The overexpression of protein phosphatase 5 has been correlated to tumor cell reproduction making it a candidate for small molecule drug therapy. Selective and potent inhibition of protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) enzyme has been previously achieved through the development of the molecule fostriecin with key functionality being a lactone and unsaturated linear chain. The large synthetic overhead of fostriecin has led to exploration of other small molecule inhibitors that could mirror fostriecin’s interaction with the active site in the catalytic domain of PP5. Shewanella woodyi is a bioluminescent marine organism that is known to be metal tolerant and modulate the intensity of its luminescence with electrochemical potential. The viability of S. woodyi as a bioreporter for the toxic heavy metal zinc, copper, and silver was analyzed. Biofilms of S. woodyi was grown on marine broth agar plates and then exposed to various concentrations of each metal ion to evaluate biofilm response to the metal ions that were generated from an operating short circuited electrode containing either Zn, Cu, or Ag metal. Diisopropylamonium bromide is an organic ferroelectric compound. Standard sample preparation methods either require a powder or a single crystal. Certain measurements cannot be done on powders due to equipment limitations, and single crystals are difficult and time consuming to produce and handle. Cold sintering is a relatively new process that allows the creation of ceramics. The original cold sintering process was adapted to work for diisopropylamonium bromide. This allows the creation of ceramics with a large surface area. These pellets can achieve up to 95% of the theoretical maximum density. The budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is an effective model for studying cellular aging. We can measure the lifespan of yeast cells in two ways: replicative and chronological lifespans. Chronological focuses on the time that a cell can survive. The replicative lifespan (RLS) is the number of cell divisions that a single mother cell can go through before ceases to be dividing. RLS is a measurement of individual cells and is more informative on the aging process than in chronological lifespan. These locations are relatively rural, with many of their citizens reporting low incomes and lacking education, the majority of which are unaware of the risk of arsenic poisoning. Over one billion automobiles are in use around the world, the majority of which employ internal combustion engines. Catalytic converters are used to convert the toxic compounds found in car exhaust -- carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides (NOx) and hydrocarbons -- to less harmful gases. The typical catalytic converter employs as catalysts expensive raw materials (platinum, palladium and/or rhodium) wash-coated onto an alumina-based ceramic substrate. Aerogel materials have high surface area and thermal stability, properties that make them attractive for catalysis applications. The use of stable water isotopes (𝛿2H and 𝛿18O) as natural tracers through the water cycle has provided a unique observational technique for characterizing hydrological processes and establishing connections between water distribution systems and their respective environmental sources. The Ullmann ether synthesis is a reaction that couples aryl halides to aliphatic alcohols. It works best with aryl iodides because the aryl bromides are much less reactive, and aryl chlorides are even more so. A Finkelstein type halogen exchange reaction has been shown to effectively substitute iodide for bromide on aryl bromides with high yields. The goal of this project is to develop a one pot halogen exchange, Ullmann coupling reaction to allow for aryl bromides to be coupled successfully to aliphatic alcohols. Color is one of the most important properties analyzed during forensic fiber examinations due to its discriminatory power. Differing colors in fibers are usually sufficient grounds for exclusion, but in cases where a lengthy period has passed between crime commission and evidence recovery, the high probability of environmental degradation having altered the questioned fibers’ properties could lead to false exclusions. Neozanthopsis Americana is a crab from the middle Eocene Claiborne Group that lived along the Gulf of Mexico, and has been documented in Texas and Louisiana. This species was discovered by Rathburn (1928) and was later amended and added to by Schweitzer (2014). The specimens in this paper are found near Natchitoches, Louisiana, and along with their accompanying fossils are used to describe the depositional environment of the locality. Sediments were taken from the site and analyzed under a standard microscope for microfossils, which were collected and further analyzed under scanning electron microscope. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a hereditary disease in which the myocardium becomes hypertrophied, making it more difficult for the heart to pump blood. HCM is commonly caused by a mutation in the β-cardiac myosin II heavy chain. Myosin is a motor protein that facilitates muscle contraction by converting chemical energy from ATP hydrolysis into mechanical work and concomitantly moving along actin filaments. Optical tweezers have been used previously to analyze single myosin biophysical properties; however, myosin does not work as a single unit within the heart. Major Depressive disorder (MDD) plagues society and stands at the forefront of research as MDD affects approximately 16% of the population. Pharmaceutical drugs, including the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), have been used for MDD treatment and remain a popular option today. However, current antidepressant treatments have proven to be ineffective in just less than half of the patients. Research continues with the goal to better understand the mechanisms of the pathology of depression and to search for other treatment options. Plants produce biologically active compounds that humans have utilized for many agricultural applications. Amyris elemifera was investigated due to the known bioactivity of its family, Rutaceae, and its use in medicines in tribes of the Bahamas. Biotage® and TLC guided fractionation of the EtOAc, hexane, and MeOH extracts of the leaves of Amyris elemifera yielded bioactive compounds. Most significantly, a novel furanocoumarin, 8-(3-methylbut-2-enyloxy)-marmesin acetate (1), and its analog 8-(3-methylbut-2-enyloxy)-marmesin (2), were isolated. Substituents are capable of affecting their molecules via induction, resonance, and field effects. Using the Hammett equation, the effect a range of substituents has on different properties of a molecule can be quantified.1 Hammett’s parameters have been correlated with the substituent effects on 1H NMR chemical shifts in different molecules, including experiments on substituted chalcones (1,3-diarylpropenones).2 The effect a substituent has on a molecule can also be observed using 13C NMR. This device uses the Ultrasonic Doppler system to extract the heel-contact and toe-off times of a person walking within the range of 2-10 meters.
