Total Absorption Spectroscopy Of Neutron Rich Nuclei Across The N=50 Neutron Shell Closure, Kathleen Conner Goetz Aug 2017

Total Absorption Spectroscopy Of Neutron Rich Nuclei Across The N=50 Neutron Shell Closure, Kathleen Conner Goetz

Doctoral Dissertations

Decay spectroscopy of neutron rich nuclei near doubly magic 78Ni [78-Nickel] is relevant to nuclear structure and astrophysics as well as reactor and neutrino physics. β-decay [beta-decay] calorimetry studies are essential to reconstruct the decay strength function and is used to overcome the problems arising from the high density of states leading to nuclear Pandemonium. The Modular Total Absorption Spectrometer, currently located in HRIBF at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, collected data on 25 fission products of 238U [238-Uranium] during a run in March 2015. Analysis of the 84,85,86Br [84, 85 and 86-Bromine] data from the …

Electronic And Magnetic Materials Under External Stimuli, Kenneth Robert O'Neal Aug 2017

Electronic And Magnetic Materials Under External Stimuli, Kenneth Robert O'Neal

Doctoral Dissertations

The interaction between spin, charge, and lattice degrees of freedom leads to exotic and useful properties in multifunctional materials. This delicate balance of energy scales allows external stimuli such as temperature, magnetic field, or pressure to drive to novel phases. As a local probe technique, spectroscopy can provide insight into the microscopic mechanism of the phase transitions. In this dissertation I present spectroscopic studies of functional materials under extreme conditions.

Nanomaterials have attracted attention because nanoscale confinement affects various material properties and often reduces energy scales or suppress phase transitions. Combining Raman and infrared spectroscopies reveals that the breakdown mechanism …

Measurement Of Heavy Flavor Yield And Azimuthal Anisotropy At Forward Angles In Cu + Au Collisions At A Center-Of-Mass Collision Energy Per Nucleon Of 200 Gev, Brandon Kyle Schmoll Aug 2017

Measurement Of Heavy Flavor Yield And Azimuthal Anisotropy At Forward Angles In Cu + Au Collisions At A Center-Of-Mass Collision Energy Per Nucleon Of 200 Gev, Brandon Kyle Schmoll

Doctoral Dissertations

Heavy flavor quarks are produced early in heavy ion collisions and will experience the full evolution of the Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP). Measurements at forward rapidity may be influenced as much, or more, by the cold nuclear matter effects as by the hot nuclear matter effects associated with a QGP. As the medium evolves, the initial spatial anisotropy of participants is converted to an azimuthal anisotropy in the momentum space of outgoing particles. Therefore, the momentum spectra modification and anisotropy parameters provide useful information about the heavy quark interaction with the bulk medium.

Asymmetric heavy ion collisions, such as Cu+Au, …

New Optical And Electrochemical Probes For Trace Chemicals With Health And Environmental Impacts, Thomas Stewart Carpenter Aug 2017

New Optical And Electrochemical Probes For Trace Chemicals With Health And Environmental Impacts, Thomas Stewart Carpenter

Doctoral Dissertations

The work in this dissertation focuses on the development of probes for the analysis of trace chemicals in samples with health and environmental impacts. A paper, Cu(copper)-based colorimetric probe was developed for the detection of toxic hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas. A modified Kipp’s apparatus was used to generate desired concentrations of H2S in a total volume of 1.35 L (liters). The probe shows a qualitative response down to 60 ppb (parts per billion), indicating its ability to be used in industrial settings as a replacement for the commonly used lead acetate strips. When used in conjunction …

Synthesis, Characterization, And Reactive Modification Of 2-Vinyl-4,4-Dimethyl Azlactone Polymers, Bethany Michelle Aden Aug 2017

Synthesis, Characterization, And Reactive Modification Of 2-Vinyl-4,4-Dimethyl Azlactone Polymers, Bethany Michelle Aden

