Analysis Of Foraging Behavior Of Cattle Using A Wearable Camera Under Diverse Vegetation, S. Ogura, R. Futahashi, Masato Yayota, T. Shishido
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
Although it is important to estimate the ingested plant species and the amount of forage intake by grazing animals, recording these items at the 1-bite scale has been difficult under diverse vegetation. Recent research confirmed that a small and inexpensive wearable camera is useful to determine ingested plant species and their proportion in total bites with high accuracy. In this study, we attempted to generate bite codes for cattle under diverse vegetation using wearable cameras. We used two cows which had a grazing experience in the previous year (GE) and the other two which had no grazing experience (NE). They …

IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
In a diverse pasture of complementary species (DPCS), individual species fulfil agro-ecological functions that confer growth asynchrony and complementarity of ecosystem functions. These attributes provide yield consistency with a more even forage supply pattern across the year compared to monocultures. A common leaf regrowth stage window opportunity (LSWO) for the diverse species enables pasture defoliation that stimulates growth and persistence. The study assessed seasonal and annual growth traits of Lolium perenne (Lp), Bromus valdivianus (Bv) and Dactylis glomerata (Dg) as single grass species (Mono) sown with Trifolium repens (Tr) and as DPCS with the four species (Lp+Bv+Dg+Tr=Mix). The defoliation criteria …

Effect Of Low Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound (Lipus) And Emdogain On Root Resorption In Amelogenin Knockout (Amex) Mice, Caitlin Huynh
Annual Research Symposium
In amelogenesis imperfecta, mutations are often found in the amelogenin gene. Inactivation of this amelogenin gene in 6-12 month old mice has led to root resorption in teeth and an increased number of osteoclasts in their bones. The objective of this study was to determine whether local injection of Emdogain (EMD) and low intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) application to the jaw has a synergistic effect on the regeneration of root resorption (RR) in Amelogenin knockout (AMEX) mice; the ideal model representing Amelogenesis Imperfecta.

Chromatin Pattern Quantification For The Differentiation Of White Blood Cells, Paul Young, Ryan Cordner, Abigail Gordhamer
Annual Research Symposium
Nuclear chromatin patterns have been used historically to distinguish between different developmental stages and lineages of white blood cells. While it is common to characterize cells based on arbitrary ‘open’ or ‘closed’ chromatin patterns, quantification of chromatin data is lacking. By extracting nuclei from a database of white blood cells and running fractal analyses using TWOMBLI, we were able to produce meaningful data quantifying chromatin patterns. Our data were put through a random forest algorithm which grouped each point based on relationship probability. The algorithm compared immature and mature cell types as well as cells of similar maturity and differing …

Pharmacognosy And Trichomoniasis: A Scoping Review Protocol, Claire Hartwell, Melanie Arslanian, Brad Haubrich
Annual Research Symposium
Trichomoniasis, also called “trich”, is the most common non-viral sexually transmitted infection (STI). Its etiological agent is the protozoan parasite Trichomonas vaginalis, against which first-line antiparasitics usually work. However, resistance is on the rise. Trich has traditionally been considered a nuisance infection, with many (particularly AMAB patients) being asymptomatic. But research in recent years has begun to unravel correlations of trichomonal infections with a myriad of comorbitidies, including infertility, cancers, the pathogenesis of AIDS, and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). Between the rise of drug resistance and the incidence of these comorbidities, new treatments are needed. In this work, we are …
