While exploring to find better solutions, an agent performing on-line reinforcement learning (RL) can perform worse than is acceptable. In some cases, exploration might have unsafe, or even catastrophic, results, often modeled in terms of reaching 'failure' states of the agent's environment. This paper presents a method that uses domain knowledge to reduce the number of failures during exploration. This method formulates the set of actions from which the RL agent composes a control policy to ensure that exploration is conducted in a policy space that excludes most of the unacceptable policies. The negative binomial (NB) is a member of the exponential family of discrete probability distributions. The nature of the distribution is itself well understood, but its contribution to regression modeling, in particular as a generalized linear model (GLM), has not been appreciated. The mathematical properties of the negative binomial are derived and GLM algorithms are developed for both the canonical and log form. Geometric regression is seen as an instance of the NB. The log forms of both may be effectively used to model types of POisson-overdispersed count data. A GLM-type algorithm is created for a general log-negative binomial regression …

An algorithm, combining digital-image with spring network techniques, has been developed that enables computation of the elastic moduli of random two-dimensional multiphase composites. This algorithm is used to study the case of isotropic, randomly centered, overlapping circular inclusions in an isotropic elastic matrix. The results of the algorithm for the few-inclusion limit, as well as the case where both phases have the same shear moduli, agree well with the exact results for these two problems. The case where the two phases have the same Poisson’s ratio, but different Young’s moduli, is also studied, and it is shown that the effective …

Cross sections for inclusive electron scattering from aluminum have been measured at both forward and backward angles in the kinematic region near x =1 and 1.75 & Q & 7 (GeV/c) . The forward-angle data are in good agreement with a recent calculation. Both the data and the calculation show scaling behavior for F2(g, Q~)=vs(g, Q2) at high Q for fixed values of the Nachtmann variable g. The ratio R =oL /trr has been extracted for 1.75 &Q &5 (GeV/c) and is found to decrease with Q2 to a value consistent with zero at the highest Q~.

The molecular structures and 1r-bond strengths are determined using both MP2 and MCSCF + CI energies for a series of H2X=YH2 compounds, where X = Ge or Sn and Y = C, Si, Ge, or Sn. The annual cycle of surface-based inversions at nine Arctic weather stations is examined, based on a 20-year set of daily 1200 UT significant level radiosonde data. All stations are at or near the coast. Inversions in winter months are primarily the result of strongly negative net radiation at the surface, whereas in summer, inversionsmore commonly result from near-surface cooling of warm air muses. Inversion frequency is at a maximum inwinter (generally >70% of days) when inversions range from -400 to -850 m in thickness. Inversion thickness and strength (temperature change across the inversion) are strongly related to surface temperature. Inversions …

Several levels of electronic structure theory are used to analyze the formation of a peptide bond between two glycine molecules. Both a stepwise and concerted mechanism were considered. The energetic requirements for the stepwise and concerted mechanisms are essentially the same within the expected accuracy of the methods used. A simpler model system comprised of formic acid and ammonia is found to provide a good representation of the essential features of dipeptide formation. Total electron densities and localized molecular orbitals are used to interpret the mechanisms.

A new procedure for the measurement of γ-aminobutyric acid, norepinephrine, dopamine, serotonin and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid from the same brain region was developed. In general, two separate high-performance liquid chromatographic runs were performed, one for the γ-aminobutyric acid determination and one for the determination of the monoamines. The electrochemical detection of γ-aminobutyric acid was determined by a new procedure that utilized a small aliquot of the brain sample prepared for monoamine measurement. This assay was linear and parallel between 6 and 200 ng per 20-μl injection with 5-aminovaleric acid utilized as an internal standard. Inter-assay variability averaged 5% throughout the assay …

The electronic structure of complexes arising from the formation of a double bond between a silylene ligand (Si(R)R') and a high-valent transition-metal fragment have been investigated using ab initio wave functions including the effects of electron correlation. Using the analogy of carbon, these complexes may be referred to as Scbrock-type silylenes or silylidenes. A prime motivation for this work is that complexes of this type, unlike their carbon analogues, have so far eluded attempts at experimental characterization. Unusual effects noticed in previous force microscopy data are explained by a model based on work-function anisotropies and their associated patch charges. Measurable forces between macroscopic bodies can be due to the interaction of patch charges, with important consequences in the fields of surface forces, contact mechanics, adhesion, Schottky barriers, and the surface properties of insulators.

We apply computer simulation techniques to obtain the clastic moduli of a matrix containing circular holes. As the area fraction of holes increases, the Young's modulus of the composite decreases from E0 until it eventually vanishes at the percolation threshold. We study three distinct geometries: (a) periodically centered circular holes on a honeycomb lattice, (b) periodically centered circular holes on a triangular lattice, and (c) randomly centered circular holes. All three cases have the same dilute limit that can be calculated exactly. By examining the narrow necks between adjacent circles, we have calculated the critical behavior for the regular cases …
