The Impact Of The 515nm Effect On 1o2 Quenching In Photosynthesis: Model System Studies Using Β-Carotene–Acid Complexes, Lauren A. Hoody Apr 2018

The Impact Of The 515nm Effect On 1o2 Quenching In Photosynthesis: Model System Studies Using Β-Carotene–Acid Complexes, Lauren A. Hoody

Honors Theses

β-carotene (βC) is an orange pigment present in the photosynthetic reaction center (PRC) of green plants, where it plays a vital role in photosynthesis: It quenches singlet oxygen (1O2 , a toxic oxidizing species generated during photosynthesis) before the 1O2 damages chlorophyll and other components of the PRCs. During photosynthesis, βC temporarily converts from its native orange–450 state to a pink–515 state via the so–called 515nm Effect. Because of the differences between the electronic structures of orange–450 and pink–515, I hypothesize that pink–515 will quench 1O2 less efficiently than orange–450. This hypothesis has not been tested to date because orange–450 …

Probabilistic Modeling Of Student Interactions During A Passing Period At The University Of Dayton, Allyson Pacifico

Honors Theses

The University of Dayton is composed of five colleges and schools: College of Arts and Sciences, School of Law, School of Business Administration, School of Education and Health Sciences, and School of Engineering. The University of Dayton is composed of about 11,000 students on campus who all have distinct class schedules and paths they take between their classes. In this study, I wanted to know the probability of meeting my friends with a different class schedule as I walk between classes. The data consisted of one to two students from each college, except for the School of Law, who documented …

Revising The Geological Time Scale: A Conop9 Graptolite Composite From The Middle Ordovician Rocks Of Newfoundland, Katherine Michel Apr 2018

Revising The Geological Time Scale: A Conop9 Graptolite Composite From The Middle Ordovician Rocks Of Newfoundland, Katherine Michel

Honors Theses

The Geological Time Scale is a fundamental tool for geoscientists that is revised and republished every eight years. It is a representation of the geologic record - a system composed of radioisotope dates interpolated into fossil successions that can be used to correlate rocks. The current Geologic Time Scale for the Ordovician Period (GTS 2012) is composed of a sequence of species ranges from a group of fossils called graptolites with interpolated radiometric dates. Building a global geologic time scale requires correlating between different biofacies.

In this thesis I will attempt to combine stratigraphic range data from different kinds of …

Introduction To Computational Topology Using Simplicial Persistent Homology, Jason Turner, Brenda Johnson, Ellen Gasparovic Mar 2018

Introduction To Computational Topology Using Simplicial Persistent Homology, Jason Turner, Brenda Johnson, Ellen Gasparovic

Honors Theses

The human mind has a natural talent for finding patterns and shapes in nature where there are none, such as constellations among the stars. Persistent homology serves as a mathematical tool for accomplishing the same task in a more formal setting, taking in a cloud of individual points and assembling them into a coherent continuous image. We present an introduction to computational topology as well as persistent homology, and use them to analyze configurations of BuckyBalls®, small magnetic balls commonly used as desk toys.

A Better Way To Construct Tensegrities: Planar Embeddings Inform Tensegrity Assembly, Elizabeth Anne Ricci Mar 2018

A Better Way To Construct Tensegrities: Planar Embeddings Inform Tensegrity Assembly, Elizabeth Anne Ricci

Honors Theses

Although seemingly simple, tensegrity structures are complex in nature which makes them both ideal for use in robotics and difficult to construct. We work to develop a protocol for constructing tensegrities more easily. We consider attaching a tensegrity's springs to the appropriate locations on some planar arrangement of attached struts. Once all of the elements of the structure are connected, we release the struts and allow the tensegrity to find its equilibrium position. This will allow for more rapid tensegrity construction. We develop a black-box that given some tensegrity returns a flat-pack, or the information needed to perform this physical …

