Procedural Generation: An Algorithmic Analysis Of Video Game Design And Level Creation, Logan Bond Jan 2017

Procedural Generation: An Algorithmic Analysis Of Video Game Design And Level Creation, Logan Bond

Honors Theses

Procedural generation is a method for generating mass quantities of data algorithmically rather than manually. One perfect example of this is the recently famous No Man’s Sky, a video game where the entire marketing scheme was structured around its procedurally generated universe. The game’s trailer and advertisements promised its players 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 unique planets[1], all of which were procedurally generated. In other words, the developers did not create exclusive profiles for every single planet, but instead programmed the game in such a way that the planets were built from the code. This method of content creation is the …

Stacking Atomically Thin Materials, Hamilton Johnson Jan 2017

Stacking Atomically Thin Materials, Hamilton Johnson

Honors Theses

Atomically thin materials have been an exciting topic of research since graphene was first isolated in 2004. Due to their unique properties, a large amount of research has gone into these materials, but better methods of combining them are still being sought. We present three methods which were attempted for fabricating stacks of atomically thin (or 2D) materials without heating them to the high temperatures required by previous techniques. The first two methods were deemed unsuitable for various reasons, but the third was used to successfully create a stack of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) encapsulated molybdenum disulfide (MoS2). While the …

Normal Surfaces And 3-Manifold Algorithms, Josh D. Hews

Honors Theses

This survey will develop the theory of normal surfaces as they apply to the S3 recognition algorithm. Sections 2 and 3 provide necessary background on manifold theory. Section 4 presents the theory of normal surfaces in triangulations of 3-manifolds. Section 6 discusses issues related to implementing algorithms based on normal surfaces, as well as an overview of the Regina, a program that implements many 3-manifold algorithms. Finally section 7 presents the proof of the 3-sphere recognition algorithm and discusses how Regina implements the algorithm.

Some Examples Of The Interplay Between Algebra And Topology, Joseph D. Malionek Jan 2017

Some Examples Of The Interplay Between Algebra And Topology, Joseph D. Malionek

Honors Theses

This thesis presents several undergraduate and graduate level concepts in the fields of algebraic topology and topological group theory in a manner which requires very little mathematical background of the reader. It uses non-rigorous interpretations of concepts while introducing the reader to the rigorous ideas with which they are associated. In order to give the reader an idea of how the fields of algebra and topology are closely affiliated, the paper goes over five main concepts, the fundamental group, homology, cohomology, Eilenberg-Maclane spaces, and group dimension.

Tying The Knot: Applications Of Topology To Chemistry, Tarini S. Hardikar Jan 2017

Tying The Knot: Applications Of Topology To Chemistry, Tarini S. Hardikar

Honors Theses

Chirality (or handedness) is the property that a structure is “different” from its mirror image. Topology can be used to provide a rigorous framework for the notion of chirality. This project examines various types of chirality and discusses tools to detect chirality in graphs and knots. Notable theorems that are discussed in this work include ones that identify chirality using properties of link polynomials (HOMFLY polynomials), rigid vertex graphs, and knot linking numbers. Various other issues of chirality are explored, and some specially unique structures are discussed. This paper is borne out of reading Dr. Erica Flapan’s book, When Topology …

Correcting Pedestrian Dead Reckoning With Monte Carlo Localization Boxed For Indoor Navigation, Akira T. Murphy Jan 2017

Correcting Pedestrian Dead Reckoning With Monte Carlo Localization Boxed For Indoor Navigation, Akira T. Murphy

Honors Theses

Localization of phones is a ubiquitous part of the modern mobile electronics landscape. However, there are many situations where the current method of networked localization fails. A Pedestrian Dead Reckoning System where the location of the user is calculated by counting the steps and direction of the user was implemented as an iOS app with python for data analysis. A novel algorithm for wireless sensor localization using Ad-Hoc Bluetooth networks was proposed. A small experiment was performed proving that the system is nearly equal to state of the art algorithms.

