The Biases And Mean Squared Errors Of Estimators Of Multinormal Squared Multiple Correlation, Joseph F. Lucke, Susan E. Embretson Jan 1984

The Biases And Mean Squared Errors Of Estimators Of Multinormal Squared Multiple Correlation, Joseph F. Lucke, Susan E. Embretson

Joseph Lucke

The sample squared multiple correlation coefficient, $R^{2}$ is known to have certain unsatisfactory properties as an estimator of the population squared multiple correlation. Hence, numerous adjusted estimators based on functions of $1-R^{2}$ have been proposed. We examine the biases and mean squared errors of five adjusted estimators as well as $R^{2}$. General results are given for estimators linear in $1-R^{2}$, and four such estimators are examined in detail. In addition, a quadratic estimator and the minimum variance unbiased estimator are examined. Comparisons among these estimators are made in terms of absolute bias and mean squared error.

Preliminary Age Classification Of Landslides For Inventory Mapping, James P. Mccalpin Jan 1984

Preliminary Age Classification Of Landslides For Inventory Mapping, James P. Mccalpin

James P. McCalpin

A preliminary age classification for landslides is proposed for inventory mapping, based on morphologic criteria visible on aerial photographs. Because landslide scars and deposits are generally disequilibrium landforms, they progress through observable morphologic stages as they age. Four age classes are distinguished: 1) active; 2) inactive-young; 3) inactive-mature; 4) inactive-old. Each age class reflects the age of latest movement only. The morphologic "freshness" of each part of the landslide must be evaluated, including: the head scarp, lateral scarps, marginal drainage, internal scarps and blocks, internal drainage pattern, vegetation type and density, and toe morphology. Morphologic parameters defined from air photos …

Electric Field And Plasma Density Measurements In The Auroral Electrojet, R. Pfaff, M. C. Kelley, Bela G. Fejer, E. Kudeki, C. W. Carlson, A. Pedersen, B. Hausler Jan 1984

Electric Field And Plasma Density Measurements In The Auroral Electrojet, R. Pfaff, M. C. Kelley, Bela G. Fejer, E. Kudeki, C. W. Carlson, A. Pedersen, B. Hausler

Bela G. Fejer

Intense electrostatic waves in the auroral E region have been detected simultaneously on two payloads launched in a mother-daughter configuration from Kiruna, Sweden. The data sets comprise electric field and density measurements from the ambient (dc) conditions to fluctuations as high as 50 kHz. The dc electric field measured by both payloads was 54 mV/m northwest, which corresponded to an electron drift velocity of 1080 m/s. This electric field drove two-stream waves perpendicular to both B and E observed by both spacecraft throughout an altitude region which agrees quite well with the range predicted by linear two-stream theory. The power …

Ion Cyclotron Waves As Apossible Source Of Resonant Auroral Radar Echoes, Bela G. Fejer, R. W. Reed, D. T. Farley, W. E. Swartz, M. C. Kelley Jan 1984

Ion Cyclotron Waves As Apossible Source Of Resonant Auroral Radar Echoes, Bela G. Fejer, R. W. Reed, D. T. Farley, W. E. Swartz, M. C. Kelley

Bela G. Fejer

Auroral backscatter radar observations were made from Ithaca, New York, at 50 MHz during the early morning of April 1, 1976, a period of high magnetic disturbance (Kp ∼ 8). The backscattered power showed large rapid (time scale of a few minutes or less) variations, characteristic of discrete radar aurora, from L = 3.5–4. Doppler spectra of waves propagating in nearly the north-south direction from up to 28 different ranges were obtained simultaneously with good spatial (7.5 km) and temporal (2 s) resolution. Some unusual spectra with very narrow peaks at Doppler shifts between about 70 and 90 Hz were …

Directional And Dynamic Variations Ofauroral Power Spectra Related To The Ionospheric Electron Drift Velocity, E. Nielsen, C. I. Haldoupis, Bela G. Fejer, H. M. Ierkic Jan 1984

Directional And Dynamic Variations Ofauroral Power Spectra Related To The Ionospheric Electron Drift Velocity, E. Nielsen, C. I. Haldoupis, Bela G. Fejer, H. M. Ierkic

Bela G. Fejer

Power spectral observations of auroral electron density fluctuations with a scale length of nearly 1 m have been made with the STARE system (Scandinavian twin auroral radar experiment). Simultaneous measurements of the mean radial Doppler velocities were used to derive estimates of the ionospheric electron drift velocity. The data were analyzed to determine the spectral dependence on the magnitude and direction of the electron drift velocity. The two spectral types, characterized as “narrow” and “broad,” were observed simultaneously from the same scattering volume. The width of the broad spectrum (up to about 1200 Hz) can be at least 3 times …