Schubert Polynomial Multiplication, Sara Amato Jan 2018

Schubert Polynomial Multiplication, Sara Amato

Honors Theses

Schur polynomials are a fundamental object in the field of algebraic combinatorics. The product of two Schur polynomials can be written as a sum of Schur polynomials using non-negative integer coefficients. A simple combinatorial algorithm for generating these coefficients is called the Littlewood-Richardson Rule. Schubert polynomials are generalizations of the Schur polynomials. Schubert polynomials also appear in many contexts, such as in algebraic combinatorics and algebraic geometry. It is known from algebraic geometry that the product of two Schubert polynomials can be written as a sum of Schubert polynomials using non-negative integer coefficients. However, a simple combinatorial algorithm for generating …

Project Emerald: Designing A Language To Be Fun, Addison Bostian Jan 2018

Project Emerald: Designing A Language To Be Fun, Addison Bostian

Honors Theses

I designed the language described here to be, first and foremost, fun. I wanted it to be a programmer's go-to language, the language that you pick up for personal projects or utilities. I felt the way to make this happen was to make it fun to write in. In order to accomplish this, the language derives from several existing languages, taking what I believed were the best parts of each of them. Combining principles from multiple languages sounds like a good idea, I quickly ran into problems that would make developing a compiler extremely difficult, if not impossible. Because of …

Calcic Paleosols In A Stratigraphic Context From Quaggasfontein, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa: Correlations In The Wapadsberg Pass Area And Implications For Late Permian Climate, Kaci B. Kus Jan 2018

Calcic Paleosols In A Stratigraphic Context From Quaggasfontein, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa: Correlations In The Wapadsberg Pass Area And Implications For Late Permian Climate, Kaci B. Kus

Honors Theses

The Karoo Basin, South Africa, contains a reportedly continuous stratigraphic record spanning the terrestrial vertebrate extinction event equated with the Permian-Triassic boundary (PTB) in the marine record. The current hypothesis links this major loss in biodiversity and vertebrate turnover to a global change in climate towards aridification. Rapid climate change is interpreted to be reflected in continental rocks by a changeover from (1) greenish (Permian) to reddish (Triassic) mudrock, (2) a transition in the river architectures from meandering to braided regimes, and (3) wetland to calcic-bearing paleosols. Here, we present geochemical results on a 1.3-meter calcic paleoVertisol interval found ~34 …

Presence And Potential Sources Of Pharmaceutical And Personal Care Product Chemicals In Messalonskee Lake, Alyssa T. Kullberg Jan 2018

Presence And Potential Sources Of Pharmaceutical And Personal Care Product Chemicals In Messalonskee Lake, Alyssa T. Kullberg

Honors Theses

Pharmaceuticals and personal care product chemicals (PPCPs) represent a large group of contaminants that are mostly not regulated in surface or drinking water and whose presence and environmental and health impacts are poorly understood. We investigated the presence and potential sources of 18 PPCPs in Messalonskee Lake. We collected samples four times over the summer of 2017 at 13 sites around the lake. Samples were tested for PPCPs using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. We detected five out of the 18 PPCPs we tested for at the ng/L level: caffeine, 1,7-dimethylxanthine, acetaminophen, sulfachloropyridazine, and amphetamine. PPCPs showed a significant positive correlation …

Geochemical Differences In Calcic Horizons Due To Parent Material And Anthropogenic Water Input In Southeastern Arizona, Alicia Fischer Jan 2018

Geochemical Differences In Calcic Horizons Due To Parent Material And Anthropogenic Water Input In Southeastern Arizona, Alicia Fischer

Honors Theses

Calcic soil horizons are significant carbon sinks. Yet, despite their abundance in semiarid environments, calcic soils are enigmatic for two reasons: (1) some authors hypothesize that dust input does not, independently, control the geochemical properties of these soils; and (2) few studies have examined how these calcic soils change geochemically with respect to irrigation. A 2017 pilot study used portable x-ray fluorescence (pXRF) on calcic soils in Southeastern Arizona (SEAZ) to address these questions. However, this technology has not been widely employed to evaluate soils. The current study addresses whether pXRF and XRF data obtained from the same soil samples …

Mechanism Design, Matching Theory And The Stable Roommates Problem, Yashaswi Mohanty Jan 2018

Mechanism Design, Matching Theory And The Stable Roommates Problem, Yashaswi Mohanty

