Polythiophenes are attractive candidate polymers for use in synthetic cell scaffolds as they are amenable to modification of functional groups as a means by which to increase biocompatibility. In the current study we analysed the physical properties and response of primary myoblasts to three thiophene polymers synthesized from either a basic bithiophene monomer or from one of two different thiophene monomers with alkoxy functional groups. In addition, the effect of the dopants pTS- and ClO4 - was investigated. In general, it was found that pTS- doped polymers were significantly smoother and tended to be more hydrophilic than their ClO 4 …

Magnetism And Magnetic Structures Of Prmn2ge2-Xsix, Jianli Wang, S J. Campbell, M Hofmann, S J. Kennedy, R Zeng, M Md Din, S X. Dou, A Arulraj, N Stusser

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The structural and magnetic properties of seven PrMn2Ge2-xSix compounds with Si concentrations in the range x = 0.0-2.0 have been investigated by x-ray diffraction, magnetic (5- 350 K), differential scanning calorimetry (300-500 K) and neutron diffraction (3-480 K) measurements. Replacement of Ge by Si leads to a contraction of the unit cell and significant modifications to the magnetic states-a crossover from ferromagnetism at room temperature for Ge-rich compounds to antiferromagnetism for Si-rich compounds. The compositional dependence of the room temperature lattice parameters exhibits non-linear behaviour around x = 1.2, reflecting the presence of magnetovolume effects. Re-entrant ferromagnetism has been observed …

Mechanical Properties Of Interpenetrating Polymer Network Hydrogels Based On Hybrid Ionically And Covalently Crosslinked Networks, Sina Naficy, Shota Kawakami, Sasha Sadeghovaad, Minato Wakisaka, Geoffrey M. Spinks

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Hydrogels are polymer networks swollen in water. Because of their soft and wet nature, and their ability to show large volume changes, hydrogels can be useful in many biomedical and actuator applications. In these applications, it is crucial to tune the mechanical and physical properties of a hydrogel in a controllable manner. Here, interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) made of a covalently crosslinked network and an ionically crosslinked network were produced to investigate the effective parameters that control the physical and mechanical properties of an IPN hydrogel. Covalently crosslinked polyacrylamide (PAAm) or poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) networks were produced in the presence …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

This paper reports on a facile synthesis method for reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) nanocomposites. The initial step involves the use of graphene oxide to disperse the MWNTs, with subsequent reduction of the resultant graphene oxide/MWNTs composites using l-ascorbic acid (LAA) as a mild reductant. Reduction by LAA preserves the interaction between the rGO sheets and MWNTs. The dispersion-containing rGO/MWNTs composites was characterized and electrophoretically deposited anodically onto glassy carbon electrodes to form high surface area films for capacitance testing. Pseudo capacitance peaks were observed in the rGO/MWNTs composite electrodes, resulting in superior performance with capacitance values up …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Transition metal oxide (Mn3O4, Fe2O3, Co3O4, and ZnO) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) composites were successfully synthesized via a hydrothermal method using the direct reaction between the corresponding metal powder and graphene oxide (GO). In this process, the GO can be reduced by transition metal powder in water, and the nanosized metal oxide can be obtained, and homogeneously mixed with and wrapped by RGO to form a metal oxide/RGO composite at the same time. X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning and transmission electron microscopy were used to characterize the as-prepared materials. The different experimental parameters, including reactants, …

Unidirectional Suppression Of Hydrogen Oxidation On Oxidized Platinum Clusters, Yu Li, Jun Xing, Zong Chen, Zhen Li, Feng Tian, Li Zheng, Hai Wang, P Hu, Huijun Zhao, Huagui Yang

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Solar-driven water splitting to produce hydrogen may be an ideal solution for global energy and environment issues. Among the various photocatalytic systems, platinum has been widely used to co-catalyse the reduction of protons in water for hydrogen evolution. However, the undesirable hydrogen oxidation reaction can also be readily catalysed by metallic platinum, which limits the solar energy conversion efficiency in artificial photosynthesis. Here we report that the unidirectional suppression of hydrogen oxidation in photocatalytic water splitting can be fulfilled by controlling the valence state of platinum; this platinum-based cocatalyst in a higher oxidation state can act as an efficient hydrogen …