Theory Of Plasma Waves In The Auroral E-Region, Bela G. Fejer, J. Providakes, D. T. Farley Jan 1984

Theory Of Plasma Waves In The Auroral E-Region, Bela G. Fejer, J. Providakes, D. T. Farley

Bela G. Fejer

We have extended the linear fluid theory of electrojet plasma waves to the region where ion magnetization effects are important. Our general dispersion relation includes the effect of cross-field and field-aligned drifts, ion inertia, electron density gradients, and recombination. In the absence of density gradients and recombinational damping, the oscillation frequency at marginal instability is changed by the ion magnetization effects from the ion acoustic frequency, ω = kCs, to the modified ion cyclotron frequency ω² = Ωi² + k²Cs². These upper E region waves can be driven by field-aligned and/or cross-field drifts and have the smallest threshold drift velocities …

Possibilities For Finite Grand Unification With N = 2 Supersymmetry, Asim Gangopadhyaya Dec 1983

Possibilities For Finite Grand Unification With N = 2 Supersymmetry, Asim Gangopadhyaya

Asim Gangopadhyaya

We study the prospects for constructing finite grand unified theories using softly broken N = 2 global supersymmetry. The requirement that the supersymmetry breaking scale be of order 103−104 GeV and that the mixing between the observed light fermions and the mirror fermions present in N = 2 theories be small («mW), make it difficult to construct finite grand unified theories based on a large class of simple groups with a realistic symmetry breaking pattern.

Topoi And Categories Of Fuzzy Sets, Lawrence Stout Dec 1983

Topoi And Categories Of Fuzzy Sets, Lawrence Stout

Lawrence N. Stout

Let H be a completely distributive lattice and hence a Heyting algebra. Goguen's category of fuzzy sets Set(H) Eytan's logos Fuz(H) and the topos of sheaves on H, Sh(H), are interconnected by pairs of adjoint functors between them. Each of the categories has a predicate calculus. These predicate calculi are related through the functors between the categories. Change of base lattice gives rise to several functors which preserve or reflect specific kinds of statements in the predicate calculi. This paper gives details of the categories, the predicate calculi attached to them, the functors between the categories, and the preservation properties …

Predicting The Proton Mass From Pi-Pi-Scattering Data, Jf Donoghue, E Golowich, Br Holstein Dec 1983

Predicting The Proton Mass From Pi-Pi-Scattering Data, Jf Donoghue, E Golowich, Br Holstein

Barry R Holstein

We relate experimental information on ππ scattering to tree-level effective chiral Lagrangians. The result is of a form similar to that used in Skyrme-type models of the proton, where the nucleons are described as topologically stable solitons of the chiral fields. In such models, one can express the proton mass in terms of measured scattering data, with the result Mp=880±300 MeV. We interpret this as a consistency test for the Skyrme models.

Maximal Functions Measuring Smoothness, Ronald A. Devore, Robert C. Sharpley

Robert Sharpley

Maximal functions which measure the smoothness of a function are introduced and studied from the point of view of their relationship to classical smoothness and their use in proving embedding theorems, extension theorems and various results on differentiation. New spaces of functions which generalize Sobolev spaces are introduced.

Decomposition Rates, Synthesis, And Spectral Properties Of A Series Of Alkyl Hyponitrites, Craig A. Ogle, Steve W. Martin, Michael P. Dziobak, Marek W. Urban, G. David Mendenhall Oct 1983

Decomposition Rates, Synthesis, And Spectral Properties Of A Series Of Alkyl Hyponitrites, Craig A. Ogle, Steve W. Martin, Michael P. Dziobak, Marek W. Urban, G. David Mendenhall

Steve W. Martin

A number of trans-alkyl hyponitrites (RON=NOR) were synthesized and characterized. At 66.1 f 0.1 "C in isooctane and with millimolar to micromolar concentrations first-order kinetics were observed with half-lives (min) of 12.8 f 0.2 (CHJ, 32.3 f 1.1 (2-C3H7), 15.0 1 0.3 (cyclohexyl), 25.2 i 1.2 (tert-butyl), 18.3 f 0.3 (tert-pentyl), 3.0 f 0.1 (benzyl), 11.2 f 0.5 (2-phenylethyl), and 5.5 f 0.3 (1-phenylethyl). The rate constants were concentration independent and showed little change with changes in solvent polarity or viscosity. Ultraviolet, magnetic resonance, infrared, and mass spectra for the new hyponitrites are reported. Most of the hyponitrites were highly …

Convexity Of The Free Energy In Some Real-Space Renormalization-Group Approximations, Miron Kaufman, Robert B. Griffiths Oct 1983

Convexity Of The Free Energy In Some Real-Space Renormalization-Group Approximations, Miron Kaufman, Robert B. Griffiths

Miron Kaufman

Whereas the free energy for a spin system in a hierarchical lattice will be convex as a function of appropriate parameters (and thus the heat capacity positive, etc.), the same need not be true of a corresponding approximate real-space renormalization-group method applied to a Bravais lattice. Some examples are given which illustrate this point.