Doctoral Dissertations

Polymeric materials possessing specific functionality have been designed for use in applications such as membranes, biocompatible coatings, lubricants, and tissue engineering. Because the chemical nature of the repeat units set the properties offered by the polymer, the ability to reactively modify polymer chains to integrate specific functionality expands the range of potential applications. Thus, reactive modification of polymer thin films provides a useful route to confer new properties to the underlying material, with the range, strength and type of interaction across the interface dictated by the display of functional groups decorating the surface. To address the links between design, in …

On Laser-Induced Plasma Containing Hydrogen, Ghaneshwar Gautam Aug 2017

On Laser-Induced Plasma Containing Hydrogen, Ghaneshwar Gautam

Doctoral Dissertations

Laser-induced micro-plasma dynamics are investigated in laboratory air, ultra-high-pure hydrogen gas, and hydrogen-nitrogen gas mixtures. The dissertation focuses on atomic spectroscopy of hydrogen in the visible region.

Line-of-sight measurements are analyzed to obtain spatial distributions of electron densities and excitation temperatures. The studies include evaluation of self-absorption phenomena. The plasma dynamics occur initially well above re-entry speeds and diminish to hypersonic and then supersonic expansions. Expansion velocities are measured that are above three hundred times the speed of sound in standard atmosphere. Optical breakdown is induced by using pulsed laser radiation. Emission spectra are collected by employing a spectrometer equipped …

Surface Modification Of Icy Satellites: Space Weathering Of The Large Moons Of Uranus And Alluvial Fan Formation On Saturn’S Moon Titan, Richard John Cartwright Aug 2017

Surface Modification Of Icy Satellites: Space Weathering Of The Large Moons Of Uranus And Alluvial Fan Formation On Saturn’S Moon Titan, Richard John Cartwright

Doctoral Dissertations

The surfaces of icy satellites are continually modified by space weathering and geologic processes. This dissertation explores the processes changing the surface compositions of the large moons of Uranus and mechanisms for development of possible alluvial fans on the Saturnian moon, Titan. On the Uranian satellites, I hypothesize that the origin and distribution of carbon dioxide ice results from charged particle bombardment, and that spectrally red material originated on retrograde irregular satellites. On Titan, I hypothesize that landforms identified as alluvial fans at low and mid latitudes were formed by sheetfloods, whereas possible alluvial fans at high latitudes were formed …

Localization Of Large Scale Structures, Ryan James Jensen Aug 2017

Localization Of Large Scale Structures, Ryan James Jensen

Doctoral Dissertations

We begin by giving the definition of coarse structures by John Roe, but quickly move to the equivalent concept of large scale geometry given by Jerzy Dydak. Next we present some basic but often used concepts and results in large scale geometry. We then state and prove the equivalence of various definitions of asymptotic dimension for arbitrary large scale spaces. Some of these are generalizations of asymptotic dimension for metric spaces, and many of the proofs are new. Particularly useful in proving the equivalences of the various definitions is the notion of partitions of unity, originally set forth by Jerzy …

Construction And Classification Results For Commuting Squares Of Finite Dimensional *-Algebras, Chase Thomas Worley Aug 2017

Construction And Classification Results For Commuting Squares Of Finite Dimensional *-Algebras, Chase Thomas Worley

Doctoral Dissertations

In this dissertation, we present new constructions of commuting squares, and we investigate finiteness and isolation results for these objects. We also give applications to the classification of complex Hadamard matrices and to Hopf algebras.

In the first part, we recall the notion of commuting squares which were introduced by Popa and arise naturally as invariants in Jones' theory of subfactors. We review some of the main known examples of commuting squares such as those constructed from finite groups and from complex Hadamard matrices. We also recall Nicoara's notion of defect which gives an upper bound for the number of …

Statistical Computational Topology And Geometry For Understanding Data, Joshua Lee Mike Aug 2017

Statistical Computational Topology And Geometry For Understanding Data, Joshua Lee Mike

Doctoral Dissertations

Here we describe three projects involving data analysis which focus on engaging statistics with the geometry and/or topology of the data.

The first project involves the development and implementation of kernel density estimation for persistence diagrams. These kernel densities consider neighborhoods for every feature in the center diagram and gives to each feature an independent, orthogonal direction. The creation of kernel densities in this realm yields a (previously unavailable) full characterization of the (random) geometry of a dataspace or data distribution.

