Improved Characterization Of Silicon-Silicon-Dioxide Interfaces, Pin Su Jan 1980

Improved Characterization Of Silicon-Silicon-Dioxide Interfaces, Pin Su

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Silicon is the heart of modern semiconductor devices. The dominance of Si in semiconductor technology depends on the superior quality and properties of thermally grown SiO(,2) compared with the oxide that can be placed on any other semiconductor. For this reason, Si-SiO(,2) interface has been an interesting and important research subject for many years.;The well established quasistatic and conductance methods used in the study of the Si-SiO(,2) interface are improved by using (i) an effectively thin composite insulator, (ii) low carrier concentration substrates, and most importantly (iii) low-level illumination at a wavelength that creates electron-hole pairs. Accurate measurements of both …

Resource Use By Amphipoda (Crustacea: Peracarida) On The Outer Continental Shelf Of The Middle Atlantic Bight: Implications To Community Structure, Linda C. Schaffner Jan 1980

Resource Use By Amphipoda (Crustacea: Peracarida) On The Outer Continental Shelf Of The Middle Atlantic Bight: Implications To Community Structure, Linda C. Schaffner

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Benthic communities on the outer continental shelf of the Middle Atlantic Bight are characterized by abundant populations of amphipods in the families Ampeliscidae and Corophiidae. Members of these families occupy tubes at or near the sediment surface and, thus, potentially compete with each other for spatial and trophic resources. This study examines the spatial, temporal and trophic resource use of six numerically dominant species in these families as a means of assessing the relative importance of competition as a structuring force in outer shelf benthic communities.

Analysis of abundance data and the use of discriminant analysis to relate abundance to …

Most Probable Magnetohydrostatic Equilibria For Tokamaks And Reversed Field Pinches, John Joseph Ambrosiano

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The determination of magnetohydrostatic equilibria usually requires that two of the equilibrium functions be given. as there is usually no a priori basis for specifying the form of these two functions, the functions and the equilibria they determine may be considered random.;In this dissertation, the author reviews a recent statistical method for determining the equilibrium of an axially symmetric cylindrical plasma which is most probable (in the maximum entropy sense) given four global constraints (i.e., energy, magnetic helicity, longitudinal magnetic flux, and longitudinal current flux). Previous results from this model have been limited to non-negative random equilibrium functions (B(,z), J(,z), …

Heavy Metal Inventory Of Suspended Sediment And Fluid Mud In Chesapeake Bay, Richard Harris, Maynard M. Nichols, Galen Thompson, John Banacki, George Vadas Jan 1980

Heavy Metal Inventory Of Suspended Sediment And Fluid Mud In Chesapeake Bay, Richard Harris, Maynard M. Nichols, Galen Thompson, John Banacki, George Vadas

Reports

Heavy metals have been found associated with suspended material, sediments and fluid mud in the Chesapeake Bay. A series of field observations were made along the Bay axis to determine the metal concentrations and their distributions at relatively high and at average river inflow between March 27-April 9 and May 2-10, 1979.

Metal concentrations in suspended material per unit volume of water relate to the concentrations of suspended material. They are higher in the zone of the turbidity maximum than landward in river water or seaward in estuarine water. Thus, metals associated with suspended material tend to accumulate in the …

Vims-Blm Second Order Wave Climate Model And Wave Climatology Of Baltimore Canyon Trough Shelf Area, Victor Goldsmith

Reports

The Wave Climate Model of the Baltimore Canyon Trough Shelf area encompassing the designated lease blocks was extended, refined, and comparisons made with real wave data, as part of this year's contract (Figures 15-la and 15-lb). This modified model w.as produced to refine the 1975 model so that more definitive statements and interpretations could be concluded, based on more detailed data, in the evaluation of the baseline data. A set of computer-generated graphics utilizing a greater depth data point density (0.25 NM), to al.low site-specific evaluation of conditions within the lease block area, were produced.

Acute Biological Effects Of Chemically Dispersed Oil Spillage : Final Report To The American Petroleum Institute, George C. Grant, Howard I. Kator, Paul L. Zubkoff Jun 1979

Acute Biological Effects Of Chemically Dispersed Oil Spillage : Final Report To The American Petroleum Institute, George C. Grant, Howard I. Kator, Paul L. Zubkoff

Reports

Primary productivity, heterotrophic potential, chlorophyll i! and phaeophytin, ATP, and direct bacterial counts were measured in the sea surface layer under controlled spills of La Rosa and Murban crude oils following immediate dispersal with the EXXON dispersant, Corexit 9527. Tests were conducted off New York on November 9, 1978.

The response of productivity to dispersed oil appeared as an initial increase in rates, a reduction to minimal rates 1-2 hours after dispersion, and a return to pre-spill rates after 3 hours. Comparison of productivity measurements from the two tests suggested a more efficient and rapid dispersion of the somewhat lighter …

Diabatic And Adiabatic Representations For Atomic Collision Processes, John B. Delos, W. R. Thorson Feb 1979

Diabatic And Adiabatic Representations For Atomic Collision Processes, John B. Delos, W. R. Thorson

Arts & Sciences Articles

ABSTRACT A consistent general definition of diabatic representations has not previously been given, even though many practical examples of such representations have been constructed for specific problems. Such a definition is provided in this paper. Beginning with a classical trajectory formulation, we describe the form and behavior of velocity‐dependent couplings in slow collisions, including the effects of electron‐translation factors (ETF’s). We compare the couplings arising from atomic representations and atomic ETF’s with those arising from molecular representations and ’’switching function’’ ETF’s. We show that a unique set of switching functions makes the two descriptions identical in their effects. We then …

Kepone® Residues In Chesapeake Bay Biota, M. E. Bender, R. J. Huggett, W. J. Hargis Jr.

VIMS Books and Book Chapters

Oysters from the James displayed variations in Kepone residue levels related to water temperature and their spawning cycle. Oyster depuralion rates were related to temperature. In summer the "biological half. life" of Kepone in oysters was about one week, while during the winter about 40 days were required for residue levels to decline by 50 per cent. Residues in blue crabs varied as a function of sex, males having considerably higher residues than females. Fin fish levels from the James varied greatly, with residue levels being dependent on species and length of residence for migratory fishes .. Average Kepone residues …

Reports

The Chesapeake Bay, one of the largest and most productive estuaries in the world, represents a vast natural, economic, and social resource for the citizens of the surrounding land area. The Bay is many things to many people. Much of the economic development of the entire region has been based upon the natural transportation network and the fisheries industry provided by the Bay and its tributaries. The Bay system also offers a wide variety of water-oriented recreational opportunities, a source of water for both residential and industrial users, and a site for the final disposal of many waste products. The …
