Most applications of flat plate, low-temperature solar thermal panels are for water heating, such as producing domestic hot water or raising the temperature of swimming pools. This is reasonable given that the large masses of water present in these systems inherently provide built-in thermal energy storage so that a separate energy storage tank does not have to be purchased. For a space heating system, extra thermal energy storage generally has to be purchased and is a detriment to the economics of these systems. The social role of a participant in a social system is a label conceptualizing the circumstances under which she interacts within it. They may be used as a theoretical tool that explains why and how users participate in an online social system. Social role analysis also serves practical purposes, such as reducing the structure of complex systems to relationships among roles rather than alters, and enabling a comparison of social systems that emerge in similar contexts. Social media platforms facilitate the emergence of citizen communities that discuss real-world events. Their content reflects a variety of intent ranging from social good (e.g., volunteering to help) to commercial interest (e.g., criticizing product features). Hence, mining intent from social data can aid in filtering social media to support organizations, such as an emergency management unit for resource planning. Understanding multi-phase fluid flow and transport processes within aquifers, candidate reservoirs for CO2 sequestration, and petroleum reservoirs requires understanding a diverse set of geologic properties of the aquifer or reservoir, over a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. We focus on multiphase flow dynamics with wetting (e.g., water) and non-wetting (e.g., gas or oil) fluids, with one invading another.

Gallium liquid metal alloys (GaLMA) are one of the key components of emerging technologies in reconfigurable, flexible, and printable electronics. Surface properties of GaLMA play important roles in its application in reconfigurable devices, such as tunable radio frequency antennas and electronic swilches. Reversible flow of GaLMA in microchannels of these types of devices is hindered by the presence of an oxide skin that forms spontaneously in ambient environment. The oxide film sticks to most surfaces leaving unwanted residues behind that can cause undesired electronic properties. Clinical documents are vital resources for radiologists to have a better understanding of patient history. The use of clinical documents can complement the often brief reasons for exams that are provided by physicians in order to perform more informed diagnoses. ezDI uses large and extensive knowledge graph to enhance linguistics, NLP and ML techniques to improve structured data extraction from millions of EMR records. It then normalizes it, and maps it with various computer-processable nomenclature such as SNOMED-CT, RxNorm, ICD-9, ICD-10, CPT, and LOINC. Furthermore, it applies advanced reasoning that exploited domain-specific and hierarchical relationships among entities in the knowledge graph to make the data actionable. In this article, we draw on previous reports from physics, science education, and women's studies to propose a more nuanced treatment of gender in physics education research (PER). A growing body of PER examines gender differences in participation, performance, and attitudes toward physics. We have three critiques of this work: (1) it does not question whether the achievements of men are the most appropriate standard, (2) individual experiences and student identities are undervalued, and (3) the binary model of gender is not questioned. Euclidean embedding algorithms transform data defined in an arbitrary metric space to the Euclidean space, which is critical to many visualization techniques. At big-data scale, these algorithms need to be scalable to massive dataparallel infrastructures. Designing such scalable algorithms and understanding the factors affecting the algorithms are important research problems for visually analyzing big data. We propose a framework that extends the existing Euclidean embedding algorithms to scalable ones. Specifically, it decomposes an existing algorithm into naturally parallel components and non-parallelizable components. Student-to-student interactions are foundational to many active learning environments, but are most often studied using qualitative methods. Quantitative network analysis tools complement this picture, allowing researchers to describe the social interactions of whole classrooms as systems. Past results in introductory physics have suggested a sharp division in the formation of social structure between large lecture sections and small studio classroom environments. Extending those results, this study focuses on calculus-based introductory physics courses at a large public university with a heavily commuter and nontraditional student population. Recent developments in recommendation algorithms have focused on integrating Linked Open Data to augment traditional algorithms with background knowledge. These developments recognize that the integration of Linked Open Data may or better performance, particularly in cold start cases. In this paper, we explore if and how a specific type of Linked Open Data, namely hierarchical knowledge, may be utilized for recommendation systems. We propose a content-based recommendation approaches that adapts a spreading activation algorithm over the DBpedia category structure to identify entities of interest to the user. Given a graph G equipped with faithful and fixed-point-free Γ-action (Γ a finite group) we define an orbit minor H of G to be a minor of G for which the deletion and contraction sets are closed under the Γ-action. The orbit minor H inherits a Γ-symmetry from G, and when the contraction set is acyclic the action inherited by H remains faithful and fixed-point free. Description of the transitional process from a static to a dynamic frictional regime is a fundamental problem of modern physics. Previously, we developed a model based on the well-known Frenkel-Kontorova model to describe dry macroscopic friction. Here, this model has been modified to include the effect of dissipation in derived relations between the kinematic and dynamic parameters of a transition process. The main (somewhat counterintuitive) result is a demonstration that the rupture (i.e., detachment front) velocity of the slip pulse which arises during the transition does not depend on friction. Montgomery County, Ohio’s diabetes prevalence outpaces the nation, and the incidence of adult obesity approaches 1/3. Access to healthy food in the impoverished neighborhood surrounding Dayton’s Good Samaritan Hospital, the site of the Family Medicine residency, is important when educating about health lifestyle. The purpose of this project was to determine whether the area was a food desert and to evaluate the implications of the label.