In the second project, cohomology is used to guide a search for kidney exchange cycles within a kidney paired …

Numerical Methods For Non-Divergence Form Second Order Linear Elliptic Partial Differential Equations And Discontinuous Ritz Methods For Problems From The Calculus Of Variations, Stefan Raymond Schnake Aug 2017

Numerical Methods For Non-Divergence Form Second Order Linear Elliptic Partial Differential Equations And Discontinuous Ritz Methods For Problems From The Calculus Of Variations, Stefan Raymond Schnake

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation consists of three integral parts. Part one studies discontinuous Galerkin approximations of a class of non-divergence form second order linear elliptic PDEs whose coefficients are only continuous. An interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin (IP-DG) method is developed for this class of PDEs. A complete analysis of the proposed IP-DG method is carried out, which includes proving the stability and error estimate in a discrete W2;p-norm [W^2,p-norm]. Part one also studies the convergence of the vanishing moment method for this class of PDEs. The vanishing moment method refers to a PDE technique for approximating these PDEs by a …

Dependence Structures In Lévy-Type Markov Processes, Eddie Brendan Tu Aug 2017

Dependence Structures In Lévy-Type Markov Processes, Eddie Brendan Tu

Doctoral Dissertations

In this dissertation, we examine the positive and negative dependence of infinitely divisible distributions and Lévy-type Markov processes. Examples of infinitely divisible distributions include Poissonian distributions like compound Poisson and α-stable distributions. Examples of Lévy-type Markov processes include Lévy processes and Feller processes, which include a class of jump-diffusions, certain stochastic differential equations with Lévy noise, and subordinated Markov processes. Other examples of Lévy-type Markov processes are time-inhomogeneous Feller evolution systems (FES), which include additive processes. We will provide a tour of various forms of positive dependence, which include association, positive supermodular association (PSA), positive supermodular dependence (PSD), and positive …

Efficient Methods For Multidimensional Global Polynomial Approximation With Applications To Random Pdes, Peter A. Jantsch Aug 2017

Efficient Methods For Multidimensional Global Polynomial Approximation With Applications To Random Pdes, Peter A. Jantsch

Doctoral Dissertations

In this work, we consider several ways to overcome the challenges associated with polynomial approximation and integration of smooth functions depending on a large number of inputs. We are motivated by the problem of forward uncertainty quantification (UQ), whereby inputs to mathematical models are considered as random variables. With limited resources, finding more efficient and accurate ways to approximate the multidimensional solution to the UQ problem is of crucial importance, due to the “curse of dimensionality” and the cost of solving the underlying deterministic problem.

The first way we overcome the complexity issue is by exploiting the structure of the …

Generalizations Of Coarse Properties In Large Scale Spaces, Kevin Michael Sinclair Aug 2017

Generalizations Of Coarse Properties In Large Scale Spaces, Kevin Michael Sinclair

Doctoral Dissertations

Many results in large scale geometry are proven for a metric space. However, there exists many large scale spaces that are not metrizable. We generalize several concepts to general large scale spaces and prove relationships between them. First we look into the concept of coarse amenability and other variations of amenability on large scale spaces. This leads into the definition of coarse sparsification and connections with coarse amenability. From there, we look into an equivalence of Sako's definition of property A on uniformly locally finite spaces and prove that finite coarse asymptotic definition implies it. As well, we define large …

Various Topics On Graphical Structures Placed On Commutative Rings, Darrin Weber Aug 2017

Various Topics On Graphical Structures Placed On Commutative Rings, Darrin Weber

Doctoral Dissertations

In this dissertation, we look at two types of graphs that can be placed on a commutative ring: the zero-divisor graph and the ideal-based zero-divisor graph. A zero-divisor graph is a graph whose vertices are the nonzero zero-divisors of a ring and two vertices are connected by an edge if and only if their product is 0. We classify, up to isomorphism, all commutative rings without identity that have a zero-divisor graph on 14 or fewer vertices.

