Geology Of The Northeast Portion Of Des Arc Quadrangle, Iron And Madison Counties, Missouri, Wesley Dean Weixelman Jan 1959

Geology Of The Northeast Portion Of Des Arc Quadrangle, Iron And Madison Counties, Missouri, Wesley Dean Weixelman

Masters Theses

"A geological investigation of the northeast portion of Des Arc Quadrangle in southeast Missouri was completed during the summer of 1958. Exposed Precambrian rocks include, from oldest to youngest, undifferentiated purple rhyolites with an interlayered tile-red rhyolite, andesine basalts with interlayered tuff, and an andesite. A diabase dike intrudes the lower purple rhyolites. The purple rhyolites account for about ninety-seven percent of the Precambrian exposures. Exposed Paleozoic rocks belong to the Bonneterre formation and include three members: (1) Lower Brown dolomite; (2) Light Gray dolomite with Tom Sauk limestone and arkosic sandstone and conglomerate facies; and (3) Upper Brown dolomite. …

A Cell-Center Distribution Function For Liquid Argon, Arthur M. Soellner Jan 1959

A Cell-Center Distribution Function For Liquid Argon, Arthur M. Soellner

Masters Theses

"A theoretical expression for a cell-center distribution function was developed using a fundamental statistical mechanics approach. A free volume picture of the liquid was used with each atom located in a spherical cell formed by its nearest neighbors. Cell-center density distribution curves were obtained for liquid argon for temperatures of 84.4°K, 91.8°K, 126.7°K, 144.1°K, and 149.3°K and for argon gas at 149.3°K, and a comparison made with the experimental atomic distribution curves obtained by Eisenstein. For the first two temperatures a sharper, more definite structure was predicted by the cell model. For the remaining four temperatures, with the assumptions made, …

Special emphasis is placed on the study of the relationships between the uranium and vanadium deposit and the host rock. Geometrical and geochemical criteria are offered in order to explain the local genesis of the ore …

A Preliminary Search For Subionizers, Joseph B. Hughes Jan 1959

A Preliminary Search For Subionizers, Joseph B. Hughes

Masters Theses

"A number of physicists of recent years have been attempting to explain the basic nature of the universe in terms of particles. A few particles have been predicted theoretically, and some of these, along with many others have appeared experimentally, Searches for them have presented some interesting experimental problems and brought forth some invaluable experimental apparatus. One of these devices is the Wilson cloud chamber, with which this thesis is concerned.

Of the particles that have been discovered thus far, only the electron and the proton appear to be stable. The rest ultimately decay by the emission of photons and …

Investigation Of The Geometric Effects Connected With The U-Effect-Iii, Anthony Edward Hoffman Jan 1958

Investigation Of The Geometric Effects Connected With The U-Effect-Iii, Anthony Edward Hoffman

Masters Theses

"Statement of Problem: The investigation reported herein is of the dependence of the voltage output due to the U-Effect-III upon the geometry of the tube. The geometry of the tube is defined to include the inner diameter of the tube as well as the size and number of the mercury and electrolyte drops. The previous experimental study of the effect did not include an investigation of the effects of the geometry of the tube, as defined above, on the voltage output. It seems that information as to the dependence of the output voltage on the geometry of the tube would …

Paragenesis Of The Minerals In The Einstein Vein Madison County, Missouri, Robert P. Stevens Jan 1958

Paragenesis Of The Minerals In The Einstein Vein Madison County, Missouri, Robert P. Stevens

Masters Theses

"Selection of the Problem: The mineralogical problem of determining the paragenetic sequence of minerals in the Einstein vein, Madison County, Missouri, was suggested by Dr. O. R. Grawe, who previously had supervised a thesis by Joel Pomerene dealing with the geology of the area. Although considerable attention has been given to the mineralization along the vein, a specific study of the paragenetic relations has not been made. Paragenesis has, however, been discussed by others in papers dealing with the geology of the area. Such a study is extremely important in the establishment of a hypothesis of origin, and hence, an …

