The U.S. Army Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate (NVESD) and the U.S. Army Research Laboratory have developed a terahertz (THz) -band imaging system performance model for detection and identification of concealed weaponry. The MATLAB-based model accounts for the effects of all critical sensor and display components and for the effects of atmospheric attenuation, concealment material attenuation, and active illumination. The model is based on recent U.S. Army NVESD sensor performance modeling technology that couples system design parameters to observer–sensor field performance by using the acquire methodology for weapon identification performance predictions. Scanning tunneling microscopy of Sb-capped GaAs shows the coexistence of different surface reconstructions. The majority of the surface consists of an α2(2×4) reconstruction typically observed for GaAs(001) surfaces. At step edges, an α(4×3) reconstruction, common for GaSb(001), is observed. We argue that strain couples the surface reconstruction to the film morphology. Density functional theory calculations show that the (2×4) reconstruction is stabilized in GaSb films when the lattice parameter is constrained to that of GaAs, as happens in the middle of a terrace, while the (4×3) reconstruction is stabilized when the lattice parameter is allowed to relax toward that of …

We demonstrate Rabi oscillations of small numbers of 87Rb atoms between ground and Rydberg states with n≤43. Coherent population oscillations are observed for single atoms, while the presence of two or more atoms decoheres the oscillations. We show that these observations are consistent with van der Waals interactions of Rydberg atoms.

The behavior of an atom in a nonuniform magnetic field is analyzed, as well as the motion of a classical magnetic dipole (a spinning charged ball) and a rotating charged ring. For the atom it is shown that, while the magnetic field does no work on the electron-orbital contribution to the magnetic moment (the source of translational kinetic energy being the internal energy of the atom), whether or not it does work on the electron- spin contribution to the magnetic moment depends on whether the electron has an intrinsic rotational kinetic energy associated with its spin. In this study large-eddy simulations (LES) are used to gain more knowledge on the shell of subsiding air that is frequently observed around cumulus clouds. First, a detailed comparison between observational and numerical results is presented to better validate LES as a tool for studies of microscale phenomena. It is found that horizontal cloud profiles of vertical velocity, humidity, and temperature are in good agreement with observations. They show features similar to the observations, including the presence of the shell of descending air around the cloud. Internal conversion coefficients have been measured for transitions in both normal deformed and triaxial strongly deformed bands in 167Lu using the Gammasphere and ICE Ball spectrometers. The results for all in-band transitions are consistent with E2 multipolarity. Upper limits are determined for the internal conversion coefficients for linking transitions between TSD Band 2 and TSD Band 1, the nw = 1 and nw = 0 wobbling bands, respectively.

Electronic And Magnetic Properties Of Endohedrally Doped Fullerene Mn@C60: A Total Energy Study, Guangping Li, Renat F. Sabirianov, Jing Lu, Xiao Cheng Zeng, Wai-Ning Mei

We perform total energy calculations on a manganese atom encapsulated inside a C60 cage using density functional theory with the generalized gradient approximation through three optimization schemes and along four paths inside the cage. We find that when Mn is located in the central region, its electronic and magnetic properties are not exactly the same as those of a free Mn atom due to weak coupling between Mn and the cage. As Mn is shifted toward to the edge, the total energy and spin start to change significantly when Mn is situated about one-third of the way between the …

The effects of lattice mismatch strain and atomic size mismatch strain on surface reconstructions are analyzed using density functional theory. These calculations demonstrate the importance of an explicit treatment of alloying when calculating the energies of alloyed surface reconstructions. Lattice mismatch strain has little impact on surface dimer ordering for the α2(2×4) reconstruction of GaAs alloyed with In. However, atomic size mismatch strain induces the surface In atoms to preferentially alternate position, which, in turn, induces an alternating configuration of the surface anion dimers. These results agree well with experimental data for α2(2×4) domains in InGaAs∕GaAs surfaces.

We have studied the dynamic switching triggered by spin angular momentum transfer in a pulsed current of a spin-valve-type trilayer structure, and its dependence on thermal effects. In order to determine the current pulse parameters, where fast and stable switching can be achieved, we have studied the magnetization’s dynamics properties as a function of applied current pulse amplitude and shape, waiting time, and initial orientation, and also as a function of the Gilbert damping constant. In this paper, we propose a method for a synthetic antiferromagnet structure’s critical curve determination. The method is based on reversible susceptibility’s singularities detection, as the magnetic field is swept along easy axis, in both positive and negative direction, while a hard axis bias field is also applied. By performing susceptibility measurements with different values of the bias field, the critical curve can be determined. Knowing the critical curve of a synthetic antiferromagnetic structure is essential for devices such as magnetic random access memories.

