Transdermal Drug Delivery: Microfabrication Insights, Ciprian Iliescu, Bangtao Chen, Jiashen Wei, Zhilian Yue

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The paper presented an enhancement solution for transdermal drug delivery using microneedles array with biodegradable tips. The microneedles array was fabricated by using deep reactive ion etching (DRIE) and the biodegradable tips were made to be porous by electrochemical etching process. The porous silicon microneedle tips can greatly enhance the transdermal drug delivery in a minimum invasion, painless, and convenient manner, at the same time; they are breakable and biodegradable. Basically, the main problem of the silicon microneedles consists of broken microneedles tips during the insertion. The solution proposed is to fabricate the microneedle tip from a biodegradable material - …

Generation Of Terahertz Radiation By Bulk And Surface Optical Rectification From Crystal Planes Of Arbitrary Orientation, Stuart Hargreaves, Krunal Radhanpura, Roger A. Lewis

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The theory of second-order nonlinear bulk and third-order nonlinear surface electric-field-induced optical rectification is developed for zinc-blende 4¯3m crystal faces of arbitrary indices (hkl). The theory is then used to account for our experimental results for terahertz generation from GaAs high-index planes (11N)A and (11N)B, where N=2, 3, 4, and 5. The data combined with the calculations allow us to demonstrate that a surface field is present on both the Ga-rich and As-rich faces and to determine that the signs are opposite and that the strengths are similar. Such conclusions are inaccessible by work restricted to low-index planes.

The Generation Of Terahertz Frequency Radiation By Optical Rectification, Krunal Radhanpura, Stuart Hargreaves, Roger A. Lewis Jan 2009

The Generation Of Terahertz Frequency Radiation By Optical Rectification, Krunal Radhanpura, Stuart Hargreaves, Roger A. Lewis

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

One of the means of generating terahertz (THz, 1012 Hz) frequency radiation is through the bulk second-order nonlinear effect of optical rectification. Optical rectification occurs if high-intensity light is directed onto an electrooptic material such as ZnTe. If the excitation beam contains components of two or more frequencies then difference-frequency mixing, also known as optical rectification, may take place. Depending on the spectrum of the excitation beam, the resulting frequency may be in the THz range. While this phenomenon has been known for some time, and has been studied in various zinc blende crystals, attention does not seem to …

Studies Of The Electroresistive Properties Of Electronic Oxides, Jonathan Knott, Roger A. Lewis Jan 2009

Studies Of The Electroresistive Properties Of Electronic Oxides, Jonathan Knott, Roger A. Lewis

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

In this paper we report on the non-linear voltage-current relationship of three doped lanthanum manganite compounds (La0.8Li0.2MnO3, La0.66Sr0.33MnO3 and La0.8Pb0.2MnO3) and three manganite cobaltite compounds (DyMn0.5Co0.5O3, HoMn0.5Co0.5O3 and NdMn0.5Co0.5O3). We compare and contrast the magnitude and temperature dependence of the non-linear behaviour, and suggest this behaviour may be largely due to phase separation in the compounds. We also compare the behaviour of single-crystal and polycrystalline bulk samples of lead-doped lanthanum manganite (La0.8Pb0.2MnO3), which provide evidence for grain boundaries playing an important role in the non-linear voltage-current relationships in certain compounds.

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Using a recently developed broadband microwave measurement technique, we have studied the hysteretic appearance and disappearance with in-plane magnetic field of the uniform ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) mode of a patterned permalloy disk array. The observed features are consistent with our micromagnetic simulations (performed on an infinite array of such disk), which predict that on decreasing the magnetic field from a positively magnetized state at positive fields the array will: (i) pass continuously into a double-vortex state; (ii) followed by a discontinuous transition to a single-vortex state; and finally (iii) discontinuously into a negatively magnetized state at some negative field. The …

Fabrication And Superconducting Properties Of Highly Dense Mgb2 Bulk Using A Two-Step Sintering Method, Minoru Maeda, Yue Zhao, Yoshifumi Watanabe, Hiroaki Matsuoka, Y Kubota

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

We investigated on microstructure and superconducting properties of high-density MgB2superconductors synthesized by a heat-treatment method combining a short period of sintering at 1100°C with a following annealing at a low temperature. The two-step sintering method was found to achieve a coexistence of a high density and broadened XRD full width at half maximum (FWHM) of MgB2 peak in the samples. The onset of diamagnetism at 5 T was approximately 2 K higher than those of the samples heat-treated by single-step sintering at high or low temperatures. Different second-step annealing temperatures were examined in this work. …

The crystal structure and the electronic and thermal properties of a high-quality polycrystalline TbFeAsO0.85 sample made by a high-pressure technique are investigated. The crystal structure, as determined by synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction, possesses a tetragonal unit cell (space group: P4/nmm) with lattice parameters of a=b=3.8851 Å and c =8.3630 Å. In order to elucidate the electronic structure and oxidation states of corresponding elements, X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectra are presented. The XANES spectra confirm that the oxidation states of Fe, As, and Tb in the TbFeAsO0.85 sample are ~Fe2+, …

A Superconducting Transistorlike Device Having Good Input-Output Isolation, Ivan Nevirkovets

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

A multiterminal superconducting device with the S1IS2FIS3 structure (where S, I, and F denote a superconductor, an insulator, and a ferromagnetic material) is fabricated and characterized. Introducing a thin ferromagnetic layer into the middle electrode dramatically reduces parasitic back action of the acceptor junction (S1IS2) bias current on the injector junction (S2FIS3)current-voltage characteristic as compared with that for the formerly reported quiteron, a device exploiting similar operation principle.

