Correlation gas chromatography (c-GC) is a special application of the gas chromatography technique and is used for the evaluation of both vaporization enthalpy and vapor pressures of organic compounds. Its use in measuring vaporization enthalpies has been extensively documented. This method is useful for measurements of both liquids and solids. For substances that are solids, since each analyte is dilutely adsorbed on the condensed phase of the gas chromatographic column, it is not crystalline. Nanoporous gold (NPG) has immense technological applications owing to a plethora of properties like large surface area to volume ratio, plasmonic properties, stable gold-thiolate bond formation and a wide range of pore sizes. The surface morphology of nanoporous gold has been altered previously by dealloying and thermal annealing to increase/decrease the pore size and change the surface area. In this project, inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS) was used to measure the phonon dispersion in chromium at high pressure and low temperature, and an ab initio method was used to simulate the phonon dispersion with different lattice constants and magnetic orders. The IXS measurements were carried out in Sector 30 at the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory. Data were taken at room temperature with pressures of 1.29 GPa, 8.15 GPa, 10.6 GPa, and at 5 K with a pressure of 18.36 GPa. Wilson disease protein (WLNP) is a P1b-type ATPase crucial for maintaining copper homeostasis in humans. Mutations in this protein result in the autosomal recessive disorder Wilson disease, a condition characterized by copper accumulation in the liver and brain. WLNP provides copper for incorporation into cuproproteins and exports excess copper into the bile for excretion. There are six metal-binding domains (MBDs) in WLNP, found within the first 650 amino acids of this 1,465 amino acid protein. Professionalization offers rewards such as prestige, financial benefits and autonomy. Fields such as nursing and social work have undergone the professionalization process. This exploratory study examined faculty attitudes regarding the professionalization of web development as defined by the Hall model of professionalism. The purpose of the study was to understand how faculty view web development as a profession. Based on the Hall’s Professionalism Scale (1968) and modified survey by Snizek (1972), the Web Development Professionalism Inventory (WDPI) was used to explore faculty attitudes toward professionalization.

An integral part of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) are Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs), which consist of vehicles with on-board units (OBUs) and fixed road-side units (RSUs). Wireless Access in Vehicular Environment (WAVE) offers QoS via service differentiation by using application defined priorities. However, WAVE has unbounded delay and is oblivious to network load and severity of vehicles with respect to their environment. Our context severity metric innovatively enhances WAVE to be sensitive to vehicle and environment interactions. The hypotheses in many multiple testing problems often have some inherent structure based on prior information such as Gene Ontology in gene expression data. However, few false discovery rate (FDR) controlling procedures take advantage of this inherent structure. In this dissertation, we develop FDR controlling methods which exploit the structural information of the hypotheses.

This dissertation focuses on the deformation of a viscous drop and a vesicle immersed in a (leaky) dielectric fluid under an electric field. A number of mathematical tools, both analytical and numerical, are developed for these investigations. The dissertation is divided into three parts. First, a large-deformation model is developed to capture the equilibrium deformation of a viscous spheroidal drop covered with non-diffusing insoluble surfactant under a uniform direct current (DC) electric field. The large- deformation model predicts the dependence of equilibrium spheroidal drop shape on the permittivity ratio, conductivity ratio, surfactant coverage, and the elasticity number. This dissertation presents theoretical and computational approaches for estimating sound-speed in the ocean under different conditions. The first part of the dissertation discusses a fast approach for solving the inverse problem of estimating sediment sound-speed based on the Deift-Trubowitz trace formula. Under certain assumptions, this algorithm can recover the sound speed profile in the seabed using pressure field measurements in the water column at low frequencies. Selected trace elements (TEs), dissolved organic carbon, and nutrients were studied in Louisiana Shelf waters including the Mississippi (MR) and Atchafalaya (AR) River plumes during periods of high, intermediate, and low river discharges. Seasonal variations in TEs were observed at low salinity, reflecting seasonal changes in the river water endmembers. Shelf surface water dissolved Mo, Cs, U, Ni, and Cu showed conservative behavior with minor scattering in some high salinity waters. The behavior generated by neuronal networks depends on the phase relationships of its individual neurons. Observed phases result from the combined effects of individual cells and synaptic connections whose properties change dynamically. The properties of individual cells and synapses can often be characterized by driving the cell or synapse with inputs that arrive at different phases or frequencies, thus producing a feed-forward description of these properties. The purpose of this three-essay dissertation is to provide practical guidance to evaluators planning cluster-randomized trials (CRTs) of science achievement. In an educational setting, interventions are often administered at the cluster level, while outcomes are typically measured at the student level through standardized achievement testing. When evaluating an intervention, a CRT is appropriate because it allows for treatment to be modeled at a different level than the unit of analysis, and properly accounts for the violation of independence that occurs due to nesting. This study systematically reviews the methodological characteristics of energy efficiency evaluations and uses metaevaluation to assess its quality. Metaevaluation is used to systematically assess the quality of evaluation products, confirm that evaluations deliver sound findings and conclusions, are useful to the client, are credible, are ethically conducted, and are done as cost-effective as possible. The results of this study show that the ability to accurately assess evaluation for methodological quality using evaluations reports as a primary data source depends on the presence of detailed descriptions of evaluation methods.