In this paper, the temperature dependence of the hysteretic processes of Co nanowires, squarelly ordered in an array prepared by electrodeposition in nanopores of alumina membranes was analyzed. Both the magnetostatic interactions induced in the nanowires arrays and the thermal stresses (radial, azimuthal and axial stresses), which appear during the cooling of the system (nanowire and alumina template) from room temperature to 3 K was evaluated. The analysis of thermal induced stresses provides useful informations concerning the magnetic anisotropy in the Co nanowires. Superconductivity Close To Magnetic Instability In Fe(Se1−Xtex)0.82, M H. Fang, H M. Pham, B Qian, T J. Liu, E K. Vehstedt, Y Liu, L Spinu, Z Q. Mao

We report our study of the evolution of superconductivity and the phase diagram of the ternary Fe(Se1−xTex)0.82 (0≤x≤1.0) system. We discovered a superconducting phase with Tc,max=14 K in the 0.30.82, which exhibits an incommensurate antiferromagnetic order. We discuss the relationship between the superconductivity and magnetism of this material system in terms of recent results from neutron-scattering measurements. Our results and analyses suggest that superconductivity in this class of Fe-based compounds is associated with magnetic fluctuations and therefore may be unconventional in nature.

We report on the dynamic properties of Permalloy nanostrips at gagahertz frequencies. The thickness of the strips is 100 nm, strip width is 300 nm, strip spacing is 1 μm, and length is 0.3–100 μm; aspect ratios are 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 1:5, 1:10, and 1:333. The dynamic behavior was studied by network analyzer ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) using Permalloy strips on a coplanar waveguide in flip-chip geometry. Recently, the current-induced spin-transfer torque has been proposed as a convenient writing process in high density magnetic random access memory. A spin-polarized current can switch the magnetization of a ferromagnetic layer more efficiently than a current induced magnetic field. Our paper discusses the switching properties of a Stoner–Wohlfarth magnetic particle for the case when spin torques and external field pulses are simultaneously present. Using the Newman and Penrose [ E. T. Newman and R. Penrose J. Math. Phys. (N.Y.) 3 566 (1962)] spin-coefficient formalism, we examine the full Bianchi identities of general relativity in the context of gravitational lensing, where the matter and space-time curvature are projected into a lens plane perpendicular to the line of sight. From one component of the Bianchi identity, we provide a rigorous, new derivation of a Poisson equation for the projected matter density where the source term involves second derivatives of the observed weak gravitational lensing shear. An electron-ion collider of a center-of-mass energy up to 90 GeV at luminosity up to 1035 cm-2s-1 with both beams highly polarized is essential for exploring the new QCD frontier of strong color fields in nuclear and precisely imaging the sea-quarks and gluons in the nucleon. The light vector mesons (ρ,ω, and ϕ) were produced in deuterium, carbon, titanium, and iron targets in a search for possible in-medium modifications to the properties of the ρ meson at normal nuclear densities and zero temperature. The vector mesons were detected with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) via their decays to e+e−. The rare leptonic decay was chosen to reduce final-state interactions. A combinatorial background was subtracted from the invariant mass spectra using a well-established event-mixing technique. The ρ-meson mass spectrum was extracted after the ω and ϕ signals were removed in a nearly model-independent way. Comparisons …

We present the Bjorken integral extracted from Jefferson Lab experiment EG1b for 0.05< Q2 2. The integral is fit to extract the twist-4 element f p−n2 which appears to be relatively large and negative. Systematic studies of this higher twist analysis establish its legitimacy at Q2 around 1  GeV2. We also performed an isospin decomposition of the generalized forward spin polarizability γ0. Although its isovector part provides a reliable test of the calculation techniques of chiral perturbation theory, our data disagree with the calculations.

