Flexoelectricity is a property that dielectric materials exhibit where they produce polarization when subject to an inhomogeneous deformation. In the past, this effect has been largely ignored, as its effect in bulk materials has been much less significant than the related effect of piezoelectricity, the polarization of material due to uniform deformation. Interest in flexoelectricity has been increasing in recent years due to the development of nanotechnologies. Focusing on data from an imager and the SABER instrument aboard the TIMED satellite temperature variances are determined to quantify small-scale gravity waves. IDL software was used to extract all the temperature profile measurements that were measured by SABER within a limited geographical area, centered on our ground-based optical imager at Cerro Pachon, Chile (30.3°S, 70.7°S). Large-scale tidal waves, with wavenumbers 0-6, were removed from each profile revealing the gravity wave perturbations. Temperature variances reveal possible increased wave activity due to mountain waves. Mountain waves in the mesosphere are a relatively unexplored field in aeronomy. They are generated predominantly in …

This presentation reports on the results of student research and development in the area of mobile computing for Android devices. Specifically, it discusses students' experience implementing mobile applications on Android smartphones and Google's wearable Glass device. Individual technologies addressed in the presentation are head-mounted computing and displays, voice recognition and control, wireless communication, augmented reality, telepresence, and user interface development. This project was developed in cooperation with the Air Force Research Labs at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

This study was conducted to ascertain the relationship between geology and recovery rates of three selected Cedarville University water supply wells. In order to determine the recovery rates, the three selected wells were individually pumped down and then water level measurements were taken as the water levels rose in the well bore. The collected field data was analyzed and compared to the drillers’ well logs from when the wells were originally drilled. The geologic conditions that were examined for the area immediately surrounding the wells included: bedrock lithology, glacial drift characteristics (type and thickness), ground-surface topography, and bedrock topography. During the last glacial maximum, ice moved south from Canada to cover much of the northern United States. This included the northern and western portions of Ohio. As the ice migrated it picked up Canadian bedrock which it transported and then left in Ohio when the ice retreated. The goal of this project was to determine the provenance (the source of origin) of the glacial material that is located in Greene, Clark, Montgomery, Logan, and Champaign Counties in Ohio. The simplest method of determining stream velocity involves measuring how long it takes a floating object or material to move a certain distance downstream. This study tested a dog toy (mini tennis ball), a 2 inch diameter piece of pumice, a playing card, a full 16.9 oz. water bottle, and milk. The floats were released where the maximum velocity of the stream was found through the use of profiling with a simple flowmeter. The real-time data from a USGS-gaged stream only shows discharge and gage height (stage); it does not show velocity. However, the historic USGS-technician stream-flow-verification data for a …

Cedarcliff Falls Dam is a small man-made masonry dam that was constructed around 1869. The dam impounds a pool of water that is a half-mile long on Massie’s Creek near Cedarville, Ohio. This project’s goal was to ascertain the infill rate and character of the sediment that had built up since 1869. The field work involved the measurement of water depth through the length of the pool in order to create a bottom-contour map. In addition, the sediment type was examined throughout the pool. Glacial till (drift) prospecting has served a major role in corporate mineral exploration, especially for gold and diamond during the past 30 years. It involves analyzing heavy indicator minerals from bulk sampling of various glacial deposits in order to track up ice flow direction to the potential orebody (such as a kimberlite pipe or Cu-Ni deposit), a technique commonly used in Canada but not in the U.S. Heavy minerals including diamond, gold, and native copper have been found in Ohio glacial till; the provenance of these heavy minerals is the Precambrian bedrock north of Ohio. In the fall of 2012, the CU Environmental Geology class did an assignment which produced a bathymetry (bottom-contour) map of Cedar Lake. Although the depth measurements using stadia rods and the position measurements using handheld GPS units were somewhat crude, the end result was a map that seemed to be a very reasonable depiction on the lake bottom configuration. In the fall 2014, measurements were again made as a part of an ongoing assessment to determine if sediment infill was occurring in the lake. A direct energy calculation at the valence level [1] had been applied to La-. Uniform application of pesticides in vineyard and orchard systems can be difficult to achieve due to variability in the density and structure of the crop canopy. Depending on the equipment used and environmental conditions, applications can result in poor spray coverage, spray drift, and wasted spray which, in turn, are manifested as a combination of poor pesticide efficacy, economic losses and potential environmental problems for the grower. In recent years, the Santa Monica Mountains (SMM) have been plagued by frequent wildfires which threaten the native chaparral species. Nonsprouting chaparral species are completely killed by a fire, but their seeds germinate in response to fire cues. Facultative sprouters both resprout after a wildfire and release seeds that germinate post-fire. This project is based on data collected since 1986 at a biological preserve adjacent to the Malibu campus of Pepperdine University with an average fire return interval of 7.5 years. A series of bis-ligated magnesium complexes supported by tridentate ketoiminates containing electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups were prepared. The complexes were characterized with 1H, 13C, and 19F NMR, absorbance spectroscopy, and x-ray crystallography. The complexes were assessed for their ring opening polymerization activity with L-lactide (L-lac) and ϵ-caprolactone (eCL) in binary catalyst systems with 4-fluorophenol at 100 °C. The magnesium complexes supported by ketoiminates bearing electron-donating groups yielded greater percentage conversions from monomers to polymers than those containing electron-withdrawing groups for both L-lac and eCL. The magnesium complexes were more efficient at polymerizing L-lac than eCL, and …

Using a combination of permaculture design principles and simple tech solutions, this settlement will be capable of supporting its inhabitants “off the grid”, or with no reliance on outside public utilities. El Niño and the Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is a cycle that is initiated in the equatorial Pacific Ocean and is recognized on interannual timescales by oscillating patterns in tropical Pacific sea surface temperatures (SST) and atmospheric circulations. Using correlation and regression analysis of datasets that include SST’s and other interdependent variables including precipitation, surface winds, sea level pressure, this research seeks to quantify recent changes in ENSO behavior. Specifically, the amplitude, frequency of occurrence, and spatial characteristics (i.e. events with maximum amplitude in the Central Pacific versus the Eastern Pacific) are investigated.

DNA-binding and RNA-binding proteins are usually considered ‘undruggable’ partly due to the lack of an efficient method to identify inhibitors from existing small molecule repositories. Here we report a rapid and sensitive high-throughput screening approach to identify compounds targeting protein–nucleic acids interactions based on protein–DNA or protein–RNA interaction enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (PDI-ELISA or PRI-ELISA). We validated the PDI-ELISA method using the mammalian highmobility- group protein AT-hook 2 (HMGA2) as the protein of interest and netropsin as the inhibitor of HMGA2–DNA interactions. Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a Gram-negative bacterium, an opportunistic pathogen that infects individuals suffering from reduced immunity or damaged tissue. The treatment of these infections has become a major problem due to its increasing antibiotic resistance. Many multi-drug resistant isolates of P. aeruginosa can thwart most antibiotic classes including ?- lactams, fluoroquinolones, and aminoglycosides. Its ability to combat ?-lactams is in part due to expression of AmpC, a major chromosomally encoded ?-lactamase. The expression of ampC is positively regulated by AmpR. Top predators are best known for their ability to affect their communities through inflicting mortality on prey and inducing behavioral modifications (e.g. risk effects). Recent scientific evidence suggests that predators may have additional roles in bottom-up processes such as transporting materials within and across habitat boundaries. The Florida Coastal Everglades (FCE) is an “upside-down” oligotrophic estuary where productivity decreases from the mouth of the estuary to freshwater marshes.
