High-resolution (Theta = 4 arcseconds .4 x 3 arcseconds .1) CO observations of the IR luminous system VV 114 (IC 1623) using the Owens Valley Millimeter array reveal 5.1 x 1010 Solar masses of H2 in a 5.9 x 3.1 kpc (15 arcseconds x 8 arcseconds) bar with two 4-6 kpc long tails (D = 80 Mpc for H 0= 75). The wide separation (6 kpc) of the merging optical galaxies, the extended gas distribution, and the noncircular gas kinematics suggest that VV 114 is in an early stage of a gas-rich merger. The concentration of gas and its dominance …

Multiple Hadron Production By 14.5 Gev Electron And Positron Scattering From Nuclear Targets, P V. Degtyarenko, J Button-Shafer, L Elouadrhiri, R A. Miskimen, Gerald Alvin Peterson, K Wang Aug 1994

Multiple Hadron Production By 14.5 Gev Electron And Positron Scattering From Nuclear Targets, P V. Degtyarenko, J Button-Shafer, L Elouadrhiri, R A. Miskimen, Gerald Alvin Peterson, K Wang

Gerald Alvin Peterson

Multiple proton and pion electroproduction from nuclei are studied. Final states including at least two protons produced by the interaction of 14.5 GeV electrons and positrons with light nuclei (mainly 12C and 16O) have been measured, and compared with analogous data from 40Ar. Scattered electrons and positrons were detected in the energy transfer range from 0.2 to 12.5 GeV, and four-momentum transfer squared range from 0.1 to 5.0 GeV2/c2. Phenomenological characteristics of the secondary hadron production cross sections such as temperature and velocity of the effective source of hadrons were found to be dependent on energy transfer to the nucleus …

Investigation Of The Charge Transfer Properties Of Electrodes Modified By The Spontaneous Adsorption Of Unsymmetrical Dialkyl Sulfides, Minhui Zhang, Mark Anderson

Mark R. Anderson

Electrodes modified by the spontaneous adsorption of unsymmetrical dialkyl sulfides are used to investigate two monolayer properties, structural disorder and solvent compatibility, that may be of importance in determining the ability for faradaic charge transport to occur in the presence of the monolayer. Two groups of dialkyl sulfides are prepared and studied: a purely hydrocarbon dialkyl sulfide with the structure CH3(CH2)17S(CH2)nCH3, where n, = 7,9, and 17, and an acid containing dialkyl sulfide with the structure CH3(CH2)17S(CH2)mCOOH, where m = 7, 10, and 15. Reflection infrared spectroscopy of the hydrocarbon dialkyl sulfide reveals that the monolayer structure is disordered, when …

Compositional Short-Range Ordering In Metallic Alloys: Band-Filling, Charge-Transfer, And Size Effects From A First-Principles All-Electron Landau-Type Theory, J. B. Staunton, Duane D. Johnson, F. J. Pinski Jul 1994

Compositional Short-Range Ordering In Metallic Alloys: Band-Filling, Charge-Transfer, And Size Effects From A First-Principles All-Electron Landau-Type Theory, J. B. Staunton, Duane D. Johnson, F. J. Pinski

Duane D. Johnson

Using a mean-field statistical description, we derive a general formalism to investigate atomic short-range order in alloys based on a density-functional description of the finite-temperature, grand potential of the random alloy. This ‘‘first-principles,’’ Landau-type approach attempts to treat several contributions (electronic structure, Fermi surface, electrostatics, magnetism, etc.) to the electronic energy on an equal footing. An important ingredient for the statistical averaging is the replacement of the molecular mean fields (Weiss fields) with Onsager cavity fields, which forces the diagonal part of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem to be obeyed. To show its general applicability and usefulness, we apply the theory to …

First-Principles All-Electron Theory Of Atomic Short-Range Ordering In Metallic Alloys: D022- Versus L12-Like Correlations, Duane D. Johnson, J. B. Staunton, F. J. Pinski Jul 1994

First-Principles All-Electron Theory Of Atomic Short-Range Ordering In Metallic Alloys: D022- Versus L12-Like Correlations, Duane D. Johnson, J. B. Staunton, F. J. Pinski