America's National Parks And The Anthropocene: Addressing The Present To Accommodate The Future In Acadia National Park, Sophie A. Swetz Jan 2017

America's National Parks And The Anthropocene: Addressing The Present To Accommodate The Future In Acadia National Park, Sophie A. Swetz

Honors Theses

In 2000, atmospheric chemist, Paul J. Crutzen, and limnologist, Eugene Stoermer, formally proposed the idea of “the Anthropocene,” a new geologic epoch in which humans are the dominant force shaping the Earth. To claim the Anthropocene's existence is to declare that human actions have altered the Earth in such a way that geologic indicators render it a distinct epoch in the stratification of geologic time. This new epoch emerges as a consequence of increased technological development employed to accommodate an anthropocentric human existence. That is, rapid advancements in technology have driven the transformation from a primarily naturally controlled planet to …

I Remember It Like This: Essays, Robin C. Lewis Jan 2017

I Remember It Like This: Essays, Robin C. Lewis

Honors Theses

This thesis is composed of eleven personal essays. As an Environmental Policy senior, I wanted to write down some of my formative stories—not just any stories, but those that may reveal the environmental thread in my life, which, I believe, was somehow instilled in me by my parents. This thread has followed me from Texas to Maine, from childhood to almost twenty-three. It has been supported and tested by various characters along the way, sometimes growing faint, other times stronger. As I prepare for something new, I’ve found it valuable to look back on the people and landscapes and stories …

A Novel Method For Determination Of Ammonium Isotope Ratios With Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry, Rebecca J. Chmiel Jan 2017

A Novel Method For Determination Of Ammonium Isotope Ratios With Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry, Rebecca J. Chmiel

Honors Theses

Nitrogen (15N) isotope tracer studies are an invaluable tool for understanding the rate of N transformations in the environment. A mechanistic understanding of N cycling is critical to management of excess N availability in freshwater and marine ecosystems. Conventional methods for measuring 15N:14N of dissolved inorganic nitrogen species are time consuming and require large sample volumes. Here, we present a technique for measuring 15N:14N in ammonium (NH4+) using electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). NH4+ present in small volumes of sample (3 ml) is complexed with phenol via …

Photochemical Generation Of Carbenes And Ketenes From Phenanthrene-Based Precursors Part I: Dimethylalkylidene Part Ii: Diphenylketene, Tarini S. Hardikar, Tarini Hardikar Jan 2017

Photochemical Generation Of Carbenes And Ketenes From Phenanthrene-Based Precursors Part I: Dimethylalkylidene Part Ii: Diphenylketene, Tarini S. Hardikar, Tarini Hardikar

Honors Theses

Previous studies have shown that the photolysis of phenanthrene-based cyclopropyl precursors can generate carbenes. In this work, a novel phenanthrene precursor was synthesized and photolyzed to generate the dimethylalkylidene carbene, which was subsequently trapped by cyclohexene. The car- bene was not prone to an internal rearrangement as some other carbenes are, and instead favored the intermolecular addition reaction. The precursor also underwent a rearrangement via pericyclic processes. A theoretical analysis of the potential energy surface of the system is presented using coupled cluster and density functional methods. Preliminary analysis for the precursor via time-resolved laser flash photolysis (LFP) was performed. …

An Alternative Approach To Training Sequence-To-Sequence Model For Machine Translation, Vivek Sah Jan 2017

An Alternative Approach To Training Sequence-To-Sequence Model For Machine Translation, Vivek Sah

Honors Theses

Machine translation is a widely researched topic in the field of Natural Language Processing and most recently, neural network models have been shown to be very effective at this task. The model, called sequence-to-sequence model, learns to map an input sequence in one language to a vector of fixed dimensionality and then map that vector to an output sequence in another language without any human intervention provided that there is enough training data. Focusing on English-French translation, in this paper, I present a way to simplify the learning process by replacing English input sentences by word-by-word translation of those sentences. …

Quantum Groups And Knot Invariants, Greg A. Hamilton Jan 2017

Quantum Groups And Knot Invariants, Greg A. Hamilton

Honors Theses

Knot theory arguably holds claim to the title of the mathematical discipline with the most unusually diverse applications. A knot can be defined topologically as an embedding of S1 in R3. Naturally, two knots are topologically equivalent if one cannot be smoothly deformed into the other. The question of whether two knots are equivalent is highly non-trivial, and so the question of knot invariants used to distinguish knots has occupied knot theorists for over a century. Knot theory has found application in statistical mechanics [1], symbolic logic and set theory [2], quantum fi theory [3], quantum computing [4], etc. …

