Preliminary Report On A Pleistocene Pond, Garden County, Nebraska, Robert F. Diffendal Jr. May 1977

Preliminary Report On A Pleistocene Pond, Garden County, Nebraska, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Discontinuous Pleistocene pond deposits occur along the valley sides of Dankworth Canyon southeast of Lewellen, Nebraska. At one locality the beds exposed in a channel-fill up to six feet thick consist of sand-sized carbonate-rich sediments deposited in alter nating light and dark layers resembling varves. Microscopic examination of disaggregated samples reveals that most of the sediment consists of sand and silt often cemented into tubes. Other components include several kinds of freshwater ostracodes, gastropods, charophyte gyrogonites, and bone-like debris probably from fish.

Daily Maximum And Minimum Temperature Forecasts And The Influence Of Snow Cover, Kenneth F. Dewey Jan 1977

Daily Maximum And Minimum Temperature Forecasts And The Influence Of Snow Cover, Kenneth F. Dewey

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Research into the relationship between snow cover and observed maximum and minimum temperatures is reviewed. An example of the importance of snow cover and forecasting max/min temperatures is presented for this past winter (1976-77). It is shown that there was a warm bias in the MOS temperature forecasts for the northern Great Plains following the receipt of a fresh cover of snowfall. it is proposed that snow cover be incorporated as a conditional predictor to be used only during specific synoptic conditions.

These fossils include: Protozoa (fusulinids*); Porifera (one spicule type); Bryozoa (two undetermined genera); Brachiopoda (fragments); Gastropoda (two undetermined forms); Ostracoda (Bairdia*, Hollinella*, Moorites*, and one undetermined genus); Crinoidea (whole and partial ossicles*); Echinoidea (whole and partial spines and spine bases*); Holothuroidea (Achistrum …

The Prediction Of Lake Huron Lake-Effect Snowfall Systems, Kenneth F. Dewey Jan 1975

The Prediction Of Lake Huron Lake-Effect Snowfall Systems, Kenneth F. Dewey

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Data was collected during the 1971-72 snowfall season for the Lake Huron basin. The bulk aerodynamic approach, as formulated by Priestly, was utilized to estimate the daily average flux of heat and moisture over the lake. It was hypothesized that discriminant analysis could be employed to determine the threshold value (discriminant index) of the energy flux which is necessary for the occurrence of the lake-effect snowfall system. To determine the validity of this threshold value, the discriminant index was applied to a series of historical data. The results of this analysis indicated that the discriminant index could be utilized to …

Nebraska Wild Flowers, Robert C. Lommasson, Paul Lommasson (Depositor)

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

This book is an attempt to present to the general public representative types of many of the conspicuous wild flowers found in Nebraska. These 260-some plants in no way constitute a flora of Nebraska which would number some 1,700 species of flowering plants. Included herein are both native and naturalized flowering herbaceous plants exclusive of the grasses and grasslike plants. Among these are plants that have had a long existence here and others which have recently invaded our area. Some are highly cherished and others are considered as common weeds. Excluded from this book are woody plants, such as trees, …

The Delaware Limestone (Middle Devonian) Of Southwestern Ontario, Canada, Robert F. Diffendal Jr. May 1972

The Delaware Limestone (Middle Devonian) Of Southwestern Ontario, Canada, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The Delaware Limestone of southwestern Ontario was originally called a part of the Corniferous Limestone by Murray (184.3-53). Since that time the same outcroppings have been designated, either wholly or partially, as the Onondaga Formation, the Big Lime, Delaware Limestone, Norfolk Formation, Dundee Limestone, Columbus Limestone, and the Dundee (= Delaware) Limestone. As recently as 1971 the names Dundee Limestone and Delaware Limestone were used for the same formation.

Hand specimen and petrographic study of samples from nineteen localities in southwestern Ontario indicates that the limestones of the formation exposed on the Niagara peninsula are intermediate in type between the …

Handbook Of Nebraska Trees: A Guide To The Native And Most Important Introduced Species (Revised 1951), Raymond J. Pool Jun 1966

Handbook Of Nebraska Trees: A Guide To The Native And Most Important Introduced Species (Revised 1951), Raymond J. Pool

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Nebraska is not to be classified as a forested state since less than 3 per cent of the area of the state is covered by natural timber. However our native forest trees are numerous as to different kinds and their distribution in the state is characterized by many interesting facts. The every-day life of our people is not so commonly associated with trees as is that of peoples in the more wooded states where lumbering and the wood-working industries are very important occupations because of the proximity of great forests of coniferous or broadleaved trees. The people of Nebraska use …