Duane D. Johnson

We use a ‘‘first-principles’’ concentration-wave approach based on a finite-temperature, electronic density-functional, mean-field, grand potential of the random alloy to investigate the high-temperature atomic short-range order (ASRO) in Ni75V25 and Pd75V25 solid solutions. Experimentally, these similar alloys both develop D022-type long-range order at low temperatures but different ASRO at high temperatures. Our calculations describe the measured ASRO well. We compare these results with those found for a hypothetical Co75Ti25 solid solution. Since this alloy orders directly from the melt into the L12 phase, it should exhibit strong L12-like ASRO, as we find in our calculations. We analyze the features in …

Alexander H. King

The surface-induced ordering in thin films of asymmetric deuterated polystyrene (dPS)- poly(viny1pyridine) (PVP) diblock and triblock copolymers of comparable polymerization index and PVP volume fraction - 0.25) was studied using transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, secondary ion massspectrometry, and neutron reflectivity. The morphology of both di- and triblock copolymer films was found to be cylindrical except for the layer adjacent to the silicon oxide surface, which due to the strong interaction of silica with PVP, was lamellar. The spacing between adjacent cylindrical layers was found to be consistent with mean field theory predictions. In the triblock copolymer films the …

Ozone Heating And The Destabilization Of Traveling Waves During Summer, Terrence R. Nathan, Eugene Cordero, Long Li Jul 1994

Ozone Heating And The Destabilization Of Traveling Waves During Summer, Terrence R. Nathan, Eugene Cordero, Long Li

Eugene C. Cordero

The effects of ozone heating on the linear stability of lower stratospheric traveling waves of the summertime, extratropical circulation are examined. Based on coupled equations for the quasigeostrophic potential vorticity and ozone volume mixing ratio, it is shown that the diabatic heating arising from ozone advection can offset the damping due to Newtonian cooling, leading to wave amplification and significant changes in the structure and zonally rectified fluxes of the wave fields in both the lower stratosphere and troposphere. The vertical profile of the zonal mean wind plays a crucial role in determining whether the ozone heating destabilizes eastward and/or …

On A Learnability Question Associated To Neural Networks With Continuous Activations, Bhaskar Dasgupta, Hava Siegelmann, Eduardo Sontag Jun 1994

On A Learnability Question Associated To Neural Networks With Continuous Activations, Bhaskar Dasgupta, Hava Siegelmann, Eduardo Sontag

Hava Siegelmann

This paper deals with learnability of concept classes defined by neural networks, showing the hardness of PAC-learning (in the complexity, not merely information-theoretic sense) for networks with a particular class of activation. The obstruction lies not with the VC dimension, which is known to grow slowly; instead, the result follows the fact that the loading problem is NP-complete. (The complexity scales badly with input dimension; the loading problem is polynomial-time if the input dimension is constant). Similar and well-known theorems had already been proved by Megiddo and by Blum and Rivest, for binary-threshold networks. It turns out the general problem …

Effect Of Applied Potential Upon The In Situ Structure Of Self-Assembled Monolayers On Gold Electrodes, Mark Anderson, Marilyn Gatin May 1994

Effect Of Applied Potential Upon The In Situ Structure Of Self-Assembled Monolayers On Gold Electrodes, Mark Anderson, Marilyn Gatin

Mark R. Anderson

Polarization modulation Fourier transform infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (PM-FTIRRAS) has been utilized to study the in situ structure of octadecanethiol when adsorbed to gold electrode surfaces and with the application of potential to the substrate. It is found that applied potential has little effect upon the spectrum of the monolayer in the presence of D2O solutions containing 0.10 M NaClO4. The presence of an acetonitrile solution contacting the monolayer leads to small changes in the infrared spectrum relative to that seen in D2O solutions, suggestive of some small disordering of the monolayer caused by the presence of the acetonitrile. With …

Application Of The Quartz Crystal Microbalance To Characterize The Interaction Of Solutes With Modified Interfaces, John Roush, David Thacker, Mark Anderson May 1994

Application Of The Quartz Crystal Microbalance To Characterize The Interaction Of Solutes With Modified Interfaces, John Roush, David Thacker, Mark Anderson

