NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center’s Systematic Image-Based Optical Alignment (SIBOA) Testbed was developed to test phase retrieval algorithms and hardware techniques. Individuals working with the facility developed the idea of implementing phase retrieval by breaking the determination of the tip/tilt of each mirror apart from the piston motion (or translation) of each mirror. Presented in this report is an algorithm that determines the optimal phase correction associated only with the piston motion of the mirrors.

The last decade has seen a rapid increase in the number of precision tests of relativity. This research has been motivated by the intriguing possibility that tiny deviations from relativity might arise in the underlying theory that is widely believed to successfully mesh General Relativity (GR) with quantum physics. Many of these tests have been analyzed within an effective field theory framework which generically describes possible deviations from exact relativity and contains some traditional test frameworks as limiting cases. What Do We Know About Lorentz Symmetry?, Q. G. Bailey

Precision tests of Lorentz symmetry have become increasingly of interest to the broader gravitational and high-energy physics communities. In this talk, recent work on violations of local Lorentz invariance in gravity is discussed, including recent analysis constraining Lorentz violation in a variety of gravitational tests. The arena of short-range tests of gravity is highlighted, demonstrating that such tests are sensitive to a broad class of unexplored signals that depend on sidereal time and the geometry of the experiment.

Lorentz symmetry is one of the pillars of both General Relativity and the Standard Model of particle physics. Motivated by ideas about quantum gravity, unification theories and violations of CPT symmetry, a significant effort has been put the last decades into testing Lorentz symmetry. This review focuses on Lorentz symmetry tests performed in the gravitational sector. We briefly review the basics of the pure gravitational sector of the Standard-Model Extension (SME) framework, a formalism developed in order to systematically parametrize hypothetical violations of the Lorentz invariance. Preliminary work has been done in order to assess the perspectives of metrology and fundamental physics atomic experiments at SYRTE and LKB in the search for physics beyond the Standard Model and General Relativity. The first studies we identified are currently ongoing with the Microscope mission and with a Cs fountain clock. The latter brings significant improvement on the proton-sector coefficient cTT down to the 10−17 GeV level.

For the purpose of searching for Lorentz-invariance violation in the minimal Standard-Model Extension, we perfom a reanalysis of data obtained from the 133Cs fountain clock operating at SYRTE. The previous study led to new limits on eight components of the ˜cµν tensor, which quantifies the anisotropy of the proton’s kinetic energy. We recently derived an advanced model for the frequency shift of hyperfine Zeeman transition due to Lorentz violation and became able to constrain the ninth component, the isotropic coefficient c˜TT, which is the least well-constrained coefficient of ˜cµν. In this talk, the stationary limit of Lorentz-violating electrodynamics is discussed. As illustrated by some simple examples, the general solution includes unconventional mixing of electrostatic and magnetostatic effects. I discuss a high-sensitivity null-type measurement, exploiting Lorentz-violating electromagnetostatic effects, that could improve existing limits on parity-odd coefficients for Lorentz violation in the photon sector.

Lorentz symmetry violations can be parametrized by an effective field theory framework that contains both General Relativity and the Standard Model of particle physics, called the Standard-Model Extension or SME. We consider in this work only the pure gravitational sector of the minimal SME. A theoretical and experimental study of thermosensitive resins used in thermal stereolithography is presented. The process of local curing through the application of infrared radiation, which has proved to be useful in a new technique for the making of prototypes by means of selective heating with C02 laser (10.6um), is studied. The ideal composition of the thermosensitive resins has proved to be 10 parts epoxy, 1.4 part diethylene triamine (the curing agent) and 0.7 part silica powder. A physical theoretical model is applied for control of the parameters which influence the confinement of the curing in the irradiated bulk. A …

Global analysis of gene expression changes in soybean (Glycine max) and Heterodera glycines (soybean cyst nematode [SCN]) during the course of infection in a compatible interaction was performed using the Affymetrix GeneChip soybean genome array. Among 35,611 soybean transcripts monitored, we identified 429 genes that showed statistically significant differential expression between uninfected and nematode-infected root tissues. These included genes encoding enzymes involved in primary metabolism; biosynthesis of phenolic compounds, lignin, and flavonoids; genes related to stress and defense responses; cell wall modification; cellular signaling; and transcriptional regulation. Background: Cyst nematodes are devastating plant parasites that become sedentary within plant roots and induce the transformation of normal plant cells into elaborate feeding cells with the help of secreted effectors, the parasitism proteins. These proteins are the translation products of parasitism genes and are secreted molecular tools that allow cyst nematodes to infect plants.
Results: We present here the expression patterns of all previously described parasitism genes of the soybean cyst nematode, Heterodera glycines, in all major life stages except the adult male. The Mu transposon system of maize is highly active, with each of the ∼50–100 copies transposing on average once each generation. The approximately one dozen distinct Mutransposons contain highly similar ∼215 bp terminal inverted repeats (TIRs) and generate 9-bp target site duplications (TSDs) upon insertion. Using a novel genome walking strategy that uses these conserved TIRs as primer binding sites, Mu insertion sites were amplified from Mu stocks and sequenced via 454 technology. 94% of ∼965,000 reads carried Mu TIRs, demonstrating the specificity of this strategy. Microarray technology has become widespread as a means to investigate gene function and metabolic pathways in an organism. A common experiment involves probing, at each of several time points, the gene expression of experimental units subjected to different treatments. Due to the high cost of microarrays, such experiments may be performed without replication and therefore provide a gene expression measurement of only one experimental unit for each combination of treatment and time point. Though an experiment with replication would provide more powerful conclusions, it is still possible to identify differentially expressed genes and to estimate the number of false positives …
