Analysis Of Coal Fractions Using Dibromotriphenyl-Phosphorane: A Selective Ether Cleaving Reagent, Michael L. Ballard Jan 1981

Analysis Of Coal Fractions Using Dibromotriphenyl-Phosphorane: A Selective Ether Cleaving Reagent, Michael L. Ballard

Masters Theses

Dibromotriphenylphosphorane (DTP), in acetonitrile at 40°C, was found to cleave benzyl phenyl ether in preference to di-alkyl or other aryl alkyl ethers. Competition between 10 mmoles benzyl phenyl ether and 10 mmoles di-n-octyl ether for 0.92 mmole of DTP gave 48% cleavage of benzyl phenyl ether and 1.3% cleavage of di-n-octyl ether based on DTP. Reaction of benzyl phenyl ether and di-n-octyl ether separately with DTP at 40°C produced 80% and 8% cleavage, respectively. Reactions of DTP with diphenyl ether, butyl phenyl ether, phenyl cyclohexyl ether and benzyl benzoate at 40°C produced less than 3% cleavage in all cases.

Relationship Of Gravity Anomalies To A Drift Filled Bedrock Valley System In Calhoun County Michigan, James W. Farnsworth Dec 1980

Relationship Of Gravity Anomalies To A Drift Filled Bedrock Valley System In Calhoun County Michigan, James W. Farnsworth

Masters Theses

Gravity geophysics along with well data were used to delineate and map the locations of buried river valleys in Calhoun County, Michigan. The valleys are filled with thick sequences of glacial fluvial deposits which can serve as important aquifers.

One hundred and sixty-four gravimeter observations were made at approximately one-quarter mile intervals in a 35 square mile area. Four short-interval profiles were also established perpendicular to suspected valleys. A three-dimensional trend surface polynomial was fitted to the total Bouguer anomaly to approximate the regional effect of gravity. By comparing the observed residual gravity to theoretically derived anomalies, models were developed …

Petrologic, Mineralogic, And Ion Exchange Characteristics Of The Rome Formation And Pumpkin Valley Shale On The Oak Ridge National Laboratory Reservation, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, Janine Gajda Sledz

Masters Theses

Two outcrops of the Rome Formation and lower Conasauga Group, located on the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Reservation were studied with respect to their petrologic, mineralogic, and ion exchange characteristics. Twenty-eight sample pairs (a pair consisted of a fresh and weathered segment) were taken from each outcrop.

The agrillaceous samples were analyzed by x-ray diffraction and the remaining samples by thin section analysis. Using an ammonia electrode, CEC values were determined for all argillaceous samples and selected non-argillaceous samples. Porosity determinations of the fresh segments of the sandstones and siltstones were made, using 100to 12 micron thick petrographic sections.

Variations In The Depositional Environment Of The Lower Cincinnatian Kope Formation, Thomas K. Mahan Aug 1980

Variations In The Depositional Environment Of The Lower Cincinnatian Kope Formation, Thomas K. Mahan

Masters Theses

In northern Kentucky, the Upper Ordovician (Lower Cincinnatian) Kope Formation outcrops as a series of interbedded, laterally discontinuous limestone lenses and beds enclosed in a silty shale unit. Six stratigraphic sections within a 20-mile radius were sampled and measured and two of these were described in detail to characterize the variations in the environmental setting wherein the Kope Formation was deposited.

The shale lithology is homogeneous throughout this formation whereas the bioclastic limestones vary widely in faunal composition, texture, cross-sectional shape, and thickness. Apparently, the depositional style for the fine-grained, terrigenous sediment remained almost constant through Early Cincinnatian time, whereas …

Development Of A System For Water Quality Analysis Using Particle Induced X-Ray Emission, James Albert Andrus Aug 1980

Development Of A System For Water Quality Analysis Using Particle Induced X-Ray Emission, James Albert Andrus

Masters Theses

Particle induced x-ray emission (PIXE) has been in use for several years at Western's accelerator laboratory. Its primary purpose has been to provide trace element analysis of various types of solid samples. The analysis of water samples has not been done because of problems involving target preparation for the accelerator. A process called vapor filtration, developed at Purdue University, allows adequate sample preparation for the accelerator. This process is being adapted for use here at WMU. When completely operational, this system will give the WMU accelerator program the additional capability of performing water quality analyses to concentrations of parts per …

The Removal Of Viruses From Water By Conventional Water-Treatment Practices, Janet S. Ziegle Jan 1980

The Removal Of Viruses From Water By Conventional Water-Treatment Practices, Janet S. Ziegle

Masters Theses

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effectiveness of conventional water-treatment methods in removing viruses from raw water sources. Those processes studied included alum flocculation, rapid sand filtration of fleeced and unflocced water samples, and chlorine disinfection.