Surface And Biomolecular Forces Of Conducting Polymers, Michael J. Higgins, Gordon G. Wallace Jan 2013

Surface And Biomolecular Forces Of Conducting Polymers, Michael J. Higgins, Gordon G. Wallace

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

In this review, we provide insight into the surface forces of conducting polymers, a class of intelligent materials that offer unique strategies for controlling biomolecular interactions in wide-ranging biomedical applications. Critical to the success of these applications is that the polymer interface is exposed to biological fluids whose interactions are controlled through the polymer surface chemistry and electrochemical switching of the surface properties. There is, however, little known about the intermolecular and surface forces that govern these interactions. Therefore, the purpose of this review is to more closely examine the forces that mediate interactions with biological entities, including forces such …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The temperature and magnetic field dependences of the magnetization and critical current density of Fe1.04Te0.6Se0.4 single crystals have been investigated, and the flux pinning mechanism has been analysed. The normalized pinning force (fp Fp/F p,max) vs. h(H/Hirr) curves, are scaled using the Dew-Hughes theory, f(h) ≈ hp(1 - h)q with p 1.35 and q 3.06. The angular dependence of the resistivity under different magnetic fields shows a dip-like structure, below the superconducting transition temperature. The anisotropic value of 2 was obtained using Ginzburg-Landau theory.

Microscopic Role Of Carbon On Mgb2 Wire For Critical Current Density Comparable To Nbti, Jung Ho Kim, Sangjun Oh, Yoon-Uk Heo, Satoshi Hata, Hiroaki Kumakura, Akiyoshi Matsumoto, Masatoshi Mitsuhara, Seyong Choi, Yusuke Shimada, Minoru Maeda, Judith Macmanus-Driscoll, S X. Dou

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Increasing dissipation-free supercurrent has been the primary issue for practical application of superconducting wires. For magnesium diboride, MgB2, carbon is known to be the most effective dopant to enhance high-field properties. However, the critical role of carbon remains elusive, and also low-field critical current density has not been improved. Here, we have undertaken malic acid doping of MgB2 and find that the microscopic origin for the enhancement of high-field properties is due to boron vacancies and associated stacking faults, as observed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy. The carbon from the malic acid almost uniformly encapsulates …

Efficiency Of A Compact Elliptical Planar Ultra-Wideband Antenna Based On Conductive Polymers, Thomas Kaufmann, Akhilesh Verma, Van-Tan Truong, Bo Weng, Roderick Shepherd, Christopher Fumeaux

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

A planar antenna for ultra-wideband (UWB) applications covering the 3.1–10.6 GHz range has been designed as a test bed for efficiency measurements of antennas manufactured using polymer conductors. Two types of conductive polymers, PEDOT and PPy (polypyrrole), with very different thicknesses and conductivities have been selected as conductors for the radiating elements. A comparison between measured radiation patterns of the conductive polymers and a copper reference antenna allows to estimate the conductor losses of the two types of conductive polymers. For a 158 μm thick PPy polymer, an efficiency of almost 80% can be observed over the whole UWB spectrum. …

Strain Modulated Transient Photostriction In La And Nb Codoped Multiferroic Bifeo3 Thin Films, Zuanming Jin, Yue Xu, Zhengbing Zhang, Xian Lin, Guohong Ma, Zhenxiang Cheng, Xiaolin Wang

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The coherent longitudinal acoustic (LA) phonons in La and Nb codoped polycrystalline BiFeO3 (Bi0.8La0.2Fe 0.99Nb0.01O3 (BLFNO)) films are photo-induced and detected by the ultrafast reflectance spectroscopy. The generation mechanism of LA phonons is strongly connected with the ferroelectric polarization and is attributed to the transient photostriction effect, which is a combination of the optical rectification effect and the electrostriction effect. The strain modulation of sound velocity and out-of-plane elastic properties are demonstrated in BLFNO film on SrTiO3, which gives the insight on the dynamical coupling between electrical polarization and lattice deformation. Our findings are desired for the design of BiFeO3-based …

