cross sections increase monotonically with decreasing energy and display an isotope effect. at the lowest collision energies, the electron detachment cross sections are about one order of magnitude smaller than those for charge transfer; …

Values for the normal isovector axial vector form factor g$\sb{\rm A}$(Q$\sp2$) are calculated from the leading order perturbative QCD hard scattering amplitude and some previously reported models for the nucleon distribution amplitude, some of which have been derived from QCD sum rules. The values obtained from each of the distribution amplitudes gives a result that is consistent with the data extrapolated to high momentum transfer. The axial vector form factor is around one and one half times the proton's magnetic form factor in all the models which is also in accord with the data. We also calculate the isoscalar axial …

White box program analysis has been applied to program testing for some time, but this analysis is primarily grounded in program syntax, while errors arise from incorrect program semantics. We introduce a semantically-based technique called error flow analysis, which is used to investigate the behavior of a program at the level of data state transitions. Error flow analysis is based on a model of program execution as a composition of functions that each map a prior data state into a subsequent data state. The goal of nuclear fusion research is to confine a deuterium-tritium plasma at a sufficiently high temperature (15 keV) and density (3 $\times$ 10$\sp{20}$ m$\sp{-3}$) for a sufficient length of time (1 sec) to produce net fusion power. One means to attain the required plasma confinement is to embed the plasma within a magnetic field. The global structure of this magnetic field determines the variation of magnetic field strength within the surfaces of constant plasma pressure. This field strength variation in turn determines many of the stability and confinement properties of the plasma. This dissertation gives the first detailed exposition …

Photodetachment Of Hydride Ion In Perpendicular Electric And Magnetic Fields, Aaron David Peters

A simple analytic formula for the photodetachment cross section of H$\sp{-}$ in perpendicular electric and magnetic fields is obtained. Oscillations in the spectrum are predicted by the formula, and these oscillations are correlated with closed classical orbits. We point out that the quantum mechanical derivation, using a stationary phase approximation, is in complete agreement with the three-dimensional semiclassical solution to the problem.

Baylor Grounds were defined by a survey of the natural oyster beds in Virginia conducted by Lt. J.B. Baylor, USN, and completed in 1894. The original purpose of the survey was to set aside naturally productive oyster beds for protection from private leasing, which was a controversial concept at the time. Hence the commonly used term 'Baylor Grounds' is synonymous with Virginia's public oystering grounds in the present day. Other surveys, conducted later, have added to the original Baylor acreage, resulting in an estimated 243, 000 acres of public oyster grounds in Virginia. This report describes and documents an analysis of the m1xmg and dilution· of the Chesapeake Corporation's process water discharge into the Pamunkey River at West Point, Virginia. The analysis involves the application of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science's three dimensional environmental fluid dynamics computer code, EFDC, to model the combined York, Pamunkey and Mattaponi Rivers. Following a large scale tidal calibration, the model's ability to predict the mixing of discharges into the river system is verified by the simulation of a field dye release study. The potential responses of wetland vegetation on the Mattaponi River to the proposed withdrawal of freshwater and the resulting alteration in salinity patterns were studied by comparing existing plant community distributions (which were surveyed in the summer of 1990) and historical vegetation distributions (which were evaluated through the use of aerial photography from 1953, 1971, and 1987) with estimated salinity patterns (developed from historical and adjusted freshwater inflows using a simulation model developed previously at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science). The explorers and naturalists who first visited Antarctica were struck by the large numbers of whales, seals and seabirds in such a harsh environment (summarized in Everson, 1977). Scientific expeditions in the twentieth century confirmed these observations, and also established that an even greater abundance of many different trophic levels occurred at the ice edge. Hart (1942) noted that phytoplankton were more abundant near the ice edge mad suggested that there was a distinct ice-edge flora, and Marr (1962) noted that krill (Euphausia superba) were concentrated at the interface between pack ice and open water. Three generations of the ancestral Susquehanna River system have been mapped beneath Chesapeake Bay and the southern Delmarva Peninsula. Closely spaced seismic reflection profiles in the bay and boreholes in the bay and on the southern Delmarva Peninsula allow detailed reconstruction of each paleochannel system. The channel systems were formed during glacial low sea-level stands, and each contains a channel-fill sequence that records the subsequent transgression. The trunk channels of each system are 2 to 4 km wide and are incised 30 to SO m into underlying strata; they have irregular longitudinal profiles and very low gradients within the Chesapeake …

The late Cenozoic deposits of southeastern Virginia represent a wide variety of depositional environments and record numerous marine transgressions. The formations range in age from Miocene to Holocene. This fieldguide provides an opportunity to visit and sample highly fossilferous marine bay and fluvial-estuarine sediments exposed in river bluffs and borrow pits on the York-James Peninsula.