This study was approached using coliphage f2 as a seeded indicator of treatment efficiency. Coliphage f2 was chosen as an indicator because of its similarities to enteric viral pathogens in both morphology and sensitivity to water-treatment processes. Coliphage f2 was found to occur naturally in surface waters, but not in numbers sufficient to interfere with calculations.

Repopulation Of Fishes In Riley Creek, Coles County, Illinois Following Nitrogen Fertilizer Pollution, Kim James Carney Jan 1980

Repopulation Of Fishes In Riley Creek, Coles County, Illinois Following Nitrogen Fertilizer Pollution, Kim James Carney

Masters Theses

The repopulation of stream fishes was studied from 17 May 1979 to 25 October 1979 following a major kill (100% mortality) caused by nitrogen fertilizer pollution in Riley Creek, Coles County, Illinois. The extent of recovery was determined by comparing post-kill collections with pre-kill survey data that was collected on 25 October 1978.

Repopulation began six days after the abatement of the pollution source. It is suggested that the initial source of repopulation was from the nearest undamaged tributary. The first three reinhabitants in order of appearence were: stonerollers (Campostoma anomalum); creek chubs (Semotilus atromaculatus); and …

A Numerical Method For The Solution Of The Schrödinger Equation By A Trial Wavefunction Improvement Formula, Chun-Sheng Ko Jan 1980

A Numerical Method For The Solution Of The Schrödinger Equation By A Trial Wavefunction Improvement Formula, Chun-Sheng Ko

Masters Theses

A numerical method and corresponding computer algorithm for solving the one-dimensional radial Schrödinger equation to any desired accuracy is developed. The method uses a finite difference scheme in which an initial trial wavefunction is digitalized over a lattice covering the region of integration. The values of a rough solution are then altered at each lattice point by a simple improvement formula decreasing the value of the variational energy until the desired minimum is reached. The accuracy of these solutions depends only on the grid size. This method is characterized and tested with a harmonic oscillator potential. Practical evaluations and applications …

Fossil Algae In The St. Louis Limestone, Near St. Louis, Missouri, Sherris Ragsdale Myers Jan 1980

Fossil Algae In The St. Louis Limestone, Near St. Louis, Missouri, Sherris Ragsdale Myers

Masters Theses

"Although Mississippian algae research is fairly extensive, little has been published on algae from the Mississippian type locality, the Upper Mississippi River Valley. For this study, portions of sixteen St. Louis Limestone stratigraphic sections containing units with oncolites, domal stromatolites, laminations, or mottled (possibly algal) textures, were measured, described, and sampled to determine: (1) to what extent algae are preserved in the St. Louis Limestone, (2) if enough of the delicate structure was fossilized to determine morphology, (3) depositional environment of the algae, and (4) if the algae are related to a lithologic pattern. Thin sections of the sampled units …

Analysis And Interpretation Of The 5,000 Ft (1,538 M) Red-Bed Sequence Encountered In The Sparks Et Al. #1-8 (Michigan Basin Deep Borehole), John H. Fowler

Masters Theses

A 5,000 ft (1,538 m) pre-Mt. Simon (Upper Cambrian) red-bed sequence, encountered in the Gratiot County deep borehole (Sparks et al. #1-8) and herein named the North Star Formation, consists of undeformed recurring beds of immature arkosic sandstone 2 to 34 in (5 to 85 cm) thick. These beds grade upward from erosional basal contacts into mudstone units 1 in to 12 ft (3 cm to 3.8 m) thick. Within the sandstones, grading, horizontal lamination, and crossstratification define Bouma intervals "a", "b", and "c", which combine to form incomplete Bouma sequences. Mudstones exhibit abundant horizontal laminations. Secondary sedimentary structures (load …

Postglacial Environmental History Of A Marl Lake Site In Kalamazoo County, Southwestern Michigan, Valerie A. Naeve Apr 1979

Postglacial Environmental History Of A Marl Lake Site In Kalamazoo County, Southwestern Michigan, Valerie A. Naeve

Masters Theses

The depositional and ecological history of Oakland Bog, a relic Wisconsinan (16,500+300 years B.P.) lake site is interpreted from pollen stratigraphy, molluscan faunal assemblages and sediment facies. The lake basin, which probably formed after the melting of a late Wisconsinan buried ice block in the Kalamazoo Moraine Complex, is irregular, steep-sided and floored by glacial till. The till is overlain by as much as 7.6 meters of lacustrine marls which extend over an area of nearly 0.5 km2. Basal marls are characteristically medium gray, clayey, and contain abundant calcified stem fragments of charophytes; however, the overlying marls display …
