Disintegration Of Te121 And Te123 Isomers, Robert Katz, R. D. Hill, M. Goldhaber
Robert Katz Publications
Line intensities in the conversion electron spectra of Te121 and Te123 were evaluated in a variable field, 180° focusing beta-ray spectrograph. Electron-electron coincidences were obtained between the transition pairs 82-213 kev in Te121 and 88.5-159 kev in Te123. Decay schemes for the two isomers are shown.

Likening colleges and universities to the automobile industry may seem far-fetched, but is it? Each is engaged in fashioning and selling necessary products- one trained men, the other mechanical equipment. Both entered the post-war years with production at low ebb; unable to satisfy pent-up customer demands. Time and high-speed assembly lines have bridged the gap of gas buggy shortage. The impact of selective buying by a discriminating public is now real cause for concern among some of the motor moguls. Rumor has had it that schools teaching wildlife management are overproducing. We decided to gather facts and opinions at the …
Microorganisms And Soil Structure, T. M. Mccalla
Microorganisms And Soil Structure, T. M. Mccalla
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
SUMMARY
Laboratory tests were made to determine the effectiveness of different compounds and microbial groups in increasing the stability of Peorian loess lumps against the action of falling water drops. The influence of these on percolation tests in the laboratory was also determined.
Many organic substances-dextrose, sucrose, starch, peptone, cullulose, and gum arabic-did not themselves contribute directly to soil-structure stability, though these substances do furnish energy material for soil microorganisms, which can convert them readily into either microbial tissue or decomposition products that increase soil-structure stability. Lignin, proteins, oils, fats, waxes, resin, and paraffin increased the stability of lumps of …

Preliminary tests with DDT for the control of mosquitoes, forest insects, and agricultural pests demonstrated that it was toxic to a wide variety of animal life. Because there were indications that the new insecticide would be widely used, apprehension was expressed by some groups that its extensive or indiscriminate use would cause extensive harm to wildlife.
The desirability of carefully controlled use was early recognized by those in charge of extensive programs for the control of insects of public health importance. A joint statement of policy for the use of DDT issued early in 1945 (1) by the Army and …
Constant Rank Matrices, Harlan D. Mills
Constant Rank Matrices, Harlan D. Mills
The Harlan D. Mills Collection
A matrix is a rectangular array of quantities which, as an array, obeys certain rules when combined with other matrices by the operations of addition and multiplication, or when combined with scalar quantities by the operation of multiplication. These operations have meaning if and only if the matric quantities and scalar quantities are elements of a ring. A minor of a matrix is a certain function of a square sub-array of the matrix, and has a unique meaning if and only if the elements of the sub-array are commutative. The rank of a matrix is a function of all possible …

Relative Productive Value Of Land, Karl Harris, Vaughn E. Hansen
Relative Productive Value Of Land, Karl Harris, Vaughn E. Hansen
Reports
Location, markets, hard surface roads and other transportation facilities, churches, taxes, schools, and utilities are major factors in the monetary value of land, yet these things do not contribute to the land’s productivity. In this bulletin the only factor considered in determining the agricultural value of land is its productive capacity.
The three major factors in the productive value of land are water, climate, and soil.
These three factors are the principal ones in crop production. If any one of them is unfavorable to plant growth, it can inhibit or even prevent plant growth regardless of how favorable the other …

The Species Concept: A Semantic Review, Benjamin H. Burma
The Species Concept: A Semantic Review, Benjamin H. Burma
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
In some respects, it is extremely unfortunate that names are ever attached either to ideas or objects. The false attachment of names to ideas or objects similar but not identical with the original can work harm far exceeding the benefits conferred by having a convenient label. The name "species" has come to such a state. As we shall see, a species, be it plant or animal, is a fiction, a mental construct without objective existence. Animal, and plant, lines of descent exist in a four-dimensional continuum. To set up species in this continuous line of descent, we must chop it …

The Frost-Moved Rubbles Of Jumbo Dome And Their Significance In The Pleistocene Chronology Of Alaska, Clyde Wahrhaftig
The Frost-Moved Rubbles Of Jumbo Dome And Their Significance In The Pleistocene Chronology Of Alaska, Clyde Wahrhaftig
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Jumbo Dome, a prominent landmark on the north side of the Alaska Range, is a small body of intrusive andesite surrounded by schist and by poorly consolidated sediments of Tertiary age. Frost-moved rubbles, consisting of coarse andesite blocks, almost completely mantlethe dome and have advanced outward from it across a gently sloping terrain for distances as much as 1 ¼ miles. Several different periods of rubble development are recognized, based on the amount of vegetal covering of the deposits, the preservation of their surface forms, and their degree of erosion by fluvial processes. The rubbles are not now moving and …

On Matrices With Elements In A Principal Ideal Ring, William Leavitt, George Whaples
Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications
We prove the following theorem.
THEOREM 1. Let D be any commutative principal ideal ring without divisors of zero, and A any matrix with elements in D whose characteristic equation factors into linear factors in D. Then there exists a unimodular matrix T, with elements in D, such that T-1 AT has zeros below the main diagonal.
Management Of Native Deer In Nebraska, John H. Wampole, Edson Fichter
Management Of Native Deer In Nebraska, John H. Wampole, Edson Fichter
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Publications
Deer are on the increase in Nebraska. Reports of deer seen, of deer killed on highways, and of localized cases of damage to crops by deer have become increasingly frequent during the last ten years. Since Nebraska is not primarily a land of forests nor of great repute as a deer state, the presence of these mammals in more than rare occurrences arouses considerable interest-and creates new problems in wildlife management.
It is the purpose of these notes to answer some of the questions most commonly asked about deer in Nebraska, and to point out certain misunderstandings which have led …
Studies In Quantitative Paleontology Ii. Multivariate Analysis—A New Analytical Tool For Paleontology And Geology, Benjamin H. Burma
Studies In Quantitative Paleontology Ii. Multivariate Analysis—A New Analytical Tool For Paleontology And Geology, Benjamin H. Burma
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
Multivariate analysis is the simultaneous comparison of three or more variables in order to determine the significance of their likenesses and differences. The technique has been in use for some thirteen years, but no simple account of the method has hitherto been available. An illustrative example from invertebrate paleontology is here used, but the method is applicable to any problem in geology involving several quantitatively known variables.
Use Of Motion Pictures In Laboratory Dynamical Studies, Carl Bailey, Jaan Jurisson, M. Eugene Rudd
Use Of Motion Pictures In Laboratory Dynamical Studies, Carl Bailey, Jaan Jurisson, M. Eugene Rudd
M. Eugene Rudd Publications
In student laboratory experiments in dynamics, as, for example, Newton's second law of motion or the conservation of momentum, it is, of course, highly desirable to allow motion with the least possible constraint and to observe the displacements of moving parts without using perturbing markers. This circumstance has led us to use motion pictures in the student laboratory for quantitative observation of rapid dynamic processes, a technique which is used in a well-known textbook.' The photographic method combines maximum freedom of movement with accurate observation of position as a function of time, if the camera frame speed is sufficiently high. …
