Diagenetic Controls Of Reservoir Quality In The Mississippian Wayne Beds In The Williston Basin, Bottineau County, North Dakota, Michael M. Wetmore

The carbonate Wayne beds of the Frobisher-Alida interval (Mississippian Mission Canyon Formation) in the Williston Basin, North Dakota, are capable of producing as much as 400,000 barrels of oil per well at depths of only 3,100 feet. Wayne production is from structural traps in the intertidal packstone-wackestone lithofacies; however, the ultimate recoverable reserves of oil per well is controlled neither by structure, nor by depositional environments.

The Wayne beds underwent cementation and micritization in the marine phreatic diagenetic environment. Hypersaline diagenesis caused minor dolomitization and anhydritization. Dissolution and minor cementation occurred in the freshwater vadose zone. Freshwater phreatic diagenesis resulted …

This study addressed three main questions: I) how thick was the ice that covered the southern Lake Agassiz basin during the Wisconsinan and how much that ice depressed the crust, 2) how much rebound has occurred since deglaciation and whether or not rebound is complete, and 3) what were the effects of this rebound on the basin.

The most direct method of measuring rebound in the Lake Agassiz basin is from strandlines left by glacial Lake Agassiz. The oldest complete strandline, the Herman, presumably rebounded, with the northern end rebounding more because the ice was thicker there and had melted …

Contamination of groundwater by agricultural chemicals is of concern to the population of the Northern Great Plains. Preferential flow (macropore, finger, and funnel) allows such chemicals to move relatively rapidly through materials considered to be aquitards. Preferential flow mechanisms at two sites in North Dakota, one in till, the other in glaciolacustrine sediments were determined by application of blue dye (FD&C No 1) solution to framed sites (9m2 & 4m2) with the topsoil removed. The purpose of this study was to determine if enough evidence exists to support an impact origin hypothesis the Newporte structure. Newporte, a petroliferous, subsurface, crater-shaped feature is located one mile south of the North Dakota - Saskatchewan border in Renville County. It is evident in Precambrian through Ordovician strata at depths of 9100 to 9600 ft (2774 to 2926 m) structure is approximately 2.0 miles (J.2 km) in diameter. Shell Oil company discovered Newporte field when testing this seismically-defined structure in 1977.

Seismic reflection profiling data and synthetic seismograms were used to generate maps that confirmed the circularity of …

The purpose of this thesis was to test the antecedents of religiosity on religious commitment. Specifically, what dimensions of religiosity predict if a young-adult Mormon male will serve a mission. Both Logistic Regression and LISREL were used to examine data from the Young Men's Study, in order to predict Mission. The six variables, Religious Intention, Public Religiosity, Religious Negativism, Family Structure, Tithing, and Smoking were found to have direct effects on missionary service. This thesis designed, constructed, and tested a robotic arm for the Aerobot Aerial Robot. The main purpose of the ARM is to enable the Aerobot to retrieve objects for use in an annual robotics competition. Design of the ARM involved synthesizing the characteristics of simplicity, weight, strength, and size. The result was a three-degree-of-freedom manipulator that uses electric motors, cable linkages, and telescoping tubes to access a work space below the Aerobot. Vibrational Energy Transfer Within The B3Π(0+U) State Of 79Br2 Upon Collision With N2, O2, No, And Sf6, Gregory S. Williams

Vibrational transfer and electronic quenching in the lower vibrational levels of the 79Br2(B; v'≤3) were investigated using spectrally resolved, temporally resolved pulsed laser induced fluorescence techniques. Spectrally resolved emissions from collisionally populated Br2(B) vibrational levels were observed for N2, O2, NO, and SF6collision partners. The vibrational transfer was efficient in the nonpredissociative vibrational levels and is adequately described by the Montroll-Shuler model. An average fundamental vibrational transfer rate coefficient of kv(l,0)=3.4(±0.6) x 10-11 cm3/molec-sec predicts the vibrational transfer rates for the 0≤v'≤3 collisions with …

A formal process is described for populating the knowledge base of the Automatic Programming Technologies for Avionics Software APTAS system. This process was developed using a general knowledge base population process that applies to many knowledge-based software engineering systems. This general process is also described. The formal process for APTAS was demonstrated by storing new information from the radar tracking domain into the knowledge base of APTAS. The Saber wargame is a theater-level air/land battle wargame written in Ada that is being developed for the Air Force Wargaming Center at Maxwell AFB, AL. This thesis documents how the user interface and simulation engine were integrated. Integration was accomplished by developing a portable object-oriented database system (OODBMS) interface. The interface was implemented in Ada and tied to an OODBMS also written in Ada. Using the interface, both subsystems were able to work from a consistent database and exchange information. This research effort examines the problem of automating the scenario generation process and presents a prototype architecture for an automated scenario generation system. This architecture is designed using an object- oriented approach which leads to a modular and modifiable design. The architecture provides a mechanism for automatically generating scenario files from a textual US Army operation order. This translation process occurs in two phases. First, the text operation order is translated into an intermediate format called the mission file. Architect composes formally specified domain objects into an executable software specification that can be used to verify program correctness prior to generation of language specific code. This research was adapted the domain analysis techniques of Prieto- Diaz and Tracz to specify a domain analysis process which was used to conduct domain analysis over the domain of software executives. This analysis created a set of informal and formal domain model artifacts. The domain model artifacts were instantiated into two application executive subsystems. Based on an autoregressive model, Complex Partial Correlation CPARCOR features are known to provide exceptional Position, Scale, and Rotation Invariant PSRI properties for planar 2-Dimensional 2-D object recognition. Although autogressive models have been successfully applied to numerous spatio-temporal recognition tasks, the effects of out-of-plane image rotations were never considered. This study investigates application of the CPAR-COR model to a five class problem of nonplanar 2-D views of 3-D objects. Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation (MMAE) is a method of estimating unknown system parameters by modeling all possible parameter configurations in several models. The parameters for this research are failure status conditions associated with flight control actuators and sensors on the LAMBDA Unmanned Research Vehicle, an experimental aircraft operated by Wright Laboratory Flight Controls Division at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. Six actuator failures and eight sensor failures are modeled, along with the fully functional aircraft, in fifteen elemental Kalman filters. This study investigated the technological feasibility of a man- portable satellite laser communications system. Areas of interest were an end- to-end system analysis on the communications link evaluation of atmospheric effects and evaluation of semi-conductor lasers as the laser source. A literature search revealed that satellite laser communication research is primarily directed at inter-satellite links. There have been some proposed systems for space-to-ground laser communications systems, but they all utilize large fixed ground stations. Steady-state photolysis techniques were used to study electronic-to- vibrational energy transfer mechanisms from atomic bromine to nitric oxide. Molecular bromine was photodissociated by 488nm radiation to produce equal parts Br(2P1/2) and Br(2P3/2). Side fluorescence intensity from Br(2P1/2) at 2.7 µm and from NO (v=1 and 2) around 5.3 µm measured as a function of bromine pressure and nitric oxide pressure. The branching ratio collisional transfer into the first and second states of NO was determined, and previously reported rates for quenching of NO by molecular bromine were verified.