Liesegang Rings, Robert Edward Young Jan 1958

Liesegang Rings, Robert Edward Young

Masters Theses

"Although the discovery of the "Liesegang Rings" phenomenon was made sometime before 1855 little was done in the way of study or experimentation until 1896 when R. E. Liesegang discovered that if a crystal or strong solution of silver nitrate is added to a gelatin gel containing dilute potassium chromate, the resulting precipitate of silver chromate is not continuous, as might be expected, but forms a discontinuous periodic pattern. This pattern follows a geometric progression law, xn = akn, where xn is the position of the nth ring, and a and k are constants. K …

The Use Of Chelating Agents In Inorganic Analysis, Richard K. Vitek Jan 1958

A Study Of Background In A Long Sensitive Time Wilson Cloud Chamber, Donald A. Rinker Jan 1958

A Study Of Background In A Long Sensitive Time Wilson Cloud Chamber, Donald A. Rinker

Masters Theses

"A long-sensitive time Wilson Cloud Chamber has been built and tested. A usable sensitive time of 2.5 seconds has been achieved by the use of a system of five expansion valves, the first three of which are used to obtain the sensitive time and the final two to continue the expansion at a supersaturation slightly less than critical in order to allow all droplets formed to grow in size and fall into the liquid. This system of continued expansion, coupled with delayed recompression, has been proved to reduce the background density in the chamber to an average operating value of …

Masters Theses

"Purpose and Scope: The purpose of this study is to determine if it is possible to detect buried Precambrian igneous hills in Wayne County and the larger part of Reynolds County in southeast Missouri by the use of aerial photo drainage pattern analysis.

The St. Francis Mountains are located in southeast Missouri. They form a part of the Precambrian basement complex, and have been exposed at the surface by the erosion of the lower Paleozoic sediments which covered them. Some of the hills which make up the St. Francis Mountains are exposed to a great degree, while others still have …

An Improved Long Sensitive Time Wilson Cloud Chamber, Clarence W. Mettenburg Jan 1958

An Improved Long Sensitive Time Wilson Cloud Chamber, Clarence W. Mettenburg

Masters Theses

"The discovery of numerous new particles in recent years such as mesons and hyperons causes one to speculate about the possible existence of still other particle types….

A cloud chamber seems to be a most suitable means of detecting particles ionizing less than the minimum ionization of the electron because it is capable of detecting almost all the ions produced. The cloud chamber makes it possible to study not only a wide range of ionization but also many fine details of track structure which would go unnoticed by other means of detection….

With the information and experience gained by the …

Iterative Solutions Of Kirkwood's Integral For Liquid Argon, Eugene D. Fabricius Jan 1958

Iterative Solutions Of Kirkwood's Integral For Liquid Argon, Eugene D. Fabricius

Masters Theses

"A liquid or a dense gas may be regarded either as a very imperfect gas in which multiple collisions are frequent or as a distorted crystal in which the long range order has been lost. The crystal-like approach has not led to formal solutions, but it has led to several approximate treatments which can be used to give numerical results.

The two main types of approaches which have been used are: the cell theories, in which the liquid is regarded as a distorted crystal with one molecule located at or near each lattice point; and the hole theories, in which …

An Application Of Cathodic Sputtering To The Etching Of Metallographic Specimens, Robert Ruch Jan 1958

An Application Of Cathodic Sputtering To The Etching Of Metallographic Specimens, Robert Ruch

Masters Theses

"The U. S. Bureau of Mines at Rolla, Missouri has for some years been conducting research on manganese-copper alloys. The study of the physical metallurgy of these alloys -- dissimilar metal couples -- has always been complicated by the difficulty of satisfactorily etching this material. It was felt that by introducing a new etching technique, cathodic bombardment, satisfactory etching might be accomplished. On this basis the following research program was proposed:

1) To survey the present state of art of cathodic etching, etching by means of cathodic sputtering;

2) To design and construct suitable equipment for the experimental study of …

Permeability Study Of Algal Reef Beds Within The Bonneterre Formation, National Mine, St. Francois, Missouri, Bobbie L. Perry

Masters Theses

"The Missouri "Lead Belt" comprises approximately 50 square miles, centering around the town of Flat River, in St. Francois County. Missouri. This district has been producing lead for more than 200 years, the total production being at least 8,000,000 tons of lead, valued at more than $1,000,000,000. For many years, the annual production of the district has been at least one-fourth of the total production in the United States.

