A Modified Hopfield Network For The K-Median Problem, Cody Rossiter Mar 2023

A Modified Hopfield Network For The K-Median Problem, Cody Rossiter

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The k-median problem is a clustering problem where given n locations one wants to select k locations such that the total distance between every non-selected location and its nearest selected location is minimized. The problem has applications in several fields, including network design, resource allocation, and data mining.

There is currently limited research on applying neural networks to combinatorial optimization problems and we contribute by presenting a modified Hopfield network for the k-median problem. Hopfield networks are a type of neural network that can be applied to combinatorial optimization problems but often run slowly and produce poor solutions.

Our modifications …

Investigating The Structure Of Metal-Organic Frameworks And The Behaviors Of Adsorbed Guest Molecules In Mofs Via Solid-State Nmr Spectroscopy, Yihao Shen

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of hybrid organic-inorganic microporous materials with lots of significant applications including gas capture and storage, gas separation, batteries, catalysis, ion exchange and drug delivery. MOFs based on s-block metals are important due to their many practical applications. These MOFs are also very interesting because the s-block MOFs often exhibit unpredictable behavior of coordination. In this thesis, the structures of six s-block metal (Li, Na, Cs, Mg, Ca, Sr) based MOFs involving V-shaped link, 4, 4′- sulfonyldibenzoate (SDB) are characterized by various techniques including, powder X-ray diffraction, TGA and solid-state NMR spectroscopy. 13C CPMAS …

Oligo [Poly(Ethylene Glycol) Fumarate] Gels With Photo-Sensitive Pendent Groups, Andrew Chung

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Stimuli-responsive hydrogels are 3D polymeric structures that offer attractive qualities within the biomedical field due to their excellent biocompatibility and tunability to be employed in drug release, wound healing, and implants. Aliphatic polyesters are biodegradable polymers that naturally degrade by the process of simple ester hydrolysis. Oligo[poly(ethylene glycol) fumarate] (OPF) is a linear polyester containing repeating units of poly(ethylene glycol) and unsaturated fumarate. OPF naturally degrades through hydrolytic cleavage into poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and fumaric acid which is a naturally occurring compound found in the Kreb’s cycle. However, in some cases, it would be beneficial to activate or accelerate this …

Characterization Of Deposited Copper Oxide Films On Copper Substrates, Millicent Castillo Feb 2023

Characterization Of Deposited Copper Oxide Films On Copper Substrates, Millicent Castillo

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The deposition of copper oxide films on copper substrates was investigated by the electrochemical, thermal, and hydrothermal oxidation of copper. The formed oxides were characterized using various surface analytical techniques to determine the film’s morphology, composition, and thickness. The results show that by growing oxides electrochemically, a duplex layer composing of CuO and Cu2O film was formed on the copper surface, having characteristics of being porous and possessing needle-like structures. An oxide film composed of CuO and Cu2O, which shows minimal porosity and possess mixtures of crystalline and non-crystalline structures, is formed on the copper surface …

Attention-Based Multi-Source-Free Domain Adaptation For Eeg Emotion Recognition, Amir Hesam Salimnia Feb 2023

Attention-Based Multi-Source-Free Domain Adaptation For Eeg Emotion Recognition, Amir Hesam Salimnia

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Electroencephalography (EEG) based emotion recognition in affective brain-computer interfaces has advanced significantly in recent years. Unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) methods have been successfully used to mitigate the need for large amounts of training data, which is required due to the inter-subject variability of EEG signals. Typical UDA solutions require access to raw source data to leverage the knowledge learned from the labelled source domains (previous subjects) across the target domain (a new subject), raising privacy concerns. To tackle this issue, we propose Attention-based Multi-Source-Free Domain Adaptation (AMFDA) for EEG emotion recognition. AMFDA attempts to transfer knowledge of source models to …

Late Neoarchean To Middle Paleoproterozoic Geology Of Devon And Ellesmere Islands, Canadian Arctic, Joshua P. Laughton

