Interaction Of Long Waves And Nearshore Barred Topography--A Mechanism Of Bar Migration, Chang-Shik Kim Jan 1987

Interaction Of Long Waves And Nearshore Barred Topography--A Mechanism Of Bar Migration, Chang-Shik Kim

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

It has been widely observed in nature that longshore bar topography changes profile in the onshore-offshore direction. It is common for some bars to migrate onshore during post-storm phases and offshore during storms. Although the behavior of submarine bars has been widely reported, its mechanisms and forcings are far less clear. to determine the mechanism for bar migration or for the persistence of bar systems, a numerical model is developed, which accounts for the mass transport velocities in the bottom boundary layer induced by a family of combined long waves at surf-beat frequencies and wind waves. The present approach simulates …

Sorption Of Nonpolar Organics On Minerals And Aquifer Materials, Thomas B. Stauffer Jan 1987

Sorption Of Nonpolar Organics On Minerals And Aquifer Materials, Thomas B. Stauffer

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The sorption of nonpolar organic chemicals on hydrous oxides, clay minerals, and subsurface aquifer materials was studied using the batch isotherm technique. Radiolabeled (&\sp{lcub}14{rcub}&C) trichloroethylene, orthodichlorobenzene, naphthalene, and 1-methylnaphthalene were sorbed on mineral sorbents, subsurface aquifer materials, and a surface soil at six different equilibrium concentrations over a concentration range from 0.001 mg/L to 1.0 mg/L. A knowledge of the sorption coefficients of these fuel components and solvents is necessary to predict the transport of these chemicals through groundwater systems and ultimately to rivers, lakes, and estuaries. Sorption on oxides and surface soils was found to be pH-dependent with decreased …

Low-Energy Bedload Transport By Combined Wave And Current Flow On A Southern Mid-Atlantic Bight Shoreface, Malcolm O. Green Jan 1987

Low-Energy Bedload Transport By Combined Wave And Current Flow On A Southern Mid-Atlantic Bight Shoreface, Malcolm O. Green

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The control of the mean flow, wind-wave energy and wind-wave asymmetry on low-energy bedload transport magnitude, direction and divergence on a wave-dominated shoreface was investigated. The objective was to develop a mechanistic basis for postulated fairweather replenishment of the beach sediment prism by sediments derived from offshore. Fairweather currents were measured at 17.5-m and 22-m depth. Periods of competent flow were identified using a combined-flow boundary-layer model. Madsen and Grant's (1976) combined-flow bedload-transport model was used to calculate sediment fluxes after modification of the expression for instantaneous transport rate to include a threshold criterion; this was necessary since sediment is …

The Effect Of Closed Classical Orbits On Quantum Spectra: Ionization Of Atoms In A Magnetic Field, Meng Li Du Jan 1987

The Effect Of Closed Classical Orbits On Quantum Spectra: Ionization Of Atoms In A Magnetic Field, Meng Li Du

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

A quantitative theory of oscillatory spectra for atoms in a magnetic field is developed. When an atom is placed in a magnetic field, and absorption spectrum into states close to the ionization threshold is measured, it is found that the absorption as a function of energy is a superposition of many sinusoidal oscillations. Such interesting and surprising phenomenon are fully explained and described by the theory.;The theory is based on three approximations: (1) Near the atomic nucleus, the diamagnetic field is negligible. (2) Far from the nucleus, the wave propagates semiclassically. (3) Waves returning to the nucleus are similar to …

Slow Collisions Of Hydride Ion And Deuteride Ion With Sodium, Potassium And Cesium, Yicheng Wang Jan 1987

Slow Collisions Of Hydride Ion And Deuteride Ion With Sodium, Potassium And Cesium, Yicheng Wang

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The cross sections of charge transfer and electron detachment in collisions of H$\sp{-}$ and D$\sp{-}$ with Na, K and Cs have been measured for collision energies ranging from 3 to 300 eV. Both charge transfer and electron detachment are significant electron-loss mechanisms for H$\sp{-}$(D$\sp{-}$); both processes exhibit velocity-dependent isotope effects for H$\sp{-}$ and D$\sp{-}$. $\sigma\sb{\rm cg}$(E) displays high energetic thresholds for Na and K (about 20 eV for H$\sp{-}$ + Na and 40 eV for H$\sp{-}$ + K) yet no obvious one for Cs. $\sigma\sb{\rm e}$(E) does not depend on the target as much as $\sigma\sb{\rm ct}$(E) and displays near …

Sites And Diffusion Of Muons In Fcc Metal Hydride Systems, James Russell Kempton Jan 1987

