Coastal Flood Risk In The Context Of Climate Change And Urbanization In Northeastern South Carolina, Hongyuan Zhang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Researchers and the public now widely recognize the seriousness of coastal flood risks. Various changes in natural processes, such as altered rainfall patterns, increased tropical cyclone intensities, and sea-level rise, are consequences of global warming induced by heightened greenhouse gas concentrations. To comprehensively understand coastal compound flooding, it is crucial to consider multiple processes and their interactions. Moreover, the growth of coastal cities and the concentration of people and assets in these areas make them increasingly vulnerable to flooding events. Accurately estimating the future flood risks faced by coastal communities necessitates addressing the compounding effects on coastal flood risk, taking …

Enabling Iov Communication Through Secure Decentralized Clustering Using Federated Deep Reinforcement Learning, Chandler Scott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Internet of Vehicles (IoV) holds immense potential for revolutionizing transporta- tion systems by facilitating seamless vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication. However, challenges such as congestion, pollution, and security per- sist, particularly in rural areas with limited infrastructure. Existing centralized solu- tions are impractical in such environments due to latency and privacy concerns. To address these challenges, we propose a decentralized clustering algorithm enhanced with Federated Deep Reinforcement Learning (FDRL). Our approach enables low- latency communication, competitive packet delivery ratios, and cluster stability while preserving data privacy. Additionally, we introduce a trust-based security framework for IoV environments, integrating a central authority …

A Uniformly Most Powerful Test For The Mean Of A Beta Distribution, Richard Ntiamoah Kyei Aug 2024

A Uniformly Most Powerful Test For The Mean Of A Beta Distribution, Richard Ntiamoah Kyei

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The beta distribution is used in numerous real-world applications, including areas such as manufacturing (quality control) and analyzing patient outcomes in health care. It also plays a key role in statistical theory, including multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) and Bayesian statistics. It is a flexible distribution that can account for many different characteristics of real data. To our surprise, there has been very little work or discussion on performing statistical hypothesis testing for the mean when it is reasonable to assume that the population is beta distributed. Many analysts conduct traditional analyses using a t-test or nonparametric approach, try transformations, …

Spin And Charge Transport In Metallic Ferrimagnets And Disordered Magnetic Oxides, Leopoldo A. Hernandez Jun 2024

Spin And Charge Transport In Metallic Ferrimagnets And Disordered Magnetic Oxides, Leopoldo A. Hernandez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recent efforts have been exploring the use of thin film synthetic ferrimagnets and disordered magnetic oxides for applications in spintronic devices. Due to the antiferromagnetic exchange interaction, ferrimagnetic materials offer the ultrafast dynamics of the antiferromagnetic exchange, with a net magnetization that can be influenced externally. With two, or more, competing ferromagnet sublattices, interesting properties arise that depend on the final magnetic landscape after growth of the material and it’s inherent magnetic anisotropy energies. Properties such as magnetic compensation temperatures, and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy are attractive for applications in spintronic memory and logic devices, some already being implemented in MRAM …

Combinatorial Problems On The Integers: Colorings, Games, And Permutations, Collier Gaiser

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation consists of several combinatorial problems on the integers. These problems fit inside the areas of extremal combinatorics and enumerative combinatorics.

We first study monochromatic solutions to equations when integers are colored with finitely many colors in Chapter 2. By looking at subsets of {1, 2, . . . , n} whose least common multiple is small, we improved a result of Brown and Rödl on the smallest integer n such that every 2-coloring of {1, 2, . . . , n} has a monochromatic solution to equations with unit fractions. Using a recent result of Boza, …

Trust, Transparency, And Transport: The Impact Of Privacy Protection On The Acceptance Of Last-Mile Drone Delivery, Jurgen Heinz Famula Jun 2024

Trust, Transparency, And Transport: The Impact Of Privacy Protection On The Acceptance Of Last-Mile Drone Delivery, Jurgen Heinz Famula

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A common set of problems commercial delivery companies face is finding ways to increase the efficiency and reliability of the “last mile” of a package’s journey, all while reducing operating costs. This need for efficiency has driven many companies to explore using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), or drones, to get packages to their final destination. Although UAVs have great potential to help increase efficiency in commercial package delivery, this comes at a potential cost to the privacy of people who intersect the flight paths of these unmanned vehicles. This thesis explores the effect of a mobile phone application for commercial …