Differential Privacy For Growing Databases, Gi Heung (Robin) Kim Jan 2017

Differential Privacy For Growing Databases, Gi Heung (Robin) Kim

Honors Theses

Differential privacy [DMNS06] is a strong definition of database privacy that provides indi- viduals in a database with the guarantee that any particular person’s information has very little effect on the output of any analysis of the overall database. In order for this type of analysis to be practical, it must simultaneously preserve privacy and utility, where utility refers to how well the analysis describes the contents of the database.

An analyst may additionally wish to evaluate how a database’s composition changes over time. Consider a company, for example, that accumulates data from a growing base of customers. This company …

Differential Equations Models Of Pathogen-Induced Single- And Multi-Organ Tissue Damage, Fiona Lynch Jan 2017

Differential Equations Models Of Pathogen-Induced Single- And Multi-Organ Tissue Damage, Fiona Lynch

Honors Theses

The rise of antibiotic resistance has created a significant burden on healthcare systems around the world. Antibiotic resistance arises from the increased use of antibiotic drugs and antimicrobial agents, which kill susceptible bacterial strains, but have little effect on strains that have a mutation allowing them to survive antibiotic treatment, defined as “resistant” strains. With no non-resistant bacteria to compete for resources, the resistant bacteria thrives in this environment, continuing to reproduce and infect the host with an infection that does not respond to traditional antibiotic treatment.

A number of strategies have been proposed to tackle the problem of antibiotic …

Investigating Medicinally Important Portein-Protein And Protein-Ligand Interactions : A Computational Approach, Cooper Ashley Taylor Jan 2017

Investigating Medicinally Important Portein-Protein And Protein-Ligand Interactions : A Computational Approach, Cooper Ashley Taylor

Honors Theses

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and computational chemistry allow for an atomistic understanding of protein-protein and protein-ligand binding motifs. Through the use of MD, medicinally relevant complexes can be examined in detail unattainable by experimental methods. Within this work, systems pertinent to both Alzheimer’s Disease and HIV-1 are probed and thoroughly sampled to help elucidate potential therapeutic pathways. We used molecular dynamics and free energy estimations to gauge the affinity for the binary and ternary complexes of KLC1, APP and JIP1, three proteins all believed to be involved in the propagation of Alzheimer’s Disease. Two areas of thought exist suggesting that …

Toward A Scientific Investigation Of Convolutional Neural Networks, Anh Tran Jan 2017

Toward A Scientific Investigation Of Convolutional Neural Networks, Anh Tran

Honors Theses

This thesis does not assume the reader is familiar with artificial neural networks. However, to keep the thesis concise, it assumes the reader is familiar with the standard Machine Learning concepts of training set, validation set, and test set [1]. Their usage is intended to help ensure that the Machine Learning system can generalize its training from input examples used during its training to “similar” kinds of examples never used during its training.

The concept of a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is one of the most successful computational concepts today for solving image classification problems. However, CNNs are difficult and …

Study Of The Neutron Detection Efficiency Of The Clas12 Detector, Keegan Sherman Jan 2017

Study Of The Neutron Detection Efficiency Of The Clas12 Detector, Keegan Sherman

Honors Theses

One of the central physics goals of Jefferson Lab is to understand how quarks and gluons form nuclei. The 12 GeV upgrade is nearing completion and a new detector, CLAS12, is being built in Hall B. One of the approved experiments will measure the magnetic form factor of the neutron (Gn ). To make this measurement, the ratio of electron-neutron (e-n) to electron-proton (e-p) scattering events will be extracted from deuterium in quasi-elastic kinematics. A major source of systematic uncertainty is the neutron detection efficiency (NDE) of CLAS12. To better understand the NDE I used the Monte Carlo …

A New Almost Difference Set Construction, David Clayton Jan 2017

A New Almost Difference Set Construction, David Clayton

Honors Theses

This paper considers the appearance of almost difference sets in non-abelian groups. While numerous construction methods for these structures are known in abelian groups, little is known about ADSs in the case where the group elements do not commute. This paper presents a construction method for combining abelian difference sets into nonabelian almost difference sets, while also showing that at least one known almost difference set construction can be generalized to the nonabelian case.

