Hierarchical Search Method For Gravitational Waves From Stellar-Mass Binary Black Holes In Noisy Space-Based Detector Data, Yao Fu, Yan Wang, Soumya D. Mohanty

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications and Presentations

Future space-based laser interferometric detectors, such as LISA, will be able to detect gravitational waves (GWs) generated during the inspiral phase of stellar-mass binary black holes (SmBBHs). These detections contain a wealth of important information concerning astrophysical formation channels and fundamental physics constraints. However, the detection and characterization of GWs from SmBBHs poses a formidable data analysis challenge, arising from the large number of wave cycles that make the search extremely sensitive to mismatches in signal and template parameters in a likelihood-based approach. This makes the search for the maximum of the likelihood function over the signal parameter space an …

Kinetic Characterization And Identification Of Key Active Site Residues Of The L-Aspartate N-Hydroxylase, Cree, Sydney B. Johnson, Hannah Valentino, Pablo Sobrado

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

CreE is a flavin-dependent monooxygenase (FMO) that catalyzes three sequential nitrogen oxidation reactions of L-aspartate to produce nitrosuccinate, contributing to the biosynthesis of the antimicrobial and antiproliferative nautral product, cremeomycin. This compound contains a highly reactive diazo functional group for which the reaction of CreE is essential to its formation. Nitro and diazo functional groups can serve as potent electrophiles, important in some challenging nucleophilic addition reactions. Formation of these reactive groups positions CreE as a promising candidate for biomedical and synthetic applications. Here, we present the catalytic mechanism of CreE and the identification of active site residues critical to …

Comparing Thin And Volume Regimes Of Analog Holograms For Wavefront Sensing, Emma Branigan, Andreas Zepp, Suzanne Martin, Matthew Sheehan, Szymon Gladysz, Kevin Murphy

Articles

Two analog holographic wavefront sensors, for measurement of defocus, have been fabricated as both thin and volume phase transmission holograms in a self-developing photopolymer. This represents the first reported direct comparison of hologram regimes when designed for wavefront sensing. An analysis of the effect of crosstalk in the presence of one other aberration mode (astigmatism X (0/90°), coma X (horizontal), and primary spherical aberration) was carried out with each version of the sensor. The performance of thin and volume analog holographic wavefront sensors was characterized under emulated conditions associated with moderate atmospheric turbulence.

Characterizing Range-Dependent Variations Of The Evaporation Duct: A Meteorological Perspective, Daniel P. Greenway, Alexis E. Vaughan, Andrew J. Kammerer, Erin E. Hackett

Marine Science

Evaporation ducts (EDs) are an observed electromagnetic phenomenon caused by rapid decreases of humidity with altitude. Sensing technologies that operate at X-band frequencies (8–12 GHz) exhibit the extension of radar signals beyond the radar horizon and holes in coverage at high altitudes during evaporative ducting conditions. In addition, the evolution of the ED over range has been reported to cause further adverse effects on these technologies in some circumstances. However, in terms of the predictability of these effects, more research is still needed. This research explores ED variations over range and characterizes them based-on two numerical datasets from different latitudes, …

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

As legal battles over surface water allocation in Klamath County, Oregon, USA have gained national attention, earning the name “Water Wars,” authorities have been increasingly turning to groundwater to compensate for water shortfalls. This case study aims to identify the nuanced perspectives of household groundwater well users who are affected by groundwater extraction. Using Q methodology, we uncover groundwater well users’ perceptions and to what extent they think water problems are dealt with fairly. We identify four water perspectives that differ in the degree to which respondents prioritize clean water accessibility, industry accountability, individual responsibility for water management, and trust …

Objectives. The increasing demand for computing skills has led to a rapid rise in the development of new computer science (CS) curricula, many with the goal of equitably broadening participation of underrepresented students in CS. While such initiatives are vital, factors outside of the school environment also play a role in influencing students' interests. In this paper, we examined the effects of students' perceived parental support on their interest in computer programming and explored the mechanisms through which this effect may have been established as students participated in an introductory CS instructional unit.

