A Geomagnetic Survey Of Parts Of Pierce, Benson, Sheridan And Wells Counties, Harald C. Haraldson Jan 1953

A Geomagnetic Survey Of Parts Of Pierce, Benson, Sheridan And Wells Counties, Harald C. Haraldson

Theses and Dissertations

A magnetometer survey in respect to oil exploration is a regional reconnaissance tool and, therefore, it is customary to check an interesting magnetic anomaly with a seismograph or gravimeter. An exception to this is found in micro magnetic surveys which, because of their detailed nature 28 nature, may serve as a cheek on the other types of geophysical surveying.

The two large magnetic highs may be more areas in the basement rocks, and they may indicate structure. However, the large eastward-trending magnetic high area on the west side of the map area is quite possibly due to a regional increase …

Ultraviolet Absorption Spectra Of Quinoxaline And Some Of Its Derivatives, Fred Dale Huillet Jan 1953

Ultraviolet Absorption Spectra Of Quinoxaline And Some Of Its Derivatives, Fred Dale Huillet

Theses and Dissertations

A long term research program into the chemistry of quinoxalines has been instituted at Brigham Young University with the aim of preparing the vinylquinoxalines so that their 1,4-addition reactions might be studied. The literature of quinoxaline chemistry has been thoroughly reviewed and assembled. Methods of preparing 2-methyl- and 2,3-dimethylquinoxaline have been studied and improved but all attempts to prepare the vinylquinoxalines have been unsuccessful. In the course of these attempts several compounds of unknown structure were prepared. The purpose of this investigation is to study the spectra of various known quinoxaline derivatives and to attempt to identify the unknowns by …

Collector-Depressant Equilibria For The Flotation System Potassium Ethyl Xanthate-Potassium Cyanide-Molybdenite, Connell Bolton Roberts

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation involves a study of the collector-depressant equilibria of the flotation system potassium ethyl xanthate-potassium cyanide-molybdenite, based upon mineral-air bubble contact measurements made by a modified captive bubble technique. The Cook theory of single site free acid adsorption is used to interpret the data. The standard free energies of adsorption of ethyl xanthic acid and hydrocyanic acid on molybdenite are calculated.

Thermodynamic Properties Of Water Absorbed On Silica, Conrad V. Hatch Aug 1952

Thermodynamic Properties Of Water Absorbed On Silica, Conrad V. Hatch

Theses and Dissertations

The object of the work presented in this thesis was to obtain quantitative values of the thermodynamic changes in water upon adsorption by silica. Two methods were used. The first was a determination of the differential entropy and heat of adsorption independent of any theory of adsorption. The second method included a new interpretation of the "c" constant of the Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller Theory in which c was expressed in terms of the standard free energy of adsorption. The experimental data gave satisfactory results in determining the differential heat and entropy of adsorption. The results obtained in determining the …

Collector-Depressant Equilibria In The Flotation Of Molybdenite, Robert Létrenne Andelin

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation presents the results of research on the flotation system potassium n-amyl xanthate - sodium sulfide - molybdenite. The purposes of the research were (1) to determine the theoretical collector-depressant equilibria conditions of this system necessary for the flotation or depression of molybdenite, (2) to ascertain the mechanism of adsorption or the collector potassium n-amyl xanthate and the depressant sodium sulfide on molybdenite, and (3) to calculate the standard free energy of adsorption on molybdenite of the collector and depressant in this system. To accomplish these purposes it was necessary to develop a satisfactory experimental method for the controlled …

Further Studies Of The Reactions Of Quinoxaline And 2-Methylquinoxaline, Marcus N. Myers Apr 1952

Further Studies Of The Reactions Of Quinoxaline And 2-Methylquinoxaline, Marcus N. Myers

