Trajectory data have been used in a variety of studies, including human behavior analysis, transportation management, and wildlife tracking. While each study area introduces a different perspective, they share the need to integrate positioning data with domain-specific information. Semantic annotations are necessary to improve discovery, reuse, and integration of trajectory data from different sources. Consequently, it would be beneficial if the common structure encountered in trajectory data could be annotated based on a shared vocabulary, abstracting from domain-specific aspects. Pathogen incidence rate prediction, which can be considered as time series modeling, is an important task for infectious disease incidence rate prediction and for public health. This paper investigates the application of a genetic computation technique, namely GEP, for pathogen incidence rate prediction. To overcome the shortcomings of traditional sliding windows in GEP-based time series modeling, the paper introduces the problem of mining effective sliding window, for discovering optimal sliding windows for building accurate prediction models. Linked Open Data (LOD) cloud has gained significant attention in the Semantic Web community recently. Currently it consists of approximately 295 interlinked datasets with over 50 billion triples including 500 million links, and continues to expand in size. Dataset publication on the Web has been greatly influenced by the Linked Open Data (LOD) project. Many interlinked datasets have become freely available on the Web creating a structured and distributed knowledge representation. Analysis and aligning of concepts and instances in these interconnected datasets have received a lot of attention in the recent past compared to properties. We identify three different categories of property pairs found in the alignment process and study their relative distribution among well known LOD datasets. Fuzzy extension of Description Logics (DLs) allows the formal representation and handling of fuzzy or vague knowledge. In this paper, we consider the problem of reasoning with fuzzy-EL+, which is a fuzzy extension of EL+. We first identify the challenges and present revised completion classification rules for fuzzy-EL+ that can be handled by MapReduce programs. We then propose an algorithm for scale reasoning with fuzzy-EL+ ontologies using MapReduce. Some preliminary experimental results are provided to show the scalability of our algorithm.

Sroiq Syntax Approximation By Using Nominal Schemas, Cong Wang, David Carral, Pascal Hitzler

Nominal schemas is a recently introduced extension of description logics which makes it possible to express rules which generalize DL-safe ones. A tractable description logic, ELROVn, has been identified. This leads us to the question: can we improve approximate reasoning results by employing nominal schemas? In this paper, we investigate how to approximately cast SROIQ into ELROVn. Using a datalog-based tractable algorithm, a preliminary evaluation shows that our approach can indeed do approximate SROIQ-reasoning with a high recall.

Extending description logics with so-called nominal schemas has been shown to be a major step towards integrating description logics with rules paradigms. However, establishing efficient algorithms for reasoning with nominal schemas has so far been a challenge. In this paper, we present an algorithm to reason with the description logic fragment ELROVn, a fragment that extends EL++ with nominal schemas. We also report on an implementation and experimental evaluation of the algorithm, which shows that our approach is indeed rather efficient.

This study investigates differences in problem-solving performance between three different introductory physics course formats at Florida International University. The course formats--lecture+laboratory (LL), inquiry-based (IQB), and lecture+laboratory+recitation (LLR)--all incorporated two Advanced Placement (AP) questions into their final exams. Students' written responses were evaluated via an AP scoring rubric, and during this scoring, we observed marked differences in solution behavior between the three course formats. To further investigate these differences, we used the framework of epistemic games to analyze student responses. To apply this framework to written work, an epistemic game rubric was created. We compare two distinct approaches for querying data in the context of the life sciences. The first approach utilizes conventional databases to store the data and provides intuitive form-based interfaces to facilitate querying of the data, commonly used by the life science researchers that we study. The second approach utilizes a large OWL ontology and the same datasets associated as RDF instances of the ontology. Modern society habitually uses online social media services to publicly share observations, thoughts, opinions, and beliefs at any time and from any location. These geotagged social media posts may provide aggregate insights into people's perceptions on a bad range of topics across a given geographical area beyond what is currently possible through services such as Yelp and Foursquare. This paper develops probabilistic language models to investigate whether collective, topic-based perceptions within a geographical area can be extracted from the content of geotagged Twitter posts. During recent crises, citizens (sensors) are increasingly using social media to share variety of information- situation on the ground, emerging needs, donation offers, damage, etc. In such an evolving ad-hoc community, how can we extract actionable nuggets from the social media streams to aid relief efforts? This demo presents a use case from the energy management domain. It builds upon previous work on approximate semantic matching of heterogeneous events and compares two semantic matching scenarios: exact and approximate. It illustrates how a large number of exact matching event subscriptions are needed to match heterogeneous power consumption events. It then demonstrates how a small number of approximate semantic matching subscriptions are needed but possibly with a lower true positives/negatives performance. The demo is delivered via the COLLIDER approximate event processing engine currently under development in DERI.

Cognitive performance and fatigue are well known to be inversely related. Continuous and sustained actions in operational environments typically lead to reduced sleep normally required to perform optimally. These operational environments subject the warfighter to intense physical and mental exertion. Because fatigue continues to be an occupational hazard, leading to cognitive defects in performance, there has been a recognized need for real-time detection technologies that minimize fatigue-induced mishaps.