The exclusive electroproduction process e ⃗ p → e'nπ+ was measured in the range of the photon virtuality Q2 =1.7-4.5 GeV2, and the invariant mass range for the n π+ system of W=1.15-1.7 GeV using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer. For the first time, these kinematics are probed in exclusive π+ production from protons with nearly full coverage in the azimuthal and polar angles of the nπ+ center-of-mass system. The catalytic trimer of Methanococcus jannaschii aspartate transcarbamoylase is extremely heat stable, maintaining 75% of its activity after heat treatment for 60 min at 75 degrees C. We undertook its structural analysis in order to understand the molecular basis of its thermostability and gain insight on how its catalytic function adapts to high temperature. Several structural elements potentially contributing to thermostability were identified. Recent experimental and theoretical studies of the magnetoelectric ME effect in the nanocomposite structures and in laminates show an enhanced ME coefficient. These materials combine piezoelectric properties of the paramagnetic phase and piezomagnetic properties of the magnetic phase. We propose to fabricate heterostructures formed by piezoelectric materials and magnetic antiperovskites as magnetoelectric materials. We show that the magnetic structure of antiperovskite, such as Mn3GaN, can be controlled by a small applied biaxial strain. The lowering of symmetry with the strain causes the local magnetic moments of Mn atoms to rotate from the trigonal 5g structure with symmetric curl of spin …

Local environment surrounding Zr atoms in the thin films of nanocrystalline zirconia (ZrO2) has been investigated by using the extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) technique. These films prepared by the ion beam assisted deposition exhibit long-range structural order of cubic phase and high hardness at room temperature without chemical stabilizers. The local structure around Zr probed by EXAFS indicates a cubic Zr sublattice with O atoms located on the nearest tetragonal sites with respect to the Zr central atoms, as well as highly disordered locations. Tailoring Magnetic Anisotropy At The Ferromagnetic/Ferroelectric Interface, Chun-Gang Duan, Julian P. Velev, R. F. Sabirianov, W. N. Mei, S. S. Jaswal, E. Y. Tsymbal

It is predicted that magnetic anisotropy of a thin magnetic film may be affected by the polarization of a ferroelectric material. Using a Fe∕BaTiO3 bilayer as a representative model and performing first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that a reversal of the electric polarization of BaTiO3 produces a sizable change in magnetic anisotropy energy of Fe films. Tailoring the magnetic anisotropy of a nanomagnet by an adjacent ferroelectric material may yield entirely new device concepts, such as electric-field controlled magnetic data storage.

The small-x deep inelastic scattering in the saturation region is governed by the nonlinear evolution of Wilson-line operators. In the leading logarithmic approximation it is given by the Balitsky-Kovchegov equation for the evolution of color dipoles. In the next-to-leading order the Balitsky-Kovchegov equation gets contributions from quark and gluon loops as well as from the tree gluon diagrams with quadratic and cubic nonlinearities. We calculate the gluon contribution to the small-x evolution of Wilson lines (the quark part was obtained earlier).

The helicity amplitudes of the electroexcitation of the Roper resonance are extracted for 1.7 < Q2 < 4.5 GeV2 from recent high precision JLab-CLAS cross section and longitudinally polarized beam asymmetry data for π+ electroproduction on protons at W=1.15-1.69 GeV. The analysis is made using two approaches, dispersion relations and a unitary isobar model, which give consistent Q2 behavior of the helicity amplitudes for the gamma*p -> N (1440)P11 transition. The exclusive channel polarized proton(polarized e,e' p)π0 was studied in the first and second nucleon resonance regions in the Q2 range from 0.187 to 0.770 GeV2 at Jefferson Lab using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS). Longitudinal target and beam-target asymmetries were extracted over a large range of center-of-mass angles of the π0 and compared to the unitary isobar model MAID, the dynamic model by Sato and Lee, and the dynamic model DMT. Electroproduction of exclusive ϕ vector mesons has been studied with the CLAS detector in the kinematic range 1.4 ⩽ Q2 ⩽ 3.8 GeV2 ,0.0 ⩽ t′ ⩽3.6 GeV2 , and 2.0 ⩽ W ⩽ 3.0 GeV. The scaling exponent for the total cross section as 1/(Q2 +M2ϕ)n was determined to be n = 2.49 ± 0.33. The slope of the four-momentum transfer t′ distribution is bϕ = 0.98 ± 0.17 GeV-2 . The beam-spin asymmetries in the hard exclusive electroproduction of photons on the proton (ep→epγ ) were measured over a wide kinematic range and with high statistical accuracy. These asymmetries result from the interference of the Bethe-Heitler process and of deeply virtual Compton scattering. Over the whole kinematic range (xB from 0.11 to 0.58, Q2 from 1 to 4.8  GeV2, −t from 0.09 to 1.8  GeV2), the azimuthal dependence of the asymmetries is compatible with expectations from leading-twist dominance, A ≃ asinϕ/(1+ccosϕ).
