Packet Traffic Features Of Ipv6 And Ipv4 Protocol Traffic, Cebrai̇l Çi̇fli̇kli̇, Ali̇ Gezer, Abdullah Tuncay Özşahi̇n

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Nowadays, the IPv6 protocol is in a transition phase in operational networks. The ratio of its traffic volume is increasing day by day. The many provided facilities for IPv6 connection increasethe total IPv6 traffic load. IPv6-over-IPv4 tunnels, pilot programsto provide IPv6 connections, IPv6/IPv4 dual stack operating systems, and free IPv6 tunnel brokers cause the IPv6 protocol to expand quickly. For efficient resource utilization, the characteristics of network traffic should be determined accurately. Many traffic characterization studies regarding IPv4 have demonstrated that most of the network traffic is self-similar. Self-similarity causes significant impacts on network performance. With the increasing volume of IPv6 …

Neutral Current Wave Shape Analysis Using Wavelet For Diagnosis Of Winding Insulation Of A Transformer, Patthi Sridhar, Birendra Prasad Singh, Pulapa Venkata Kanaka Rao

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Insulation failure within the windings of a power transformer arises due to over voltages, under voltages, notches, glitches, etc. A widely used technique to detect these power transformer insulation failures during an impulse test is the comparison of neutral current waveforms. Any shift in the recorded waveforms between reduced and full voltage confirms the existence of a fault in the windings. Hence, a proper analysis of neutral current waveforms is necessary to assess the condition of the insulation of power transformer winding. In order to carry out a wave shape analysis, a 61 MVA, 11.5/230 kV generator transformer is used …

Finite Element Modeling Of A Superconducting Fault Current Limiter, Lale Ergene, J. Keith Nelson, Raghunath Parthasarathi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper summarizes the work done to show finite element modeling results on a high temperature superconductor fault current limiter (FCL). The paper also gives the small mock-up design of the matrix FCL and its finite element model (FEM). It also discusses the limitations of the FEM and explains how the results from the FEM compare with the experimental data derived for the configuration. A 3-dimensional FEM has been used because of the structure of the real geometry, which does not show any plane or axisymmetric features.

Context Gathering And Management For Centralized Context-Aware Handover In Heterogeneous Mobile Networks, Behrouz Shahgholi Ghahfarokhi, Naser Movahhedinia

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Context-aware handover decision has recently been considered as a candidate for next-generation heterogeneous wireless networks. The context-aware handover methods proposed in the literature differ in some aspects, including the location of the handover decision (distributed or centralized). Depending on the location of the decision point, the appropriate part of the context knowledge should be transferred in those methods. This paper proposes a context gathering mechanism for a policy-based context-aware handover method, which implements mobile-initiated and network assisted handover. The proposed network context gathering mechanism is based on a media-independent handover (MIH) framework and the paper justifies the usability of the …

Skewed Alpha-Stable Distributions For Modeling And Classification Of Musical Instruments, Mehmet Erdal Özbek, Mehmet Emre Çek, Feri̇t Acar Savaci

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Music information retrieval and particularly musical instrument classification has become a very popular research area for the last few decades. Although in the literature many feature sets have been proposed to represent the musical instrument sounds, there is still need to find a superior feature set to achieve better classification performance. In this paper, we propose to use the parameters of skewed alpha-stable distribution of sub-band wavelet coefficients of musical sounds as features and show the effectiveness of this new feature set for musical instrument classification. We compare the classification performance with the features constructed from the parameters of generalized …

Localized Power-Aware Routing With An Energy-Efficient Pipelined Wakeup Schedule For Wireless Sensor Networks, Taner Çevi̇k, Abdül Hali̇m Zai̇m, Derya Yiltaş

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Depending on the evolutions in electronics, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have been very popular in many areas of human life such as health, industry, and military. This popularity has drawn the attention of many researchers toward WSNs. WSNs are especially favorable in conditions in which it is physically difficult and dangerous for human beings to gather information. Therefore, the lifetime of those networks must be as long as possible, since it would also be infeasible to replace the energy-depleted sensors with new ones, as they may be deployed in such geographical areas that are difficult and dangerous for human beings …