Mark R. Anderson

Piezoelectric quartz crystals, modified by the spontaneous adsorption of either 4-aminothiophenol or octadecanethiol, were utilized to investigate the selective interactions that exist between solutes and the surface modification layer. It is found that the exposed amine functionality of the 4-aminothiophenol monolayer increases the sensitivity of the quartz crystal microbalance to phenols relative to the response found at either a crystal modified with an octadecanethiol monolayer or an unmodified quartz crystal. Protonation of the amino group decreases the sensitivity of the 4-aminothiophenol modified crystal toward the phenol solutes, to a level approximately the same as seen for the octadecanethiol monolayer and …

Renormalization-Group Study Of A Hybrid Driven Diffusive System, K. E. Bassler, Beate Schmittmann May 1994

Renormalization-Group Study Of A Hybrid Driven Diffusive System, K. E. Bassler, Beate Schmittmann

Beate Schmittmann

We consider a d-dimensional stochastic lattice gas of interacting particles, diffusing under the influence of a short-ranged, attractive Ising Hamiltonian and a ‘‘hybrid’’ external field which is a superposition of a uniform and an annealed random drive, acting in orthogonal subspaces of dimensions one and m, respectively. Driven into a nonequilibrium steady state, the half-filled system phase segregates via a continuous transition at a field-dependent critical temperature. Using renormalization-group techniques, we show that its critical behavior falls into a new universality class with upper critical dimension dc=5-m, characterized by two distinct anisotropy exponents, which, like all other indices, are computed …

Why Magnification Works, Terry L. Smith, Jay S. Huebner

Terry L. Smith

The simplest way to magnify the view of a small object is to bring the object closer to the eye, and of course science teachers know about magnifying glasses, telescopes, and microscopes. But why magnification works seems intuitive and is not usually explained to our students. We present here a few ideas on magnification that we use in our classroom and some general information on vision that we hope will be helpful to other teachers.

Click‐Evoked Otoacoustic Emissions In Normal‐Hearing Children, Jacek Smurzynski Jan 1994

Click‐Evoked Otoacoustic Emissions In Normal‐Hearing Children, Jacek Smurzynski

Jacek Smurzynski

Click‐evoked otoacoustic emissions (CEOEs) were collected from 167 ears of 106 normal‐hearing children using the ILO88 system with the stimuli presented at 80±2 dB pe SPL. Subjects were divided into five age groups: 13–24 months (24 ears), 25–36 months (49 ears), 37–48 months (31 ears), 49–60 months (34 ears), and 61–72 months (29 ears). All subjects had normal middle ear function and their audiological data were within normal limits. Mean overall CEOE level was calculated for each age group. None was statistically different from any other. However, the data of the 167 ears showed small but statistically significant decrease in …

Predicting Modes Of Toxic Action From Chemical Structure: An Overview, Steven P. Bradbury Jan 1994

Predicting Modes Of Toxic Action From Chemical Structure: An Overview, Steven P. Bradbury

Steven P. Bradbury

In the field of environmental toxicology, and especially aquatic toxicology, quantitative structure activity relationships (QSARs) have developed as scientifically-credible tools for predicting the toxicity of chemicals when little or no empirical data are available. A basic and fundamental understanding of toxicological principles has been considered crucial to the continued acceptance and application of these techniques as biologically relevant. As a consequence, there has been an evolution of QSAR development and application from that of a chemical-class perspective to one that is more consistent with assumptions regarding modes of toxic action. The assessment of a compound’s likely mode of toxic action …

Influence Of Summer Storms On The Solution Geochemistry In A Coastal Plain Hydrosequence, Jeffrey M. Novak, C. Lee Burras Jan 1994

Influence Of Summer Storms On The Solution Geochemistry In A Coastal Plain Hydrosequence, Jeffrey M. Novak, C. Lee Burras

C. Lee Burras

An understanding of factors which influence wetland soil solution chemistry is important for soil solutions are known to influence some chemical properties of surface waters. The influence of summer storms on the solution geochemistry in a South Carolina riverine wetland soil was evaluated by comparing pore water collected 2,4 hr after five summer storm events with pore water acquired during five nonstorm periods. Pore water was collected by tension lysimeters buried at 15 to 152 cm in two locations along a hydrologic gradient. Samples of rain, throughfall and stream water were also collected. Overall, summer storms had no significant influence …