Honors Theses

This thesis consists of two independent albeit related chapters. The first chapter introduces concepts from mechanism design and matching theory, and discusses potential applications of this theory, particularly in relation to dorm allocations in colleges. The second chapter investigates a subset of the dorm allocation problem, namely that of matching roommates. In particular, the paper looks at the probability of solvability of random instances of the stable roommates game under the condition that preferences are not completely random and exogenous but endogenously determined through a dependence on room choice. These probabilities are estimated using Monte-Carlo simulations and then compared with …

On Spectral Theorem, Muyuan Zhang Jan 2018

On Spectral Theorem, Muyuan Zhang

Honors Theses

There are many instances where the theory of eigenvalues and eigenvectors has its applications. However, Matrix theory, which usually deals with vector spaces with finite dimensions, also has its constraints. Spectral theory, on the other hand, generalizes the ideas of eigenvalues and eigenvectors and applies them to vector spaces with arbitrary dimensions. In the following chapters, we will learn the basics of spectral theory and in particular, we will focus on one of the most important theorems in spectral theory, namely the spectral theorem. There are many different formulations of the spectral theorem and they convey the "same" idea. In …

Parametric Polynomials For Small Galois Groups, Claire Huang Jan 2018

Parametric Polynomials For Small Galois Groups, Claire Huang

Honors Theses

Galois theory, named after French mathematician Evariste Galois in 19th-century, is an important part of abstract algebra. It brings together many different branches of mathematics by providing connections among fields, polynomials, and groups.

Specifically, Galois theory allows us to attach a finite field extension with a finite group. We call such a group the Galois group of the finite field extension. A typical way to attain a finite field extension to compute the splitting field of some polynomial. So we can always start with a polynomial and find the finite group associate to the field extension on its splitting field. …

Algebraic Number Theory And Simplest Cubic Fields, Jianing Yang Jan 2018

Algebraic Number Theory And Simplest Cubic Fields, Jianing Yang

Honors Theses

The motivation behind this paper lies in understanding the meaning of integrality in general number fields. I present some important definitions and results in algebraic number theory, as well as theorems and their proofs on cyclic cubic fields. In particular, I discuss my understanding of Daniel Shanks' paper on the simplest cubic fields and their class numbers.

Silicon And Tin Substituted Halocyclopropanes: Approaches To New Carbenes And Strained Cyclic Allenes, Noura Srour Jan 2018

Silicon And Tin Substituted Halocyclopropanes: Approaches To New Carbenes And Strained Cyclic Allenes, Noura Srour

Honors Theses

Chloro(trimethylsilyl)carbene and chloro(trimethylstannyl)carbene were generated through photolysis of cyclopropanated phenanthrene precursors which were synthesized in two steps. The photolysis reactions were done in the presence of cis and/or trans-beta-methylstyrene. Though product peaks corresponding to the carbene-alkene adducts were observed in the GCMS, the yields were too low for their isolation and complete characterization. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed on the stereoisomers of the precursor to Chloro(trimethylsilyl)carbene and the carbene itself. Surprisingly, Chloro(trimethylsilyl)carbene’s triplet state was found to be more stable than the singlet at this level of theory.

In a related project, (1-bromo-1a,9b-dihydro-1H-cyclopropa[l]phenanthren-1-yl)trimethylstannane, was …

Stable Bromine Isotope Signature Of Bromoform From Enzymatic And Abiotic Formation Pathways And Its Application In Identifying Sources Of Environmental Bromoform In The Damariscotta River, Chengyang Wang Jan 2018

Stable Bromine Isotope Signature Of Bromoform From Enzymatic And Abiotic Formation Pathways And Its Application In Identifying Sources Of Environmental Bromoform In The Damariscotta River, Chengyang Wang

Honors Theses

Bromoform is a major source of atmospheric bromine. Most bromoform is produced by marine organisms including macroalgae and phytoplankton, using the enzyme bromoperoxidase (BPO). Bromoform can also be a byproduct of industrial processes such as water disinfection. Identifying sources of environmental bromoform is still a challenge. A novel technique of using quadrupole mass spectrometry coupled to a gas chromatography (GCqMS) was developed and optimized for Br isotope analyses. The study shows that GCqMS in single ion monitoring (SIM) mode can measure 81Br with precision of around ±0.7‰ (60pmol bromoform injected). This study aims to investigate stable Br isotopes of bromoform …