Participants. This instructional unit was …

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

A response of global seismic activity to the geomagnetic storms of St. Patrick’s Day (March 17) in 2013 and 2015 is investigated. These two storms occurred during nearly identical storm sudden commencement times and similar solar flux levels. We have revealed a rather similar pattern of the most substantial earthquakes that have occurred since these storms. Two major crust continental earthquakes, in Iran (M = 7.7), 16 April 2013, and in Nepal (M = 7.8), 25 April 2015, have occurred with a time delay of ~30 and ~39 days after geomagnetic storm onsets in 2013 and 2015, respectively. After that, …

Articles

This research is based on a trans-European research project aimed at enhancing software design and engineering practices to promote inclusivity, involving stakeholders from academia, industry, and disability advocacy services. To explore the nature and meaning of inclusion, a number of different approaches to inclusion are outlined, including models of equitable design (Accessible Design, Inclusive Design, Universal Design, and Design for All), User Design processes (Co-Production, Co-Creation, User-Centred Design, Co-Design, and Participatory Design), and Software Engineering Methodologies (Linear, Spiral, and Agile). These three categories of models are combined to form a three-dimensional environment in which software development projects can be mapped …

Artificial Carbon Sequestration In Utah, Signee Storrud, Kendall Becker, Scott Hotaling Jul 2024

Artificial Carbon Sequestration In Utah, Signee Storrud, Kendall Becker, Scott Hotaling

All Current Publications

Carbon dioxide is an important greenhouse gas that helps keep Earth warm and habitable. But since humans began burning large quantities of fossil fuels during the Industrial Revolution, there has been a rapid increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide from approximately 280 parts per million in 1750 to more than 420 parts per million in 2024. Natural carbon storage processes have been unable to keep up with humans’ carbon dioxide emissions, and the sudden rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide has led to rapid global warming and climate change. One climate adaptation tool that may help rebalance Earth’s carbon cycle is artificial …

P-Adic Quantum Mechanics, The Dirac Equation, And The Violation Of Einstein Causality, Wilson A. Zuniga-Galindo

School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article studies the breaking of the Lorentz symmetry at the Planck length in quantum mechanics. We use three-dimensional ℘-adic vectors as position variables, while the time remains a real number. In this setting, the Planck length is 1/℘, where ℘ is a prime number, and the Lorentz symmetry is naturally broken. In the framework of the Dirac-von Neumann formalism for quantum mechanics, we introduce a new ℘-adic Dirac equation that predicts the existence of particles and antiparticles and charge conjugation like the standard one. The discreteness of the ℘-adic space imposes substantial restrictions on the solutions of the new …

Deep Space Observations Of Conditionally Averaged Global Reflectance Patterns, Alexander Kostinski, Alexander Marshak, Tamás Várnai

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 2

The Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) spacecraft drifts about the Lagrangian point ≈ 1.4 − 1.6 × 106 km from Earth, where its Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) observes the entire sunlit face of Earth every 1–2 h. In an attempt to detect “signals,” i.e., longer-term changes and semi-permanent features such as the ever-present ocean glitter, while suppressing geographic “noise,” in this study, we introduce temporally and conditionally averaged reflectance images, performed on a fixed grid of pixels and uniquely suited to the DSCOVR/EPIC observational circumstances. The resulting images (maps), averaged in time over months and conditioned on surface/cover type …

Doing Personal Laps: Llm-Augmented Dialogue Construction For Personalized Multi-Session Conversational Search, Hideaki Joko, Shubham Chatterjee, Andrew Ramsay, Arjen P. De Vries, Jeff Dalton, Faegheh Hasibi

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The future of conversational agents will provide users with personalized information responses. However, a significant challenge in developing models is the lack of large-scale dialogue datasets that span multiple sessions and reflect real-world user preferences. Previous approaches rely on experts in a wizard-of-oz setup that is difficult to scale, particularly for personalized tasks. Our method, LAPS, addresses this by using large language models (LLMs) to guide a single human worker in generating personalized dialogues. This method has proven to speed up the creation process and improve quality. LAPS can collect large-scale, human-written, multi-session, and multi-domain conversations, including extracting user preferences. …

Seed Mix Performance With Environmental Stressors And Invasion: Implications For Wetland Restoration, Maddie Houde, Karin Kettenring

Browse all Datasets

Seed-based revegetation is increasingly pursued in wetland restoration, but seed and seedling mortality is high and can be further limited by environmental stressors, like hydrology and salinity. The interactive effects of hydrology and salinity on native plants, especially in the presence of invasive plants, are less clear. In greenhouse and mesocosm experiments, we tested different hydrologic and salinity conditions on the growth of native seed mixes and Phragmites australis, a widespread wetland invader in North America. The greenhouse experiment tested two mixes (forb mix, graminoid mix), while mixes in the mesocosm experiment combined forbs and graminoids chosen for broad …

