Metallothioneins (MT) are a family of cysteine-rich metal-binding intrinsically disordered proteins that are ubiquitous across life. The proposed functions of MTs are to maintain Zn(II) homeostasis, participate in heavy metal detoxification, and protect against oxidative stress by binding to a variety of metals in a range of stoichiometries. However, due to their disordered nature and ability to form multiple metallated species, these diverse structures are not well characterized. The Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm is an iterative algorithm for finding the maximum likelihood estimates in problems involving missing data or latent variables. The EM algorithm can be applied to problems consisting of evidently incomplete data or missingness situations, such as truncated distributions, censored or grouped observations, and also to problems in which the missingness of the data is not natural or evident, such as mixed-effects models, mixture models, log-linear models, and latent variables. Impact-generated hydrothermal systems result from interactions between a permeable substrate, an impact-generated heat source, and fluids (e.g., H2O). A comprehensive understanding of the evolution of these terrestrial features has significant implications in the search for habitable environments on Mars, a focus in the emerging field of astrobiology. This thesis presents a detailed case study of the impact-generated hydrothermal alteration of impactites at the Clearwater West impact structure, Quebec, focusing on hydrothermally precipitated quartz vugs in crater-fill impact melt rocks. RNA dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp), a critical enzyme in the life cycle of the virus, can be targeted by using nucleotide antivirals thus causing inhibition. Novel ribonucleotides antiviral agents that possess nucleobase modifications and a 5′-phosphoramidate prodrug moiety, referred to as a ProTide, have been synthesized. The circular liquid jet impingement with subsequent hydraulic jump formation is studied theoretically using boundary-layer and thin-film approaches. Three different scenarios are tackled, namely, an accelerated Newtonian jet impinging on a stationary disk, a steady Newtonian jet impinging on a rotating disk, and a steady viscoelastic liquid jet impinging on a stationary disk. Accordingly, the effects of jet acceleration, gravity, centrifugal forces, and fluid elasticity on the flow behaviour and the jump are examined. This project engages in a detailed examination of the phase transition of TiO2 and the synthesis of heterostructured metal oxides using an eco-friendly method of ball-milling. It models market crashes and two main financial instruments as independent components to simulate clients’ portfolios. Initially exploring single distributions on mutual funds such as Laplace and t distributions, the research finds limited success. Instead, a normal-Weibull spliced distribution is introduced to model log returns. Given an oriented Riemannian embedding i:X->Y of codimension 1 we construct a family of unbounded KK-cycles i!(epsilon), each of which represents the shriek class of i in KK-theory. In this thesis, we employ statistical modeling and methods to examine COVID-19 data, and we develop new methods to address new issues that invalidate some standard methods.

In the first study, we employ semiparametric and nonparametric survival models as well as data visualization techniques to examine the epidemiological features of COVID-19. Based on our numerical results, the median incubation time is about 5 days, and the elders are more likely to have longer incubation periods.

In 1959, Erdős and Rényi defined the foundational model of random graphs on n vertices, denoted G(n, p) ([ER84]). Microscopic fractional anisotropy (µFA) is a diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) metric that is sensitive to neuron microstructural features without being confounded by the orientation dispersion of axons and dendrites. µFA may potentially act as a surrogate biomarker for neurodegeneration, demyelination, and other pathological changes to neuron microstructure with greater specificity than other dMRI techniques that are sensitive to orientation dispersion, such as diffusion tensor imaging. In this work, I make a quantitative and mineralogical comparison of Howardite-EuctriteDiogenite (HED) meteorites with terrestrial samples from the Bushveld Igneous Complex (BIC) to assess how geophysical surveys of 4 Vesta or of V-type asteroids could detect BIClike ore deposits. Petrophysical methods in this work include bulk and grain density, derived porosity (using helium pycnometry, the Archimedean method, and X-ray micro-computed tomography), magnetic susceptibility, induced polarization and resistivity, and P-wave velocity. These maps are important tools for regional decision making for technical (engineering) and non-technical (planning, emergency management, insurance) applications. The velocity variances, Reynolds shear stress, and turbulent kinetic energy are found to be larger than in a similar idealized street canyon model.