Enhanced Hydrogen Storage Properties Of Naalh4 Co-Catalysed With Niobium Fluoride And Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes, Jianfeng Mao, Zaiping Guo, Hua-Kun Liu

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The effects of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) as a co-catalyst with NbF5 on the dehydrogenation and hydrogenation kinetics of NaAlH4 were investigated by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential thermal analysis, temperature-programmed desorption, and isothermal hydrogen ab/desorption techniques. It has been revealed that there is a synergistic effect of SWCNTs and NbF5 on the de/rehydrogenation of NaAlH4, which improves the hydrogen de/absorption performance when compared to adding either SWCNTs or NbF5 alone. For example, the apparent activation energy for the first-step and the second-step dehydrogenation of the co-doped NaAlH4 sample is estimated to be 85.9 …

Large Scale Synthesis Of V-Shaped Rutile Twinned Nanorods, Weigang Lu, Britain Bruner, Gilberto Casillas, Jibao He, Miguel Jose-Yacaman, Patrick J. Farmer

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

V-shaped rutile twinned nanorods (VRTNs) with different aspect ratios were synthesized on large scale using a one-pot organic solvothermal method. Although several different types of VRTNs were produced, (101) twinned nanorods were the major product with minor amounts of (301) twins and straight nanorods. STEM, TEM and XRD characterizations show that [001] is the growth direction of VRTNs, with surfaces dominated by {110} facets. Intermediate formation of both brookite and anatase nanorods provides dual pathways to VRTNs’ growth: one path in which anatase seeds trigger and promote brookite nanorod growth; and a second path in which anatase nanorods are formed …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The shear piezoelectric behavior of [001] poled tetragonal and [011] poled rhombohedral Pb(In1/2Nb1/2)O3-Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 (PIN-PMN-PT) crystals, with "1T" and "2R" domain configurations, respectively, were investigated under uniaxial stress perpendicular to polar direction. The shear piezoelectric coefficient d15 was found to decrease with increasing compressive stress for both "1T" and "2R" crystals. Based on thermodynamic analysis, the phase structure can be stabilized by applying compressive stress perpendicular to polar direction, resulting in a "harder" polarization rotation process, accounts for the reduced shear piezoelectric coefficient. Of particular importance is that the allowable drive electric field was greatly increased and transverse dielectric loss was …

Magnetostrictive Properties Of Directional Solidification Fe82ga9al9 Alloy, Y Zhou, X L. Wang, B W. Wang, Y Du, Y Liu, L Q. Liu

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

"Fe82Ga9Al9 alloy rod was prepared by the directional solidification (DS) method. The effects of uniaxial compressive stress on magnetostriction of the alloy and the temperature dependence of magnetostriction were investigated. The results show that the magnetostriction increases from 135 x 10(-6) at 2.3 MPa to 221 x 10(-6) at 53 MPa and then remains at this value between 53 MPa and 90 MPa. This enhancement results from domain rotation under the compressive stress. Technical Aspects Of Cold High Pressure Densification (Chpd) On Long Lengths Of In Situ Mgb2 Wires With Enhanced Jc Values, R Flukiger, M S A Hossain, M Kulich, C Senatore

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The technical aspects correlated with the observed enhancement of mass density and critical current density in the filaments of in situ MgB2 wires by means of the recently developed Cold High Pressure Densification (CHPD) are reviewed. The present analysis first summarizes the results obtained by means of a short sample prototype device with anvil lengths of 39 mm. Pressures well above 1 GPa were applied to short wires, causing Jc enhancements between a factor 1.5 and 2.3 at 4.2 K and 8 T. At 20 K, the enhancement is much stronger and reaches a factor 3 for binary and 5 …
