Interactions Of Vanadium Compounds With Reducing Equivalents: Evidence Of Free Radical Involvement And Possible Mechanisms Of Toxicity, Randal J. Keller May 1988

Interactions Of Vanadium Compounds With Reducing Equivalents: Evidence Of Free Radical Involvement And Possible Mechanisms Of Toxicity, Randal J. Keller

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Vanadium compounds have been reported to cause numerous toxicological effects including NAD(P)H oxidation and lipid peroxidation. The purpose of this thesis is to determine the active form of vanadium in causing these effects, and to determine any possible free radical involvement in these processes. Vanadium-stimulated oxidation of NADH was studied spectrophotometrically and by electron spin resonance spectroscopy. In 25 mM sodium phosphate buffer at pH 7. 4, vanadyl, (V(IV)), is slightly more effective in stimulating NADH oxidation than was vanadate (V(V)). Addition of a superoxide generating system, xanthine/xanthine oxidase, results in a marked increase in NADH oxidation by vanadyl, and …

1-Acyldihydropyridones As Synthetic Intermediates, Michael Andrew Foley May 1988

1-Acyldihydropyridones As Synthetic Intermediates, Michael Andrew Foley

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The most efficient and stereoselective total synthesis of (+/-)- lausbine II to date has been achieved. The key steps in this are the copper-mediated conjugate addition reaction of the Grignard reagent of 1-bromo-4-chlorobutane to a dihydropyridone and a stereoselective reduction of a quinolizidinone.

Methodology has been developed for the convenient synthesis of 1-acyl-2-substituted-1,2,5,6-tetrahydropyridines. This was accomplished by adding novel alkylzinc iodides to the 1-acyliminium ion derived from N-phenoxycarbonyl-4-methoxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyridine.

A Comparison Of Rank And Bootstrap Procedures For Completely Randomized Designs With Jittering, Feng-Ling Lee May 1987

A Comparison Of Rank And Bootstrap Procedures For Completely Randomized Designs With Jittering, Feng-Ling Lee

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This paper discusses results of a computer simulation to investigate the effect of jittering to simulate measurement error. In addition, the classical F ratio, the bootstrap F and the F for ranked data are compared. Empirical powers and p-values suggest the bootstrap is a good and robust procedure and the rank procedure seems to be too liberal when compared to the classical F ratio.

Petrology Of Pliocene (?) Basalts Of Curlew Valley (Box Elder Co.), Utah, Steven Brent Kerr May 1987

Petrology Of Pliocene (?) Basalts Of Curlew Valley (Box Elder Co.), Utah, Steven Brent Kerr

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Basalt outcrops in Curlew Valley consist of several flow remnants and eruptive centers situated along the valley margins. Basalt is also found in association with salic rocks that erupted in the central portion of the valley. The basalts are of probable Pliocene age and were erupted during a period of active extensional tectonics. Since their emplacement, the basalts have been extensively eroded and downfaulted. The present morphology reflects the erosional and depositional processes of prehistoric Lake Bonneville.

Twelve samples were analyzed chemically for major oxides, trace elements, and rare-earth elements. The basalts form a hypersthene normative series ranging from olivine …

Hydrogeology And Hydrochemistry Of Springs In Mantua Valley And Vicinity, North-Central Utah, Karen C. Rice May 1987

Hydrogeology And Hydrochemistry Of Springs In Mantua Valley And Vicinity, North-Central Utah, Karen C. Rice

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Chemical and tritium analyses of groundwater, precipitation and discharge records, fracture orientations, lineaments, and structural, stratigraphic, and topographic relationships have been used to describe the groundwater systems of Mantua Valley, north-central Utah. Groundwater flows through fractured Paleozoic quartzites and carbonate rocks and discharges from eleven perennial springs in Mantua Valley. Permeability in quartzites is the result of intense faulting and jointing. Groundwater in carbonate aquifers flows through fractures and/or fractures modified by solution and discharges as relatively large springs (up to 227 liters per second). Neogene normal faulting, rather than extensive karst processes, has produced valleys which are closed or …

Nonparametric Confidence Intervals For The Reliability Of Real Systems Calculated From Component Data, Jean Spooner May 1987

Nonparametric Confidence Intervals For The Reliability Of Real Systems Calculated From Component Data, Jean Spooner

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A methodology which calculates a point estimate and confidence intervals for system reliability directly from component failure data is proposed and evaluated. This is a nonparametric approach which does not require the component time to failures to follow a known reliability distribution.

The proposed methods have similar accuracy to the traditional parametric approaches, can be used when the distribution of component reliability is unknown or there is a limited amount of sample component data, are simpler to compute, and use less computer resources. Depuy et al. (1982) studied several parametric approaches to calculating confidence intervals on system reliability. The test …

Variational Principles Of Fluid Mechanics And Electromagnetism: Imposition And Neglect Of The Lin Constraint, Ross Roundy Allen Jr. May 1987

Variational Principles Of Fluid Mechanics And Electromagnetism: Imposition And Neglect Of The Lin Constraint, Ross Roundy Allen Jr.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Variational principles in classical fluid mechanics and electromagnetism have sprinkled the literature since the eighteenth century. Even so, no adequate variational principle in the Eulerian description of matter was had until 1968 when an Eulerian variational principle was introduced which reproduces Euler's equation of fluid dynamics. Although it successfully produces the appropriate equation of motion for a perfect fluid, the variational principle requires imposition of a constraint which was not fully understood at the time the variational principle was introduced. That constraint is the Lin constraint. The Lin constraint has subsequently been utilized by a number of authors who have …