Theses and Dissertations

The present investigation was also made with the object of preparing the vinylquinoxalines and studying their 1,4- addition reactions. The attempts to prepare vinylquinoxalines were unsuccessful. However, sodium acetylide reacted with 2,3-dichloroquinoxaline to give a new compound which (from its analysis and properties) appears to be 2,3-bis(1-hydroxyethyl) quinoxaline . This new compound should be investigated further , as it may prove to be an intermediate in the preparation of vinylquinoxalines. The preparation of 2-methylquinoxaline has become very simple by the use of the method of Jones, Kornfeld and McLaughlin^5, which consists of condensing o-phenylenediamine with pyruvic aldehyde. The condensation of …

Solubility Product Constants Of The Metallic Sulfides, Marvin Bernard Gordon Aug 1951

Solubility Product Constants Of The Metallic Sulfides, Marvin Bernard Gordon

Theses and Dissertations

A survey of the chemical literature revealed a lack of agreement in the values reported by various investigators for the solubility product constants of the metallic sulfides. The object of this thesis was to obtain a reliable set of solubility product constant values for the metallic sulfides by means of thermodynamic calculations. Of considerable importance in calculating the values of the solubility product constants of the metallic sulfides is the value of the standard free energy of formation of the sulfide ion. A critical review of the values that have been reported by various investigators for this constant , including …

An Electrochemical Determination Of The Free Energy Of Formation And Solubility Product Constant Of Silver And Mercury Sulfides, Earl Lloyd Gray May 1950

An Electrochemical Determination Of The Free Energy Of Formation And Solubility Product Constant Of Silver And Mercury Sulfides, Earl Lloyd Gray

Theses and Dissertations

Because present data on free energy of formation and solubility product constants of the metal sulfides are both inconsistent and based on very old experimental data, a new study using modern techniques is amply justified. Because metal sulfide precipitates are often colloidal and becasue the solubility of these sulfides is so low, ordinary physical and analytical methods are not applicable to a direct determination fo the solubility product constant. Therefore, a more reliable thermodynamic approach was undertaken in this study. The standard free energy of formation of silver and mercury sulfide was determined from electromotive force measurements of suitable galvanic …

Further Studies Of The Reactions Of Quinoxaline, 2-Methyl-, And 2,3-Dimethylquinoxaline, Chester E. Hamilton

Theses and Dissertations

A long term research program into the chemistry of quinoxalines has been instituted at Brigham Young University. The literature of quinoxaline chemistry was reviewed and assembled in one paper. Methods of preparation of 2,3-dimethyl- and 2- methylquinoxaline were studied and improved. The bromination of 2,3-dimethylquinoxaline using N-bromosuccinimide was accomplished and an anil addition using quinoxaline and phenyllithium was achieved. Efforts to prepare vinylquinoxalines were unsuccessful. In order to pursue an investigation into the numerous reactions of the 1,4 addition type, a method of preparations of vinyl-quinoxalines must be achieved. In the present investigation, various methods of synthesis of vinyl- and …

An Electrochemical Determination Of The Thermodynamic Properties Of Silver And Mercury Sulfides, Arthur G. Cole Sep 1949

An Electrochemical Determination Of The Thermodynamic Properties Of Silver And Mercury Sulfides, Arthur G. Cole

Theses and Dissertations

The problem consists of measuring accurately the free energy of formation, heat of formation, entropy, and solubility product constant of silver and mercury sulfides, and is a part of a larger study extending to many other metal sulfides. The confusion now existing in the chemical literature amply justifies a study of this nature. The thermodynamic properties of several important metal sulfides have never been measured, and the only values available for them are estimates. Determinations of the properties of many other metal sulfides have been carried out, but the results given by different authors often differ widely.

Factors Influencing The Solubility And Oxidation Of Commercial Iron Pyrites, Neldon Lamont Jensen Aug 1949

Factors Influencing The Solubility And Oxidation Of Commercial Iron Pyrites, Neldon Lamont Jensen

Theses and Dissertations

Studies were made (1) to determine the effect of air and oxygen and verying concentrations in distilled water, on the solubility of iron pyrites; (2) to determine the effect of acid, base and buffer solutions of varying pH; (3) to observe the effect of some oxidizing and reducing agents on the solubility of iron pyrites. These investigations would aid in deciding the possibilities of using iron pyrites as a soil conditioner.