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The northernmost exposure of the Laurentian shield in Canada outcrops on Devon and Ellesmere islands within the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Due to the remote location, the basement rocks of these islands have received little attention. From this study, zircon crystallization ages demonstrate that Devon Island is underlain by a late Neoarchean terrane comprising orthogneisses emplaced at ca. 2.55–2.51 Ga and an interleaved metasedimentary sequence deposited at ca. ≥2.47 Ga. On northern Devon Island, younger metasedimentary sequence(s) were deposited at ca. 2.2–1.9 Ga and intruded by ca. 2.01–1.95 Ga granitoids. Devon and Ellesmere islands experienced widespread metamorphic activity associated with the …

The Fate Of Carbonate Rocks During Hypervelocity Impacts: Case Studies From Three Impact Structures On Earth, Nicolas D. Garroni

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Approximately 28% of all hypervelocity impact structures discovered on Earth exist in a carbonate-dominated target sequence. Despite decades of research, how carbonate rocks and minerals react to shock metamorphism is still poorly understood. In this contribution, three impact structures on Earth were studied to determine the effects of shock metamorphism on carbonate minerals: Chicxulub, Crooked Creek and Jebel Waqf as Suwwan.

At Chicxulub, carbonates from the impact-melt bearing breccia of drill core, M0077A were characterized petrographically and geochemically. Calcite was the only carbonate mineral present and is abundant throughout the impact breccia in five distinct varieties: limestone clasts …

Soil Organic Carbon Dynamics And The Effects Of Resident Vegetation In Pelee Island Soils, Colton Geil Jan 2023

Soil Organic Carbon Dynamics And The Effects Of Resident Vegetation In Pelee Island Soils, Colton Geil

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Soil organic carbon (SOC) enhances nutrient retention, structural stability, porosity, aeration, water infiltration, and overall soil health. Understanding SOC turnover and its preservation in soils is paramount to managing carbon sequestration. On Pelee Island, we used δ13C, δ15N and C/N of SOC at various depths to identify the sources and evolution of SOC with time. At depths >150 cm, SOM was from a mixture of aquatic and terrestrially derived sources. We also analyzed the impact of permanent cover crops called ‘resident vegetation’ on the ability of soils to store carbon in different aggregate size fractions. SOC …

Synthesis Of Ni(Ii) Complexes For Allylic C(Sp3)-H Bond Activation For Aerobic Oxidation Catalysis, Shagana Kukendran Jan 2023

Synthesis Of Ni(Ii) Complexes For Allylic C(Sp3)-H Bond Activation For Aerobic Oxidation Catalysis, Shagana Kukendran

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Nickel is a widely abundant and inexpensive metal. Catalysts are substances that remain unconsumed and increase the rate of reactions by reducing the activation energy barrier, often by providing an alternative route. The main goal of this study is to prepare Ni(II) complexes that can promote a catalytic aerobic oxidation reaction by breaking allylic C-H bonds. Based on previous studies, allylnickel N-heterocyclic carbene complexes react with molecular oxygen to give useful carbonyl compounds with a Ni(II)-OH by-product, which undergoes dimerization. In order to achieve catalysis, dimerization of the Ni(II)-OH should be prevented and C-H activation has to be achieved to …

Spike-Time Neural Codes And Their Implication For Memory, Alexandra Busch Jan 2023

Spike-Time Neural Codes And Their Implication For Memory, Alexandra Busch

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The possibility of temporal coding in neural data through patterns of precise spike times has long been of interest in neuroscience. Recent and rapid advancements in experimental neuroscience make it not only possible, but also routine, to record the spikes of hundreds to thousands of cells simultaneously. These increasingly common large-scale data sets provide new opportunities to discover temporally precise and behaviourally relevant patterns of spiking activity across large populations of cells. At the same time, the exponential growth in size and complexity of new data sets presents its own methodological challenges. Specifically, it remains unclear how best to (1) …

Nearby Galaxies: Modelling Star Formation Histories And Contamination By Unresolved Background Galaxies, Hadi Papei Jan 2023

Nearby Galaxies: Modelling Star Formation Histories And Contamination By Unresolved Background Galaxies, Hadi Papei

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Galaxies are complex systems of stars, gas, dust, and dark matter which evolve over billions of years, and one of the main goals of astrophysics is to understand how these complex systems form and change. Measuring the star formation history of nearby galaxies, in which thousands of stars can be resolved individually, has provided us with a clear picture of their evolutionary history and the evolution of galaxies in general.

