Oyster Spatfall On Shellstrings In Virginia Rivers: 1974 Annual Summary, Dexter S. Haven, Paul C. Kendall
Oyster Spatfall On Shellstrings In Virginia Rivers: 1974 Annual Summary, Dexter S. Haven, Paul C. Kendall
Reports
Oyster setting levels in m9st Virginia river systems are still far below those which commonly occurred prior to 1960. However, the 1974 season showed continuing improvement since 1972 when Tropical Storm Agnes raged through the Chesapeake Bay region, creating adverse environmental conditions which were largely responsible for the lowest setting levels on record. Data for 1973, as well as for 1971 and 1972 are included in this summary for comparison with the 1974 setting season. Setting information is obtained through surveys conducted weekly by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) from June through early October, with assistance of personnel …

Skylab Mss Vs. Photography For Estuarine Water Color Classification, Hayden H. Gordon, Maynard M. Nichols
Skylab Mss Vs. Photography For Estuarine Water Color Classification, Hayden H. Gordon, Maynard M. Nichols
Reports
On September 12, 1973 at 12:09 EST, the Skylab III satellite passed over the Chesapeake Bay and sensed energy containing information about a large section of the estuary. On the same day scientists from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science simultaneously gathered data in the Rappahannock River, a tributary of the Bay, to determine the physical characteristics of the surface water.

Reconnaissance Survey Of Benthic Communities Of A Potential Borrow Site Off Tangier Island, Virginia : Report To Virginia Airports Authority, Robert J. Orth, Donald F. Boesch
Reports
The Virginia Institute of Marine Science was called on to render advice and services to the Virginia Airports Authority concerning the environmental impact and design of an extension of the runway of the airport on Tangier Island, Virginia. The southern end of the present runway is now being threatened by the erosion due to the rapid retreat of the western shore of Tangier Island (Fig. 1). Extending the runway would require the stabilization of the shoreline in the vicinity of the runway and filling a tract of subaqueous bottom.
A Hydrographical And Water Quality Study During The Construction Of Second Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, Bruce J. Neilson, C. S. Fang
A Hydrographical And Water Quality Study During The Construction Of Second Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, Bruce J. Neilson, C. S. Fang
Reports
In 1972 studies were conducted to determine the environmental impact of a third crossing of Hampton Roads, a bridge-tunnel connection designated as part of Interstate Highway 664. At the same time, construction had begun for a second bridge and tunnel to parallel the existing Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel which was to be incorporated into the Interstate system as I-64. Because this project was only in the initial stages, it was recommended that an evaluation of I-64 be made in order to make recommendations for the design of and construction methods for the I-664 bridge-tunnel. This study deals with the water quality …

Chesapeake Bay Bibliography - Volume Iv. Virginia Waters, Sandra A. Gleason, Jane F. Stauble
Chesapeake Bay Bibliography - Volume Iv. Virginia Waters, Sandra A. Gleason, Jane F. Stauble
Reports
The Chesapeake Bay Bibliography was initiated by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science in response to growing resource management problems of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. With these problems came the realization that planning and management of such a great natural resource is an overwhelming task requiring the best available information. This bibliography, therefore, was undertaken to document existing sources of information, to help identify research and data gathering needs, and to develop a comprehensive research and information services programs for individuals interested in research on, and management of the natural resources of the Chesapeake Bay region.

A One-Dimensional Mathematical Model Of Tidal Hydraulics And Salt Intrusion In Estuarine Rivers, Fwu-Ding Lin
A One-Dimensional Mathematical Model Of Tidal Hydraulics And Salt Intrusion In Estuarine Rivers, Fwu-Ding Lin
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
A one-dimensional mathematical model has been developed as a practical way to analyze the tidal wave propagation and its interaction with freshwater runoff. The model approaches the problem both theoretically and numerically. To develop this model, the one-dimensional hydrodynamic and salt-balance equations are derived by integrating the three-dimensional equations over the cross section. These differential equations are approximated with implicit finite difference forms and the tidal heights, currents and salinity distributions are solved by using digital computer CDC 6400. The model has been applied to the James River in two different cases: the normal case and hurricane case. Because of …

A Study On The Classification Of The Sciaenoid Fishes Of China, With Description Of New Genera And Species, Yuanding Zhu, Lo Yun-Ling, Wu Han-Ling
Reports
This book was a thesis selected by "The Collective Papers of Science and Technology Research of Shanghai City, 1960". The article reviews the literature of past hundred years on sciaenid fishes, examines sciaenid specimens collected along our coastal areas, and contains a detailed description of the taxonomy of Chinese sciaenids. This book is for the use of the teachers and students of the biology departments in colleges and scientists of related specialties.
Semiclassical Calculation Of Regge Poles, John B. Delos, C. E. Carlson
Semiclassical Calculation Of Regge Poles, John B. Delos, C. E. Carlson
Arts & Sciences Articles
We have calculated the locations of the Regge poles for an actual interatomic potential by following the semiclassical formulation. For negative energies, this formulation is equivalent to the Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization condition. For positive energies there are three complex turning points; use of linear and parabolic connection formulas yields a semiclassical quantization condition for the poles. The poles are found to lie symmetrically along lines in the first and third quadrants of the angular-momentum plane. The locations of the poles at a given energy and the motion of these poles as the energy changes are presented. Remler has shown that Regge …

Eolian Sedimentation In Coastal Areas, Victor Goldsmith
Eolian Sedimentation In Coastal Areas, Victor Goldsmith
Reports
The importance of eolian deposition in coastal areas is clearly demonstrated by the size and bulk of coastal sand dunes in many of these areas. The dune fields of Coos Bay, Oregon (Fig. :1), the southern end of Lake Michigan (Fig. 2) and the Cape Cod dune fields southeast of Provincetown (Fig. 3) and on Sandy Neck (Fig. 4) are just a few outstanding examples. Smaller sand dune accumulations are a:1:1 integral part of almost all depositional coasts. More subtle form of eolian deposition on beaches, marshes, intertidal sand beaches, and in shallow bays and estuaries may not be as …

Hampton Bar Dredging Project, Newport News Shipbuilding And Dry Dock Co. Borrow Site, Monitor Of Turbidity And Sedimentation: Final Report, John D. Boon, Robert J. Byrne
Reports
This report summarizes field observations and sedimentological findings made by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science while monitoring a dredging project on Hampton Bar at Hampton, Virginia (Figure 1). Monitoring was conducted at the request of the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co. of Newport News, Virginia, for the purpose of assessing localized effects of the dredging operation on a real time basis so that operational decisions could be made to mitigate adverse · pacts or prevent their occurrence.