The Chromatographic Separation Of Gilsonite, Harold Albert Bezzant May 1949

The Chromatographic Separation Of Gilsonite, Harold Albert Bezzant

Theses and Dissertations

Separation of natural hydrocarbon minerals into their constituents non-destructively is a very difficult problem. A non-destructive analysis of the hydrocarbon minerals is essential to their wise utilization. Chromatography represents a non-destructive means of separating adsorbable substances non-destructively with a high degree of purity. The chromatographic separation is based upon the simple principle of the difference in adsorption affinity of compounds for a particular adsorbent. The chromatographic separation of gilsonite was, therefore, undertaken in an effort to prove that the adsorbable compounds of this hydrocarbon mineral could be separated by this simple non-destructive method. The first chromatographic columns of alumina, silica …

The Preparation Of M-Ethylphenol And M-Phenylphenol From Resorcinol, Ronald Kenith Robins May 1949

The Preparation Of M-Ethylphenol And M-Phenylphenol From Resorcinol, Ronald Kenith Robins

Theses and Dissertations

The lack of a convenient method for the synthesis of m-alkylphenols has long been recognized by organic chemists. Within recent years the study of the physiological properties of these compounds and their derivatives, particularly the curare analogues, has caused much more concern to be placed upon a satisfactory method of synthesis. The problem of their synthesis offered an interesting study in synthetic organic chemistry. Both groupd, the alkyl group and the hydroxyl group of a meta-alkylated phenol, direct to the ortho and para positions. This makes it impossible to prepare the m-alkylphenols by the usual procedures employed in the synthesis …

Studies Of Some Reactions Of Quinoxaline, 2-Methyl-, And 2,3-Dimethylquinoxaline, Delos Edward Bown Jan 1949

Studies Of Some Reactions Of Quinoxaline, 2-Methyl-, And 2,3-Dimethylquinoxaline, Delos Edward Bown

Theses and Dissertations

Although many compounds have been prepared which contain the heterocyclic nucleus known as the quinoxaline nucleus, very little fundamental experimentation has been reported by way of expanding the chemistry of quinoxaline beyond the basic condensation reaction and its valuable use as a means of characterization, for example, the reaction of vicinal diketones with o-phenylenediamine. Also, no know effort has been made to assemble the chemistry of the quinoxalines into one paper for ready reference. Additional interest is concerned with the chemotherapeutic value of basically substituted quinoxalines^1; however, this aspect of the problem will not be discussed. The chemistry of quinoxaline …

A Study Of Fossil Resins In Huntington Canyon Coal, Ross D. Gardner Jun 1948

A Study Of Fossil Resins In Huntington Canyon Coal, Ross D. Gardner

Theses and Dissertations

The object of this investigation was to determine whether or not a certain sample of raw resin, collected by Mr. Adriaan Nagelvoort from coal from Huntington Canyon, Emery County, Utah, could be separated into more than one fraction with each fraction having distinctly different properties. Three methods of separation were attempted: (l) Separation of specific gravity fractions, (2) separation by use of solvents, and (3) chromatographic separation. Properties determined as a means of establishing any differences in the resins were: solubility, softening points, acid numbers, and iodine numbers.

An Investigation Of Phosphate Adsorption By The Clays Montmorillonite And Kaolinite /|Cby Gordon Richard Bradford, G. R. Bradford Jun 1948

An Investigation Of Phosphate Adsorption By The Clays Montmorillonite And Kaolinite /|Cby Gordon Richard Bradford, G. R. Bradford

Theses and Dissertations

Clay minerals have widespread application in industry and play an important role in plant life (2, 17). It is the adsorptive capacity of clay which determines largely its importance to man (2). The purpose of this investigation is to interpret the mechanism of adsorption of the phosphate anion by the two clay minerals montmorillonite and kaolinite. This particular system was singled out for two reasons: 1. It has agricultural significance. 2. It is believed that if the particular phosphate adsorption mechanism is understood it will aid in an understanding of many other adsorption phenomena associated with clay.