An ideal-based zero-divisor graph is a generalization of the zero-divisor graph where for a ring R and ideal I the vertices are { …

Approximation Of Invariant Subspaces, Faruk Yilmaz Aug 2017

Approximation Of Invariant Subspaces, Faruk Yilmaz

Doctoral Dissertations

For a real number α [alpha] the Dirichlet-type spaces 𝔇α [script D sub alpha] are the family of Hilbert spaces consisting of all analytic functions f(z) = ∑n=0[sum over n equals zero to infinity] ˆf(n) [f hat of n] zn [z to the n] defined on the open unit disc 𝔻 [unit disc] such that

n=0(n+1)α | ˆf(n) |2

[sum over n equals 0 to infinity] [(n+1) to α] [ | f hat of n | to 2]

is finite.

For α < 0, the spaces 𝔇α are known as weighted Bergman spaces. When …

Assessing The Economic Tradeoffs Between Prevention And Suppression Of Forest Fires, Elizabeth Trulia Heines Aug 2017

Assessing The Economic Tradeoffs Between Prevention And Suppression Of Forest Fires, Elizabeth Trulia Heines

Doctoral Dissertations

The number of large-scale, high-severity forest fires occurring in the United States is increasing, as is the cost to suppress these fires. These trends have prompted investigations into alternative fuels methods to help prevent these large wildfires. One of the key challenges in studying the costs and benefits of forest fire prevention management is the incorporation of risk and uncertainty surrounding management decisions. We use a technique developed by William Reed to incorporate the stochasticity of the time of a forest fire into our optimal control problems. The goal of these problems is to determine the optimal fire prevention management …

Data Analysis Methods Using Persistence Diagrams, Andrew Marchese Aug 2017

Data Analysis Methods Using Persistence Diagrams, Andrew Marchese

Doctoral Dissertations

In recent years, persistent homology techniques have been used to study data and dynamical systems. Using these techniques, information about the shape and geometry of the data and systems leads to important information regarding the periodicity, bistability, and chaos of the underlying systems. In this thesis, we study all aspects of the application of persistent homology to data analysis. In particular, we introduce a new distance on the space of persistence diagrams, and show that it is useful in detecting changes in geometry and topology, which is essential for the supervised learning problem. Moreover, we introduce a clustering framework directly …

Generalizations And Variations Of The Zero-Divisor Graph, Grace Elizabeth Mcclurkin Aug 2017

Generalizations And Variations Of The Zero-Divisor Graph, Grace Elizabeth Mcclurkin

Doctoral Dissertations

We explore generalizations and variations of the zero-divisor graph on commutative rings with identity. A zero-divisor graph is a graph whose vertex set is the nonzero zero-divisors of a ring, wherein two distinct vertices are adjacent if their product is zero. Variations of the zero-divisor graph are created by changing the vertex set, the edge condition, or both. The annihilator graph and the extended zero-divisor graph are both variations that change the edge condition, whereas the compressed graph and ideal-based graph change the vertex set. By combining these concepts, we define and investigate graphs where both the vertex set and …

Electrochemical Behavior Of Dense Electrodes For Impedancemetric Nox Sensors, Nabamita Pal Jul 2017

Electrochemical Behavior Of Dense Electrodes For Impedancemetric Nox Sensors, Nabamita Pal

Doctoral Dissertations

NOx (NO and NO2) exhaust gas sensors for diesel powered vehicles have traditionally consisted of porous platinum (Pt) electrodes along with a dense ZrO2 based electrolyte. Advancement in diesel engine technology results in lower NOx emissions. Although Pt is chemically and mechanically tolerant to the extreme exhaust gas environment, it is also a strong catalyst for oxygen reduction, which can interfere with the detection of NOx at concentrations below 100 ppm. Countering this behavior can add to the complexity and cost of the conventional NO x sensor design. Recent studies have shown that dense electrodes are less prone to heterogeneous …

Full Simulation For The Qweak Experiment At 1.16 And 0.877 Gev And Their Impact On Extracting The Pv Asymmetry In The N→Δ A Transition, Hend Abdullah Nuhait Jul 2017

Full Simulation For The Qweak Experiment At 1.16 And 0.877 Gev And Their Impact On Extracting The Pv Asymmetry In The N→Δ A Transition, Hend Abdullah Nuhait

Doctoral Dissertations

The Qweak project is seeking to find new physics beyond the Standard Model. It is aimed to measure the weak charge of the proton, which has never been measured, at 4% precision at low momentum transfer. The experiment is performed by scattering electrons from protons and exploiting parity violation in the weak interaction at low four-momentum transfer.