The Ping-Pong Project, Adhithya Ravishankar Jan 2017

The Ping-Pong Project, Adhithya Ravishankar

Honors Theses

Table Tennis, more commonly referred to as ping pong, has been a sport of the elite for over two centuries since its inception in the late 1800s. However, coaching for this sport is not usually taught in most places, and many do not know how to play this sport. To democratize the sport, and make it more accessible to everyone, this program was designed to analyze a player's game and to give suggestions and recommendations to improve it. Using hard coded rules and tests, this program is designed to coach someone by detecting and measuring the speed and the spin …

Iodination Of 3,5-Dichloroanisole Using Silver Salts, Alex Fan Jan 2017

Iodination Of 3,5-Dichloroanisole Using Silver Salts, Alex Fan

Honors Theses

A paper published by Joshi et al. showed lower than expected yields in mono- and di-iodination of 3,5-dichloroanisole in dichloromethane using silver salts. One possibility for this could be that the starting material was being tri-iodinated and precipitating out of the solution. We used similar reaction conditions in attempts to prepare and isolate triiodinated product, but attempts of recrystallization from ethanol, DMSO, and 2- methoxyethanol showed no signs of it. Removal of silver iodide from the solids formed during the reaction using aqueous potassium iodide resulted in complete dissolution of the entire crude product, suggesting no organic product as well. …

Synthesis Of Cross-Conjugated Dibenzochrysene-Based Photosensitizers For Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells, Bailey Nicole Flamm Jan 2017

Synthesis Of Cross-Conjugated Dibenzochrysene-Based Photosensitizers For Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells, Bailey Nicole Flamm

Honors Theses

Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) represent a promising alternative method of energy generation. Absorbance of light across the visible spectrum and into the near-infrared (NIR) region is crucial to increasing the power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of DSC devices. Dye absorbance can be red-shifted by either increasing the conjugation path of the photosensitizer or by increasing the strength of electron donors and acceptors found in molecules. By using a polycyclic aromatic Ï€-bridge in a dye, lower energy wavelengths of light can be absorbed. Dibenzochrysene is a six-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) with substitutable positions that allow for a double-donor, double-acceptor (DD-Ï€-AA) structure, …

Isolation And Identification Of Bioactive Constituents Of Plant Pathogenic Fungi And Targeted Synthesis Of Isochromanone Analogs, Brandon Clausen Jan 2017

Isolation And Identification Of Bioactive Constituents Of Plant Pathogenic Fungi And Targeted Synthesis Of Isochromanone Analogs, Brandon Clausen

Honors Theses

An unknown fungal species was cultured from necrotic Brachiaria eruciformis leaves found in Oxford, Mississippi. The fungus was identified via molecular techniques as Pyricularia grisea. This fungus was grown on Czapek Dox broth culture medium for 21 days under continuous light at 24 0C. The culture filtrate was extracted with ethyl acetate and concentrated. The major bioactive compound, namely pyrichalasin H, was isolated using TLC-guided fractionation and identified via spectroscopic techniques. The compound was then tested for bioactivity on monocotyledons, dicotyledons and agriculturally important fungal species. Cellular leakage, chlorophyll content and root/shoot length bioassays were also performed to probe the …

A Study Of Conductance For A Random, Hierarchically-Structured Material, Daniel Salvador Jan 2017

A Study Of Conductance For A Random, Hierarchically-Structured Material, Daniel Salvador

Honors Theses

I consider a mathematical model for the conductance of a system formed by a hi- erarchical network of random bonds. My simulations show that the net conductance converges to a fixed number γ ≈ 0.35337 when the conductances of the bonds are num- bers selected uniformly at random from the interval (0,1). By linearly approximating the model around γ, I derive a new simplified model which I then study in rigorous mathematical detail. I prove a generalized central limit theorem for the new linearized system.