In this work, we have developed the first public Python package, SFHPy, to measure star formation histories of nearby galaxies using their colour-magnitude diagrams. In this algorithm, an observed colour-magnitude …

Pythagorean Vectors And Rational Orthonormal Matrices, Aishat Olagunju Jan 2023

Pythagorean Vectors And Rational Orthonormal Matrices, Aishat Olagunju

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

A Pythagorean vector is an integer vector having an integer 2-norm. Such vectors are closely related to Pythagorean n-tuples, since n-tuples are the building blocks for Pythagorean vectors. Pythagorean vectors are, in their turn, the building blocks for rational orthonormal matrices. The work in this thesis has a pedagogical application to the QR decomposition of matrices, widely used in Linear Algebra. A barrier for students learning the details of the QR decomposition of a given matrix A is the occurrence of square-roots that cannot be simplified during the application of the two standard algorithms, namely the Gram--Schmidt method and Householder …

Advances in Computer Vision and Aerial Imaging have enabled countless downstream applications. To this end, aerial imagery could be leveraged to analyze the usage of parking lots. This would enable retail centres to allocate space better and eliminate the parking oversupply problem. With this use case in mind, the proposed research introduces a novel framework for parking lot occupancy assessments. The framework consists of a pipeline of components that map a sequence of image sets spanning a parking lot at different time intervals to a parking lot turnover heatmap that encodes the frequency each parking stall was used. The pipeline …

This study uses folk theories to enhance human-centered “explainable AI” (HCXAI). The complexity and opacity of machine learning has compelled the need for explainability. Consumer services like Amazon, Facebook, TikTok, and Spotify have resulted in machine learning becoming ubiquitous in the everyday lives of the non-expert, lay public. The following research questions inform this study: What are the folk theories of users that explain how a recommender system works? Is there a relationship between the folk theories of users and the principles of HCXAI that would facilitate the development of more transparent and explainable recommender systems? Using the Spotify music …

Advances In The Automatic Detection Of Optimization Opportunities In Computer Programs, Delaram Talaashrafi

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Massively parallel and heterogeneous systems together with their APIs have been used for various applications. To achieve high-performance software, the programmer should develop optimized algorithms to maximize the system’s resource utilization. However, designing such algorithms is challenging and time-consuming. Therefore, optimizing compilers are developed to take part in the programmer’s optimization burden. Developing effective optimizing compilers is an active area of research. Specifically, because loop nests are usually the hot spots in a program, their optimization has been the main subject of many optimization algorithms. This thesis aims to improve the scope and applicability of performance optimization algorithms used in …

The Origin And Evolution Of Impact Crater Lakes: A Case Study Of The Ries Impact Structure, Germany, Matthew J. O. Svensson Dec 2022

The Origin And Evolution Of Impact Crater Lakes: A Case Study Of The Ries Impact Structure, Germany, Matthew J. O. Svensson

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Impact events are known to generate hydrothermal systems, which can subsequently vent into an overlying crater lake and potentially create ideal conditions for some microbial life-forms. Thus, early post-impact sedimentary deposits would be excellent targets for Mars sample return, and as such, the robust characterization of such deposits on Earth is critical. In this thesis, we establish an improved understanding of how the Ries crater lake formed, and how an active impact-generated hydrothermal system influenced its early evolution. The ~14.8 Ma Ries impact structure hosts the majority of its paleolake deposits within the structure's central basin with some deposits situated …

Algorithmic Improvements In Deep Reinforcement Learning, Norman L. Tasfi

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Reinforcement Learning (RL) has seen exponential performance improvements over the past decade, achieving super-human performance across many domains. Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL), the combination of RL methods with deep neural networks (DNN) as function approximators, has unlocked much of this progress. The path to generalized artificial intelligence (GAI) will depend on deep learning (DL) and RL. However, much work is required before the technology reaches anything resembling GAI. Therefore, this thesis focuses on a subset of areas within RL that require additional research to advance the field, specifically: sample efficiency, planning, and task transfer. The first area, sample efficiency, refers …