In this experiment, two measurements were considered: which are elastic and inelastic. The elastic is to measure the proton's weak charge. In addition, the inelastic asymmetry measurement, which will extract the low energy constant dΔ. That measurement works in the neutral current …

Understanding The Surface Fouling Mechanism Of Ultrananocrystalline Diamond Microelectrodes Using Microfluidics For Neurochemical Detection, An-Yi Chang Jul 2017

Understanding The Surface Fouling Mechanism Of Ultrananocrystalline Diamond Microelectrodes Using Microfluidics For Neurochemical Detection, An-Yi Chang

Doctoral Dissertations

Electrochemical methods are widely used for chronic neurochemical sensing, but thus far, the organic solution redox reactions fouled the electrodes' surface. It caused the reduction of sensitivity and the electrodes' lifetime.

Here, we present the boron-doped nanocrystalline diamond microelectrodes (BDUNCD) as the next generation electrode material for neurochemical sensor development. To aid in long-term chronic monitoring of neurochemicals, they have a wide window of electrochemical potential, extremely low background current, and excellent chemical inertness. The main research goal is to reduce the rate of electrode fouling due to the reaction by-products, and significantly extend their useful lifetime.

We systematically characterize …

Motion-Capture-Based Hand Gesture Recognition For Computing And Control, Andrew Gardner Jul 2017

Motion-Capture-Based Hand Gesture Recognition For Computing And Control, Andrew Gardner

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on the study and development of algorithms that enable the analysis and recognition of hand gestures in a motion capture environment. Central to this work is the study of unlabeled point sets in a more abstract sense. Evaluations of proposed methods focus on examining their generalization to users not encountered during system training.

In an initial exploratory study, we compare various classification algorithms based upon multiple interpretations and feature transformations of point sets, including those based upon aggregate features (e.g. mean) and a pseudo-rasterization of the capture space. We find aggregate feature classifiers to be balanced across …

Thermodynamic Characterization And Isothermal Separability Of Heavy Fission Product Chelates For Post-Detonation Nuclear Forensic Analysis, Steven Adam Stratz May 2017

Thermodynamic Characterization And Isothermal Separability Of Heavy Fission Product Chelates For Post-Detonation Nuclear Forensic Analysis, Steven Adam Stratz

Doctoral Dissertations

Nuclear terrorism, one of the most critical threats to national security, exhibits complexities that do not exist with similar threats from sanctioned state actors. Responding to a domestic nuclear terrorism strike is difficult when the original source of the weapon may be unknown, given that terrorist organizations (at the time of writing) do not themselves have nuclear technology sufficient to design and build nuclear weapons. Consequently, the development of forensic techniques to help source and characterize nuclear weapons after detonation has recently become an area of interest. This relatively new field of science, known as post-detonation nuclear forensics, aims to …

Remote Neutron Spectroscopy On Mars, Christopher Gayle Tate May 2017

Remote Neutron Spectroscopy On Mars, Christopher Gayle Tate

Doctoral Dissertations

Remote neutron spectroscopy is an important technique in planetary science that allows for classification of the amount of light elements in a planetary regolith. It is especially suited for studying hydrogen abundances and elements with high thermal neutron absorption cross sections in the top ~1 meter of regolith. The Mars Science Laboratory rover Curiosity carries the first rover based neutron spectrometer Dynamic Albedo of Neutrons (DAN) in Gale crater, Mars. As the DAN instrument operates in passive mode, it is sensitive to neutrons produced through Galactic Cosmic Ray interactions and neutrons generated by the rover's Multi-Mission Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator. In …