A Novel Approach For Optimal Allocation Of Distributed Generations Based On Static Voltage Stability Margin, Mohsen Rezaie Estabragh, Mohsen Mohammadian, Mehdi Shafiee

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents a newly developed approach to find the optimal location of distributed generations (DGs) to improve power system voltage stability margin and reduce losses incorporating the constraints. The loadability limit index is used to assess the static voltage stability security margin, which is associated with the point of voltage collapse limit. Based on this, a toolbox is developed to recognize the loadability margin in power networks. Finally, the mentioned problem is modeled as a nonlinear and multiobjective optimization problem. The proposed method establishes a tradeoff between the security index and power losses in DG placement using the hybrid …

Application Of The Posicast Control Method To Static Shunt Compensators, Amir Ghorbani, Siamak Masoudi, Arash Shabani

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, the Posicast control method is used for decreasing the reactive power oscillations of static shunt compensators. Shunt compensators such as the static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) and static VAR compensator (SVC) are considered to be FACTS devices. The applied control method decreases the amount of oscillations in the outputs of STATCOM and SVC considerably, with fast damping. In this paper, a PI controller is added to the model to decrease the sensitivity of the Posicast controller to the parameter variations and plant model mismatch. Simplicity and applicability are the main features of this controller. The model is simulated …

Identification Of Linear Dynamic Systems Using The Artificial Bee Colony Algorithm, Özden Erçi̇n, Ramazan Çoban

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents an investigation into the development of system identification using the artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm. A system identification task can be formulated as an optimization problem where the objective is to obtain a model and a set of parameters that minimize the prediction error between the measured plant outputs and the model outputs. The most common existing system identification approaches, such as the recursive least squares method and autoregressive exogenous method, are substantially analytical and based on a mathematical derivation of the system's model. Evolutionary computation, which seems to be a very promising approach, is an alternative …

Analysis, Nonlinear Control, And Chaos Generator Circuit Of Another Strange Chaotic System, İhsan Pehli̇van, Zhouchao Wei

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, we introduce a new 3-dimensional quadratic continuous autonomous chaotic system. This system can generate strange and interesting attractors. Some basic dynamical properties, such as bifurcations, and chaotic behaviors of the new chaotic system are investigated analytically and numerically. We propose a nonlinear control scheme to discuss codimension 1 and 2 Hopf bifurcations. In addition, a new circuit implementation of the chaotic attractor is reported and examined in PSpice. The new system is suitable for purposefully generating chaos in chaos-based engineering applications.

Resolution Enhancement Of Video Sequences By Using Discrete Wavelet Transform And Illumination Compensation, Sara Izadpanahi, Çağri Özçinar, Gholamreza Anbarjafari, Hasan Demirel

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This research paper proposes a new technique for video resolution enhancement that employees an illumination compensation procedure before the registration process. After the illumination compensation process, the respective frames are registered using the Irani and Peleg technique. In parallel, the corresponding frame is decomposed into high-frequency (low-high, high-low, and high-high) and low-frequency (low-low) subbands using discrete wavelet transform (DWT). The high-frequency subbands are superresolved using bicubic interpolation. Afterwards, the interpolated high-frequency subbands and superresolved low-frequency subband obtained by registration are used to construct the high-resolution frame using inverse DWT. The superiority of the proposed resolution enhancement method over well-known video …

Symbolic Regression Of Crop Pest Forecasting Using Genetic Programming, Basim Alhadidi, Alaa Alafeef, Heba Al-Hiari Jan 2012

Symbolic Regression Of Crop Pest Forecasting Using Genetic Programming, Basim Alhadidi, Alaa Alafeef, Heba Al-Hiari

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, we propose and evaluate a mathematical model that describes the reported data on crop pests to get an accurate prediction of production costs, food safety, and the protection of the environment. Meteorological factors are not the only things that affect a bumper harvest; it is also affected by crop plant diseases and insect pests. Studies show that relying solely on the naked-eye observations of experts to forecast well-planned agriculture is not always sufficient to achieve effective control. Providing fast, automatic, cheap, and accurate artificial intelligence-based solutions for that task can be of great realistic significance. The proposed …

