Photovoltaic System Optimization For An Austere Location Using Time Series Data, Torrey J. Wagner, Eric Lang, Warren Assink, Douglas S. Dudis

In this work we test experimental photovoltaic, storage and generator technologies and investigate their potential to meet austere location energy needs. After defining the energy requirements and insolation of a 1,100-person base, we develop a microgrid model and simulation. Cost optimizations were then performed using hourly time-series data to explore the cost and performance trade-space of a PV-battery-generator system. The work highlights the cost of resiliency and the dependencies of optimum system component sizes on duration and the fully burdened cost of fuel.

The extensive release of oil during the 2010 Deepwater Horizon spill in the northern Gulf of Mexico perturbed the pelagic ecosystem and associated sinking material. To gauge the recovery and post-spill baseline sources, we measured D14C, d13C and d34S of sinking particles near the spill site and at a reference site and natural seep site. Particulates were collected August 2010–April 2016 in sediment traps moored at sites with depths of 1160–1660 m. Near the spill site, changes in D14C indicated a 3-year recovery period, while d34S indicated 1–2 years, which agreed with estimates of 1–2 years based on hydrocarbon composition. …

Nearly Defect-Free Dynamical Models Of Disordered Solids: The Case Of Amorphous Silicon, Raymond Atta-Fynn, Parthapratim Biswas

It is widely accepted in the materials modeling community that defect-free realistic networks of amorphous silicon cannot be prepared by quenching from a molten state of silicon using classical or ab initio molecular-dynamics (MD) simulations. In this work, we address this long-standing problem by producing nearly defect-free ultra-large models of amorphous silicon, consisting of up to half a million atoms, using classical MD simulations. The structural, topological, electronic, and vibrational properties of the models are presented and compared with experimental data. As society becomes more dependent upon computer systems to perform increasingly critical tasks, ensuring that those systems do not fail becomes increasingly important. Many organizations depend heavily on desktop computers for day-to-day operations. Unfortunately, the software that runs on these computers is written by humans and, as such, is still subject to human error and consequent failure. A natural solution is to use statistical machine learning to predict failure. An additive coloring of a graph G is a labeling of the vertices of G from {1,2,...,k} such that two adjacent vertices have distinct sums of labels on their neighbors. The least integer k for which a graph G has an additive coloring is called the additive coloring number of G, denoted \luck(G). Additive coloring is also studied under the names lucky labeling and open distinguishing. Quantifying links between pyOM dynamics, environmental factors and processes is central to predicting ecosystem function and response to future perturbations. In this study, changes in carbon (TC), nitrogen (TN), pH, and relative recalcitrance (R50) for pineand cordgrass-derived pyOM were measured at 3–6 weeks intervals throughout the first year of burial in the soil. Objectives were to (1) identify key environmental factors and processes driving early-stage pyOM dynamics, and (2) develop quantitative relationships between environmental factors and observed changes in pyOM properties. The systems of reaction-diffusion equations coupled with moving boundaries defined by Stefan condition have been widely used to describe the dynamics of spreading population and with competition of two species. To solve these systems numerically, new numerical challenges arise from the competition of two species due to the interaction of their free boundaries. We present a computational study of small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) in amorphous silicon (α-Si) with particular emphasis on the morphology and microstructure of voids. The relationship between the scattering intensity in SAXS and the three-dimensional structure of nanoscale inhomogeneities or voids is addressed by generating large high-quality (α-Si networks with 0.1%–0.3% volume concentration of voids, as observed in experiments using SAXS and positron annihilation spectroscopy. A systematic study of the variation of the scattering intensity in the small-angle scattering region with the size, shape, number density, and the spatial distribution of the voids in the networks is presented. Ballistic electron emission microscopy (BEEM) has been used to study the processes affecting electron transport along the [0001] direction of finite layer MoS2 flakes deposited onto the surface of Au/Si(001) Schottky diodes. Prominent features present in the differential spectra from the MoS2 flakes are consistent with the density of states of finite layer MoS2 calculated using density functional theory. The ability to observe the electronic structure of the MoS2 appears to be due to the relatively smooth density of states of Si in this energy range and a substantial amount of elastic or quasi-elastic scattering along the MoS2/Au/Si(001) path. We derive closed-form particular solutions for Helmholtz-type partial differential equations. These are derived explicitly using the Matern basis functions. The derivation of such particular solutions is further extended to the cases of products of Helmholtz-type operators in two and three dimensions. The main idea of the paper is to link the derivation of the particular solutions to the known fundamental solutions of certain differential operators. The newly derived particular solutions are used, in the context of the method of particular solutions, to solve boundary value problems governed by a certain class of products of Helmholtz-type equations. The magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of iron-substituted Co2VGa alloys, Co2-xFexVGa (x = 0, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, 0.3), were investigated. The Fe-substituted samples, prepared by arc melting, melt spinning, and annealing, crystallized in the L2(1) Heusler structure, without any secondary phases. The Curie temperature and high-field magnetization at 50 K decreased from 345 K and 44 emu/g (1.90 mu(B)/f.u.) for Co2VGa to 275 K and 39 emu/g (1.66 mu(B)/f.u.) for Co1.7Fe0.3VGa, respectively, but the maximum entropy change remained almost insensitive to Fe concentration for x 1.85Fe0.15VGa. We present observational constraints on the stellar populations of two ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) using optical through near-infrared (NIR) spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting. Our analysis is enabled by new Spitzer-IRAC 3.6 and 4.5 μm imaging, archival optical imaging, and the prospectorfully Bayesian SED fitting framework. Our sample contains one field UDG (DGSAT I), one Virgo cluster UDG (VCC 1287), and one Virgo cluster dwarf elliptical for comparison (VCC 1122). We find that the optical–NIR colors of the three galaxies are significantly different from each other. We infer that VCC 1287 has an old (7.7 Gyr) and surprisingly metal-poor …