Discourse, Power Dynamics, And Risk Amplification In Disaster Risk Management In Canada, Martins Oluwole Olu-Omotayo

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The domain of disaster risk management is rife with discursive contentions, whereby dominant discourses amplify the powers of risk actors to precipitate and reinforce political, economic, and environmental inequalities that predispose different sections of the population to unequal disaster risk vulnerabilities. This thesis identified important actors (government, risk experts, media, and NGOs) that shape the power dynamics in disaster risk management in Canada and explained their roles, influences, and the dimensions in which their powers negotiate each other through risk discourses. The patterns of these power dynamics in the three aspects of power –communication, assessment, and social trust –were also …

Multi-Trace Matrix Models From Noncommutative Geometry, Hamed Hessam Dec 2022

Multi-Trace Matrix Models From Noncommutative Geometry, Hamed Hessam

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Dirac ensembles are finite dimensional real spectral triples where the Dirac operator is allowed to vary within a suitable family of operators and is assumed to be random. The Dirac operator plays the role of a metric on a manifold in the noncommutative geometry context of spectral triples. Thus, integration over the set of Dirac operators within a Dirac ensemble, a crucial aspect of a theory of quantum gravity, is a noncommutative analog of integration over metrics.

Dirac ensembles are closely related to random matrix ensembles. In order to determine properties of specific Dirac ensembles, we use techniques from random …

On The Spatial Modelling Of Biological Invasions, Tedi Ramaj Dec 2022

On The Spatial Modelling Of Biological Invasions, Tedi Ramaj

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

We investigate problems of biological spatial invasion through the use of spatial modelling. We begin by examining the spread of an invasive weed plant species through a forest by developing a system of partial differential equations (PDEs) involving an invasive weed and a competing native plant species. We find that extinction of the native plant species may be achieved by increasing the carrying capacity of the forest as well as the competition coefficient between the species. We also find that the boundary conditions exert long-term control on the biomass of the invasive weed and hence should be considered when implementing …

Near-Ir Laser Ablation Of Simulated Radiologically Contaminated Oxides On Carbon Steel Feeder Pipes, Thao Viet Do Nov 2022

Near-Ir Laser Ablation Of Simulated Radiologically Contaminated Oxides On Carbon Steel Feeder Pipes, Thao Viet Do

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

As nuclear power plants age and retire from service, many countries face significant challenges concerning the safe long-term storage and disposal of large volumes of low and intermediate level radioactive wastes (L&ILW). The volumes of metallic waste are of particular concern, as when metal corrodes it produces hydrogen that could lead to pressure build-up in interim storage and disposal. In Canada, a significant fraction of the metallic wastes for Canada Deuterium Uranium (CANDU) nuclear reactors are out-of-core reactor components, such as carbon steel (CS) feeder pipes. The radioactive contamination is expected to be largely confined to the surface oxide layers …

Three Contributions To The Theory And Practice Of Optimizing Compilers, Linxiao Wang Nov 2022

Three Contributions To The Theory And Practice Of Optimizing Compilers, Linxiao Wang

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The theory and practice of optimizing compilers gather techniques that, from input computer programs, aim at generating code making the best use of modern computer hardware. On the theory side, this thesis contributes new results and algorithms in polyhedral geometry. On the practical side, this thesis contributes techniques for the tuning of parameters of programs targeting GPUs. We detailed these two fronts of our work below.

Consider a convex polyhedral set P given by a system of linear inequalities A*x <= b, where A is an integer matrix and b is an integer vector. We are interested in the integer hull PI of P which is the smallest convex polyhedral set that contains all the integer points in P. In Chapter …

Portfolio Optimization Analysis In The Family Of 4/2 Stochastic Volatility Models, Yuyang Cheng

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Over the last two decades, trading of financial derivatives has increased significantly along with richer and more complex behaviour/traits on the underlying assets. The need for more advanced models to capture traits and behaviour of risky assets is crucial. In this spirit, the state-of-the-art 4/2 stochastic volatility model was recently proposed by Grasselli in 2017 and has gained great attention ever since. The 4/2 model is a superposition of a Heston (1/2) component and a 3/2 component, which is shown to be able to eliminate the limitations of these two individual models, bringing the best out of each other. Based …