A Comparative Analysis Of Shap, Lime, Anchors, And Dice For Interpreting A Dense Neural Network In Credit Card Fraud Detection, Bujar Raufi, Ciaran Finnegan, Luca Longo

Conference papers

Financial institutions heavily rely on advanced Machine Learning algorithms to screen transactions. However, they face increasing pressure from regulators and the public to ensure AI accountability and transparency, particularly in credit card fraud detection. While ML technology has effectively detected fraudulent activity, the opacity of Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) can make it challenging to explain decisions. This has prompted a recent push for more explainable fraud prevention tools. Although vendors claim to improve detection rates, integrating explanation data is still early. Data scientists recognize the potential of Explainable AI (XAI) techniques in fraud prevention, but comparative research on their effectiveness …

The Growth Of Ethanol In Brazil: Sugarcane, Corn, And A Few Other Things, Fabio Mattos Jul 2024

The Growth Of Ethanol In Brazil: Sugarcane, Corn, And A Few Other Things, Fabio Mattos

Cornhusker Economics

Although we can expect more ethanol produced from corn in the coming years, it is unclear whether it will keep expanding at the same pace as in recent years or how much it will contribute to total ethanol production.

One point to keep an eye on is the typical dynamics of markets. If supply and demand conditions and price movements make corn-ethanol more profitable, ethanol plants in Brazil will keep increasing their production. If it makes more economic sense to produce corn-ethanol (as it happened recently), they will use more corn to produce ethanol.

Supply and demand conditions for ethanol, …

Structural Factors Of An Electron As The Spinning Tetrahedral Structure Composed Of Fractional Charges, Polievkt Perov Jul 2024

Structural Factors Of An Electron As The Spinning Tetrahedral Structure Composed Of Fractional Charges, Polievkt Perov

College of Arts & Sciences Faculty Works

Abstract

As suggested in our papers [1,2], the elementary particles of the 1st generation such as an electron, quarks, and neutral particles, are all spinning composite structures made of basic elementary particles of fractional charges +- e/3. The tetrahedral structure of an electron was suggested as one of the possible composite structures of that particle. The structure consists of one positive and four negative charges of magnitude e/3, with one positive and one negative charge located on the axis of rotation and three negative charges revolving about the axis. In this paper, the form factors such as the angles …

Designing Self-Management For And With Persons Living With Dementia Osullivan, Dympna, Dympna O'Sullivan, Michael Wilson, Damon Berry, Orla Moran, Siobhan O,Neill, Ciaran Nugent, Jonathan Turner, Julie Doyle

Articles

Promoting high quality of life for persons living with dementia has emerged as a central goal in global public health agendas. The emphasis has shifted from extending life to actively enhancing overall well-being by postponing or preventing additional disability. This represents a departure from traditional medical perspectives on dementia to a more socially-oriented approach, placing a strong focus on wellbeing.

In parallel, the concept of self-management for people with living dementia has emerged, where this is a person-centred approach in which the individual is empowered and has ownership over the management of their life and condition. Practice recommendations for person-centered …

We consider S-operations f : An → A in which each argument is assigned a signum s ∈ S representing a “property” such as being order- preserving or order-reversing with respect to a fixed partial order on A. The set S of such properties is assumed to have a monoid structure reflecting the behaviour of these properties under the composition of S-operations (e.g., order-reversing composed with order-reversing is order- preserving). The collection of all S-operations with prescribed properties for their signed arguments is not a clone (since it is not closed under arbitrary identification of arguments), …

Superoscillations occur when a globally band-limited function locally oscillates faster than its highest Fourier component. We generalize this effect to arbitrary quantum-mechanical operators as a weak value, where the preselected state is a superposition of eigenstates of the operator with eigenvalues bounded to a range, and the postselection state is a local position. Superbehavior of this operator occurs whenever the operator's weak value exceeds its eigenvalue bound. We give illustrative examples of this effect for total angular momentum and energy. In the latter case, we demonstrate a sequence of harmonic oscillator potentials where a finite-energy state converges everywhere on the …