Ab Initio Studies Of Abstraction Reactions Xhn + Hydrogen (H2) → Xhn+1 + Hydrogen (H) (X = Carbon, Nitrogen, Silicon, Or Phosphorus), Mark S. Gordon, David R. Gano, Jerry A. Boatz

Mark S. Gordon

The abstraction reactions CH3 + H2 --+ CH4 + H, SiH3 + H2 --+ SiH4 + H, NH2 + H2 --+ NH3 + H, and PH2 + H2--+ PH3 + H have been studied with a variety of methods, including MCSCF, POL-CI, UMP2, and UMP3. In agreement with the observed thermochemistry, abstraction by methyl radical is found to proceed more easily than by silyl, and the reverse of the last reaction occurs with a very small ( ~ 5.6 kcal/mol) barrier. POL-CI appears to be a consistently reliable approach for this type of reaction.

Competing Criticality Of Short- And Infinite-Range Interactions On The Cayley Tree, Mehran Kardar, Miron Kaufman Sep 1983

Competing Criticality Of Short- And Infinite-Range Interactions On The Cayley Tree, Mehran Kardar, Miron Kaufman

Miron Kaufman

The Ising model, with equivalent-neighbor and nearest-neighbor interactions of Cayley tree connectivity, is solved exactly. Breaking translational symmetry by turning on the Cayley interactions is analogous to lowering spatial dimensionality in Bravais lattices. A range of classical criticality, a point of logarithmic corrections, a range of continuously varying power-law singularities, and a point of exponential singularity are successively encountered.

Renormalization And Radiative-Corrections At Finite Temperature, Jf Donoghue, Br Holstein Jul 1983

Renormalization And Radiative-Corrections At Finite Temperature, Jf Donoghue, Br Holstein

Barry R Holstein

We discuss the renormalization prescription for fermions at finite temperature and describe the procedure for calculating radiative corrections. Novel features arise, such as a lack of explicit Lorentz invariance, 1k2 singularities, and the absorption of soft photons from the background heat bath. The methods are illustrated by explicit calculation of the electron renormalization and the radiative corrections to H-->e+e- (with H being spin zero) in finite-temperature QED.

Are The Silacyclopentadienyl Anion And The Silacyclopropenyl Cation Aromatic?, Mark S. Gordon, Philip Boudjouk, Freidun Anwari

Mark S. Gordon

Stabilization energies attributable to aromaticity in the silacyclopentadienyl anion and the silacyclopropenyl cation were found to be small in the former and absent in the latter when calculated from bond-separation reactions employing 3-21G and ST0-2G basis sets. The silacyclopentadienyl anion is approximately 25% as aromatic as the all-carbon analogue whereas silabenzene is more than 80% as aromatic as benzene. The introduction of diffuse functions into the basis sets has only a small effect on these results. The silacyclopropenyl cation is actually destabilized but strain is probably a key factor in the comparison. Also found was that the ST0-2G basis set …

Equatorial Disturbance Dynamo Electric Fields, Bela G. Fejer, M. F. Larsen, D. T. Farley Jul 1983

Equatorial Disturbance Dynamo Electric Fields, Bela G. Fejer, M. F. Larsen, D. T. Farley

Bela G. Fejer

F-region vertical drift data from Jicamarca, Peru show that equatorial east-west electric fields are sometimes perturbed 16-24 hours after the onset of geomagnetic storms. These disturbance dynamo electric fields, which must be caused primarily by the action of neutral winds at low and middle latitudes, decrease and sometimes even reverse the quiet time electric field pattern during both daytime and nighttime. The long delay excludes the possibility that gravity waves are responsible and suggests that the thermospheric circulation is disturbed. The data also show that after some storms there are no such delayed disturbances, a fact which may be due …

Studies Of Self-Focusing Instability At Arecibo, D. T. Farley, C. Lahoz, Bela G. Fejer

Bela G. Fejer

Precisely simultaneous radar and satellite measurements at the altitude of reflection of a strong HF heating wave above the Arecibo Observatory were made on June 7, 1977. Parametric instabilities produce strong enhancements in the plasma line and ion line incoherent scatter radar echoes. These echoes also exhibit periodic deep fading that is attributed to a self-focusing instability. This explanation was confirmed by the in situ observation of electron density fluctuations with peak-to-peak amplitudes reaching at least 3% and a spatial dependence that corresponded closely to the radar fading pattern, at least for irregularity wavelengths ranging from a few hundred meters …