The recent discovery of massive black holes (BHs) in the centers of high-mass ultra-compact dwarf galaxies (UCDs) suggests that at least some are the stripped nuclear star clusters of dwarf galaxies. We present the first study that investigates whether such massive BHs, and therefore stripped nuclei, also exist in low-mass (M < 107 M ⊙) UCDs. We constrain the BH masses of two UCDs located in Centaurus A (UCD 320 and UCD 330) using Jeans modeling of the resolved stellar kinematics from adaptive optics data obtained with the SINFONI integral field spectrograph at the Very Large Telescope (VLT/SINFONI). This article describes how to use the python refl library in https://bitbucket.org/steve_turley/reflectance-fitting to fit thin film reflectance data from the Advanced Light Source (ALS) at Lawrence Berkeley National Labs. It uses data taken for a thin film of aluminum capped by a thin film of aluminum fluoride on a silicon nitride substrate. The single fit in the example shown here shows the importance of taking into account the oxidation of the aluminum layer as part of the fit.

Applying deep learning methods to electroencephalograph (EEG) data for cognitive state assessment has yielded improvements over previous modeling methods. However, research focused on cross-participant cognitive workload modeling using these techniques is underrepresented. We study the problem of cross-participant state estimation in a non-stimulus-locked task environment, where a trained model is used to make workload estimates on a new participant who is not represented in the training set. The validation of structural health monitoring (SHM) systems for aircraft is complicated by the extent and number of factors that the SHM system must demonstrate for robust performance. Therefore, a time- and cost-efficient method for examining all of the sensitive factors must be conducted. Seafloor sediment resuspension events of different scales and magnitudes and the resulting deep (>1,000 m) benthic nepheloid layers were investigated in the northern Gulf of Mexico during Fall 2012 to Summer 2013. Time-series data of size-specific in-situ settling speeds of marine snow in the benthic nepheloid layer (moored flux cameras), particle size distributions (profiling camera), currents (various current meters) and stacked time-series flux data (sediment traps) were combined to recognize resuspension events ranging from small-scale local, to small-scale far-field to hurricane-scale. Coastal river-dominated oceans are physically complex, biologically productive, and intimately connected to human socioeconomic activity. The Deepwater Horizon blowout and subsequent advection of oil into coastal waters of the northern Gulf of Mexico (nGOM) highlighted the complex linkages among oceanographic processes within this river-dominated system and knowledge gaps about it that resulted in imprecise information on both oil transport and ecosystem consequences. The pairing symmetry of interacting Dirac fermions on the π-flux lattice is studied with the determinant quantum Monte Carlo and numerical linked-cluster expansion methods. The s∗- (i.e., extended s-) and d-wave pairing symmetries, which are distinct in the conventional square lattice, are degenerate under the Landau gauge. We demonstrate that the dominant pairing channel at strong interactions is an unconventional ds∗-wave phase consisting of alternating stripes of s∗- and d-wave phases. A complementary mean-field analysis shows that while the s∗- and d-wave symmetries individually have nodes in the energy spectrum, the ds∗ channel is fully gapped. The results represent a …