Partial transmit sequence (PTS) is an attractive scheme for peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) reduction in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, but its high computational complexity to find optimum phase factors is the main drawback. In this paper, we propose PTS based on an artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm (ABC-PTS) for reducing the computational complexity of the PTS in the OFDM system. The ABC-PTS was compared to conventional PTS using a random search strategy (RS-PTS) and optimum PTS. In addition, the bit error rate (BER) performance of the ABC-PTS was shown when a high power amplifier (HPA) was used for …

Design And Evaluation Of A Query-Based Jamming Detection Algorithm For Wireless Sensor Networks, Murat Çakiroğlu, Ahmet Turan Özceri̇t

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Jamming attacks, which are the main cause of data corruption and network blockages in wireless sensor networks (WSNs), are one of the most serious threats for WSNs. This type of attack not only blocks the ongoing communication in the network, but also causes the wireless nodes to exhaust their energy much earlier than expected. A countermeasure must be deployed against jamming attacks, especially in military and medical applications in which security breaches cannot be tolerated. In this paper, we have designed a new query-based jamming detection algorithm (QUJDA) to detect jamming attacks occurring in WSNs. QUJDA is an attack detection …

The hybrid filter was built by combining an adaptive finite impulse response (FIR) filter, an adaptive weighted myriad (WMy) filter, and a soft-switching mechanism based on a neuro-fuzzy (NF) network. Performance of the hybrid filter was tested in \alpha-stable noisy situations and compared with adaptive FIR, WMy, and weighted median (WMd) filter performances. According to the simulation results; the proposed hybrid filter has better performance than the adaptive FIR, WMy, and WMd filters, and has the ability of effectively suppressing the …

Co-Occurrence Matrix And Its Statistical Features As A New Approach For Face Recognition, Alaa Eleyan, Hasan Demirel Jan 2011

Co-Occurrence Matrix And Its Statistical Features As A New Approach For Face Recognition, Alaa Eleyan, Hasan Demirel

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, a new face recognition technique is introduced based on the gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM). GLCM represents the distributions of the intensities and the information about relative positions of neighboring pixels of an image. We proposed two methods to extract feature vectors using GLCM for face classification. The first method extracts the well-known Haralick features from the GLCM, and the second method directly uses GLCM by converting the matrix into a vector that can be used in the classification process. The results demonstrate that the second method, which uses GLCM directly, is superior to the first method that …

Adaptive Wiener-Turbo Systems With Jpeg & Bit Plane Compressions In Image Transmission, Ersi̇n Göse Jan 2011

Adaptive Wiener-Turbo Systems With Jpeg & Bit Plane Compressions In Image Transmission, Ersi̇n Göse

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In recent years, for transmission of 2D colored images over the fading channels, a new scheme has been denoted as ``adaptive Wiener-turbo systems with JPEG & bit plane compressions'' (AW-TSwJBC). In this paper, the performance of AW-TSwJBC is introduced over Rician and Rayleigh fading channels. We benefited from the neighborhood relation of pixels for each color plane by using a new iterative block, the ``adaptive Wiener-turbo'' scheme, which employs a turbo decoder, JPEG encoder/decoders, and adaptive Wiener filtering. In our approach, we could also alter compression ratios due to the importance of the image to be transferred. Based on the …

Design And Ground Plane Optimization Of A Cpw-Fed Ultra-Wideband Antenna, Mohammed Al-Husseini, Ali Ramadan, Youssef Tawk, Ali El-Hajj, Karim Y. Kabalan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, an ultra-wideband antenna based on an egg-shaped conductor and a co-planar waveguide (CPW) feed is presented. The ground plane incorporates an egg-shaped slot with parametrized center and dimensions. By resizing the slot and moving its center, a slotted or a partial ground can be obtained. Based on this configuration, a parametric study that aims at achieving the best ultra-wideband (UWB) response of the antenna is done. The study shows that an excellent UWB response is achieved for a certain ground slot size, beyond which the response starts to degrade. However, as the slot size tends to infinity, …