Sites And Diffusion Of Muons In Fcc Metal Hydride Systems, James Russell Kempton

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

A positive muon can be considered an isotope of hydrogen due to similarities in spin and charge. For metal hydride systems, the muon enters the sample "as the last hydrogen added," and competes for the same sites as the hydrogen atoms. to observe the site competition and diffusion of both particles (muon and proton), several FCC metal hydrides, TiH{dollar}\sb{lcub}1.83{rcub}{dollar}, TiH{dollar}\sb{lcub}1.97{rcub}{dollar}, TiH{dollar}\sb{lcub}1.99{rcub}{dollar}, YH{dollar}\sb{lcub}1.77{rcub}{dollar}, YH{dollar}\sb2{dollar}, ZrH{dollar}\sb{lcub}1.94{rcub}{dollar}, and LaH{dollar}\sb{lcub}2.06{rcub}{dollar}, were studied using transverse-, zero-, and low longitudinal-field {dollar}\mu{dollar}SR. The low temperature region results indicate that the muon predominately occupies octahedral sites for the FCC metal hydrides in this study. The probability for a …

Studies Of Pipefish Foraging In Simulated Seagrass Habitats, Clifford H. Ryer Jan 1987

Studies Of Pipefish Foraging In Simulated Seagrass Habitats, Clifford H. Ryer

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Laboratory experiments determined the effects of two levels of habitat complexity upon pipefish (Syngnathus fuscus) foraging for amphipods. Habitats were composed of equal densities of either narrow (low complexity) or wide (high complexity) leafed artificial seagrass. The response to habitat, as measured by rate of encounter with amphipods, probability of attack after encounter, probability of success after attack, and overall rate of amphipod consumption, was determined for combinations of two fish size classes and three amphipod size classes. Small fish did not experience visually inhibitive effects in either habitat, while large fish had their visual fields impinged upon in the …

Renormalization Group Theory Technique And Subgrid Scale Closure For Fluid And Plasma Turbulence, Ye Zhou Jan 1987

Renormalization Group Theory Technique And Subgrid Scale Closure For Fluid And Plasma Turbulence, Ye Zhou

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Renormalization group theory is applied to incompressible three-dimension Navier-Stokes turbulence so as to eliminate unresolvable small scales. The renormalized Navier-Stokes equation includes a triple nonlinearity with the eddy viscosity exhibiting a mild cusp behavior, in qualitative agreement with the test-field model results of Kraichnan. For the cusp behavior to arise, not only is the triple nonlinearity necessary but the effects of pressure must be incorporated in the triple term.;Renormalization group theory is also applied to a model Alfven wave turbulence equation. In particular, the effect of small unresolvable subgrid scales on the large scales is computed. It is found that …

A Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Study Of Deuterated Poly(Vinylidene Fluoride) And A Copolymer Of Deuterated Vinylidene Fluoride And Tetrafluoroethylene, Montee A. Doverspike Jan 1986

A Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Study Of Deuterated Poly(Vinylidene Fluoride) And A Copolymer Of Deuterated Vinylidene Fluoride And Tetrafluoroethylene, Montee A. Doverspike

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Pulsed deuterium NMR experiments have been performed on deuterated samples of poly(vinylidene fluoride), PVF(,2), repeat unit CH(,2)CF(,2) and the copolymer poly(vinylidene fluoride)-tetrafluoroethylene (80-20), (PVF(,2)-F(,4)E). A deuterium line shape study has been employed to characterize the orientational distribution of the dipole moments in both poled and unpoled samples. In addition, the orientational distributions of chain axis alignment has been measured in stretched samples.;PVF(,2) and PVF(,2)-F(,4)E exhibit unique piezoelectric and pyroelectric properties which are due to their crystalline components (approximately 50% in typical material). Four crystalline phases exist in the homopolymer PVF(,2), the (alpha), (beta), (gamma), and the (delta). The relatively electrically …

Rydberg Atoms In Parallel Electric And Magnetic Fields, Robert Leonard Waterland Jan 1986

Rydberg Atoms In Parallel Electric And Magnetic Fields, Robert Leonard Waterland

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

I have calculated the energy spectrum of a highly excited atom which lies in parallel, static electric and magnetic fields. In parallel fields the Coulomb quantum numbers n and m are still "good" quantum numbers but 1 is not: the calculation is for n = 30, m = 1 atoms.;The eigenvalues were obtained by semi-classical quantisation of first-order classical perturbation theory and have been calculated for a large range of electric and magnetic field strengths. The results are in good agreement with those found from first-order degenerate quantum perturbation theory.;The semi-classical analysis provides a correlation diagram connecting the Stark effect …