Studies In The Determination Of Iodine In Soils Organic Materials, And Waters, Russell T. Lundell Aug 1946

Studies In The Determination Of Iodine In Soils Organic Materials, And Waters, Russell T. Lundell

Theses and Dissertations

A summary of the literature on the nutritional value of iodine in the diet of various forms of life is given. The majority of evidence indicates that iodine is an essential element in plant and animal nutrition. It functions particularly in animal metabolism in the form of thyroxine. The occurrence of iodine in a nature has been briefly discussed. Investigations made in this regard indicate iodine to be almost universally distributed in very minute amounts. Most iodine salts are soluble in water and their distribution is affected by water movements. Results of iodine determinations made during the course of this …

A Study Of Form And Content For A Laboratory Manual To Be Used By Students In General Chemistry Laboratory, Berne P. Broadbent Jan 1946

A Study Of Form And Content For A Laboratory Manual To Be Used By Students In General Chemistry Laboratory, Berne P. Broadbent

Theses and Dissertations

This investigation was carried out for general chemistry classes in which recitation and laboratory work are closely integrated and in which very close supervision is given to laboratory classes. Results indicate that there are fewer failures under these conditions if students do individual work. Students receiving grades of over 80% seem to work just as effectively in pairs as they do when working individually, but about 5% who fail when working in pairs could, apparently obtain grades above 60% if they did individual work. The formal full statement type of report is substantially more effective than the questionaire report as …

The Preparation And Properties Of Diphenylthiocarbazone, Floyd C. Mcintire Jan 1937

The Preparation And Properties Of Diphenylthiocarbazone, Floyd C. Mcintire

Theses and Dissertations

At present the chemical literature offers no method for the preparation of diphenylthiocarbazone, or dithizone, sufficiently detailed to guide the average laboratory technician in an economical and successful preparation of this compound. The high price of dithizone and the limited number of dispensers of it emphasize the need of such a method. The original research reported in this thesis was done primarily in an attempt to formulate a satisfactory detailed method for the preparation of dithizone. The suggestions of Emil Fischer were followed and an attampt was made to improve his outline and to note the possible errors so that …

A Study Of The Colloid Obtained From Weathered Lignite, Cecil O. Lohn Jan 1932

A Study Of The Colloid Obtained From Weathered Lignite, Cecil O. Lohn

Theses and Dissertations

When Lignite is exposed to the action of weather it undergoes various changes, probably due to oxidation. Surface beds of lignite are often rejected by the miners as inferior coal, due to the weathered condition. But when this weathered lignite is treated with sodium hydroxide, and the resulting solution allowed to evaporate to dryness, there is left a hard, shiny substance very similar in appearance to hard coal. This dried product has been exploited under the name of Dakolite. When dispersed in water this product makes a very good wood stain.

Tests made on Dakolite show that it has colloidal …

Iron And Cobalt Salts As Catalysts In The Oxidation Of Sodium Sulfite By Free Oxygen, Loren C. Bryner Jan 1930

Iron And Cobalt Salts As Catalysts In The Oxidation Of Sodium Sulfite By Free Oxygen, Loren C. Bryner

Theses and Dissertations

The present investigation was carried out to show the catalytic effect of some iron and cobalt salts on the oxidation of sodium sulfite solutions by free oxygen. The rate of reaction was determined by measuring the volume of water required to replace the absorbed oxygen. A photograph and diagrammatical arrangement of the apparatus is given, (Page 14). From the preliminary experiments it was found that the rate of oxidation of sodium sulfite solutions is dependent upon concentration, and speed of the shaker.