Cadmium Disruption Of Calcium-Dependent Dimerization Of Neural Cadherin, Dylan Ritter Jan 2017

Cadmium Disruption Of Calcium-Dependent Dimerization Of Neural Cadherin, Dylan Ritter

Honors Theses

Cadherins are a family of transmembrane proteins that dimerize to form junctions between cells in the presence of calcium. Due to the necessity for proper cell adhesion during cell differentiation in development, we are examining whether binding of other metallic divalent cations would disrupt calcium-sensitive dimerization of neural cadherin in vitro. Specifically, we are studying the effect of cadmium(II) on the linkage between calcium binding, dimerization, and dimer disassembly. Cadmium toxicity became recognized during the Industrial Revolution, with particular attention gained during the Itai-Itai disease outbreak in China during the 1910s. This toxicity, partnered with the role of cadherin in …

An Analysis Of The Acid Profile Of Coffee Brews: Caffeine And Chlorogenic Acid Concentrations In Different Forms Of Coffee Brew, Jeffory Taylor Wallace Jan 2017

An Analysis Of The Acid Profile Of Coffee Brews: Caffeine And Chlorogenic Acid Concentrations In Different Forms Of Coffee Brew, Jeffory Taylor Wallace

Honors Theses

In this project, different coffee brews were analyzed in order to determine the effects the brewing method had on the final product, particularly the acid profile of the final product. Our hypothesis is that the use of a cold brewing method will produce different amounts of caffeine and chlorogenic acids in the final brewed product compared to traditional hot brewing methods. There are many brewing methods available. For the purposes of this research, three were chosen and one was created. The three chosen methods were: a traditional drip brew, a cold brew, and a Pezzetti espresso brew. The final method …

Hinge Sequence Elements In Epithelial Cadherin Form And Function, Jessica Elizabeth Barnett Jan 2017

Hinge Sequence Elements In Epithelial Cadherin Form And Function, Jessica Elizabeth Barnett

Honors Theses

Cadherins play the vital role of mediating cell-cell adhesion in properly functioning tissues of the human body. Malfunction of these adherent cells can lead to drastic consequences like cancer metastasis. Thus, it is imperative to ensure the functionality of the molecular mechanism that drives these adhesive interactions. Of the various types, our studies specifically focused on the structure and function of the 'hinge region' in epithelial cadherin. This 'hinge region', composed of amino acid residues C9, P10, and E11, was of particular interest because it is the site of strand-swapped dimerization. The residues P10 and E11 are conserved within the …

A Raman Spectroscopic And Computational Study On The Effects Of Electron Withdrawing Groups On Halogen Bonding, Katelyn Allen Jan 2017

A Raman Spectroscopic And Computational Study On The Effects Of Electron Withdrawing Groups On Halogen Bonding, Katelyn Allen

Honors Theses

Here, the effects of individual electron withdrawing groups on halogen bond strength are investigated using Raman spectroscopy and electronic structure calculations. Halogen bonding is a unique and relatively unexplored noncovalent interaction that has recently garnered considerable attention due to its applications in materials development. When a halogen, such as chlorine, bromine, or iodine, accepts electron density from a Lewis base such as the nitrogen of pyridine a halogen bond arises. The anisotropic distribution of electron density about a covalently bound halogen, also known as the σ-hole, plays a significant role in halogen bond formation. The magnitude of the electropositive region …

Raman Spectroscopic Studies Of Novel Gold-Containing Nanomaterials, Lemuel Shui-Lun Tsang Jan 2017

Raman Spectroscopic Studies Of Novel Gold-Containing Nanomaterials, Lemuel Shui-Lun Tsang

Honors Theses

The thiolate-protected gold nanocluster (AuNP) Au38(SCH2CH2Ph)24 was studied using Raman spectroscopy with particular attention to the vibrational modes of the gold-sulfur interface. Such studies of AuNPs are non-trivial, as these materials are weak scatterers that burn and fluoresce readily. Previous works have successfully studied this class of materials using a rolling circle filter to subtract fluorescence backgrounds, but we set out to develop a method which would suppress fluorescence using more fundamental means. For Au38(SCH2CH2Ph)24, it was found that data acquisition was most effective using lower-energy excitation wavelengths, which could be predicted based on the UV-Vis absorption spectrum of the …
