What Motivates High School Students To Take Precautions Against The Spread Of Influenza? A Data Science Approach To Latent Modeling Of Compliance With Preventative Practice, William L. Romine, Tanvi Banerjee, William R. Folk, Lloyd H. Barrow

Kno.e.sis Publications

– This study focuses on a central question: What key behavioral factors influence high school students’ compliance with preventative measures against the transmission of influenza? We use multilevel logistic regression to equate logit measures for eight precautions to students’ latent compliance levels on a common scale. Using linear regression, we explore the efficacy of knowledge of influenza, affective perceptions about influenza and its prevention, prior illness, and gender in predicting compliance. Hand washing and respiratory etiquette are the easiest precautions for students, and hand sanitizer use and keeping the hands away from the face are the most difficult. Perceptions of …

Non-Traditional Students' Conceptual Scores And Network Centrality In Scale-Up Classrooms, Emily N. Sandt, Adrienne L. Traxler

Physics Faculty Publications

As classrooms transition from traditional to cooperative learning environments, questions about the details of these environments effectiveness are posed. Does this model equally benefit all students? How do nontraditional (NT) students' gains in conceptual knowledge compare to those of traditional (Trad) students in these classrooms? Do NT students' social differences (i.e. age, employment status, family life, etc.) affect the amount of learning they do in the course or their tendency to form collaborative ties with other students? In three sections of SCALE-UP introductory calculus-based physics, we collected social network survey data about student connections and used the Force Concept Inventory …

Fe doped GaN was studied by time- resolved photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The shape of PLtransients at different temperatures and excitation powers allowed discrimination between electron and hole capture to Fe3+ and Fe2+ centers, respectively. Analysis of the internal structure of Fe ions and intra-ion relaxation rates suggests that for high repetition rates of photoexciting laser pulses the electron and hole trapping takes place in the excited state rather than the ground state of Fe ions. Hence, the estimated electron and hole capture coefficients of 5.5 × 10−8 cm3/s and 1.8 × 10−8 cm3/s should be attributed to excited Fe3+ and …

Nondestructive Evaluation & Radar Imaging Using Terahertz Signals, D. Amal Mirando, Michael D. Higgins, Sonya Sokhey, Matthew Larson, Douglas T. Petkie

Symposium of Student Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities Materials

Nondestructive imaging is a method of examining a material without direct contact that additionally does not alter the properties of the material. The terahertz imaging system currently in development uses the principle of interferometry (a Michelson Interferometer) such that frequency modulated terahertz signals are split and directed to the object under study and a reference mirror; then the detector will acquire the intensity of the combined reflected signals that contains information about the objects in the path of the beam.

Symposium of Student Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities Materials

Cities are increasingly outfitted with sensors for monitoring various conditions such as traffic, weather, air quality, and infrastructure related issues. Such well outfitted cities are generating massive amounts of multi-modal data leading to daunting challenges in assimilating, visualizing, and making sense of this data by city authorities and citizens. We propose City360 to address these challenges and provide decision support to city authorities and citizens. We demonstrate the utility of our system through concrete use cases for San Francisco Bay area that utilize heterogeneous data from various open city data sources.

Finding Specific, Topic Related Information From A Sea Of Social Media Posts, Scott J. Duberstein, Daniel Asamoah, Derek Doran, Shu Z. Schiller

Symposium of Student Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities Materials

As social media continues to become an incredible mode of communication in daily life dealing with the exchange of information, these systems provide authors a platform where they can share their thoughts, feelings, and experiences about a number of topics. Harnessing the information expressed publicly through these modes can be incredibly powerful: public perceptions, signals, and data about a variety of specific topics could be extracted and studied from these posts. However, there is a common trade-off in collecting information about a topic from social media: the more specific the topic, generally, the more challenging it is to extract meaningful …

Symposium of Student Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities Materials

Military couples face significant challenges to their relationships including demanding schedules, multiple deployments, and frequent moves. Despite the high costs of chronic marital distress, very few military (or civilian) couples seek marriage therapy. The military services and the VA system have implemented collaborative care models in primary care where internal behavioral health consultants are integrated into primary care. Integrated primary care can reduce the stigma of behavioral health services and may increase the odds that couples would seek help earlier. There are no established couple interventions designed for use in primary care. The purpose of this presentation is to describe …

Ultrafast Saturation Of Electronic-Resonance-Enhanced Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering And Comparison For Pulse Durations In The Nanosecond To Femtosecond Regime, Anil K. Patnaik, Sukesh Roy, James R. Gord Feb 2016

Ultrafast Saturation Of Electronic-Resonance-Enhanced Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering And Comparison For Pulse Durations In The Nanosecond To Femtosecond Regime, Anil K. Patnaik, Sukesh Roy, James R. Gord

Physics Faculty Publications

The saturation threshold of a probe pulse in an ultrafast electronic-resonance-enhanced (ERE) coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS) configuration is calculated. We demonstrate that while the underdamping condition is a sufficient condition for saturation of ERE-CARS with the long-pulse excitations, a transient gain must be achieved to saturate the ERE-CARS signal for the ultrafast probe regime. We identify that the area under the probe pulse can be used as a definitive parameter to determine the criterion for a saturation threshold for ultrafast ERE-CARS. From a simplified analytical solution and a detailed numerical calculation based on density-matrix equations, the saturation threshold of …