At the heart of this training is the Red Flag Measurement and Debriefing System RFMDS and its capability to accurately reconstruct the elements of an intense exercise fought over the deserts of Nevada. This research designed and prototyped an OODBMS technology base to store and retrieve various types of domain artifacts for domain-oriented application composition systems (DOACS). We developed object-oriented database schemas for a validating domain and the Object-Connection-Update software architecture. We implemented an inheritance relationship between the schemas so a domain model can inherit an architectural structure from an architecture model allowing us to isolate domain-specific knowledge from architecture-specific knowledge. This research effort addresses modeling of the transportation of air pollution in the atmosphere and the numerical analysis of the partial differential equations used in such modeling. Three Gaussian models are examined and compared using example problems. Several finite difference schemes are developed to solve the partial differential equations used in air pollution transport modeling. This study examines three Gaussian models SCREEN, AFTOX, and the program GAUSPLUM. In this thesis, a class of time series models for forecasting a hurricanes future position based on its previous positions and a generalized model of hurricane motion are examined and extended. Results of a literature review suggest that meteorological models continue to increase in complexity while few statistical approaches, such as linear regression, have been successfully applied. An exception is provided by a certain class of time series models that appear to forecast storms almost as well as current meteorological models without their tremendous complexity. This research presents a multiresolution wavelet analysis tool for analyzing motion in time sequential imagery. A theoretical framework is developed for constructing an L2R wavelet multiresolution analysis from three non-identical spatial and temporal L2R wavelet multiresolution analyses. This framework provides the flexibility to tailor the spatio-temporal frequency characteristics of the three dimensional wavelet filter to match the frequency behavior of the analyzed signal. An unconventional, discrete multiresolution wavelet decomposition algorithm is developed which yields a rich set of independent spatio-temporally oriented frequency channels for analyzing, the size and speed characteristics of moving objects. A numerical analysis of the aerodynamic phenomena associated with the high-speed flight of a sharp-nosed, four-finned, high-fineness ratio missile using a block-structured, parallel computer algorithm is presented. The algorithm, PANS-3EM, utilizes a second-order-accurate, shock-capturing, Total Variation Diminishing scheme and incorporates a Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model. PANS-3EM allows for extreme flexibility in the choice of computational domain decomposition and computing machine of implementation. Developmental work consists of conceptualization and verification of the algorithm as well as parallel performance and scalability studies conducted on a variety of computing platforms. The liquid crystal display LCD from an inexpensive pocket television was converted to a spatial light modulator SLM for the purpose of altering the phase front of a ten element diode laser array to produce a single lobe far field pattern. Characterization of the SLM determined the amount of phase shift, amplitude modulation and polarization rotation properties. Nonuniformities within the phase shifter and insufficient phase shift prevented the formation of a single lobe. However, a very limited phase grating was created and analyzed. LCDs from inexpensive commercial pocket televisions were found unsuitable for use as phase shifting spatial light modulators.

This study investigated the interaction of shock waves with L-shaped structures using the CTH hydrodynamics code developed by Sandia National Laboratories. Computer models of shock waves traveling through air were developed using techniques similar to shock tube experiments. Models of L-shaped buildings were used to determine overpressures achieved by the reflecting shock versus angle of incidence of the shock front. An L-shaped building model rotated 45 degrees to the planar shock front produced the highest reflected overpressure of 9.73 atmospheres in the corner joining the two wings, a value 9.5 times the incident overpressure of 1.02 atmospheres. This program uses the object-oriented extension of the expert system tool known as the C Language Integrated Production System CLIPS. This effort rose out of the need for creating and integrating semi-autonomous forces for the Distributed Interactive System DIS. This thesis describes the basic maneuvers a pilot uses in present air-to-air combat. This research addressed the development of a parallel computational fluid dynamics unstructured grid generator using Delaunay triangulation. The generator is applied to simple elliptical and cylindrical two-dimensional bodies. The methodologies used included Watsons point insertion algorithm, Holmes and Snyders point creation algorithm, a discretized surface definition, Andersons clustering function, and a Laplacian smoother. The first version of the software involved a processor boundary exchange at the end of each iteration with no inter-processor communications during the iterations The second version used inter-processor communication during each iteration instead of the boundary exchange.