We check the stability of the ABMP16 fit with respect to modifications of quark PDFs suggested in the recent literature: the strange sea enhancement and a positive non-vanishing d/u ratio at x → 1. These possibilities are examined using test versions of the ABMP16 PDF fit which demonstrate no need of those changes. Furthermore, we localize peculiar features in other analyses which are responsible for a different behaviour of the PDFs obtained. The strange sea enhancement can be explained by a choice of the PDF shapes being not flexible enough and therefore leading to an over-suppressed d-quark distribution. This …

We recently found an ultra diffuse galaxy (UDG) with a half-light radius of R e = 2.2 kpc and little or no dark matter. The total mass of NGC1052–DF2 was measured from the radial velocities of bright compact objects that are associated with the galaxy. Here, we analyze these objects using a combination of Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging and Keck spectroscopy. Their average size is pc and their average ellipticity is . From a stacked Keck spectrum we derive an age of 9 Gyr and a metallicity of [Fe/H] = −1.35 ± 0.12. Their properties are similar to ωCentauri, …

Twinning Strains In Synfolding Calcite, Proterozoic Sinian System, China, John P. Craddock, Junlai Liu, Yuanyuan Zheng

Synfolding calcite was precipitated between layers of Neoproterozoic sandy dolomite and striated parallel to the fold axis of an open anticline with a shallow plunge during folding. The fold had limb dips of 45° and plunged 20° to the south. The synfolding calcite had sub-horizontal grooves that trended parallel to the fold. Limb-hinge-limb calcite samples (3 samples; n = 100 grains) preserved a layer-parallel shortening strain that trended at an acute (45°) angle to the trend of the fold axis and fold lineations. Meet Whitney Coyle Welcome to the second installment of our new Sound Perspectives series “Ask an Acoustician.” This article highlights Whitney Coyle, an assistant professor at Rollins College, Winter Park, Florida (rollins.edu). Whitney represents the musical acoustics field. She received her BS from Murray State University, Murray, Kentucky, in the fields of music and mathematics. She then went on to Pennsylvania State University, University Park, for her MS and PhD in acoustics. Reference Dependence Of The Two-Determinant Coupled-Cluster Method For Triplet And Open-Shell Singlet States Of Biradical Molecules, Jesse J. Lutz, Marcel Nooijen, Ajith Perera, Rodney J. Bartlett

We study the performance of the two-determinant (TD) coupled-cluster (CC) method which, unlike conventional ground-state single-reference (SR) CC methods, can, in principle, provide a naturally spin-adapted treatment of the lowest-lying open-shell singlet (OSS) and triplet electronic states. Various choices for the TD-CC reference orbitals are considered, including those generated by the multi-configurational self-consistent field method. Comparisons are made with the results of high-level SR-CC, equation-of-motion (EOM) CC, and multi-reference EOM calculations performed on a large test set of over 100 molecules with low-lying OSS states. Wearable technology allows users to monitor their activity and pursue a healthy lifestyle through the use of embedded sensors. Such wearables usually connect to a mobile application that allows them to set their profile and keep track of their goals. However, due to the relatively “high maintenance” of such applications, where a significant amount of user feedback is expected, users who are very busy, or not as self-motivated, stop using them after a while. CONCORDE is the CONsortium for oil spill exposure pathways in COastal River-Dominated Ecosystems (CONCORDE), and is an interdisciplinary research program funded by the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI) to conduct scientific studies of the impacts of oil, dispersed oil and dispersant on the Gulf’s ecosystem (Greer et al. 2018). A CONCORDE goal is to implement a synthesis model containing circulation and biogeochemistry components of the Northern Gulf of Mexico shelf system which can ultimately aid in prediction of oil spill transport and impacts.
