Distribution, Growth, Selective Feeding, And Energy Transformations Of Young-Of-The-Year Blueback Herring, Alosa Aestivalis (Mitchill), In The James River, Virginia, Richard Greig Burbidge

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Energy transformations and budget are computers for young-of-the-year blueback herring, Alosa aestivalis, in the James River, Virginia. Distribution, growth, and selective feeding are described. Fish and zooplankton collections were made at five stations in the main channel of the James RIver from June through November 1969. Two 24hr series of samples were collected in July and October 1968 in the Potomac River. A direct relationship existed between standing cropos of zooplankton and distribution, growth, and feeding of blueback herring. Zooplankton densities were highest upstream, where food consumption and growth rates were correspondingly highest. A progressive downstream decrease and upstream increase …

Acute Toxicity Of Unbleached Kraft Mill Effluent (Ukme) To The Oppossum Shrimp, Neomysis Americana Smith, Fred Jacobs Jan 1972

Acute Toxicity Of Unbleached Kraft Mill Effluent (Ukme) To The Oppossum Shrimp, Neomysis Americana Smith, Fred Jacobs

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

96-hour TL50 values of unbleached kraft mill effluent (UKME) for Neornysis arnericana were found to range from concentrations of 3.29 to 6.85% at 26-28 C and 3.90 to 7.30% at 16-18 C. Differences between batches of effluent proved insignificant in experiments at each temperature regime. Furthermore, UKME did not lose its toxicity, when stored for 5 to 7 days at 4 C. A concentration of 20% effluent killed 100% of the organisms in 8 of the 12 bioassays. Slope functions and confidence limits of TL50 were calculated. This dissertation is from the Joint Program Degree from the College of William …

Chesapeake Bay Bibliography - Volume Ii Virginia Waters, Pamela S. Tennyson, Susan O. Barrick, Frank J. Wojcik, William J. Hargis Jr.

Reports

The Chesapeake Bay Bibliography was initiated by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science in response to growing resource management problems of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. With these problems carne the realization that planning and management of such a great natural resource is an overwhelming task requiring the best available information. This bibliography, therefore, was undertaken to document existing sources of information, to help identify research and data gathering needs, and to develop a comprehensive research and information services programs for individuals interested in research on, and management of the natural resources of the Chesapeake Bay region.

This, the …

Inner Shelf Sediments Off Chesapeake Bay. I - General Lithology And Composition, Maynard M. Nichols Jan 1972

Inner Shelf Sediments Off Chesapeake Bay. I - General Lithology And Composition, Maynard M. Nichols

Reports

The sedimentary materials and bottom topography of more than 2400 square miles of the inner continental shelf floor north off the Chesapeake Bay entrance have been surveyed for potential mineral resources. Sediments consist of two principal types: (1) fine sand and (2) medium to coarse sand. The fine sand is grey-colored, subrounded, rich in quartz and relatively 11clean 11 and well sorted. The medium-coarse sand is typically iron-stained, rich in shell and poorly sorted. The fine sand covers inner parts of the shelf floor whereas medium to coarse sand covers seaward parts. Additionally, shell-rich medium to coarse sand occurs on …

Storm-Wave And Storm-Surge Modification Of Virginia's Ocean Coast, Wyman Harrison Dec 1971

Storm-Wave And Storm-Surge Modification Of Virginia's Ocean Coast, Wyman Harrison

Reports

The purpose of this study was to begin work on a method for operational prediction of storm-induced beach changes. The thought was to use wind and storm-surge data that are predicted on a routine basis by the National Weather Service, NOAA, and it was felt that if such a procedure could be developed, it would be possible to provide estimates of beach erosion or deposition as part of routine weather forecasts whenever storms threatened. It was also hoped that it might be possible to make estimates of shoreline erosion during previous years by using historical storm data in the prediction …

Special Purpose Areas In Virginia's Coastal Zone, J. B. Pleasants Dec 1971

Special Purpose Areas In Virginia's Coastal Zone, J. B. Pleasants

Reports

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science is charged with the responsibility of advising state management agencies on matters relating to the environments and resources of the coastal zone of Virginia. Under this broad requirement, we have been specifically assigned the task of recommending an ocean-dumping policy for the Commonwealth. This paper, a survey of specially designated areas in coastal waters of the state, is designed to provide some of the background material required in the development of such a policy.

Studies Of The Potential Curve Crossing Problem I. Analysis Of Stueckelberg's Method, W. R. Thorson, John B. Delos, Seth A. Boorstein

Arts & Sciences Articles

A detailed critical analysis is made of Stueckelberg's treatment of inelastic transitions at a crossing of two potential curves. Using an asymptotic method analogous to the WKB approximation, Stueckelberg obtained the well-known Landau-Zener-Stueckelberg (LZS) formula for the inelastic transition probability. His method involved the determination of "connection formulas" linking amplitudes associated with his asymptotic approximants on either side of the crossing-point region. Here we show that (a) Stueckelberg's asymptotic approximants are just the WKB approximants for elastic scattering on the adiabatic (noncrossing) potential curves; (b) Stueckelberg's method for obtaining the connection formulas can be put on a rigorous footing, including …

Surface Observations, Ground Truth And Data : Nasa-Usgs Mission 144 : Chesapeake Bay Region, Sept. 22-30, 1970, Maynard M. Nichols

Reports

Surface observations of coastal waters and "ground. truth" data were obtained to aid interpretation and analyses of overflight photography and imagery. Among the broad objectives of the mission was to investigate the potential of high-altitude, multispectral photography as a tool for the improved planning necessary to cope with multidisciplinary problems within the coastal zone, specifically with regard to:

1. The inventory and evaluation of the central Atlantic coastal area natural resources;

2. The assessment of human and natural degradation of these resources;

3. The feasibility of monitoring resource allocation and management, including land use categories and the impact of urbanization …

Groundwater Flow In A Sandy Tidal Beach 1. One-Dimensional Finite Element Analysis, W. Harrison, C. S. Fang, S. N. Wang Jan 1971

Groundwater Flow In A Sandy Tidal Beach 1. One-Dimensional Finite Element Analysis, W. Harrison, C. S. Fang, S. N. Wang

VIMS Articles

A 31-day time series of observations of beach water table and tidal fluctuations was obtained from 13 wells along a profile perpendicular to the shoreline at Virginia Beach, Virginia. Finite element techniques were applied to solve the one-dimensional, unsteady state, nonlinear equation for groundwater movement. For the finite element analysis, the semi-infinite mass (unconfined aquifer) had to be replaced by a finite mass. The boundary conditions were found from the field data by directly solving the flow equation with a finite difference technique. The finite element method, using the variational principle, provided a reasonable solution and afforded economy in computer …

Vertical Distribution Of Estuarine Phytoplankton In The Surface Microlayer And At One Meter, And Fluctuations In Abundance Caused By Surface Adsorption Of Monomolecular Films, Victoria R. Gibson Jan 1971

Vertical Distribution Of Estuarine Phytoplankton In The Surface Microlayer And At One Meter, And Fluctuations In Abundance Caused By Surface Adsorption Of Monomolecular Films, Victoria R. Gibson

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

A quantitative comparison of the phytoplankton in the surface microlayer of an estuary and that a depth of one meter was made using a Garrett-type screen and a Frautschy bottle for sample collection. Results showed that the surface microlayer contained a significantly greater number of phytoplankton cells than the water at one meter. Species diversity at the surface tended to be somewhat lower than one meter, due to a greater number of individuals of the dominant species. Investigation revealed that the presence of a monomolecular film of slick material absorbed onto the water surface resulted in a decrease in the …
