Final Report On Results Of Operation James River; An Evaluation Of The Physical And Biological Effects Of The Proposed James River Navigation Project, William J. Hargis Jr. Jan 1966

Final Report On Results Of Operation James River; An Evaluation Of The Physical And Biological Effects Of The Proposed James River Navigation Project, William J. Hargis Jr.

Reports

A comprehensive study of the physical and biological characteristics of the James Estuary has been carried out by oceanographers of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science under contract with the Virginia Commission of Fisheries. This research project, under way for three years, has been directed especially to the effects of the proposed James River Navigation Project channel dredging on physical features--i·~.,the structure and dynamics, of the estuary, and indirectly on oyster production. Five separate phases were carried out under the project (called Operation James River). These involved: 1) accumulation and study of relevant literature and data, 2) research into the …

Ecology Of Marine Invertebrate Fouling Organisms In Hampton Roads, Virginia, Dale R. Calder Jan 1966

Ecology Of Marine Invertebrate Fouling Organisms In Hampton Roads, Virginia, Dale R. Calder

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Investigations were conducted from 15 May 1964 to 3 January 1966 to determine the incidence, distribution, and abundance of marine invertebrate fouling organisms in Hampton Roads, Virginia. Dredging carried out at seven stations revealed that benthic organisms most likely to be involved in fouling were Thuiaria argentea, Alcyonidium verrilli, Microciona prolifera, Amathia vidovici, and Aeverrillia armata. All of these species occur in the Pier 12 berthing area of the Norfolk Naval Base, with. !· argentea and~- verrilli being most abundant. Detailed studies of the organisms attaching to asbestos fiber test panels were made at Pier 12 of the Naval Base. …

Predictor Equations For Beach Processes And Responses, W. Harrison, N. A. Pore, D. R. Tuck Jr. Dec 1965

Predictor Equations For Beach Processes And Responses, W. Harrison, N. A. Pore, D. R. Tuck Jr.

VIMS Articles

A stepwise (linear) multiple regression procedure is applied to 11 environmental variables (or predictors) in the beach-ocean-atmosphersey stema t Virginia Beach, Virginia, for the following five predictands: mean longshore current velocity, mean bottom slope in the shoaling-wave zone, average mean grain size in the shoaling-wave zone, and beach deposition and beach erosion on the lower foreshore. Predictors consist of variables related to beach geometry, local water properties, local wind conditions, tidal fluctuations, and wave characteristics The resultant equations are tested against a set of independent data and, with one exception, agree reasonably. It is believed that if the data set …

Possible Late Pleistocene Uplift, Chesapeake Bay Entrance, W. Harrison, Rj Malloy, Ga Rusnak, J Terasmae

VIMS Articles

Paleontological and lithological studies of engineering borings and boring logs subaerial erosion surface of Pliocene (?)-Pleistocene age cuts across clastic sediments of pre-Yorktownian Miocene age in the subsurface and subbottom of the lower Chesapeake Bay area. When the bore-hole data are coupled with the results of subbottom echo profiling and piledriving records, it is possible to construct accurate cross sections of the buried Miocene-Pleistocene contact. The cross sections show "lows" in the erosion surface that may be correlated with the buried channels of the Pleistocene Elizabeth, James, York, and Susquehanna river valleys. Probable channel depths below mean low water at …

Catch And Value Of Various American Crustaceans 1929-1960, Willard A. Van Engel, Frank J. Wojcik Jan 1965

Catch And Value Of Various American Crustaceans 1929-1960, Willard A. Van Engel, Frank J. Wojcik

Reports

Occasional reference has been made to the relative magnitude of the catch of the blue crab in waters outside Chesapeake Bay, yet comparisons are not easily made unless data are readily available. Both parallel and opposite trends in catch have been observed. These could be reflections of the amount of fishing effort or the size of the crab stocks. Comparable records of other crustacean fisheries are often of interest. Compilations are given here of data on crabs, shrimp and lobsters originally published in "Fishery Industries of the United States" and "Fishery Statistics of the United States".

Bay Observations - Hydrography : Cruises Of November 27, 1961, And November 20, 1962, Maynard M. Nichols

Reports

This report presents data obtained on training cruises in the lower Chesapeake Bay. The purpose of these cruises was to study the physical and chemical characteristics of estuarine water in a section from the York River mouth to Cape Charles. In 1961 the observations were carried out aboard R/V Pathfinder; in 1962 measurements were made from the R/V Langley.