Ybco Films With Zr4+ Doping Grown By Mod Method, Min Liu, Hongli Suo, Shuai Ye, Dongqi Shi, Yue Zhao, Lin Ma, Meiling Zhou

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

YBa2Cu3O7-delta (YBCO) films with Zr doping have been prepared successfully by the trifluoroacetate metal-organic deposition (TFA-MOD) method through dissolving Zr acetylacetonate into the precursor solution. Yttria-stabilized zirconia(YSZ)nanoparticles were detected in the doped YBCO films by XRD. From the analysis of XRD omega and phi scans, the doped films have better out-of-plane and in-plane textures than those of the un-doped YBCO film. Although the doped YBCO films have lower T-c than that of the un-doped YBCO film, a very significant enhancement of normalized J(c) is displayed as compared to the undoped film at applied fields, indicating that an effective pinning force …

Ultrafast Interactions In Condensed Matter As Source Of Terahertz-Frequency Electromagnetic Radiation, Stuart Hargreaves, Roger A. Lewis

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Terahertz (THz, 1012 Hz) frequency radiation has long proven to be elusive relative to microwaves at lower frequenc ies and infrared radiation at higher frequencies. We have investigated several solid-state materials as candidate terahertz-frequency emitters under excitation by ultra-short (12 fs) pulses of near-infrared radiation, and present the results here with a comparison between different emission mechanisms.

The Emission Of Visible Radiation By Peeling Adhesive Tape, Evan Constable, Yunfei Hu, J. Horvat, Roger A. Lewis Jan 2009

The Emission Of Visible Radiation By Peeling Adhesive Tape, Evan Constable, Yunfei Hu, J. Horvat, Roger A. Lewis

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

We have observed the emission of visible radiation on peeling adhesive tape from a spool. We have found that there is a fluctuation of light intensity in phase with the rotation of the spool from which the tape is being unwound. We have further found that the amount of light emitted initially increases as the unwinding speed is increased, then decreases at higher speeds.

Molecules With Multiple Personalities: How Switchable Materials Could Revolutionise Chemical Sensing, Fernando Benito-Lopez, R Byrne, Yizhen Wu, Lorrain Nolan, Jung Ho Kim, King Tong Lau, Gordon G. Wallace, Dermot Diamond

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Worldwide, the demand for sensing devices that can conform with the requirements of large-scale wireless sensor network (WSN) deployments is rising exponentially. Typically, sensors should be very low cost, low power (essentially self-sustaining), yet very rugged and reliable. At present, functioning WSN deployments involve physical transducers only, such as thermistors, accelerometers, photodetectors, flow meters, to monitor quantities like temperature, movement, light level and liquid level/flow. Remote, widely distributed monitoring of molecular targets remains relatively unexplored, except in the case of targets that can be detected directly using 'non-contact' techniques like spectroscopy. This paper will address the issues inhibiting the close …

Epithelial To Mesenchymal Transition And Breast Cancer, Eva Tomaskovic-Crook, Erik W. Thompson, Jean Paul Thiery Jan 2009

Epithelial To Mesenchymal Transition And Breast Cancer, Eva Tomaskovic-Crook, Erik W. Thompson, Jean Paul Thiery

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Epithelial-mesenchymal plasticity in breast carcinoma encompasses the phenotypic spectrum whereby epithelial carcinoma cells within a primary tumor acquire mesenchymal features and re-epithelialize to form a cohesive secondary mass at a metastatic site. Such plasticity has implications in progression of breast carcinoma to metastasis, and will likely influence response to therapy. The transcriptional and epigenetic regulation of molecular and cellular processes that underlie breast cancer and result in characteristic changes in cell behavior can be monitored using an increasing array of marker proteins. Amongst these markers exists the potential for emergent prognostic, predictive and therapeutic targeting.