Effect Of Crosslinking On Carbon Nanotube Materials Through Chemical Treatment And Irradiation, Xinyi Lu May 2017

Effect Of Crosslinking On Carbon Nanotube Materials Through Chemical Treatment And Irradiation, Xinyi Lu

Doctoral Dissertations

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) exhibit a variety of exceptional properties, especially their ultrahigh tensile strength on the order of 100GPa show promise for constituting the next-generation carbon fiber. However, challenges remain to translate these properties into useful technology, primarily due to the sliding of the tubes past one another under tensile loading. The work presented in this dissertation is focused on enhancing the interaction between the CNTs and their bundles in a macro-assembly, in order to improve the tensile properties of the material.

Applying inter-tube crosslinks has been predicted to significantly enhance the stress transfer between the CNT components. We developed …

Biogeochemical Characteristics Of Organic Matter In A Karst Groundwater System, Teresa Lynn Brown May 2017

Biogeochemical Characteristics Of Organic Matter In A Karst Groundwater System, Teresa Lynn Brown

Doctoral Dissertations

Development of regional groundwater carbon budgets hinges on the ability to quantify and monitor biogeochemical processes controlled by microbial recycling of natural dissolved organic matter (DOM) in carbon-limited (oligotrophic) areas. DOM is the major reservoir of organic carbon in aquatic ecosystems. However, isolation and characterization of DOM in oligotrophic freshwater systems has been limited by operational protocols and instrumentation. The goals of this research were to investigate the seasonal dynamics of microbially-driven organic matter degradation in a karst groundwater system influenced by surface water, and to identify analytical tools and biomarkers to measure long-term hydro-ecological trends in the Appalachian region. …

Jet-Hadron Correlations Relative To The Event Plane Pb--Pb Collisions At The Lhc In Alice, Joel Anthony Mazer May 2017

Jet-Hadron Correlations Relative To The Event Plane Pb--Pb Collisions At The Lhc In Alice, Joel Anthony Mazer

Doctoral Dissertations

In relativistic heavy ion collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), a hot, dense and strongly interacting medium known as the Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) is produced. Quarks and gluons from incoming nuclei collide to produce partons at high momenta early in the collisions. By fragmenting into collimated sprays of hadrons, these partons form 'jets'. Within the framework of perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (pQCD), jet production is well understood in pp collisions. We can use jets measured in pp interactions as a baseline reference for comparing to heavy ion collision systems to detect and study jet quenching. The jet quenching mechanism …

Analysis And Design Of Communication Avoiding Algorithms For Out Of Memory(Oom) Svd, Khairul Kabir May 2017

Analysis And Design Of Communication Avoiding Algorithms For Out Of Memory(Oom) Svd, Khairul Kabir

Doctoral Dissertations

Many applications — including big data analytics, information retrieval, gene expression analysis, and numerical weather prediction – require the solution of large, dense singular value decomposition (SVD). The size of matrices used in many of these applications is becoming too large to fit into into a computer’s main memory at one time, and the traditional SVD algorithms that require all the matrix components to be loaded into memory before computation starts cannot be used directly. Moving data (communication) between levels of memory hierarchy and the disk exposes extra challenges to design SVD for such big matrices because of the exponential …

Production Of Electrons From Heavy Flavor Decays In Proton-Lead Collisions Measured With Alice At The Lhc, Rebecca Michelle Scott May 2017

Production Of Electrons From Heavy Flavor Decays In Proton-Lead Collisions Measured With Alice At The Lhc, Rebecca Michelle Scott

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation presents a measurement of the yield and cross section of electrons from heavy flavor decays at central rapidity in proton-lead collisions measured by the ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) detector at the Large Hadron Collider. This analysis extends the transverse momentum reach of an earlier measurement in ALICE and the comparison is shown. The cross section of single electrons in proton-lead collisions is compared to the value expected in the absence of nuclear modification from proton-proton collisions. The cross section is well described by the perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics and no statistically significant alteration due to hot nuclear …
