Electron Detachment In Negative Ion-Molecule Collisions, Mohammed Saiful Huq
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Absolute total cross sections for electron detachment, reactive scattering, charge transfer and dissociative charge transfer have been measured for collisions of hydrogen and halogen negative ions with various molecular targets. The reactants investigated involve H('-), D('-), F('-), Cl('-), Br('-) and I('-) ions as projectiles and H(,2), D(,2), HD, N(,2), CO, O(,2), CO(,2), CH(,4) and Cl(,2) molecules as targets. The energy range of these experiments extended from about 1 eV to about 300 eV in the lab.;The threshold behavior of the detachment cross sections for the reactants H('-)(D('-)) + H(,2),D(,2) and HD has been determined. The thresholds for detachment for both …

Atlas Of High Resolution Infrared Spectra Of Carbon Dioxide: February 1984 Edition, D. Chris Benner
Arts & Sciences Articles
Long-path, low-pressure laboratory absorption spectra of carbon dioxide i are presented in an atlas format for the spectral regions 1830 to 2100 cm" , 2395 to 2680 cm-I i , and 3140 to 3235 cm- . The data were recorded at 0.01 cm"I resolution and room temperature with the Fourier transform spectrometer in the McMath solar telescope complex of the National Solar Observatory at Kitt Peak. A list of positions and assignments is given for the 3336 lines observed. A total of 52 bands of 12C1602, 13C1602, 12C160180, 12C160170, and 13C160180 have been identified.

Reports
A time series of monthly mean values of temperature measurements (1952-1981) for Gloucester Point, Virginia, U.S.A. and Vardo In Northern Norway are described and the results of an eigenfunction analysis are presented. Seasonal, year-to-year and long term changes of salinlty measurements (1960-1977) for Gloucester Point and monthly mean stream-flow values (1951-1982) are also described. Commerclal Catch data from Virginia for menhaden, bluefish and Atlantic croaker shows reasonable correlation with cllmatlc changes.
The time around 1965 was a cold period with high sallnlty and low streamflow. The same period was also cold In Northern Norway (Europe). Around 1974 was a period …

Ware River Intensive Watershed Study - Project Summary, Gary F. Anderson, Cindy Bosco, Bruce Neilson
Reports
The Ware River Intensive Watershed Study includes examinations of runoff from small catchments, instream transport of runoff, and their impacts on estuarine water quality. Runoff quantity and quality were monitored for row crop, residential and forested lands in the Ware basin for the period of October 1979 to July 1981. Loading rates have been calculated for both baseflow and stormflow contributions at each study site.
Electron Detachment For H-(D-) In Collisions With Ne, T. S. Wang, John B. Delos
Electron Detachment For H-(D-) In Collisions With Ne, T. S. Wang, John B. Delos
Arts & Sciences Articles
Total cross sections for electron detachment in collisions of H− and D− with Ne are calculated, using a model based on a first‐order solution to close‐coupled equations. Quantities needed for the calculation are the energy gap and the coupling between bound and free states. The energy gap is taken from previous calculations and the coupling is assumed to be of exponential form, with parameters adjusted to fit experimental data. Special examination is made of isotope effects in the cross sections.

York River Slack Water Data Report : Temperature, Salinity, Dissolved Oxygen, 1971 - 1980, T. J. Brooks
Reports
The slack water survey program, provides an extended series of temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and nutrient measurements along the York River. These have been used to:
1) calibrate, verify, and update mathematical models; 2) provide a baseline against which effects of unusual events have been measured; and could be used to: 3) establish annual and longer period "climatological" trends in response to changing natural phenomena and man-made modifications to the estuary; 4) provide a basis against which fluctuations in biota could be compared.

Highly Excited States Of A Hydrogen Atom In A Strong Magnetic Field, John B. Delos, Stephen Knudson, D. W. Knudson
Highly Excited States Of A Hydrogen Atom In A Strong Magnetic Field, John B. Delos, Stephen Knudson, D. W. Knudson
Arts & Sciences Articles
Classical trajectories and semiclassical energy eigenvalues are calculated for an atomic electron in a high Rydberg state in an external magnetic field. With the use of perturbation theory, a classical trajectory is described as a Kepler ellipse with orbital parameters evolving slowly with time. As they evolve, the ellipse rocks, tilts, and flips in space, but the length of its major axis remains approximately constant. Exact numerical calculations verify that perturbation theory is quite accurate for the cases considered (principal quantum number ≃ 30, magnetic field ≲ 6 T). Action variables are calculated from perturbation theory and from exact trajectories, …

Accumulation Of Toxic Organic Pollutants In The Blue Crab Callinectes Sapidus (Aromatic Hydrocarbons, Gas Chromatography, Polychlorinated Biphenyls, Virginia), Robert C. Hale
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Levels of toxic organic pollutants (TOP) were examined in the blue crabs, Callinectes sapidus, of Virginia waters. Alkyl substituted polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (ASPAH), thought derived from weathered petroleum, were the most common organic pollutants present. Unsubstituted aromatics, heterosubstituted aromatics, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), and DDT metabolites were also detected by the analytical procedure employed. Highest levels of ASPAH were found in crabs from the heavily industrialized Hampton Roads area of the James River. Lower concentrations were detected in crabs from the Pocomoke Sound, the upper James and the Rappahannock River sampling sites. PCB levels were elevated in samples taken from both …

Organic Toxic Substances Monitoring In Virginia, Robert Emile. Croonenberghs
Organic Toxic Substances Monitoring In Virginia, Robert Emile. Croonenberghs
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This project attempts to identify toxic organic substances used in Virginia, which cannot be detected by conventional analytical procedures. A list from the Virginia Bureau of Toxic Substances Information which contained substances reported as used in manufacture or produced in Virginia was cross-referenced with the Master File of toxic substances compiled pursuant to the Toxic Substances Control Act. Organic chemicals appearing on both lists were thus identified as toxic substances used in Virginia, and were the subjects of this research. Due to the reporting requirements of the Virginia Toxic Substances Information Act, the 113 "compounds" do not include substances used …

Interpretation Of Water Quality Data From The Nansemond And Chuckatuck Estuaries With Respect To Point And Nonpoint Sources Of Pollution : A Report To The Hampton Roads Water Quality Agency, Cindy L. Bosco, Bruce J. Neilson
Reports
.Recently the Nansemond and Chuckatuck basins have been designated as a Rural Clean Water Program demonstration area. This designation means that federal funds will be available to share the costs incurred by farmers when they implement the so-called Best Management Practices on their croplands, pastures, and feedlots. One requirement of the federal funding agency is that local governmental bodies monitor the quality of the waters in the area to document changes. One element in that monitoring effort is the study of conditions in the estuaries of these two water bodies. The Hampton Roads Water Quality Agency contracted with VIMS to …
