In this dissertation, we use lattice quantum chromodynamics to explore the radiative transitions of πK to K, to calculate the radiative width of the resonant K*(892) which appears in the P-wave πK → γK transition amplitude. The matrix elements are extracted from three-point functions calculated in a finite-volume discretized lattice with a pion mass of 284 MeV. The finite-volume amplitudes, which are constrained over a large number of πK energy points and four-momentum transfers, are mapped to the infinite volume transition amplitude by using the Lellouch-Lüscher formalism. The biological pump is a critical component of carbon transformation in aquatic ecosystems, but the role that zooplankton play in carbon production and vertical export is rarely studied in estuaries. Zooplankton produce carbon-rich fecal pellets which sink to depth and can fuel benthic community metabolism. The body size and taxonomic structure of the zooplankton community varies on interannual, seasonal, and diel time scales, and can lead to varying carbon production and export rates. Project activities addressed four priority elements in Virginia’s approved state wetlands plan. The existing monitoring and assessment strategy will be strengthened through incorporation of new data on the habitat function of existing and newly migrated marsh. Field surveys (information acquisition) will enhance existing understanding of marsh habitat function under sea level rise; and together with a water quality potential assessment, will support the refinement of an existing, EPA funded, marsh vulnerability analysis for conservation planning. Web-based tools for planners and managers (e.g., WetCAT) will be extended to incorporate information useful in planning wetland protection.

Artificial photosynthesis systems convert solar energy into chemical fuels such as hydrogen gas. Photocatalytic hydrogen generation systems have previously been developed, but reliance on expensive metal catalysts limits the viability of these systems. In order for artificial photosynthesis to be used as a large-scale clean energy solution, it is crucial to discover more active and cost-efficient catalysts.

To this end, several novel iron polypyridyl complexes were synthesized using relatively inexpensive reactants. Electrochemical testing revealed that these complexes are active electrocatalysts for the reduction of protons to generate hydrogen gas. We consider nonlocal Lorentz-violating theories, with infinite-derivative quadratic terms. The nonlocal modifications in the form of exponential damping in the propagator lead to a better convergence of amplitudes than in the local theories. Moreover, the nonlocal Lorentz-violating theories are ghost-free and unitary when formulated in Minkowski space. We compute the loop effects assuming one-parameter and two-parameter nonlocal functions. By comparing the lower bound of the nonlocality scale with the Planck scale, we rule out these theories. We then review a more general argument, developed by Collins et al. (2004), that a microscopic theory with Lorentz violation around the Planck scale …

The Ware River is a small coastal estuary draining into the Chesapeake Bay estuary. VIMS monitored the Ware watershed for rain events, runoff, and impacts to the estuary from April 1979 through July 1981. This entry contains the estuarine receiving water quality monitoring data files for the portion of the study known as Part 2 – Estuarine Receiving Water Quality. A set of stations on the tidal estuarine portion of the river were sampled by-monthly during high slack tide events. Polaritons have a demonstrated impact on nanophotonic applications in the midinfrared through visible spectral range. Surface phonon-polaritons (SPhPs) offer a way to bring the potential of polaritons to the longer infrared wavelengths. Strontium titanate (STO) is a perovskite polar dielectric with diverse technologically advantageous properties and it can support SPhPs in a uniquely broad spectral range of the far infrared. Despite these advantages, STO has mostly been overlooked as a nanophotonic material. Intermittently closed and open lakes and lagoons (ICOLLs) are coastal lakes that intermittently exchange water with the sea and experience saline intrusions. Understanding effects of seawater exchange on local biota is important to preserve ecosystem functioning and ecological integrity. Coastal dune lakes of northwest Florida are an understudied group of ICOLLs in close geographic proximity and with entrance regimes operating along a frequency continuum. We exploited this natural continuum and corresponding water chemistry gradient to determine effects of water chemistry on resident submersed aquatic vegetation (SAV) distributions in these ecosystems.
