Ingress Observations Of The 1980 Eclipse Of The Symbiotic Star Ci Cygni, R. E. Stencel, Andrew G. Michalitsianos, Menas Kafatos, Alexander A. Boyarchuk

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Books and Book Chapters

One of the major results from the IUE may prove to be the new knowledge gained by studies of the ultraviolet spectra of symbiotic stars. Symbiotics combine spectral features of a cool M giant-like photosphere with strong high excitation emission lines of nebular origin, superposed. An excellent pre-UV review has been given by Swings (i). The UV spectra are dominated by intense permitted and semi-forbidden emission lines and weak continua indicative of hot compact objects and accretion disks. Two symbiotics, AR Pay and CI Cyg are thought to be eclipsing binaries, and we have begun IUE observations during the predicted …

Tb101: The Relevance Of Option Value In Benefit-Cost Analysis, Stephen D. Reiling, Mark W. Anderson

Technical Bulletins

This publication represents a review and a critical re-evaluation of the literature dealing with option value. This literature is rich and dynamic and provides a fascinating sequence of articles, comments, and rebuttals. Reevaluation of the concept requires a rather comprehensive review of this literature, which is something that has not been provided to date. The literature review is also important because the work of some authors has been systematically overlooked in the course of the debate. As a result of this oversight, the original formulation of the concept continues to be cited in the literature even though its practical significance …

B771: Long-Time Series Temperature And Precipitation Records For Maine, 1808-1978, William R. Baron, David C. Smith, Harold W. Borns Jr., James Fastook, Anne E. Bridges

Bulletins

The purpose of this Bulletin is to reconstruct a series of long run temperature and precipitation instrumental records for Maine (monthly means and accumulations). We hope that the data tables and graphs produced here will be of use to climatologists and other researchers and to Maine residents who are interested in the climatic history of the state. To aid in reconstruction, regional records were formed by grouping records from several geographical locations.

Much of the data reproduced here have been published elsewhere in a wide variety of publications. Some are found easily in libraries while others are not readily available. …

Tb98: Oxygen Diffusion Rate Relationships Under Three Soil Conditions, J. Bornstein, W. E. Hedstrom, F. R. Scott

Technical Bulletins

The objective of this study was to determine the oxygen diffusion rate (ODR)—soil moisture relationship for three sieved, root-free soils to determine if there are basic ODR-soil characteristic differences that might influence data at different soil water contents in the presence of plant roots. Advanced knowledge of ODR-soil moisture relationships would also help scientists to evaluate the effect of variation in the water table on plant growth.

Evaluating Impacts On Continental Shelf Environments, Concepts And Prospects, Donald F. Boesch Jan 1980

Evaluating Impacts On Continental Shelf Environments, Concepts And Prospects, Donald F. Boesch

VIMS Books and Book Chapters

New and expanding activities on the continental shelf including disposal of wastes and dredged material, deepwater ports, floating nuclear power plants, mining, and oil and gas exploitation, have spawned increased interest in the ecology of continental shelf ecosystems and the environmental effects of these activities. Changing patterns of historical uses of the shelf environment, i.e., fishing and transportation, and as yet hypothetical new uses, such as tapping energy from the ocean's currents and gradients, will undoubtedly further increase our concern for the coastal oceans.

Tb94: Chemical And Physical Properties Of The Boothbay, Brayton, Croghan, Monarda, Plaisted, Scantic, And Swanville Soil Mapping Units, R. V. Rourke, K. A. Schmidt

Technical Bulletins

Seven soil mapping units were each sampled at five locations within Maine. The morphology of the soil was described at each site. The profiles were sampled on a horizonal basis from the soil surface to a depth of 100 cm. The soil samples were taken to the laboratory where their chemical and physical properties were determined. Weighted means and weighted standard deviations were determined for several soil properties. Soil profile descriptions and chemical and physical soil data are presented for each sample site.

Technical Bulletins

In this study the components of cation exchange capacity (CEC) were measured in an acid spodosol to determine (1) the increase in KC1-CEC in the whole soil when limed, (2) the contribution of the organic fraction to CEC, and (3) the magnitude of CEC reduction by Al and Fe polymers.

Kepone® Residues In Chesapeake Bay Biota, M. E. Bender, R. J. Huggett, W. J. Hargis Jr.

VIMS Books and Book Chapters

Oysters from the James displayed variations in Kepone residue levels related to water temperature and their spawning cycle. Oyster depuralion rates were related to temperature. In summer the "biological half. life" of Kepone in oysters was about one week, while during the winter about 40 days were required for residue levels to decline by 50 per cent. Residues in blue crabs varied as a function of sex, males having considerably higher residues than females. Fin fish levels from the James varied greatly, with residue levels being dependent on species and length of residence for migratory fishes .. Average Kepone residues …