An excellent description of the geology of this area was published recently by Ohle and Brown in 1954.

The ore consists principally of galena which is disseminated within the Bonneterre formation …

A Study Of Cholesterol And Lecithin Blood Levels In Rh Sensitized Women Treated With Rh Hapten, Franklyn Lewis Jul 1957

A Study Of Cholesterol And Lecithin Blood Levels In Rh Sensitized Women Treated With Rh Hapten, Franklyn Lewis

Masters Theses

The Problem And Its Background

Introduction

Perhaps one of the most popular subjects, and a subject which has been discussed a great deal by the layman is that of Rh and Rh incompatibilities.

Landsteiner1 discovered the Rh property of human blood by means of immune sera prepared with the blood of rhesus monkeys. He was assisted in this work by Wiener2, who states that the Rh property was found to be present in about 85% of white individuals, and independent of the blood groups and M-N type. It is these individuals who are referred to as Rh …

A Calorimetric Investigation Of Zirconium, Titanium, And Zirconium Alloys From 60 To 960°C, James L. Scott Jun 1957

A Calorimetric Investigation Of Zirconium, Titanium, And Zirconium Alloys From 60 To 960°C, James L. Scott

Masters Theses

Structural materials for nuclear reactors must meet three stringent conditions: they must have adequate mechanical properties at the operating temperature, they must be corrosion resistant to the heat transfer medium (air, water, or alkali metals), and they must not absorb neutrons excessively. This last requirement is a particularly stringent one, for it is met by only four accessible metals: aluminum, magnesium, beryllium, and zirconium, as Table I shows.

For reactors which operate at low temperatures, aluminum serves as an excellent constructional material, but it cannot be used for more efficient high-temperature reactors, because of its low elevated temperature strength associated …

A Geological Study Of The Irvine Ranch Area, Johnson And Campbell Counties, Wyoming, Gale E. Butterfield Jan 1957

A Geological Study Of The Irvine Ranch Area, Johnson And Campbell Counties, Wyoming, Gale E. Butterfield

Masters Theses

"The discovery of uranium in the Powder River Basin, Wyoming, by the U. S. Geological Survey in 1952 has lead to an extensive exploration program throughout the region by both private and governmental agencies. This report is a geological study of an area in the southwestern part of the basin.

Geological and radiometric mapping carried out as a part of this report indicated several areas of uranium occurrence. Some of these occurrences warrant tests by drilling.

Mineralogical and petrographic study has shown the principal uranium minerals to be carnotite and metatyuyamunite. The mineralization occurs in arkosic sandstones. Assays of the …

Transference Numbers Of Concentrated Manganous Chloride Solutions, Marshall L. Severson Jan 1957

Transference Numbers Of Concentrated Manganous Chloride Solutions, Marshall L. Severson

Masters Theses

"Electrolytic conduction differs from metallic conduction only in the nature of the carrier of the current. In the case of metallic conduction the carrier is electrons. The passage of an electric current through an electrolyte occurs only by the movement of ions of opposite charge moving in opposite directions under an applied potential. The current carried by a particular ionic species is a direct function of the concentration, the charge on the ion, and the ionic mobility. A transference number is the fraction of the total current a given ion carries in a particular electrolyte undergoing electrolysis. The sum of …

Detection Of Low Energy Positive Ions By Scintillation Methods, Graydon J. Hanson Jan 1957

Detection Of Low Energy Positive Ions By Scintillation Methods, Graydon J. Hanson

Masters Theses

"This thesis deals with the feasibility of efficiently detecting low energy positive ions, those with energies of less than several hundred electron volts, using phosphors.