A Performance Analysis Framework For Coreference Resolution Algorithms, Chandankumar Johakhim Patel Jan 2016

A Performance Analysis Framework For Coreference Resolution Algorithms, Chandankumar Johakhim Patel

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

This thesis entitled A Performance Analysis Framework for Coreference Resolution Algorithms, focuses on the topic of coreference resolution of semantic datasets. In order for Big Data analytics to be effective, it is essential to develop automated algorithms capable of integrating multiple datasets that contain data about a particular person or other entity. Accomplishing this necessitates coreference resolution; for example, determining that J. Doe in one dataset refers to the same person as Jonathan Doe Jr. in another dataset. There are many existing coreference resolution algorithms, but there are only a few basic design decisions to be made by such systems …

Enhanced Control Of Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex Neurophysiology With Real-Time Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (Rt-Fmri) Neurofeedback Training And Working Memory Practice, Matthew Sherwood, Jessica Kane, Michael Patrick Weisend, Jason G. Parker

Wright State Research Institute Publications

Real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging (rt-fMRI) neurofeedback can be used to train localized, conscious regulation of blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) signals. As a therapeutic technique, rt-fMRI neurofeedback reduces the symptoms of a variety of neurologic disorders. To date, few studies have investigated the use of self-regulation training using rt-fMRI neurofeedback to enhance cognitive performance. This work investigates the utility of rt-fMRI neurofeedback as a tool to enhance human cognition by training healthy individuals to consciously control activity in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). A cohort of 18 healthy participants in the experimental group underwent rt-fMRI neurofeedback from the left …

Openthinning: Fast 3d Thinning Based On Local Neighborhood Lookups, Tobias Post, Christina Gillmann, Thomas Wischgoll, Hans Hagen

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

3D Thinning is an often required image processing task in order to perform shape analysis in various applications. For researchers in these domains, a fast, flexible and easy to access implementation is required. Open source solutions, as the Insights Segmentation and Registration Toolkit (ITK), are often used for image processing and visualization tasks, due to their wide range of provided algorithms. Unfortunately, ITK’s thinning implementation is computational expensive and allows solely one specific thinning approach. Therefore, this work presents OpenThinning, an open source thinning solution for 3D image data. The implemented algorithm evaluates a moving local neighborhood to find deletable …

Cardiovascular Dieseases: From Data Generation To Analysis, Thomas Wischgoll

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death in Western societies. This presentation will provide insight into the use of expert knowledge and models to derive diagnostic tools that have the potential to aid in the diagnosis of diffuse cardiovascular diseases that tend to be more difficult to detect in CT angiograms. In order to develop these methods more basic research is needed to prove the validity of the approach, including validation of accuracy as well as approach itself. For that, specimens of porcine hearts were prepared and then analyzed followed by a statistical comparison between computed and optical measurements. …

Super-Resolution Reconstruction Of Mri, Sara Gharabaghi, Thomas Wischgoll, Nasser H. Kashou Jan 2016

Super-Resolution Reconstruction Of Mri, Sara Gharabaghi, Thomas Wischgoll, Nasser H. Kashou

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive technique that is used in clinical applications such as diseases diagnosis and monitoring and treatment progress. Although, MRI scans typically have high in-plane resolution but they have very poor resolution in slice direction. Furthermore, in some applications with limited acquisition time or where the subject is moving, increased slice thickness or inter-slice space (slice gaps) may be used which results in poor resolution MRI.

In this research, we propose a novel Super Resolution (SR) technique for reconstructing High-Resolution (HR) MRI using a sequence of orthogonal Low-Resolution (LR) MRI scans.

The resolution of this …

Biologists doing high-throughput high-content cellular analysis are generally not computer scientists or high performance computing (HPC) experts, and they want their workflow to support their science without having to be. We describe a new HPC enabled data analytics workflow with a web interface, HPC pipeline for analysis, and both traditional and new analytics tools to help them transition from a single workstation mode of operation to power HPC users. This allows the processing of multiple plates over a short period of time to ensure timely query and analysis to match potential countermeasures to individual responses.

A Semi-Automated Computer Program For Assessment Of Skeletal Maturity In Children, Sara Gharabaghi, Thomas Wischgoll Jan 2016

A Semi-Automated Computer Program For Assessment Of Skeletal Maturity In Children, Sara Gharabaghi, Thomas Wischgoll

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

In pediatric patients, skeletal maturity is an important tool for detection of hormonal, growth or genetic disorders. The Fels method is a well-known visual assessment method in which the skeletal age is estimated by grading 98 skeletal indicators in the hand-wrist radiographic (x-ray) image. These indicators are features that reflect the three-dimensional shape of the bones and change during the maturation process. Generally, the Fels indicators could be categorized into three main groups of the status of ossification, the ratios of bone widths, and epiphysealdiaphyseal fusion.