Assessing Specificity Of Indazole Derivatives As Inhibitors To Cyp2e1, Hannah Hart Jan 2018

Assessing Specificity Of Indazole Derivatives As Inhibitors To Cyp2e1, Hannah Hart

Honors Theses

Metabolism of drugs in the human body can yield both desirable and undesirable results. Some of these side-effects are due to drug-drug interactions, drug-diet interactions, or lack of drug specificity. The enzymes that drugs attack are structurally selective and complex; therefore, many drugs are very general in structure and could possibly react with a variety of enzymes. Indazole has been used as a backbone for several drugs as it has the general structure that may react with most P450s. To determine a derivative, or a group of derivatives, of indazole that may be reactive only with cytochrome P450 2El (CYP2El), …

Analysis Of A Custom Support Vector Machine For Photometric Redshift Estimation And The Inclusion Of Galaxy Shape Information, Evan Jones, J. Singal Jan 2018

Analysis Of A Custom Support Vector Machine For Photometric Redshift Estimation And The Inclusion Of Galaxy Shape Information, Evan Jones, J. Singal

Honors Theses

Aims. We present a custom support vector machine classification package for photometric redshift estimation, including comparisons with other methods. We also explore the efficacy of including galaxy shape information in redshift estimation. Support vector machines, a type of machine learning, utilize optimization theory and supervised learning algorithms to construct predictive models based on the information content of data in a way that can treat different input features symmetrically, which can be a useful estimator of the information contained in additional features beyond photometry, such as those describing the morphology of galaxies.

Methods. The custom support vector machine package we have …

Extensions Of The Morse-Hedlund Theorem, Eben Blaisdell Jan 2018

Extensions Of The Morse-Hedlund Theorem, Eben Blaisdell

Honors Theses

Bi-infinite words are sequences of characters that are infinite forwards and backwards; for example "...ababababab...". The Morse-Hedlund theorem says that a bi-infinite word f repeats itself, in at most n letters, if and only if the number of distinct subwords of length n is at most n. Using the example, "...ababababab...", there are 2 subwords of length 3, namely "aba" and "bab". Since 2 is less than 3, we must have that "...ababababab..." repeats itself after at most 3 letters. In fact it does repeat itself every two letters. …

Launch-Explore-Summarize In High School Calculus, Nate Mattis Jan 2018

Launch-Explore-Summarize In High School Calculus, Nate Mattis

Honors Theses

Current research on high school calculus instruction indicates that students often possess a procedural knowledge of differentiation and integration as opposed to a conceptual knowledge (Orton, 1983; Ferrini-Mundy & Graham, 1994). Given the prominence of traditional lecture and textbook-based calculus classes in the United States, students are not always given the opportunity to expand their conceptual knowledge of essential calculus concepts. This project introduces calculus students to a more active and communal method of teaching: Launch-Explore-Summarize (LES) (CMP, n.d.). This methodology places students at the center of their learning and emphasizes inquiry-based thinking during a class. Specifically, two LES lessons …

Correlation Of Sand Reservoirs Of The Lower Tuscaloosa Formation In The Smithdale And East Fork Fields In Amite County, Mississippi, Alexandra Warren Jan 2018

Correlation Of Sand Reservoirs Of The Lower Tuscaloosa Formation In The Smithdale And East Fork Fields In Amite County, Mississippi, Alexandra Warren

Honors Theses

The Upper Cretaceous Lower Tuscaloosa Formation has been a major hydrocarbon producer in southwest Mississippi since the 1940s, with discovered oil reserves in the billions of barrels. The mid-Cenomanian unconformity underlying the Lower Tuscaloosa created an extensive network of incised valleys. The transgressive sequences that occurred during the deposition of the Massive and Stringer Sand Members filled the incised valleys with sediments, due to the low accommodation space, and this created a series of stacked channel sand deposits. The Smithdale and East Fork oil fields located in Amite County, Mississippi produce from the Stringer Sand Member of the Lower Tuscaloosa. …