The scintillation technique, first used visually and greatly improved in the last ten years by the use of a photomultiplier tube, has greatly advanced detection in high energy fields. The photomultiplier is capable of delivering milliampere pulses of current of short duration and these can be registered directly by the many electronic devices currently in use.

Extensive work has been done with phosphors which scintillate under which energy bombardment, due in part to their wide …

Some Thermodynamic And Structural Properties Of A Linear Chain Of Atoms, And Extension Of The Model To Two- And Three-Dimensional Cases, Hari Gopal Mukerjee Jan 1957

Some Thermodynamic And Structural Properties Of A Linear Chain Of Atoms, And Extension Of The Model To Two- And Three-Dimensional Cases, Hari Gopal Mukerjee

Masters Theses

"An attempt has been made in the present work to derive some thermodynamic and structural properties of a linear chain of atoms (under somewhat idealized conditions) moving in the fields of nearest neighbours and assuming a parabolic well in the interaction of pairs within the range of relative movements. The equation of state and other formulas derived are applicable only to the linear model which could be considered as a simplified form of one-dimensional crystals in the form of chain-like molecules of rubber-like substances. An attempt has also been made to extend the model to two- and three-dimensional cases"--Introduction, page …

Internal Friction In Manganese Copper Alloys, William Paul Dixon Jan 1957

Internal Friction In Manganese Copper Alloys, William Paul Dixon

Masters Theses

"The study of the physical properties of the manganese-copper alloys is an intriguing one. These alloys show promise of usefulness in instances in which high internal friction is needed to reduce the noise and vibrational stresses at resonant frequencies of a part of a machine. The purpose of this study has been to learn more about the internal friction of manganese-copper alloys as a function of temperature, stress amplitude, frequency, time, and past history of the specimen. From this information the mechanism for absorption of vibrational energy is proposed, or at least some progress has been made toward its determination. …

A Probe For Measuring Ultrasonic Pressures, Robert F. Rohrer Jan 1957

A Probe For Measuring Ultrasonic Pressures, Robert F. Rohrer

Masters Theses

"In the study of acoustics, the term ultrasonics is defined as those wave motions that have frequencies greater than about 20,000 cycles per second. The characteristics of a sound wave at any point in a medium can be regarded as completely defined when the amplitude, frequency, and phase of its Fourier components are known.

Sound measurements at their best are difficult. In the last few years sensitive linear microphones and electronic amplifiers have become available. Still, there are two difficulties of prime importance with their use in a sound field. First, there is the precise, absolute calibration of the equipment …

The Phosphoria Formation Of The Northeastern Big Horn Basin, Wyoming, William A. Beatty Jan 1957

The Phosphoria Formation Of The Northeastern Big Horn Basin, Wyoming, William A. Beatty

Masters Theses

"Purpose and Scope. — The Phosphoria formation of the northern Rocky Mountains of the United States has received considerable attention from geologists because of its important reserves of phosphate and petroleum. In the Big Horn Basin of Wyoming, however, still more work is needed to compile the information necessary for a complete understanding of the facies changes exhibited by this formation.

The purpose of this paper is two-fold: first to present a description of the lithology and the paleontology of the Phosphoria formation in the northeast part of the Big Horn Basin, and secondly to show the stratigraphic relationship of …

A Laboratory Study Of The Beech Granite Plagioclase, Joseph Taylor Carlisle Dec 1956

A Laboratory Study Of The Beech Granite Plagioclase, Joseph Taylor Carlisle

Masters Theses

Introduction: In northeast Tennessee a complex basement of Pre-Cambrian crystalline rocks either unconformably underlies the oldest Cambrian sediments, or bears a faulted relationship to them. The complexity of these rocks is, indeed, so great that much doubt exists as to the origin and even the nature of their component rock units. Keith (1907, p. 3) subdivided these rocks into two large units: (1) the Cranberry "granite," in this region a highly contorted gneiss of complex lithology, and (2) the Beech granite, a rather porphyritic, generally coarse-grained granite which he considered to have been considerably squeezed and mashed. Of these Keith …