Capturing Latent Abilities And Latent Capacities Of Professional Golfers Using Nonlinear Mixed Effects Growth Modeling, Mac Wetherbee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study demonstrates an effective and innovative approach to measuring the latent athletic abilities and capacities of professional golfers. I used nonlinear mixed effects growth modeling (e.g., Dynamic Measurement Modeling) to measure professional golfers’ ability levels and capacities for improvement. I accomplished this using a two-stage modeling approach. First, a crossed linear mixed effects model estimated each player’s ability level in each year. In the second stage, I used the results from the first stage to estimate several candidate nonlinear growth trajectories for players’ abilities over time. The quadratic growth trajectory was the best-fitting of these trajectories and was used …

Bridging The Geometric And Quantum Information Of Structured Light, Andrew Alexander Voitiv

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this Dissertation, we review the several advances we have developed for preparing and measuring the geometric and quantum information of structured light. The geometric phase acts as a memory of transformations undertaken by physical processes; quantum entanglement underpins quantum information science which explores the theoretical and technological applications of nonclassical correlations. Beginning with classical light, we demonstrate novel experiments and measurements of geometric phase that are enabled by spatially structuring laser beams. We then extend those concepts to complement the richer possibilities within quantum optics. Our work covers new abilities in tailoring and measuring the phase content of spatially-structured …

The Mandelbrot set is a mathematical mystery. Finding its home somewhere be-
tween holomorphic dynamics and complex analysis, the Mandelbrot set showcases
its usefulness in fields across the many realms of math—ranging from physics to nu-
merical methods and even biology. While typically defined in terms of its bounded
sequences, this thesis intends to illuminate the Mandelbrot set as a type of param-
eterization of connectivity itself, specifically that of complex-valued rational maps
of the form z → z² + c. This fully illustrated guide to the Mandelbrot set merges
the worlds of intuition and theory with a series of …

Mesopelagic Microplastic Transport Interactions With The Biological Carbon Pump, Mikayla Clark May 2024

Mesopelagic Microplastic Transport Interactions With The Biological Carbon Pump, Mikayla Clark

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Numerous studies on the transport and fate of plastic have alluded to a size-specific mechanism for removing microplastics (plastics below 5mm in diameter) from the epipelagic. Plastics like polyethylene and polypropylene which are less dense than seawater during manufacturing and use have been found throughout the water column and even in seafloor sediments. However, the mechanism for their vertical transport is poorly understood. This project calculates the vertical flux of microfibers during the 2021 EXPORTS North Atlantic campaign and captures the decline of the spring bloom from the base of the mixed layer to the mesopelagic by utilizing both lagrangian …

Human Perception Of Modern Light Field Rendered Displays: A Comparison Of A Lightfield And Headtracked Display System And Human Perception Of Animation Degradation Independent Of Render Frame Rate, Tim Bruce May 2024

Human Perception Of Modern Light Field Rendered Displays: A Comparison Of A Lightfield And Headtracked Display System And Human Perception Of Animation Degradation Independent Of Render Frame Rate, Tim Bruce

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research directly compares natively head tracked spatial displays against actively head tracked ones. The belief is that by suppressing the latency, emulation of object presence can be improved. Modern Virtual Reality (VR) headset systems target 90Hz refresh rates in order to reduce tracking latency, yet with such low latencies, users still report motion sickness. Frame rates in film target 24-30Hz for smooth motion. This disconnect between frame rates for smooth motion and head tracking speed indicates that they may not be related. This thesis addresses these questions of latency and animation speed by building two display systems, a native …

Student Mathematical Sensemaking In The Transition From Spins To Positions In Quantum Mechanics, Anthony R. Pina May 2024

Student Mathematical Sensemaking In The Transition From Spins To Positions In Quantum Mechanics, Anthony R. Pina

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Quantum mechanics (QM) is a fundamental theory in physics that was developed based on a series of experiments. Rather than being built up from first principles, QM is built on a series of postulates that describe the outcomes of those experiments. The postulates establish both the mathematical formalism and basic concepts used to model quantum systems. While different systems require varying degrees of complex mathematics to model, the basic principles remain.

“Spins-first” QM instruction takes advantage of these varying degrees of mathematical difficulty by first introducing students to spin-1 2 systems which can be modeled with relatively simple mathematics. These …