Reduction Of Superconducting Transition Temperature And Flux Pinning In Al And C Codoped Mgb2 With Insight From First-Principles Calculations, Aihua Li, Xiaolin Wang, S X. Dou, Qiwen Yao, Zhenxiang Cheng, Saeid Soltanian, J M. Yoo, P Munroe

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

We report for the first time the Al and C codoping effect on the structures and superconductivity in MgB2. It was found that both the lattice parameters and the Tc decreased monotonically with increasing doping level of both Al and C. The Tc dropped to 27.5 and 7 K for x=0.2 and for x =0.4, respectively. The reduction of Tc for the codoping was found to be quicker than for individual Al doping and slower than for individual C doping at the same doping levels. First-principles calculations indicated that the observed decrease in Tc …

Antiferromagnetic Transition In Eufe2as2: A Possible Parent Compound For Superconductors, Zhi Ren, Zengwei Zhu, Shuai Jiang, Xiangfan Xu, Qian Tao, Cao Wang, Chunmu Feng, Guanghan Cao, Zhu An Xu

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Ternary iron arsenide EuFe2 As2 with ThCr2 Si2 -type structure has been studied by magnetic susceptibility, resistivity, thermopower, Hall, and specific-heat measurements. The compound undergoes two magnetic phase transitions at about 200 and 20 K, respectively. The former was found to be accompanied with a slight drop in magnetic susceptibility (after subtracting the Curie-Weiss paramagnetic contribution), a rapid decrease in resistivity, a large jump in thermopower, and a sharp peak in specific heat with decreasing temperature, all of which point to a spin-density-wave-like antiferromagnetic transition. The latter was proposed to be associated with an A -type antiferromagnetic ordering of Eu2+ …

Gel Sensors And Actuators, Paul Calvert Jan 2008

Gel Sensors And Actuators, Paul Calvert

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Gels, soft polymeric or composite materials that have a high fraction of water, are often found as structural materials and actuators in nature but have so far not found many uses when fabricated synthetically. We first examine some natural systems such as jellyfish, sea anemones, starfish, legumes, and human tissue, all having interesting ways of moving or otherwise reacting to the surrounding environment. Then we discuss swelling and cross-linking of hydrogels, followed by a look at actuation by electrically, thermally, and chemically stimulated gels, noting that electrical stimulation needs a chemical intermediary to show substantial actuation (comparable to human muscle, …

Influence Of Inductance Variation On Performance Of A Permanent Magnet Claw Pole Soft Magnetic Composite Motor, Youguang Guo, Jian Zhu, Zhi Lin, Haiyan Lu, Xiaolin Wang, Jiaxin Chen

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Winding inductance is an important parameter in determining the performance of electrical machines, particularly those with large inductance variation. This paper investigates the influence of winding inductance variation on the performance of a three-phase three-stack claw pole permanent magnet motor with soft magnetic composite (SMC) stator by using an improved phase variable model. The winding inductances of the machine are computed by using a modified incremental energy method, based on three-dimensional nonlinear time-stepping magnetic field finite element analyses. The inductance computation and performance simulation are verified by the experimental results of an SMC claw pole motor prototype.

Enhancement Of Ferroelectricity And Ferromagnetism In Rare Earth Element Doped Bifeo3, Zhenxiang Cheng, Xiaolin Wang, S X. Dou, Hideo Kimura, Kiyoshi Ozawa

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Rare earth element doped BiFeO3 thin films were fabricated using the pulsed laser deposition method and various targets made from different starting Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 iron source materials. The films fabricated using the targets made from Fe3O4 exhibit great enhancement in their ferroelectricity, due to greatly reduced electrical leakage, as well as enhanced magnetization compared to those films deposited using targets from Fe2O3. It is suggested that the Fe2+ ion plays an important role in compensating for the charge imbalance and reducing current leakage, as …

Magnetic Anisotropy Of Naxcoo2 Single Crystals, Dapeng Chen, Xiaolin Wang, C T Lin, S X. Dou

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

We report the magnetic properties of single crystals of NaxCoO2 (x=0.42, 0.82, and 0.87). The magnetic susceptibility measurements revealed considerable anisotropy along H parallel to ab and H parallel to c for the as-grown single crystals. It was found that an antiferromagnetic transition with a Neel temperature T-N=21 K occurred for the x=0.82 sample, and there was a paramagnetic phase for the x=0.87 sample over a wide temperature range from 2 to 300 K, but the sample with x=0.42 shows a monotonic increase of chi with increasing temperature above similar to 100 K. In addition, …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Bi1-xLaxFeO3 ceramics with x=0, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 have been synthesized by solid state reaction, starting from metal oxides. A series of structure transformations is found to depend upon the doping level. Below 10% La doping, Bi1-xLaxFeO3 maintains the rhombohedral structure of BiFeO3. However, for Bi0.8La0.2FeO3 and Bi0.7La0.3FeO3, the structures change to the orthorhombic and tetragonal, respectively. La doping significantly reduces electric leakage and leads to successful observation of electrical polarization hysteresis loops. Doping with La also …

Correlation Between Doping Induced Disorder And Superconducting Properties In Carbohydrate Doped Mgb2, Jung Ho Kim, S X. Dou, Sangjun Oh, M Jercinovic, E Babic, T Nakane, Hiroaki Kumakura

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

A comprehensive study of the effects of carbohydrate doping on the superconductivity of MgB2 has been conducted. In accordance with the dual reaction model, more carbon substitution is achieved at lower sintering temperature. As the sintering temperature is lowered, lattice disorder is increased. Disorder is an important factor determining the transition temperature for the samples studied in this work, as evidenced from the correlations among the lattice strain, the resistivity, and the transition temperature. It is further shown that the increased critical current density in the high field region can be understood by a recently-proposed percolation model [M. Eisterer …