Synthetic Studies Toward B-Alkylthiolanthionines, Hwa-Ok Kim May 1987

Synthetic Studies Toward B-Alkylthiolanthionines, Hwa-Ok Kim

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Synthetic routes toward a B-alkylthiolanthionine derivative, as found in the quinomycin depsipeptide antibiotics, have been studied through a sequence involving as the key intermediates and steps (a) (S) - Z-[(benzyloxycarbonyl)amino]-3,3-dimethoxy-l-propanol (2), prepared from N-benzyloxycarbonyl-L-serine in 3 or 4 steps, (b) N-benzyloxycarbonyl- 0 - tetrahydropyranyl-B,B-(ethylsulfinylethylthio)-alaninol (4a), converted from 2, and (c) attempted Lewis acid catalyzed replacement of alkylsulfinyl function by thiol moiety of cysteine, which gave undesired products. Stability of protecting groups used in this study, which are N,0-isopropylidenyl and tetrahydropyranyl functions in N-protected-L-serinol 20 or 26, under acidic conditions was found to play an important role in determining the optical …

A Test For Determining An Appropriate Model For Accelerated Life Data, Yuan-Who Chen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this thesis was to evaluate a method for testing the appropriateness of accelerated life model. This method is based upon a polynomial approximation. The parameters are estimated and used for testing the appropriateness of the model.

An example illustrates the polynomial method. Real data are applied for this method. Comparison with another method demonstrates that the polynomial method is much simpler and has comparable accuracy.

Least-Change Secant Updates Of Non-Square Matrices, Samih Kassem Bourji May 1987

Least-Change Secant Updates Of Non-Square Matrices, Samih Kassem Bourji

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In many problems involving the solution of a system of nonlinear equations, it is necessary to keep an approximation to the Jacobian matrix which is updated at each iteration. Computational experience indicates that the best updates are those that minimize some reasonable measure of the change to the current Jacobian approximation subject to the new approximation obeying a secant condition and perhaps some other approximation properties such as symmetry.

All of the updates obtained thus far deal with updating an approximation to an nxn Jacobian matrix. In this thesis we consider extending most of the popular updates to the non-square …

Diagenesis And Water Chemistry Of The Woodbine Group In The East Texas Basin, Helmuth Victor Wuerch May 1986

Diagenesis And Water Chemistry Of The Woodbine Group In The East Texas Basin, Helmuth Victor Wuerch

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Petrographic and SEM study of flu vial-deltaic sections of the Woodbine Group in the East Texas Basin indicates that authigenic mineral suites are controlled, in part, by the presence of organic-rich matrix.

During early, precompaction diagenesis, organic matter supplied the metabolic fuel required by sulfate-reducing bacteria to reduce sulfate in depositional waters ultimately to pyrite. With burial the sulfate supply was ultimately exhausted, and bicarbonate activity thereafter controlled the precipitation of siderite and Fe-calcite.

Matrix material supplied the components and reaction sites for the most import ant porosity-occluding reaction: kaolinite --> Fe,M g chlorite. Matrix physically inhibited the growth of …

Petrology Of The Late Proterozoic(?) - Early Cambrian Arumbera Sandstone And The Late Proterozoic Quandong Conglomerate, East-Central Amadeus Basin, Central Australia, Johnnie O. Phillips May 1986

Petrology Of The Late Proterozoic(?) - Early Cambrian Arumbera Sandstone And The Late Proterozoic Quandong Conglomerate, East-Central Amadeus Basin, Central Australia, Johnnie O. Phillips

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Throughout the James Ranges and Gardiner Range the Arumbera Sandstone forms prominent strike ridges with distinctive dark reddish slopes and pale red to orange-white cliffs. Because of their lithologic and stratigraphic similarities, the names Eninta and ''Quandong" for these units should be suppressed in favor of the name of Arumbera Sandstone, which has precedence. The stratigraphic and lithologic differences observed between the Quandong Conglomerate in the type locality and the Arumbera Sandstone in the study area suggest that these units are not equivalent. Similarites with the Areyonga Formation suggest the Quandong Conglomerate could be part of the Areyonga Formation.

Lithofacies …

Direct Simulation From A Model Specification Language, Richard Pimentel May 1986

Direct Simulation From A Model Specification Language, Richard Pimentel

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this thesis was to develop a program that would accept, as input, a finite set of algebraic equations and simple if-then conditional expressions that model a natural system, and then produce a continuous computer simulation with graphics and tabular output. The equations and conditionals can be in any order and key elements can be missing. The program can be used to run existing models or as a development tool to produce immediate prototypic computer simulations through synergistic man-machine interactions.

The theoretical aspects of automatic program generation were discussed, as well as the architectural design of the system. …

Sequential Thrusting Beneath The Willard Thrust Fault, Wasatch Mountains, Ogden, Utah, Tad William Schirmer May 1985

Sequential Thrusting Beneath The Willard Thrust Fault, Wasatch Mountains, Ogden, Utah, Tad William Schirmer

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The downstructure of viewing geologic maps, balanced and cross sections, and hanging-wall-sequence diagrams are applied to produce the first comprehensive synthesis of the structure below the willard thrust sheet.

Development of the duplex beneath the Willard thrust may be explained with a "piggyback" thrust model where younger thrust slices form below and fold an older, overlying thrust sheet. Progressive failure of the footwall ramp of the Willard thrust sheet extended the sole thrust eastward and produced a duplex consisting of thrust slices (horses) which adhered to the overriding thrust sheet where it ramped from a lower sole thrust to an …
